Broth was on the savory side of broths which I like however it wasn't near some of the other pho spots in Richmond. .The meat tasted fresh and they provided a good amount of toppings. Staff were friendly. The outside does make this place look like a hole in the wall spot, but the food is still quite decent. Unfortunately they have a 4% credit card fee which was significantly high. Stopped in as we were closing out the day for some traditional Pho. It's and older building and it was evident when I visited the restroom. Clearly not a large investment in the habitability of yhe mens room. Old subway tile for the walls and other areas that clearly needed some tlc. This is a good no-frills hole in the wall pho spot. The inside decorated likely in its original outfitting from inception. The staff speak limited English, but quickly attend to your needs. My water was brought out with something in or on the ice, and they quickly replaced my water cup. I ordered the shrimp roll and pho (P7 I believe) with flank steak and brisket. The rolls were huge and thick, and part of me would have liked them slightly smaller or not as thick. The pho comes in different sizes, which is arbitrarily unknown really what the bowl sizes look like. I opted for a medium and it was huge. The flavors were great and this was a delicious bowl of pho. Great food and friendly service!!! It's my first time in Richmond and I was surprised to find this here. Virginia Beach has Pho 76 and Norfolk has Pho 78, so it was funny to find this too! Be prepared though, when we went they had the instrumental version of My Way by Frank Sinatra and Beauty and Beast on repeat for a good hour! I've only got to recently try this place out but I must say it's probably one of my favorite pho restaurants in Richmond! The staff is always so attentive and friendly. They're also relatively fast with getting food orders out and I've never had to wait a crazy amount of time! I've ordered the #2 and #10 and both times were delicious! I got the small and thought that it was filling enough for me (especially with the bean sprouts and everything else added in) and the pricing was quite fair. I would say it is very authentic pho! There are so many Pho spots in Richmond, all pretty good. I think this spot is my new favorite because of its unique style and it appears to be operated with a couple or duo of male and female. This seems to be a good sign of most Richmond Pho spots. I ordered their super bowl #14 Pho combo. It is amazing and SUPER LARGE. I am fat and am overly ambitious with proportions, I did not finish this and that is saying something. Along with noodles, they have rice dishes, as well as cooked noodle dishes. I believe they sell Banh Mi as well which are the Asian like subs. The food came out at a good pace..of course when busy it did take longer but a good sign that it's on the fresher end, right ? Pho, you say? Pho, it is. A decent number of tables inside with spacing so that you're not sitting immediately next to someone else. The menu was pretty clear and we were able to find ourselves at the Pho Ga section easily. Small, medium and large bowls on offer, we chose two small bowls. A few minutes later, two decently sized vats of broth, stuffed with chicken and noodles and green onions, plus a large side dish with bean sprouts, lime wedges and basil. After adding some shredded basil and a squirt of Sriracha, it was heavenly. I cleared the bowl. I've eaten here many times in the past. I haven't been in a few years and it seems the food has gone downhill and the prices way up. The Pho had a bit of a sour taste like something was going bad and it seems to be coming from the noodles. The clear rice paper rolls were pretty good. The fried spring rolls again were a bit off and had an odor to them. In the end the bill seemed really high for what we got and they added a service charge. Summary: "Pho", formerly "Pho 79", is a Vietnamese restaurant focusing their menu on Pho (rice noodles in a beef broth with onions and various Vietnamese toppings). Cost: I got a large bowl of pho and it was $7.95 I believe and fairly filling. Taste: I'm a little torn on what to say here because the pho was tasty, but perhaps not *quite* as good as Pho So 1. There was certainly an abundance of noodles, so if you like noodles in your pho, you'll be pleased. There wasn't a ton of meat but it was adequate and tasted good. The brisket wasn't quite as flavorful as others I've tasted, but admittedly that's really being picky. The broth I initially didn't find quite as flavorful as I'm used to, but before I knew it I was finishing the bowl as the taste grew on me. It's not an aggressive flavor but has a nice underlying onion and beef taste. Perhaps the slight lack of flavor is due to less sodium or the like, in which case I should be thanking them. The menu wasn't quite as extensive as other Vietnamese places, but let's be honest here, you're going to go to a place called "Pho" to eat Pho, right? Atmosphere: I can see where others are coming from by calling it a "hole in the wall". As odd as it sounds, I prefer noodle shops like this over some of the larger spacious ones. I grew quite fond of some of the Ramen-ya (ramen noodle only shops) with only 10 or 20 seats that I frequented in Tokyo. The color choice (bright lime) is a bit odd to outline the building with, but it wasn't displeasing. I personally prefer the Atmosphere of "Pho" more than that of the new "Pho So 1" as it gives that "mom and pop noodle shop" feel. Service: I'm guessing that the reviews mentioning poor service were written when it was still "Pho 79" as the wait staff I had were great. There was an older Vietnamese man who waited on me which for some reason gave it a more authentic feel and he checked back a couple times during my meal. I personally think the service was great as they were attentive and I had my meal in literally 4 or 5 minutes after ordering. I've waited longer at McDonald's. Overall: I really liked it here. The actual pho wasn't quite as good as Pho So 1 in my opinion (but wasn't too far off). As a whole, I don't think I could bring myself to give "Pho" 3 Stars, especially with the atmosphere and service which I thought was fantastic. It's a different kind of dining experience than Pho So 1, so you'll want to decide what's important to you and go from there. I know I'll be coming back. read more

