On road trips we like to eat at small restaurants that feature interesting food not franchise food. Thai is one of our favorites. Spying 1st of Thai in our search along I-35 we stopped in for dinner. Located in a small strip of stores, the interior is non pretentious, plenty of tables of different sizes. The window drapery has an Asian feel giving a minimal sense of exotic. Asian music softly plays over the speakers giving one a sense of culture. We ordered the Param Longsam #34a, and the Tom Kha #17. The dishes come with rice and were generous proportions. I will say the dishes were pretty good and recommend stopping by for something different. read more

I would highly recommend eating at 1st of Thai! When my family was down in Fairbault, we stopped here to eat and the food, service was amazing! Was greeted with smiling faces right when we walked in! We had Elizabeth as our server and she was genuinely nice, and took her time to make sure we had the best experience ever. She ALWAYS checked back in on us to see if we needed anything, to refill waters if needed. She always had a bright smile on her face, and treated all customers with respect. She engaged to have conversations with you, asked how your day was going! The food was, nice and hot when it came out and exactly what we asked for! The food tasted AMAZING. We have 4 kids and most of them are picky but leaving this restaurant they ate things that they loved and said they we would eat again! Elmade sure my kids were happy and got the food they wanted. Just passing through and ate here. Ordered the 49.Pad Mi Luang Lomien noodle and two egg rolls. I really like spice and asked for extra spicy Lomein. Holy Chit!! It was spicy!! Overall, disappointing. A friend said they like the place so we gave it a try. Ordered takeout on a Friday night, so when my husband had to wait a while for our food, that was understandable. He wasn't acknowledged for a long time after he walked in the door though. Maybe they were short staffed, we try to be understanding! Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for the slow (but still friendly) service. Pad Thai: Noodles were very overcooked. Flavor was fine, but nothing special. Egg drop soup: $10 for a small container. Figured it'd be a lot more soup for the price. The broth was again, fine, but was just plain chicken broth. No Thai flavor to it. The eggs were chunky, not ribbons, and tasted like they weren't fresh. We ended up throwing most of it away. Red curry with chicken: They didn't include the white rice (we made our own). Good flavor, though! It was just over $40. Although my usual Thai spot is closer to the cities (and much farther from our new house), we could've spent $27 for the same order but much better food. I stopped here very hungry after driving for 3 hours, so the odds of me enjoying whatever 1st of Thai put in front of me were certainly in their favor. But though the service was really attentive and warm, the food was disappointing and now I'm hungry again. I ordered the spring rolls that were "made fresh" and the "best in town", but they came out of the kitchen almost immediately upon ordering and might just be the ONLY spring rolls in town. The vermicelli was overcooked/mushy, there were no fresh herbs, and the spring rolls were overall lightly filled and void of much flavor. I also ordered Tom Yum soup with chicken, which came with sticky rice. Though I usually am the jerk to reach for the salt, this soup was incredibly too salty. The chicken had a gamey taste, and I barely ate half of the soup. The positives: the service was great and the dining area looked bright and clean. Kudos for the check in offer for a free soft drink, but my Sierra Mist might have been the best part of the meal. read more

