I placed an order by phone, was told it would take 25 minutes, ended up taking an hour only to find out that the food was ready behind the counter the entire time. Took one hour ! Had to ask for my food to be re-cooked as I wasn't about to take home the cold food they were offering. It is simply terrific. It is so consistently great that I happily travel 30+ minutes each way to pick up this great food. I've stopped in a couple more times during the colder weather to have more Pho to warm my innards and the experience and enjoyment was equally wonderful each time. This time I decided it was time to try another Banh Mi. I ordered the Banh Mi with grilled pork sausage. As my teeth sank into the toasted baguette I realized this was the beginning of a tasty experience. The pickled vegetables are next to reach your tongue. If you bite from the top of the roll you experience the fresh cilantro leaves. If you bite from the bottom, you're adding the great flavor of the grilled pork. Both are exciting to your taste buds. So far, I like the Banh Mi with the grilled pork sausage best of the ones I've tried (the classic with ham and the vegetarian were the others). I've also now identified the bakery where the baguettes come from - Bizalion's Fine Foods, Great Barrington, MA. I'm sure I'll be visiting there on my next trip there. Another first for me was trying Pho Yum's smoothies. I had a Mango one while my wife had an Avocado. I preferred mine and she preferred hers. We both ordered our smoothies with tapioca pearls which were about 3/8 inches in diameter. I had thought they would have been blended into the smoothie but they were sitting on top. The straw that comes with the smoothie is about the same diameter as the tapioca pearls. So you might be able to suck a pearl through the straw, or you may choose to capture it with the straw and bring it into your mouth. Kind of adds an interesting challenge to your beverage enjoyment! I didn't bother to describe the Shrimp Summer Rolls, the Vegetarian Summer Rolls, or the Chicken Pho that was ordered for our table because they were as delicious as previously mentioned in my prior review. We will continue to return to Pho Yum for gustatory enjoyment. read more

Having had amazing pho all myself, this is tough. It's simple and has basic Vietnames staples: the sandwich, Pho and the various meat combined with noodles. Vietnamese food is much more extensive than this-but it's a small place. I tried my usual favorite grilled chicken with noddles. The chicken was tough and not marinated well or long enough. The portions are average, not the standard " American" portions. They also don't give you enough vegetables,this makes the soup!! If you want quick, healthy and reasonably priced food, this place is a good start. I recommend Saigon Spring in Clifton Park I reviewed awhile ago. read more

The broth is some of the best Pho I have ever had. In the winter I love stopping by here for a big bowl with the meatballs. I make mine spicy and the hot soup and fresh flavors are just what is needed. I think they can do better meat, but under $10 for a big bowl, I will keep coming back. In my opinion this is the best Pho in Albany, and like I said the broth is great. It is good Pho, but it could be great, like places in NYC, with just a few better ingredients. Service was unprofessional, and the restaurant felt lifeless with the service modules and boxes of supplies everywhere, even where you eat. It was like being in a storage room. I would be ashamed to call this Vietnamese food, and it's not authentic. The waitress said, we microwave your food. I paid $20 for a bowl of soup to eat in and have a great meal, not a cold bowl of broth, and then the waitress said, let me microwave it for you again. Is this Burger King? The total of my meal was $48 less tip with two soups with an appetizer. I had a better dinner at Wendy for their $5 menu. Garbage food does not try!! read more

There's moments when you need a hot bowl of noodle soup. My pit stop here was one of those moments. There's tons of places in Albany but I needed a specific place. I searched for the closest one and decided I would come here. Walking in, it's pretty bare, a good amount of seating and it didn't seem like this place got too busy. I ordered the fresh spring rolls and a bowl of vegetarian pho. Also, it's hard to find places with veggie pho since, well duh it's supposed to be beef broth. I started with the spring rolls and freaked myself out because at first I thought it had meat in it but it was really the gluten. It wasn't a bad spring roll, very full. I think I would prefer it without the gluten because it would seem more fresh. The bowl of pho came out not long after the spring rolls, too soon! The veggie pho was okay. It had some flavor but it wasn't as full of flavor as other places I have been. Lots of noodles and broth but not a big variety on vegetables. The serve was a little slow with one girl working too. It's not the cleanest place ever but not filthy. For me, I don't think I'll make it back here because it didn't wow me and there's a ton of others to try still. read more

