This I believe was the 4th Vietnamese place to open in the capital region and they're still around so obviously they do decent business and have lots of followers. But having eaten at hundreds of Vietnamese places, I have to say their food is just "okay". The thing is, they are expensive. I don't mind paying for good stuff, but here you get neither portions nor quality. And my review isn't just based on one visit. This is my 17 year old son's favorite place probably. Been taking him here for years. I just feel it's gotten even more pricey... it is an estimated 30%+ higher cost than others in the area for their main food items. Drinks and appetizers are roughly the same. For a place with the word "Pho" in their name, I feel they should really revamp their pho offerings. Once you select all their beef choices you're looking at $14, but it still isn't a typical "combination special pho" at other places, and definitely not the size. It was one of the highest rated Colonie restaurants in Yelp, and it has a "people love us on Yelp" sticker on the front door! Small place - 9 tables. The restaurant was just about at peak capacity during our stay. Very sweet lady seems to run the place single handed We had 2 phos (meatball at $8 and shrimp at $8.75, a bun vermicelli with chicken ($8), and 3 very nice Summer rolls with chicken ($6.50). A Vietnamese Iced coffee was $4.25. The food was pretty good- the phos had great broth, and perfect noodles. But the proteins slipped a notch; the meatballs had a bland texture- like chewing air. Five small shrimp were in my pho - they were quite average. My wife said her bun vermicelli was pretty good. We all had a go at the summer rolls and they were quite good too with a good portion of chicken. Room for improvement? 1) Well, the meal timing was a bit off- the three entrees hit the table before the summer rolls did. 2) The quantity of sprouts and basil served with 2 orders of pho was smaller than what I am used to for a single order 3) The Iced coffee was an embarrassingly small size for a hefty $4.25. Well, food is actually no bad. I got spring grill pork and a vermicelli grill pork besides that the pork could use a bit more of flavor, but it was relatively good now the vermicelli looks small so I was mixing and I grab a big fork of noodles and a big clump of hairs came with Unfortunately I had to throw the whole thing away and I will never come back to that place again. They should be closed down by the food administration as obviously they're pretty careless with their customers health. The bahn mi of my dreams comes on a roll with a thin crust that shatters into a shower of crumbs when you bite into it. Inside it is smeared with a sweet mayonnaise and, if you order the "special", a thick layer of pate that's a heart attack on a bun. None of these things was happening with my ham "special" from Pho Yum. The bread tends toward a standard baguette in texture; at least the crust isn't overly hard. Inside it's dry. Pate and butter are promised but barely in evidence. The main protein is "fancy pork", the Viet equivalent of bologna. Pickled daikon and carrot were plentiful on the plus side, and there was a nice slice of cucumber and ample jalapenos. This sandwich is also very pretty (see my photo) which may be where it goes off the track a bit. Instead of street food, this is tea party food, not meant to offend anyone. I asked for the nuoc mam to add some lubrication--it sounded like a wonderful blend with fish sauce, lime juice, garlic and chilis--but turned out to be a mild sweet dipping sauce probably intended for the spring rolls. I was left craving an earthy, assertive bahn mi which fortunately I will get next week when I visit Saigon Sandwich in SF, called the best bahn mi in America in the NY Times. Today's pho, on the other hand, was great. Served piping hot and good strong broth with a hint of sugar. Non traditional but I am the one who puts sugar in my vinaigrette so can't complain. Three stars for the bahn mi, four for the pho, but I am rounding up in appreciation of the substantial improvement over my last visit. Complaints- Brisket was overcooked, I love it when it comes to the table still mooing then cooks while you are stirring it up, this didn't happen. Broth was kinda bland. Noodles were larger than I am used to, kinda made them seem overcooked. For the $$ Saigon spring gives you a good bit more soup/broth/noodles too. They also seemed to skimp on the basil a bit. I brought my friends so they could try Pho for the first time and was somewhat surprised to see how much Pho Yum charges. A bowl of pho + a choice of protein cost me around $19. Not sure why this restaurant charges so much when everywhere I've had pho in the northeast (NYC, Vermont, Mass, etc.) charge around in $11-13 for a large bowl that includes multiple meats or proteins. My two friends ordered an appetizer in addition to their two bowls and ended up paying more than $50. It's definitely not worth the price. read more

