This is probably one of the biggest pho restaurant I've been to in Richmond. The decoration was kind of plain, but very spacious. It is a great place to throw a birthday dinner party since it can accommodate many people. I was seated at the booth and the server handed my menu and it looked quite similar from the Pho So One at Rigsby. I ordered eggrolls, broken rice, and my sister got pho. I have had their pho here in the past, so I still remember what their flavors tasted like. The server ordering our food didn't smile and just looked like he didn't want to be there at work. Maybe he was having a bad day or too tired. We would never know with lack of communication except ordering our food of course. It kind of set in a weird vibe. The cool thing was you can order 1 springroll and 1 eggroll, instead a set of 2 eggrolls in a plate. Anyways, the eggroll was hot and crunchy, which was great! The pho noodle soup was pretty standard. A little bit bland and they never give a lot of beef brisket here I have noticed. I ordered #33 which is the broken rice that comes a small bowl of soup and dipping sauce (or you can pour on top of the food); which tasted yummy. No complaint there! The pho is really good and I'd go back solely for the pho, but the service in terms of hospitality is poor. We walk in, they don't greet us, just tell us to choose a table to sit at. They're fast with their service, no complaints about that, but not friendly at all. They bring us our waters, & ask what we want. Our spring rolls come out within the next two minutes, I was very surprised. It showed that the spring rolls were premade though, they were okay, but I've had better. The pho was really tasty, the broth was delicious. The thinly sliced brisket we got was still cooking in the broth when it was served. I had the large and I think that that amount is Definetly good for leftovers. It was huge. My husband is crazy about pho so he always wants to try every pho place he finds. Well, I am happy to proclaim this place to be the pho-shizzle. The restaurant itself is huge, brightly lit and spacious, almost cavernous. It was also clean as a whistle. There was a nice crowd on the night we visited, with the service was brisk, attentive, and well-paced. We started off with the shrimp rice paper rolls, which were well prepared and quite good. For dinner, DH got the pho (of course) which came with slices of rare beef brisket in the hot broth. He proclaimed it to be absolutely delicious. For my dinner, I ordered the grilled pork chop with broken rice. It was incredible. The chop was delicately seasoned and beautifully grilled. It came with a light sauce on the side that you can use as much or as little you like with your broken rice. Best of all, DH and I left completely full for under $20! My favorite dish is the grilled pork and shrimp on rice vermicelli (bun thom thit nuong) with crispy spring rolls (cha gio), which is what I ordered today. After returning to this location a couple more times, I have I say that the broth is my favorite here, and the brisket is spot on. (Although the brisket is equally good at the Pho So 1 on Rigsby). My fiancée said that the grilled pork is a bit better at the West Broad location. The lady that runs the register told me she wakes up at 4:00am every morning to begin making the broth. She told me it takes 6 hours to get the full flavor, anything less than that and it doesn't taste right. I love pho so 1. The one on broad street and the one on in the back street of horsepen. Every time I come here I always get the pho. I decided to try some broken rice for the first time and I don't regret it. The food here is always great and it never seems greasy. My husband and j always start our meals with an order of eggrolls. He always gets the number 4 pho bowl (large) and I ventured out and got the broken rice (deluxe?). Both were amazing and delish! I normally get the #3 pho, but this broken rice was delish! Cooked great and addicted to the sauce! Beautifully displayed as well. UGH I am so sad/mad that this place is SO disgustingly dirty because I absolutely love the food. It's fantastic. Nothing compares. I want to eat here so bad but I can't get the image of the dirty floors and tables, the dead cockroach on the window sill, the massive amount of dust coming out of the vents on the ceiling and the ripped up seats. They need to take an entire day to scrub the whole place down before I come back to eat here. As for the food -- the rice vermicelli with pork lacked any cucumber, lettuce, basil, bean sprouts, etc., that one often finds elsewhere in rice noodle bowls. Although the grilled pork had good flavor, it was tough. Also, it didn't have much of a grilled favor and had quite a bit of fat and some gristle. The grilled pork over broken rice also had the same tough grilled pork. The iced Vietnamese coffee with sweetened condensed milk is pre-made from coffee brewed in the morning so it is not recommended. Go to Pho Tay Do for the best Vietnamese coffee. read more