We chose curry puffs, spicy chicken wings, spring rolls and Red Curry w Chicken. Each item was wonderfull in its own way... the spicy sweet sauce for the perfectly cooked wings disappeared in minutes! Spring rolls, a classic we're clearly fresh, the wrappers were still very pliable and the peanut sauce was not the thicker gravy manny places serve and had zip and brightness to the flavor.. the curry puffs were generously filled and the pastry was light and flakey. The red curry was spicy, but not so much that you lost the flavor which was fabulous. The chicken was super tender and vegetables were crisp... short version, we really enjoyed the food and visit. I feel I need to say something as we typically don't.. spring rolls had old old pork in em and peanut sauce wasn't good - and said on menu best in town, they are not good.. so shrugged off appetizers and thought entree would be better WRONG meat tasted old or reheated and flavor was sour In both our dishes. I used to love this place, great pho and great appetizers. But recently came by for a quick pho relief and it wasn't good at all. It tasted like a pre made packet of pho with additional pho soup additives over old pho broth. I did come by later that day on a weekend. But it was very disappointing. Especially if they are making me pay $4 extra than a regular pho shop would. It seems like this was catered for more of the other meals and pho was put on the side. This place was terrible. I ordered the spring rolls and chicken pad thai. It came out WAY to fast. Like, instantly. I think the server took my order, went into the kitchen, was handed a dish and came back out to my table all without stopping. That's how fast it was. There's no way it was "made fresh" just for me. The pad thai presentation was horrendous. Sauce all over the side of the bowl. I could tell how they poured the food into the dish. Super sloppy looking. Let's be real, plate presentation matters. It doesn't need to be super fancy, but just tossed into a bowl without a care, looking like another table's leftovers, makes me think you don't care about what you do in the kitchen. (And that makes me worried about cleanliness.) Now, looks aside, this pad thai was still absolutely revolting. It smelled horrible. I can't even explain the smell. Very BAD to put it politely. The noodles were different than typical pad thai noodles. They were very, very thin. I get pad thai because I love noodles, but these sad, thin strings were not given the love pad thai needs, so they were nasty. I did try to eat some, but I was seriously concerned for my health so my bites were of noodles only and small. It tasted like something that was kicked around a dirty floor and then pull off the bottom of someone's shoe. This pad thai was the most atrocious thing I've ever been given at a restaurant. When I told the server that I couldn't eat it and didn't want to pay for it she was rude, tried to tell me the sloppy sauce on the side of the dish was supposed to be there, and never once apologized. Lunch combos!! I'm a fan of this joint, seriously. I realize that it is a Thai place in Faribault, MN. And the name is sorta funny. And it is in a strip mall. But the food is legit and delicious. They have these great lunch combos that come with one of the best egg rolls I have ever enjoyed. There are only like five lunch combo options and they're primarily Chinese fare, but still pretty darn tasty. Additionally, we have tried many of their dinner entrees to go. All have good although I can't say that their seafood (shrimp or squid) dishes are that fantastic. Would I still give this place 4 stars if it were located on Lake Street? Nope. Back visiting my parents for a while and my brother was the first one to point out this restaurant. My mother commented that she did not like their egg rolls but my brother was insistent that the food was great. A couple days later when driving home from Burnsville my mother offered to stop and let me run in an order some take-out. I jumped at the chance as I had been craving green curry and knew there was no where else in the local area that would offer it. During my visit it was the evening and I did not really go anywhere other than the register area so I can't really comment on the decor. What I did notice was that my green curry chicken was ready in less than 10 minutes! Got home ate the curry and was happily surprised. The curry was spicier than expected (because on the menu its called sweet green curry) but it was good. Even my mother enjoyed it. Overall: Good parking, fast take-out service, reasonable prices, wide variety on the menu. Still afraid to try the spring rolls. read more

The best asian cuisine in town! I'm so thankful for good local Thai food! I'm getting hungry right now just writing this!

Let me start by saying I live 250 miles away from this place, and it is one of my favorite restaurants. I'm in the area about three times a year visiting my mom and other relatives, and I literally eat here almost daily during my visit. When I'm driving toward Faribault, I call in my first take-out order when I get to about Owatonna. I pick it up and show up at my mom's house with Thai food in hand. The green curry is definitely one of my all-time favorites, as well as the Thai basil chicken. But I have never had anything from this restaurant that I didn't love. I've also eaten there with a variety of friends and relatives, and with very few exceptions they all love it. If you've been considering checking it out, I highly recommend it. Update: as I said, I do not live here but I am visiting for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am so excited that this place is still open, and that they are working so hard to keep people --including their employees--safe. I am asking for extra extreme no contact take out, so they are bringing it out and setting it on the hood of my car for me, wearing masks and gloves. I will be honest, I usually do take out at 1st of Thai, but I have dined in a few times as well. I think the price is very reasonable. The atmosphere is definitely of that of a strip mall restaurant, but the service makes up for it. I have always had friendly and quick service whether placing an order for takeout or dining in. The spring rolls and cream cheese wontons are delicious and I order them every time. I pretty much order the same thing every time, I love 27 with shrimp, its stir fried broccoli and pea pods in an onion and garlic sauce, served with white rice. Sometimes I'll switch it up to chicken or beef. Also don't be worried if you have leftovers, they heat up great! On the downside, they no longer serve beer or wine which is very unfortunate. The spice level is never consistent, over the years I have ordered spice level 1-2 (And I can handle some heat). Sometimes there is no spice and other times I can't finish my meal because my mouth is on fire and I'm running for a glass of milk.
