Phở Đặc Biệt with beef bone.
    Jason N.

My wife and I come here because we like the mom and pop vibes. It reminds us of when we're around home with the family. The soups are all good. This time I got the Phở Đặc Biệt with a side of beef bone. You can never go wrong with this meal if you know how to eat it.

This is in the Viet part of Houston's chinatown! We visited PhoTran on Bellaire Blvd and got the complimentary bone marrow and pho. Their pho was delicious! They gave generous servings of meat. Prices are very reasonable. A large pho bowl is around $13-14, and it typically lasts me 2 meals! The complimentary bone marrow is a unique part of this restaurant! If you want them to cut it off the bone, that costs extra. The complimentary bone marrow is HUGE and comes with a pair of scissors to help you. Service is fast and friendly. You pay at the end at the counter. Inside is nice and clean. I went on a Saturday around 11:30 am and was seated right away. I heard you have to show up before or right around lunch time to make sure they still have the bone marrow!

Another pho restaurant I wanted to try off Bellaire as I continue my pho quest for the best pho in town. When I ordered the pho and took it home, it showed soo much promise, I mean soo much. This restaurant gave me the most meat togo, plenty of flank, brisket, meat balls, etc... I was very impressed the amount of meat it has to go so I see the value already. Plenty of fresh herbs, bean sprouts, sliced jalapeños, basil leaves. One of the best meats and vegetables togo. Sadly what fell flat, was the soup, it had zero flavor. It tasted like water, it had zero flavor, I mean zero. No salt, no fish sauce, no sugar, I don't understand how it looks amazing but doesn't taste like it does. It has no flavoring at all. If the soup had flavor, this would be a different story. I ate all the meat and vegetables and threw away the rest.

Pho Tran was recommended to us as we were searching for pho places to try in Houston. We decided to come early in the morning around 8AM as breakfast. We were the only ones dining in at the time. I like that their pho has four different sizes: baby, small, large, and extra large. A little odd that they didn't have a "medium" on the menu. And no matter what type of meat you wanted in your pho, the price is the same. The only price differences was the size of your bowl. I decided to get their filet mignon beef pho in a small. I don't normally eat a whole lot for breakfast so getting anything bigger than that means I won't finish it. The pho came out nice and hot. Noodles were a great texture. The meat, however, was not that great. It was soft and juicy but it did not break apart easily. I had to keep chewing and chewing. The more I ate it, the more I did not want it. The broth was just OK to me. I wasn't really a huge fan. Maybe we went on and off day or maybe I just ordered the wrong meat. Overall, it was just OK. I don't think I would be back when I visit Houston again since there are so many other places to check out.

"Xi Quach", which means Bone Marrow. *If you ask for this, they will give it to you with free of charge! Very nice of them!

This is a pho restaurant that has been in Houston for a long time, and every time my family and I come by from out of state we always come here whenever we crave pho! It's ran by this sweet old Vietnamese woman (who I'm assuming is the owner) and the service is always quick and friendly. The decor of the place is typical like any other old school pho places and the space is pretty narrow, but we didn't mind all of that since it's not a modernized place. For food, I got their Pho Dac Biet (Special Pho) at a large size ($13.50) and my mom got their Bun Mang Vit (Duck Vermicelli Soup with Cabbage Salad) at a large size as well ($14.50). Prices were decent. Everything was hot and delicious! Also if you ask them for "Xi Quach, which means Bone Marrow with meat, they will give you one with no charge... and trust me it's HUGE! Overall, nice old school Pho restaurant that, although not aesthetic, has a special charm to it with their simplicity and friendly service.