Just moved to Albany and was craving a pho fix. This place barely hit the spot; far from great broth, expensive for quite little product and lacking sate! Honestly, any respectable pho place will have a birds eye chili oil sauce to spice up and enrich the pho. This place only has sriracha, and only provides an 8th of an oz. Pho is meant to be an inexpensive dish, so charging $12 base price and providing less than a qt of broth, less than average noodles, and a skimpy amount of meat, is really disappointing. The strange addition of black pepper to the ingredients does nothing for taste and actually detracts from the flavor of the bone broth--which is lacking in spices like cinnamon, cardamom and star anise. In fact, it's actually quite a weak broth with not much complexity. Pretty sad pho overall. Now to the beef banh-mi! The individual ingredients were not bad but again, skimpy on all ingredients. That's an especially unfortunate because the bread is so bad and unauthentic that without more filling you forget you're eating a banh-mi. Why is the bread so important? Well, because that's what banh-mi means! It's a special type of Vietnamese-French baguette with rice and some wheat flower. It is meant to be light, crisp and airy. Pho Yum on the other hand uses some horrible, dense mostly wheat flower abomination. read more

Since moving to the area, I haven't been able to find a good pho place. Saw Pho Yum while driving to an appointment this morning and decided to stop for lunch on my way home. I'm so so glad I did. I got a beef bahn mi and raw round eye pho for my bf & I to split for lunch. I loved the pickled veggies on the bahn mi and the bread was sooo soft with a perfect crunch. The pho broth was sooo flavorful and I could actually taste the spices in it. My only complaint is how far away they are from my house because I would go here everyday. We were on our way from Boston to Hamilton, NY and wanted a good bowl of pho for dinner, so we looked up some Vietnamese restaurants in the area and found this place. 3.5 stars on Yelp for $ - not terrible. To be sure, I checked out the menu photo and saw $7.25 for a bowl of pho. That's a dang good price!... Until we arrived and saw the menu for ourselves. It was my mistake to not read the menu thoroughly online but I found it so misleading - and to be honest, I've never seen a menu like this. $7.25 is for a bowl of noodles and broth ONLY - meat not included. If you want to add meat, each type costs different price. Our pho ended up to be $12-$15 a bowl. Soooo expensive! And the portion is too small for such price. I gave it 3 stars (more like a 2.5) because of the quality of the soup. Undeniably, the pho tasted good and flavorful and the broth isn't too sweet or too plain (a problem we run into often). It's even better than many places in Boston. However though, the meat is thinly sliced - I mean, really really thin - and there aren't that much meat to begin with... Overall a disappointing experience. If you crave for some Viet food and there is a better option, skip Pho Yum. read more

I ordered the beef brisket pho and iced coffee, my standard pho meal. The place was not busy and had several tables open on this Friday lunch hour. The waitress was very friendly and my order was served quickly. The restaurant had brightly painted walls and unique Asian-inspired art posters. I almost took a picture of one for this review but couldn't get the lighting right to do the colors right. Suffice to say, the warm, tropical ambiance thawed my heart as the single digit temperatures had frozen it in the last few days. My soup arrived in a wide shallow bowl and smelled very good. I was disappointed to only find three thin shavings of beef in my soup. The broth was not very flavorful compared to others I've had, but it was balm for my soul on this cold February day. Happily all the condiments of sprouts, lime, jalapenos, hoisin sauce, Thai basil, and sriracha were served. I found it amusing that the sauces came in little cups as a way to control how much was used. When I asked for a second lime, the waitress cheerfully obliged. My Thai iced coffee was served in the traditional method of dripping into a cup of condensed milk. When the dripping ceases, you then pour it over a cup of ice. Sadly, I only got a couple of gulps, but they were tasty! Upon paying for my meal, I had complete and utter sticker shock that I was charged extra for the beef and my coffee was $4.95. I didn't recall that price on the menu. I enjoyed my food but I feel these prices are too much for the quantity I received. If I go back, I will just order the soup vegetarian with no meat since you don't get much anyway. Buyer beware! Very near perfect place for a quick lunch: tasty