I've been here more times than I can count. I will always give them five stars because it's my absolute favorite Pho place in Richmond. Closest to Mom's as I can get. Broth is onion-y, fragrant, mouth-watering and rich with Pho spices. I don't add any extra soy sauce, fish sauce or anything. Just the jalapeños and sriracha and/or chili garlic sauce because I like it spicy. It appears to be owned by a local family, and despite the cultural differences, they are actually really friendly. The service can be slow and forgetful if they are fairly busy and especially expect to wait if they are packed with diners. But it will always, always be worth it. read more

A little hospitality would go along way! If it's an inconvenience to take my order must be an inconvenience to do anything for me. In a service and hospitality industry one would think this would be a customarily no matter what kind of cuisine. The Pho was ok but I guess I am so thrown off by how I was treated if I didn't know what I wanted to eat within the first two minutes of sitting down and it was going to be a good 15 minutes before anybody else would come to take my order. Everytime I've eaten here the servers were so rude and give you stank face if you make any special requests. I heard they opened a new location so that might be worth checking out next time. The best pho I've ever had, including some of the homemade pho I've been lucky enough to try. It's perfect on a cold rainy morning, a hungover afternoon, a miserable sick-with-the-flu night, or the hottest day of the summer. There's something so addicting, satisfying, and fulfilling about the broth from this restaurant that no other pho can compare to. I always order the pho that has the most variety and number of meats (I think #4). They never skimp on the meats and the bowl always seems to be a bottomless pit of noodles. Not only is the pho amazing, but their other dishes are just as delicious. A favorite of mine is the vermicelli with grilled pork and fried egg rolls. I love drenching the whole bowl in fish sauce and being uncomfortably full as I attempt to finish it all. All of their food is very affordable, and they are ridiculously quick in bringing the food out. The service isn't always the friendliest, but with the quality of the food and speed at which you get it, I could really care less about a genuine smile and attentive waiting during my dining experience. I came here with a friend of mine. I'm glad she showed me where it was or I never would have found it. It's tucked away from Broad Street in an unassuming house-like building. The pho broth here is of the savory variety and is less "clear" then Da Lat (another Richmond fav of mine). That doesn't mean it's bad. It's actually really good! Also, when they put 'rare' steak in, it's actually rare -- pink and tender. The hot soup does a great job cooking it as you eat. The "small" size is perfect. I usually leave Da Lat feeling like a beached whale so it's nice to have two options when you're not feeling SUPER hungry. Next time I'll try their vermicelli bowl. read more

Best pho in town, without a doubt. Grow up and order the Number 1, with all the wacky cuts of meat, including tripe, and strut around town knowing you had the fortitude to eat intestines and tendons. They are delicious. Make the right move,dummy. Tons of people working and cleaning and turning tables, making sure you get your food fast, so your perfectly sliced roast beef is nice and rare, and not boiled to death - inattentive people ruin both your dining experience and the motoring experience of highway goers the world over. Don't contribute to our international shame. Service is brusque in a charming way that you'll get used to. I hear they run some type of sports gambling operation out of here as well, so if you want to really live dangerously, place some bets with the owner! read more

I had a very good experience my first time. I am asking myself if I like this place better than Me Kong? Maybe, it definitely seems a little more authentic. One reason it is better than Me Kong is because they offer tendon, and tripe in their Pho. The broth was up there with some of the best I've had, but the quantity of meat was a little lagging for the large portion. They get props for equipping each table to the various sauces, and utensils to proper customize your bowl. My sister ordered the bun. Again, this seemed better than Me Kong's. The pork was charbroiled with a nice seasoning of BBQ sauce. The roll seemed standard, but it did taste great. Me Kong's comes with decent quality chicken that looks like the type of stuff you'd cook at home. Overall this place reminds me of Vietnamese restaurants in California. Quantity was lacking, but quality was high. I think Me Kong is more like Chinese food intended for less adventurous white Richmonders. read more