When I want no-frills vibes, fast and furious service, and more importantly, a delicious and piping hot broth of pho, I make sure to go to Pho Tran. It is the quintessential dive in Bellaire Chinatown and the kind of place that is always poppin with locals. It is one of the more underrated noodle soup dives in the city. The interior is stale, with office style flourescent lighting and a handful of the usual faux-granite tables for medium sized groups. When they're busy, the wait can be 20 minutes, but most folks are usually in and out. Even the odor of the various soups they have cooking in the back sometimes permeate the dining room. I'm not complaining, it's like walking into someone's home while they make you a delicious meal. Their namesake pho is outstanding. The murky broth is a little darker than I'm used to, but it was full of flavor with a hint of salt. For the dac biet, the accompanied meats were abundant and the side condiments (especially the Thai basil) was extremely fresh. There are some nice cuts of flank and tendon and I was reasonably impressed with their bo vien meatballs. I'm not calling it the perfect pho, but definitely one that I can enjoy on any day. Additionally they also specialize in bun rieu, bun bo hue, and bun mang vit. (duck bamboo noodle soup) There aren't a lot of places out there that can churn out a quality bowl of each under the same roof, but it's something to take note for anyone who is pho'd out. I was happy with the prices and the relatively relaxed but efficient service. The latter was quick and wastes no time in getting the food to the table. English is not the primary language here, so keep that in mind if you're not able to converse in Vietnamese. I would give Pho Tran a big xe-lua (#1) style thumbs up. __________ (#1) Which btw, is available. Not a lot of places will offer a mega sized xe-lua style bowl, but it's doable here.

Local Pho place mostly just doing pho, good value for the amount of food you get. Families and other older Vietnamese folks eating here so you know it's pretty good. Strip mall with ample parking. #1 Pho with Filet Mignon - meat cooked well, still juicy with chew. Lots of noodles to go along with it. Broth is delicious but not as rich as I'd like it to be, hence 4/5. Good bowl of pho though! Vietnamese coffee - really strong, as expected. Fair price too. They have a range of silly drinks to choose from, which is exciting Food comes out pretty fast & it's a small spot so you can easily flag staff down. They get stuff done fast here, no bs. Prices are good and portions are plenty. Worth stopping by if you're in the area.

My fav place and will always come back here, love the bones that come with pho and love the staff and owners, everyone so sweet and friendly and very authentic Viet food! Coffee is good too and prices reasonable even though went up a tad too. :-(

The pho here tastes amazing but I feel like it was missing something. 4/5. Everything came out quick! The service was nice and attentive. This place got busy quick and I was glad I got seating when I did! Will come back to try their other pho menu items to compare!

I think Pho Tran might be my new favorite Pho restaurant in Bellaire.... They give sooo much meat and it's always so tender! Broth is clear and delicious. I like that they give a bit more variety of fresh vegetables too. Very hole in the wall and frequented by older Vietnamese locals which is a great sign...

Good pho and broth, very cozy inside and only a few items are on the menu so you know it's their specialty. It comes with a side of a huge beef bone for extra collagen. I came after lunch and people still kept coming in. They have a super small bowl which is perfect as well as other sizes.

OMG! This place was so busy! We came in around 11:30 am (they opened @ 11:00) and they were packed! Luckily, a gentleman just got finished so we were able to get seated as soon as they cleared his table. Chris and I each ordered the large Filet Mignon Pho. The bowl came in steaming with tasty broth, glass noodles, slices of filet mignon, sweet onions and a sprinkle of cilantro. Guests came and went and there were still people waiting to dine. The lady owner and her staff were all very pleasant and friendly. It seems like this place is the go-to for pho in Chinatown! Very pleased!

The pho was really nice and came out super fast, but it honestly did not impress me more so than any other pho restaurant. It was on the pricier side for a bowl of pho in Houston. I saw everyone eating a big bone with their pho as well, and didn't see it on the menu/realize that it was free until I read other yelp reviews after. I think that if they had advertised that, or had offered it to us when ordering, it would've made for a better experience!

The filling is placed in a pan and then a thin layer of batter made with tumeric and coconut milk yellow batter is poured on top. You wrap the lettuce around the bánh xèo/bánh khọt and dip it in the fish sauce. I got the bánh khọt and the bò né. Bánh khọt is like a mini, thicker version of bánh xèo and came with nine pieces. Their bánh khọt was crispy, sweet and savory, and went well with the fish sauce. Although the portions initally look small, they are very filling. The bò né was filling and sizzling when it came out. It also came with a side of salad. The meat was tender. I really liked the bánh khọt and would definitely come back for them. It's nice having an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in our area, close to us, so we don't have to make the trek to Bellaire every time we crave some Viet food!