First time in my boyfriend and I decided to drop in for a quick lunch and upon arriving literally had nobody to greet us and waited at least couple minutes before we got noticed and finally seated. As soon as I got the menu I realized it is identical to the menu from Pho Que Huong and my boyfriend said couple ppl that use to work there now works at this location. So I ordered beef stew and my boyfriend got the vermicelli bowl. It wasn't bad but it's wasn't great either. I like. First time in the store was yesterday, mid-afternoon. To go, I ordered 2 orders of Crispy Spring rolls and Pho. The wait was brief and pleasant; the tab was $15.03. Back at home I first delved into the Spring Rolls. I've never seen such long Spring Rolls. At first they struck me as rather bland, but after the first one, they began to grow on me. To the extent that I was disappointed that I only had four of them. I should have paid more attention to the variant of pho that I was ordering. Some 15-17 varieties are offered, most with different types of beef (brisket, flank steak, meatballs, tripe, soft tendon, etc.) My main criterion was to avoid tripe. The 2 meats inside the clamshell were tendon, I believe, and a few very rare very thin slices of other beef. The tendon was largely inedible, but I thoroughly enjoyed the pho, and can't wait to do it again. read more

For some reason, the Broad Street's location doesn't taste the same as the one on Rigsby Road - Rigsby is a lot better. However, I think Broad Street gives you a little more food to compensate for that. The amount of noodles and meat you get at Broad Street is enough for two meals. I usually can't finish my meal and will have to take the rest home. I've had many different dishes there and it's really a hit or miss. For example, the broken rice dishes is sometimes way over cooked and sometimes way under cooked. Despite the Broad Street location being bigger, they do a horrible job accommodating large groups of people. The waiter seems very impatient and confused when taking your order. And he is almost always just as frustrated when you ask him to check on your food because everyone else at your table already has theirs and half way done with their meal. We don't get drink refills and it's almost always hard to flag someone down to order something else after the initial order. TLDR; if you're going for quality, go to the one on Rigsby. If you more for quantity, definitely go to the one on Broad. They're not good at catering to larger groups. read more

Excellent vegetarian pho, and a very generous portion. Fresh basil, cilantro, bean sprouts and lime on the side. Hand sanitizer on every table, clean bathroom. I was promptly met with a friendly greeting when I entered, and the waiter smiled and was cordial. No, he did not hover over me during the meal, for which I am thankful. But he did keep an eye out and when I needed him all it took was a finger raised in the air. The parking area outside is a little trashy, but that's not enough to reduce my star rating. I can't speak to the authenticity of the food, but several of the customers were speaking Vietnamese and that is surely an indicator. read more

