i came here with a larger group (5) on a saturday night and waited 15 min for a table. its a small…read morerestaurant but quite cute! we ordered a bunch of apps to share, although i don't eat pork/beef so can't speak for those apps. the edamame was well salted and the karaage was seasoned nicely and quite tender (although my friend said it was "inauthentic" it was still very enjoyable). for my main, i got the chicken katsu curry bowl. this was one of the most comforting meals i've had in a long time. the chicken was super thin and crunchy and the curry was thin and didn't taste like the premade curry roux you get at the grocery store. the service was very fast; our apps were out in 10 minutes or so. i really enjoyed this place and would certainly go back if i was in the area.

We kicked things off with edamame - simple and exactly what you'd expect (hard to mess that up). From there, we shared the chicken soup dumplings, which were loaded with broth and seasoned chicken. I always wonder how they manage to make those, but that's a mystery for another day. The vegetable spring rolls came out hot and crispy. They could've used more filling, but the thin wrapper made them extra crunchy, which I liked. Surprisingly, the star of the show wasn't the dumplings - it was the fried rice. Something about it just kept me going back for more. I'm usually not big on rice, but even my daughter said it was, in her words, "obnoxiously good." We also tried bubble tea (my daughter ordered it for me), and it was my first time having one with a fruity flavor inside the boba - "slamming" is the only way to describe it. Service-wise, the staff and hostess were polite and attentive throughout. Overall, I'd give The Ugly Dumpling a strong 4 out of 5. FYI - when you hit the bathroom, make sure you grab the hand soap and not the mouthwash like I did. When you go, you'll see what I mean, lol.