This is my family's go-to place for pho. However, I feel like they are only good for the pho. They balance the noodle, broth, and meat ratio well. I hate when there's too much meat. But the broth is super tasty. Not too salty and no need to add hoisin sauce. Everything else is a little disappointing. The summer rolls were so fat and was not your typical summer roll. Even the sauce tasted a little off. I've heard the egg rolls are super greasy and not good either. Their vietnamese coffee is good tho! It's strong and tasty. Service can be a little slow and harder if you don't speak Vietnamese. But this place is never crowded so there's never a wait (compared to Pho So 1), and food comes out really fast. read more

Delicious food with some stunning presention. Being a vegetarian my only option was the Bun Chay w/tofu and spring rolls substituted the meat with tofu (you'll need to ask). I was hoping for more vegetarian options as other Pho ## offer, but the food I ate was still amazing and fulfilling. You'll definitely be served a large portion and it is worth it. I stop in for lunch mostly about once a week and get the chicken and rice or the C3. 99% of the time the chicken is cooked perfectly. Sometimes it can be overcooked but still good. We ordered take out from Pho 79 a few nights ago. We read so many good things about them and thought we would give it a try as we normally go to Mekong on Broad St. Boy, was that a big mistake. We both got rice vermicelli grilled pork and each got 2 crispy spring rolls. Our spring rolls were so full of grease dripping off them that they were almost inedible; had one as an appetizer and one cut up in my meal. Onto the meal- there was plenty of noodles, bean sprouts and grilled pork however the pork was so overdone at least half of the pork was like eating shoe leather and that was with both meals. I am not sure if Pho 79 puts in Thai basil, peanuts or scallions but there wasn't any in either of our meals. Quite disappointing. I'm not sure if ours was lacking as it was sort of close to them closing. I did call them up at 8:48 pm (they close at 9 pm) to see if we were missing ingredients or is that just how they make it but no one answered the phone. I ate part of my meal but threw the rest away the next day because the pork was just too hard to eat. We won't be going back. read more

If you're craving some pho, this is simply the place to go in Richmond. It's a very casual dining experience and great for groups because theres never a wait and the food comes out very quickly. Many richmonders go to Pho So 1 and the other trendier ones but frankly their food is eh and not as authentic as I'd like. But it's great for me because it keeps the lines short at this place! Over the years the quality of the food at this place has really fluctuated. But lately I've found that the food is consistently satisfying! They give large portions for the price you're paying and they offer a ton of herbs on the side with your pho if you're into that stuff. Their broth is super tasty and never loaded with too much salt and MSG. The service could be a little bit better but it's not bad by any means. It may be a little difficult for the customers who don't speak Vietnamese to comprehend the servers because they do have thicker accents. Well this place is obviously struggling, they don't have the air conditioning turned on and they are very stingy with their portions and the flavors are just not that good, I cannot recommend this place at all. The service was okay but they seem like they are struggling and not very happy to be there....