I am amused/puzzled by some of the comments on the hosts and someone who said they had to wait an hour. There has not been a time when I was not quickly shown a table, seconds upon walking in. If you are looking to be treated like visiting royalty and for life-long friendships with the employees, probably not the place for you. Sure, the upholstery in the booths is filled with crags and ripples, the amount of empty space is jarring, and the staff's handling of the cutlery bumps the decibel level a bit. But we're here for a healing bowl of soup, dangit. And So 1 delivered that for a time, with the large #1 pho (commonly designated Dac Biet at other places). But names have weight, and wrapping a restaurant under the banner of "Number One" is a badge and burden. That badge recalls the better days here, but I suspect there may be a change in staff in the kitchen: you can see it immediately in the broth's color, taste the heavy-handed rock sugar, and the starchier texture of the noodles. Hidden behind Mexico Restaurant, this little diamond in the rough is worth seeking! No, it's not the fanciest of places, but go for the food pho sure! The pork fried rice was yummy and the portion was filling! My table also ordered the shrimp fried rice, the pho bowl and soup... we were all pleased with our choices. We loved the basil, spouts and cilantro they served with our meals. The prices are good and the service is fast. The crowd was diverse, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I have got to say I HATE that I just found out about this place a week or so ago because I would have been coming here all along. The staff, friendly, and very attentive, they constantly checked on myself and my party to make sure we had water, napkins, etc. The food was off the charts amazing! When my order came it looked GREAT, the only problem with that, was as I looked at what everyone else ordered, theirs looked just as good as mine! It turns out that there are few things better on a frigid, slushy day than a massive bowl of steaming pho. I'd never been before, but trust my friends' taste in restaurants pretty implicitly and was not disappointed this time. As mentioned in other reviews the place is very large and meticulously clean, and thanks to the weather it was pretty empty when we showed up so seating was immediate. There were actually a lot of options other than the soup but I confess I didn't look at them very hard, though I will perhaps order something else the next time just to see how the rest of the menu holds up in comparison. We started with the fried egg rolls [crispy and delightful] and the tofu spring roll [rice paper, noodles and tofu] which was accompanied by a fabulous peanut sauce. The pho itself comes in generous portions with the option of adding extra noodles or meat or what have you for a small fee if you somehow aren't full with the standard serving. The broth itself was splendid on its own, though I did elect to add basil and bean sprouts and lime from the ubiquitous plate of offered additions [I left the cilantro for my friends] as well as some sriracha and hot pepper compote-y stuff [tasty, but sweet, I will likely add less next time] from the lazy susan in the middle of the table. To pay you just take the bill to the register, which I am all about for groups. Sometimes i think it's just easier for the servers, though occasionally I've found people don't tip very well at registers, so I hope it's working out for them. I have eaten a LOT of Pho around Richmond and I keep coming back to Pho So 1. Why? Because the food and Pho is fresh.... So, since Pho is now becoming one of the more popular Asian Dishes here in Richmond... why does it not surprise me to see a NEW Pho opening up here on W. Broad St. Pho So 1 is an extension of Pho So 1 off of Horsepen Rd in Richmond. After several weeks of anticipation of the NEW Restaurant, they finally opened this past Monday.... So, since today was a Cold, Wet day here in Richmond.... I thought I would head down the street and check it out. I ordered the Pho Tai Gau which is slices of Eye Round Steak and Brisket in a Beef Broth. The meat was tender and the broth rich in flavor. The Pho dish came out piping hot as well... This place is huge inside, and I am guessing they are anticipating a lot of Pho Customers. In addition they have a Granite Bar which I hope will be a place to eat some Pho. So, I suggest if you have the chance... check them out. The food is excellent and I know you will enjoy it as much as I. I will be returning, and also to let you in on a little secret... First off, holy huge space! I felt like I had entered a cafeteria when I walked into this newer Pho So 1 location. It's ginormous and pretty bare - lots of tables, but I can't imagine needing to use all of them at once unless there was a private party. My first stop after being greeted was the bathroom, since I'd been running errands all afternoon with a friend. This was a bad move, as it set the tone for my entire visit and wasn't exactly positive. I don't expect anything fancy or even glisteningly clean, but this bathroom was awful. No need to get into the nitty gritty because hopefully it's in better condition now, but it just wasn't a pleasant experience and I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The dining area itself, however, is extremely clean. Thankfully, this helped me push the bathroom memory to the back of my thoughts and concentrate on the food, which was delicious. I went with the bbq tofu over rice vermicelli and it was really, really good. The tofu was cooked perfectly, so the texture was soft with a slight crispness on the outside. The sauce that lightly covered the tofu strips was incredibly flavorful while not being overpowering. It was really the perfect balance of sauce to tofu. I considered taking home some of my meal, as there was no way I could finish the portion in one sitting, but the tofu was so good that I just at it off the top and left the majority of the vermicelli. I'll definitely get this again in the future. I'd also like to try their avocado smoothie next time, as this is one of my favorite treats ever - I'd like to see how their version fares against other spots. My dining companion ordered one as we were leaving, and loved it. The food was quite tasty, but the experience overall was a tad lackluster so I'm gonna go with a middle of the road, average rating until I visit again and re-evaluate. read more

This place is HUGE compared to the original location! The waiters are really busy and do a whole lot of walking. I believe the food was really good! I usually order a number 29, and it was just as good as a number 29 at the other location. I mention that because some people have mentioned that there is a difference in food quality between the two locations. Service however was not as great. I know Pho So 1 is really busy on Sunday afternoons, especially since people are going out to eat right after church. Once we got seated, we didn't even get to place our order for about 10 minutes, mind you we didn't even have any water served to us yet. We ordered some appetizers along with our meal, but we didn't even get those until after we finished our meal. They even forgot that we even order some appetizers. We had to remind them about it! It took a while for them to serve us our meals. They're not as quick as compared to the original location. I'm glad that the waiters and staff here are pleasant. This was my first time here, but I know that they can make a lot of improvements overtime. I would recommend that they hire more waiters. Like I said earlier in this review, this place is huge and there is a lot of ground to cover here as a waiter. There are basically two big sections of seating space in this restaurant. There should be a certain number of waiters designated to each section and those waiters should only serve within that section. It will be more efficient and won't wear out the waiters so easily. I feel bad for them because they sometimes have to go from one end of the restaurant to the other, and sometimes they forget to serve some customers. I noticed some customers waiting for long periods of time, and I think this problem can be solved if they hired more waiters. I hate to give this Pho So 1 a really low rating, and it feels really weird to since I'm so used to the amazing service that the other location has.