I couldn't have been more wrong. Xeo Yum (#1) as it turns out is one of the most legit Vietnamese places in Midtown serving up some of the city's best banh xeo and banh khot. Located inside of a Food Hall (#2) in the back corner, they have low-key become a destination and without question, the most popular stall in the entire place. The fan base didn't happen overnight but is a direct result of Chef Cuong Nguyen's commitment to quality Vietnamese fare. Banh Xeo is their signature item, which is also known as a sizzling crepe or pancake made of rice flour, tumeric, and coconut milk. The banh xeo holds well, is perfectly crispy, and is nicely stuffed with an assortment of beans sprouts, shrimp, and some of the best grilled pork belly I've had. Another specialty item that doesn't get enough mention is their banh khot, which is similar but has a mini muffin / cupcake like appearance made in a specialty cast iron mold. This version is wonderfully crispy and pairs perfectly with fresh greens and fish sauce with some funk. It is my favorite item here. Some have argued they also serve one of the best bo ne (#3), the Vietnamese version of steak and eggs served in a skillet. The chunks of beef are nice and tender with just a tad of char, served with two fried eggs, and a banh mi baguette with a mix of butter and spare. Normally I think of spam or sausage included with the meats, but Chef Cuong's spin is with cherry tomatoes. It's a different approach and I'm not mad at it. Folks not looking for this can shoot for bo luc lac, aka shaking beef, which is also recommended. The staff here is sweet, hard-working, and very friendly. They also make a mean Vietnamese coffee and offer free iced self-serve water. The prices are what I would expect in a Midtown food hall, and there's plenty of seating. When I arrived there was nobody dining in the restaurant, that was a bit worrying, but I figured it was a bit early for the dinner crowd and late for the lunch crowd. Food & Drink - 4.5* First up was the noodles, I enjoyed them, but I wouldn't say the hype I'd heard about from some others was there. They had nice flavor, but there just wasn't anything "special." 3.5* Then it was on to the crawfish, and my oh my. Superb, the flavor is delicious and unique. This more than made up for the noodles dish. The potato and corn was good too. Service - 5* Solid. When I first arrived the owner was quietly reading a newspaper and eating his own lunch. He paused to greet me and advised that I could sit anywhere. He provided water and adequate time to determine what I wanted to order. The food came out quickly and he checked in a few times to make sure everything was ok. As time went by, the crowd of folks showing up increased quite a bit and he still managed to check in on tables consistently. Pricing - 4* This is where it was odd. Always subjective but I found the noodles to be overpriced for not only the size but what I felt was a pretty simple dish. The crawfish on the other hand was priced very competitively and made up for the overpriced noodles. I provided pics of the menu for someone to make their own assessment but in general I thought many of the dishes were pricier than they probably should be. I know inflation is certainly killing many businesses and consumers but even these felt a bit off. Overall - 4.5* This is definitely going to be one of my go tos for crawfish when in the area. The flavor is fantastic, the pricing is good, the size of them were solid. There are a couple of other dishes I may try on the next visit. I never had central vietnamese food before and never heard of most of these dishes. We saw that everyone was getting the three appetizer platter, bun bo hue, and had to try it. I also got the chicken vermicelli just as a classic. But every single item in the bun bo hue platter was jawdroppingly good. I never had anything like it before. I didn't know there were vietnamese dishes that utilized mochi flour and now I can never go back. Every single item was so good. The mochi was cooked so perfectly as every bite was so chewy and soft with no hard clumps at all. The meat that came with them as well were so sweet and tender. The vermicelli plate was awesome too as you can make a wrap with the lettuce and veggies and rice noodles and they all come together to mouthwatering perfection. I found a new spot to hyperfixate on whenever I come to houston.

My favorite appetizers (in order): Banh beo chen, Banh ram it, banh bot loc, egg rolls, crystal dumplings. Personally I wasn't a fan of the paste-y texture of the banh nam but that is a personal preference! Service is not the most hospitable but very quick. We were reseated after spotting a cockroach under our table. But even so I would come back to have this amazing food any day.

