My travel-weary soul is restored. Spent a week in San Francisco for work and the time change kicked my butt. Had a hard time sleeping when I was there and an even harder time now that I'm home. I woke up craving pho at an obscenely early hour and thought I had to wait for lunchtime to satisfy my craving, but remembered reviews for Pho Tay Do that mentioned opening early. A check of Yelp...score! They open at 9. My hubby, daughter and I headed to Pho Tay Do at 10 (she's a teenager, so I had to wait until she woke up), which is mere minutes away. This is a cash-only place, so be sure to bring some money with you. We ordered hot jasmine tea and Vietnamese iced coffee for drinks. Appetizers were soft shrimp and pork spring rolls and fried spring rolls. The fried spring rolls were epic; the soft spring rolls, not so much. I love fresh spring rolls but these were really bland...basically tasted like water. For entrees we got pho--two pho tai and one pho ga. Wow! The pho was spectacular! Deep, rich broth and a huge portion of noodles. We ordered the regular portion, but they also offer a smaller and larger size. I couldn't finish the regular, even though I really, really wanted to. This restaurant is now on my short list for places to go for soul-satisfying grub. read more

Friendly service, might be a bit difficult to communicate but for sure you point what you want on the menu and it will be served. Seems a mom & pop operation, hint hint.... it's authentic!!! I don't even know how in the world we found this place, but I love hole-in-the-wall type establishments so I was excited. It looks like the houses its squished in between, but inside is an actual restaurant. One person is the greeter, the waiter, and the cashier and he is AMAZING! He has such an infectious energy and joy! The food was so delicious and they had a nice selection on the menu. Since this was right behind Pho So 1, I was confused when my GPS told me to turn in. Pho Tay Do is located in this little house on the side of the street. It is a really interesting layout, with only a few tables in the sitting area. The walls are covered in paintings, most notably of life-size "people" in various landscapes. We had a huge group so we had to wait a while for everyone to show up. Still, the waitress was super friendly and accommodating. Service was generally excellent throughout the entire meal. I ordered a pho and split a broken rice dish with my friend. The food was very tasty, and relatively cheap at this location too! I was particularly impressed by the many size options for pho: junior, regular, large, and extra large! I've been looking for a place that sells mini-pho so that I can order two dishes when I eat Vietnamese. xD The next time I come, I'll order the junior pho and try a bun dish. This little place is hidden behind another unnamed pho restaurant, which is how we happened to stumble across it (it was the unnamed pho restaurant's off day, and our mouths were watering for pho). The venue is a bit small, staff is pretty friendly, they only accept cash, and the decor gives you that "wow, I thought we were in Richmond, not Vietnam?" feeling :P The spring rolls we ordered were a bit on the small side, and the sauce was very odd. The sauce that came with the spring rolls were a bit gelatinous, which is not characteristic of peanut/hoisin sauce that usually accompanies spring rolls at all! I felt like they watered down their sauce and added cornstarch to it to achieve the gelatinous texture. Although I was a bit disturbed by the consistency of the sauce, the spring rolls weren't bad, and I of course devoured what was on my plate. The pho itself is decent. I didn't like the noodles because they were over-cooked and a bit saturated when the bowl was brought out. I also thought that the broth was too clear and a bit lacking in the flavor department. This is no doubt my favourite pho place in town! The restaurant is in a small little house with several parkings in front of it. Probably not your "typical" restaurant surroundings but I aways feel comfortable and welcomed. I can't speak to beef based pho since my go-to is the shrimp pho (plz save your breath on arguing that there's no such thing as shrimp pho), I can tell you every single friend of mine who has tried beef pho here LOVED it! I always get the shrimp pho because of my diet restriction, but I don't feel like missing out at all!! They give you a generous amount of fresh shrimp, deveined. As always, it comes with a plate of bean sprouts, Thai basil, sliced jalapeño, and lime wedges. The veggies are clean and abundant. The soup is steaming hot, clear yet with depths of flavors. We came here because our usual place was closed and I was craving pho. From the outside it looks like a little house, so it can be easy to miss at a first glance. I would say this is the best service I have received at a pho restaurant!! They have options for medium, large, and x large pho bowls. I got a medium, which was actually pretty "small" but enough for me! My fiancé got a large and he said it wasn't enough for him, so I suggest getting an x large if you're ready to binge. The gentlemen waiting all the tables was very knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive--one of the best waiting experiences I've had in years. The fried pork rolls as well as the shrimp rice paper rolls were delicious and my husband and I each had our own large brisket pho bowl. I brought my parents here for brunch this morning as opposed to our usual place across the way. We aptly arrived around 10:20 AM and were seated next to one gentleman who seemed to be in and out for his usual morning bowl of noodles and hot tea. Between the three of us, I ordered a bun bo hue for my mother, large pho bo kho for my father with bread on the side (which appeared no larger than a regular size), and bun rieu for myself. My parents kept repeating how PTD was much better in flavor compared to the next door competitor however I was not very satisfied with my bun rieu. It might be a shame to compare certain Vietnamese places to places two hours up north but I've had much better bun rieu elsewhere. The bun bo hue was less spicy (read: tolerable) than I was used to and the noodles were served in soft fragments, reminiscent of soup leftover from the night before. Nonetheless, my mother enjoyed its flavor and the pieces of slow cooked meat that lined the bowl. My father refused to share any of his bo kho and sopped up every last bit of anise-flavored broth with the warm toasted bread served on the side, tearing and dipping chunks, and stuffing them into his mouth using his chopsticks. I think I was more satiated watching my parents slurp down their noodles as I left my bun rieu unfinished. The crab and egg omelette was the first to go, and the tomatoes and flavorless broth were the last things left. Overall, Pho Tay Do definitely won my parents' hearts and stomachs. PTD gained two fans and one critic this morning. Would recommend and will return. read more