My go-to for Pho for 10 straight years. Pho done right, every time. After a long move -- Pho So 1. After a night of drinking -- Pho So 1. Don't have the energy to cook -- Pho So 1. On those rare occasions that I forget that Pho So 1 is closed on Tuesdays and I drive out to Rigsby Rd to an empty parking lot, I sometimes venture to the other Pho places around. Good Pho. Good spring rolls. Very clean. Fast service. Plenty of parking. Low price. A lot of food for your money. Went to Richmond with my son and tried to eat here for lunch on a Saturday, but the line was out the door and the parking lot was full and we had an appointment to make, so we grabbed something else and then returned here for dinner around 7:00pm. At that time there was no wait with a few tables free. It's clearly a popular place. Good, basic pho menu. Not the best pho ever, but very good in our opinion. Broth was well herbed. All garnishes supplied including plenty of basil and lime wedges which are sometimes missing at other places. The beef was perfectly cooked (I like mine rare). Noodles were perfect. Spring rolls were good. My son was delighted that they have bubble tea. Staff was professional and polite but not friendly or talkative, which doesn't bother me. Not really friendly for large groups unless you don't mind waiting. We requested a table for 3 families but explicitly said we could sit at different tables to make it quicker. Group after group entered and were seated before us, which of course wasn't very pleasing. We had to reiterate a few times that we could sit at different tables. When I entered Pho So 1, my first impression was "Damn, this place is so unashamedly Vietnamese." No glitz, no glam, just authentic Vietnamese food. For better or worse, Pho So 1 does not try to bring in customers with a nice exterior, cleaner walls, nice chairs, tables, etc. It is all about the food here. This place was PACKED when I came here sunday for lunch so I imagine the owners don't have a need to attract new customers. The food is good. It is 100% authentic. If you were to go eat Pho at my mom's house this, is what it would taste like. So it definitely has that going for it. That is essentially what this place is about. The food. But... this place isn't the cleanest that's for sure. If I were with my guy friends then I'd come here but never a date. I took my girlfriend here and she found a hair in her pho. -1 star. If it wasn't for that, I would have given it a 4 but I imagine the cooks in the back probably don't fear the health inspector so one has to take that into consideration when you think about cleanliness. This place is no frills, just plain old good Vietnamese food. The new location is good, too. I've eaten at both and the quality is the same in my opinion. I always get the same thing every time that I come here. I get #15- round eye steak pho. The beef is sliced thin and cooks in the hot broth. It doesn't start as spicy but I add plenty of chili oil and sriracha to spice things up. They also bring you all the fixings- cilantro, jalapeños, thai basil, bean sprouts, and lime to get things exactly to your liking. The small portion is plenty of food for one, but they offer a small and large. I always start my meal with the pork and shrimp rice paper roll. You get two rolls per order. I have little experience with Vietnamese food, but pho so 1 is the best pho I ever tried. I have also tried and enjoyed the pork rice vermicelli from here. I proclaim myself as a huge pho snob!! I grew up eating homemade pho where the broth has been simmering slowly for hours and have made several trips to Vietnam to visit family. If I had one final meal request, I've always said it would be pho. Now that I've got that out of the way. During the summer months I don't tend to eat pho as often with the hot humid VA weather sometimes it's a little difficult to eat a bowl of hot steaming broth but I had been craving pho for days so took a little trip to Pho So 1. It was fairly quiet, the restaurant is nice and big (not Mekong big). Several tables are lined up in the restaurant, decorations are extremely minimal, with a few exceptions of a Buddha statue and other related knick knacks by the register, and there's a big glass case of a drink display. We were seated in the corner and I immediately ordered the crispy egg rolls which rolled extremely thin - it didn't have much meat or filling in it and the nuoc mam wasn't very spicy but had a good amount of fish sauce in it. I ordered the small pho with beef and brisket. The small is a HUGE small. Pho So 1 has a great broth but I wouldn't say it's the best you can find in Richmond. The service isn't all that great - they're quick to take your order and deliver it but if you need something in between or want water refills they can be a little harder to track down. read more

My friend gave this place a rave review so I knew that I had to stop by during my brief visit to Richmond. She was right. This is one of the best Vietnamese restaurants I have ever been to. Normally I get the Pho and an order of spring rolls but I wanted to try something different. My friend got the Tofu BBQ vermicelli so I decided to do the same only BBQ pork instead of tofu. This was legit. Everything seemed really fresh from the vermicelli to the grilled pork. The broth was deliciously refreshing and went perfectly with the soothing bean sprouts, carrots, and peanuts. I LOVE soy sauce but decided not to use any because I was afraid it would ruin this dish. The service was also exceptionally fast and offered a great experience even though the place was dingy and had a smoking section. Oh yea. My meal was only $8 too. What a deal :-). read more

The pho gemstone of RVA has lost it's Luster... Prices have gone up while Quality & food Portion has gone down. There has to have been a change in management and chef. I've enjoyed eating here for over 20+ years, but today was my last visit. My friends and I went there for lunch today. I ordered a large pho with tendon and steak. Because I can't eat rice noodles, I asked for extra bean sprouts. I was told it was extra. Don't know if the extra charge was a recent change, but I have never had to pay for that before. Also, the tendon was mostly lumps of fat. After removing the fat, I ate a piece and it tasted Off... One of my friends didn't even get his meal till we were halfway finished eating. Turns out, the order was never even placed. Oh, I also had a coconut boba with my meal. There were chunks of ice in it which were not at all appeasing. Next time you want good pho, head to Viet Huong in the Midlothian area. While they don't have the most attentive servers, food is definitely Better. Same price, but larger portions. Their boba smoothies are really good too (no huge ice lumps). I've also had their grilled pork chop on broken rice which is excellent. Maybe one day I'll try Pho So 1 again.. Hard to find good pho restaurants. Really. My cousins brought me here, along with my mom, since she was craving pho. Cool, no problem. I always order pho but then I saw something called broken rice. I'm intrigued. My cousin pointed out one of her friends tried it and it was amazing. Oh yes, yes it was. I love the sauce that came with it and ended up drowning my broken rice in it. Holy crap, wow.