Came in to eat on a Saturday night around 8PM. They take walk ins, but we made reservations and I…read moream so glad we did. Upon arriving, every table was taken except our table w a reserved sign on it. The restaurant was bustling, but I could still hear my husband over the music and noise. The menu is huge!!! I didn't know where to start. But our server, Vanessa, helped us make a few choices. We started off w bánh xèo tostadas, bánh béo, & carpaccio. Then we had calamari and their steak special. I asked for a side of papaya slaw for some veggies. My favorite dish of the night was the carpaccio. So many flavors perfectly melded together. Loved the crunch of the fried onions and peanuts. 10/10 dish, in my opinion. Authentic banh xèo usually has an airier, crisp crepe, but theirs was more crunchy - great for their tostada take. Very flavorful. Each piece had one shrimp, but plenty of pork belly bites. The nuoc mam drizzled on it was tasty. Fried calamari - this is a big dish for, I believe, $'19. I prefer the dipping sauce on the side so that the batter doesn't get soggy. This did happen here, but it didn't stop us from finishing every last bite. The green sauce was good, not the usual dipping sauce for fried calamari. Steak special - they have another steak dish on their menu, but this one was pepper crusted w smashed potatoes. The potatoes were super crispy and flavorful and the steak was perfectly cooked - a beautiful pink medium rare. The portion was huge and justified the $39 price point. The staple steak dish came with a papaya slaw and I had to have it. It was bright and limey - I can see why they serve it with their steak. Bánh beo - my least favorite of the night. A bit thicker than I like. Still good, but there were a lot of other great dishes that I could easily pass on this one. Try their hibiscus artichoke tea.

We got there 15 minutes before to make sure we could find parking. They have a small lot but all the spaces were taken despite being before 6 pm on a weekday. And a few spots had noticeable broken glass so be careful. We fortunately found street parking close by; double checked the signs because I ain't getting towed for nothing. Then I double checked inside with staff to make sure where I parked was ok. On to the food: we got several happy hour appetizer items: soy garlic wings, Brussels sprouts, bao bun, roasted oysters. All was good but not amazing. I then ordered the pho tai chinh for myself - I was quite impressed with the portions and the price! Wifey got the lemongrass pork banh mi - good but not amazing. Overall I would say the food taste and portions were good, but note this is elevated Asian cuisine, so it'll run you $20-$30 minimum. Now the service - definitely super friendly staff. It was our first time there so maybe they brought out the extra friendliness. Even the chef came out and greeted us to make sure we liked the food. Waitress was very kind and checked on our table a LOT. Almost too much. Overall a good experience, yummy food, not a fan of the parking (a common problem in the Heights), and expensive for Asian food but that's expected. Enjoy!

It comes in a set of 2 but we got a 3 pack! I ordered the grilled branzino and let me tell you! That chimichurri sauce !! Clutch! It is demonetisation and truly grilled to perfection. My friends ordered the filet mignon and the chicken and they were equally as impressed! I ordered the espresso mousse for dessert which comes out in the shape of a coffee bean. Cuteeee and perfect! This place didn't disappoint and it is a must visit.

This is a higher end fine dining restaurant so you should expect the portion sizes and price to be pretty comparable to a lot of other finer dining restaurants. Overall the food's flavor was fantastic. I ordered the king salmon clay pot. I thought the salmon was so tasty! They added pepper and sauce to the salmon - It was tender and flavorful and paired nicely with white rice. The quail (not pictured below) also was super flavorful and was cooked so well it tasted like beef. The soup was also light and refreshing, similar to a west lake soup. It was thicker consistency and had cilantro and chucks of lobster. The drinks served were also super balanced. We ordered the mojito and the dragon fruit cocktail. The mojito was the right balance between minty and sweet with just a hint of alcohol flavor. For the dragon fruit cocktail, it was very fruity, on the sweeter side but not overpowering and was topped with egg whites to give it a little bit of frothiness. I will say, we are slightly underdressed to enter this establishment. Everything seemed so luxurious and many people were in formal business wear! Keep this in mind if you go! There is a parking deck right next to the location as well, both self parking and valet!