Smallest hardest to find, restaurant in area. There are 4 VN restaurants all within a stones throw. Converted single-family home with 12 tables which could probably seat 50 people. The smell of beef broth walking in was wonderful. Very interesting old painted decorations give this little diner the special ambience. The wife and I were shopping in the area - something we loathe - and were dreading the long drive back home due to massive hunger pangs. A quick Google search later and we found Pho Tay Do. We've had pho in other restaurants and this is among the very best we've ever had. The actual restaurant area is less than spectacular -- it's actually quite confusing. We didn't know if we were supposed to seat ourselves? There were long tables and small tables and big, unconnected groups of people sitting together it seemed. I grabbed one of the servers and asked if we could just sit and he seemed open to it, so we did. After that confusing experience, everything else was clockwork. We ordered quickly. Our food arrived very quickly. The service was lovely, and the atmosphere quickly coalesced into something that resembled a family restaurant. Most importantly however: the Pho is just phenomenal. I wish there were more vegetarian pho options but the beef options are exquisite, varied, and so hearty. The small portion was more than enough for me! I can't believe I haven't gone to this place sooner. If you know me my favorite places to eat are hole in the walls. And this place is that. Small little Vietnamese restaurant tucked out of the way, but well worth the effort to experience. I ordered food to go. I walked in and was pleasantly greeted by the staff. He gave me a menu and gave me some recommendations. I did know that I wanted to try their Bun Bo Hue (a spicy beef noodle soup). Couldn't wait to get home and try it. Let me tell you it did not disappoint. The broth was very flavorful and complex. Good amount of heat, but not overpowering. The rice noodle was firm, but chewy. Not too thin either. I also ordered their grilled bbq pork on rice, grilled beef on rice, combination fried rice, and chicken noodle soup. Everything was delicious. I was confused at first seeing that it looked like we pulled up to someone's home, but don't be fooled!! This restaurant had such good food and in the inside made me feel like I was eating at a little shop in Hanoi hahaha Ambiance: the place is really small and decorated as if it was actually like a little shop in Vietnam in the 90s, but I found it homey and nostalgic. Not loud either inside, even though there were a good amount of customers inside. Service: there was only one waiter working with about 4 tables to tend to and he was fantastic! Such a friendly and outgoing guy it felt like he was my friend taking my order LOL Food: I ordered bun rieu while other people in my group ordered pho dac biet, banh kanh, and hu tieu. Every noodle soup had it's own unique and authentic flavor :) we also order summer and egg rolls as appetizers which were good as well/ although I wish they gave more lettuce to wrap the egg rolls with. My favorite part was when I ordered the iced coffee- such a strong coffee flavor and really woke me up! Price: this really blew me away because everything was so cheap!!! This would have been a 4-star review. Unfortunately due to the way their staff's nonchalant attitude towards covid-19 handling in the restaurant and the arrogance towards patron's request to wear masks properly, I have to give them a one-star or rather no star review. They are basically committing manslaughter to high-risk customers and slowing down the recovery of the economy. You wouldn't knowingly serve food with E Coli to your patron, why would you get defensive when your patron requests that you wear your masks properly. Just because you are asymptomatic and can ride it out, it doesn't mean all your patrons can. I would like to think you would want as many people to live and stay healthy to continue to support your business for many years to come not just one meal during the covid-19 era! On 11/29 I ordered pick up. Before I opened the storm door attached to the restaurant I noticed one of the cashiers had the mask on his lips but nostrils were out in the open and the other one had the mask on the chin. I signaled to them to pull the masks up, when I walked towards him he said "what you can't see the glass?". He was referring to a plastic shield in front of him that has an opening at the bottom and all three 3 sides are opened to the poor circulated airflow which can carry droplets around the restaurant, so the plastic glass has minimal help unless you also wear a mask as well. The entire restaurant is a little less than 700 square ft with no or little natural airflow. They allow patrons to sit inside to eat. Takeout people are being forced to pay cash inside since they do not have merchant service set up. (Ironically they leave your pick up food by the door but you still have to walk inside to pay) I live in the neighborhood and have introduced many people to their establishment. However, due to this unfortunate event, I will not be going back. Their attitude is not worth anyone's health risk or to test out your immunity. read more

I enjoyed coming there service was amazing and the beef stew was good just too much fat compared to meat pieces. It will probably be better eating it in person compared to taking it to go. I know what connective tissue looks like..... the pieces of meat were actually less by me requesting less fat and a bit more meat this time.... getting an extra noodle in person was worth it.... versus doing it take out. Regardless, I won't be coming back because it wasn't worth it honestly. The first picture I posted shows more "tendon" and some fat so I can give them that on that picture versus the ones from today. It's a total of 4 pieces of MEAT where I gave 3 to my daughter....... which is the small bowl pictured I kept one piece for myself...... the noodles giant vast amount no complaints there the actual point of the dish BEEF NOODLE SOUP was a fail... 4 pieces is a joke... I even went and said something and the best that was said to me is it's not fat........ DOES THAT MAKE IT MEAT ALL OF A SUDDEN? Lovely humble people, quickly got us seated and our food came quick. We were a party of six and they refilled our drinks as soon as they were empty. I ordered a pork chop over broken rice which was heavenly. It came with pork skins? And pork cake. Pork cake was tasty but I DK what the skins was. Flimsy slivers of pork. Maybe I was suppose to mix them. Comes with a broth ( a lil sweet) and a sauce. My friends ordered a tasty beef fried rice.