hot food, simple menu so it comes out quickly, a low-key but not low-end ambiance for a strip mall, cheap enough, and on a corner lot. The menu as noted is fairly simple which I think is essential for quality control - it's basically pho with options, banh mi with options, bun (thin rice noodle stirfry style dishes) with options, and summer rolls with options. We went for the baseline on our first visit, pho and banh mi. The pho is less rich than more "authentic" pho - less savory but also less fatty - but I would not call it in any sense bland. It's just muted, and it's not at all as sweet as some of the less inspired pho I've had elsewhere. Minor points off for out of the jar hoisin and hot sauce despite the protestations on the menu they made everything in house. The "Classic" banh mi is a really good example of the hybrid colonial food - French paté and really delicious fresh bread (wheat products being entirely an import in southeast Asia), but with the sweetened Vietnamese veggies (well, Americanized Vietnamese - carrots intead of kohlrabi and chayote, for example). Jasmine tea was standard but the coffee (café phin) came out dripping in a passes-for-traditional drip server, and was strong without being bitter. Nicely done. They've struck a reasonable compromise between swellegant (wood-finish counters and pendant lights) and updated retro-ethno (out of the stock book scenes of Vietnamese traditional farmers, in neon colors, done in shadow boxes), playing Vietnamese classical music (nice) on the PA, and it's agreeably amenable to conversation given that the tables are basically just standard formica table tops like you'd find in a Bruegger's. Again, for a strip mall, just the right balance. Service was prompt; you order via a checklist and pay at the counter but they bring everything to you, and we were attended to without being hovered over. We left at $12 a head, tip included, for one thing each plus drinks. Note the a la carte menu style: you get a "base dish" and anything you add on is an extra charge ($1.50-$3.75 at the time of our visit). Karma points off for the men's bathroom: the flush wasn't working, which was probably just as well because the electric junction box for the whole restaurant is literally hanging over the toilet bowl. I'd be afraid what would happen if there was a splashback. Technical deductions notwithstanding, warmly recommended for decent not *too* Americanized Vietnamese-"style" lunch. read more

The food here scratches an itch, but is not the highest quality Pho in the Albany area. The broth is excellent and the portions are large, while the meat tends to be lower quality. The rice noodles are usually cooked well, and the plate of bean sprouts, jalapeños, limes, and basil are decently portioned for each bowl of soup. The service is casual but good and the food is served fresh, hot, and comes out quickly. You order by reviewing the detailed menu pamphlet, then marking what you want on a tear-off a checklist sheet that is in the table caddy with the menu. The server reviews this, confirms it with the table, and takes it to the kitchen. When you are wrapping up, the check is brought to your table and you then take it to the counter to pay. The price is about average for pho and it's a nice place to visit for a quick lunch or dinner when you're craving Vietnamese food and are in the area. Just about the best lunch that you can get in Albany for less than $10. Had a bánh mì that rocked my world! The bread is the most amazing bread, so I had to ask if they bake it fresh there. They said no, they actually import daily from New York City. They tried to use an Albany bakery because they want to support local business, but that no one can really get the bread exactly right like the New York bakeries! The roasted pork was super flavorful and the pickled veggies and fresh herbs brought it all together. I also had their signature ice tea which was delicious as well. I also got the fried spring rolls, which were greasy, but the wrapping was thin, and seemed to focus more on the filling, which was nice. Having been introduced to rice desserts with mango sticky rice, I decided to leap into the sticky rice cakes as well. They were really good! A nice light treat after such a heavy meal. Brand new just opened Clean inside summer rolls ok have had better- peanut sauce had a vinegar taste... The pho was excellent especially the rib eye cut- so thin and tender... Vermicelli bowls were small and no sauces on the side all in the bowl- the noodles were very different...spaghetti type rice noodles good.... the grilled meats of tofu and chicken excellent...but the shrimp was very very small 30-40 around the mark. Great little place for a quick tasty lunch. The pho is great and what sets it apart from the other places who serve pho, is the choice to have a vegetarian soup base if you prefer.