Like many other reviewers, my main impression is that this place is far too expensive for what you get. The broth is just OK, and the summer rolls and sandwiches are good. I frequently crave Pho, and hope springs eternal, so I've eaten here several times over several years, despite my reptile brain memory of leaving feeling cheated and hungry each time. I'm not a cheap diner...but I've been to many cities for these dishes and have never paid that. There was a sign at the table claiming the new minimum wage has forced them to reset the prices...but considering there was only one waitress working the table (with an ipad ordering system...), I smell a whole lot of barnyard hooey. The food was decent, the waitress was very friendly...but the price points are not fine at all. I get this dish for 16 with tip in Utica NY (they didn't raise their prices with the new minimum wage), and 18 in West Hartford CT. I hate this place. I called before going in on Valentine's Day to see if there was a wait, she said 15 minutes. Got there in about 5 minutes (there were about two tables) then they told me they were closed. What?? Right after us another couple came in then they said it was okay for us to eat. What???? Anyway, ordered pork spring rolls (they were bomb) Lemongrass beef pho (not the typical pho, noodles were much thicker, it wasn't too impressive) Beef brisket pho (IT WAS SO WATERED-DOWN, absolutely no flavor, it was literally the worst pho I've ever had) and I have been to many many MANY Vietnam restaurants. We came in and there was no welcome remarks or anything. The girl working there at the table just stared at us. The boy at the cashier just looked as if they didn't want any more customers. I asked if we could eat. The girl told us to find ourselves a seat. After the boy who appears to have never ever smiled in his life got our orders, we waited. We looked around and found the place has not been kept clean. We tried to pull up the blinds on the window as it is annoyingly not pulled symmetrically, it was half up and the other half down diagonally. It so painful to look at. Food came in very small serving. It tasted alright but not as we expected coming always at VAN's Vietnamese restaurant that if 10 is the highest score, VANs would be 8 and this Pho Yum in Colonie would be 4 for poor customers service, very little servings and awful ambience. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Pho Yum yet because they're so amazing! This is the perfect place for warm, comforting food that is actually good for you. Health is kind of the last thing I think about when I'm eating, because I like to enjoy my life. So it's amazing how they can craft these delicious soups and noodle dishes from healthy ingredients such as bean sprouts, basil, jalapeno, lime, onions, and scallions in a vegetable broth and make it so incredibly addictive! I usually go with the pho ga, which is the chicken soup. You absolutely have to try it will all the plum sauce and all the hot sauce they provide. A real justice to Vietnamese food with such purposeful ingredients, yet balanced and even subtle flavors. The bean sprouts add a cool crunch to the hot and delicious noodles swimming in a spicy and peppery broth. They only use the best parts of white meat chicken. I'm convinced they perfectly cook whole chicken breasts, cut only the best parts and throw the rest away. Every bit of chicken I've ever had here is only amazing, perfectly cooked, juicy tender white meat chicken. I've never gotten any fat, grizzle, or cartilage. You can tell they pride themselves on the quality and finesse they put into their dishes and it's definitely what keeps me coming back. I know I'm going to get their best, every time. I love how standard my experience is every time I order out or eat in. The only critical thing I can come up with to mention is that sometimes they seem a bit understaffed. The wait time on a busy night before you get your order taken may be about 5 minutes. But once ordered you get your food very quickly and it's amazing. So please, if there's a wait, give them the benefit of the doubt. Please don't think that they're slow all the time or something, not the case. I'm just trying to be critical in this paragraph. The pho is no exception and they're ban mi sandwiches are always fresh... however the reason for 3 stars is because for the last three consecutive online orders that I've made they have all been messed up. I've come to the conclusion that pho yum cannot be trusted to pay attention to detail enough to their online orders. One of these instances I had a vegetarian friend come over and I asked for a plane Ban mi sandwich with just vegetables and no beef. Upon opening the package it was just sliced bread with nothing in it. As you can imagine, my friend was pretty upset as we were all enjoying our meals and he got sliced bread... Today again I ordered online and left Specific Instructions to give me a ban mi sandwich, plain, with no meat and only veggies. Somehow, they messed that up and it came with meat. The only reason that i can think that he had such a poor sounding experience must be that they just opened and all restaurants take a little while to get the kinks out. Here was our experience: Service was very attentive and surprisingly speedy. The vegan summer rolls (to please kenz) were light and fresh and delicious on top of being there so quickly. I ordered the brisket pho - once again there in perfect timing when we finished the rolls. The broth was very hot and so delicious that it needed no hoisin or sriracha (but i do love it spicy so i couldn't resist as usual). the basil was fresh and bright as well as the lime and jalepeno - all of which were added w/ the sprouts. the broth was so delicious that i was offered more to go w/ my remaining noodles. The portion was so large that i had to take the rest home. I also tried the beef banh mi and was sorry that i hadn't saved that for another time when i wasn't already so full (but not sad that i got to take some home for tomorrow's lunch). it was flavorful and delicious and i can't wait to try more of the options. the decor is delightful, open and appealing and i will be bringing friends from work here as often as possible. lucky me - i work about 1.5 miles away! thank you linh for bringing this to our area! read more

The oldest story in the world next to Eve in the garden of Eden, is that familiarity breeds contempt. Having eaten between thirty and fifty times here, the true flaws show up. The owners have loud music, even when they are alone in the restaurant and simply do not understand that it is not a plus while eating. But, the kiss of death to every restaurant is when they take their regular customers for granted and treat walk ins as special. I watched a large take out order and a new couple who both came in after me, be served first while I waited more than 30 minutes and frankly had I not complained, would have been longer. I no longer look forward to patronizing a restaurant that doesn't consider fair play and their customers first. The music isn't for the owners, it's for the customers. Why would anyone need to discuss this? And people get served in the order they come in, not based on an owner's desire to impress someone they don't know. It's insane. This is the fourth Pho restaurant I have been to so far and by far the most disappointing. ---Food--- Main issues were with the flavor of the broth (bland) and the lack of sufficient condiments for the Pho (stingy). Summer Rolls had way too many noodles in it to make it have any flavor, would not order those again. ---Service--- We ordered a sandwich and a bowl of Pho. When we get our food they had brought out the wrong sandwich so we politely told them and they turned around and handed it to the only other table in the place. Not the most sanitary or nice thing to do to another customer. ---General--- My first impression of this place was noticing how the order form which you fill out to get your food are reused, just seemed cheap considering the cost of paper, makes one wonder what other corners are cut behind the scenes. Most annoying of all is the pricing of the menu, specifically the summer rolls. They have a base price of $5.50 to start, then you have to pick a filling which has an additional cost but there is no option to get just the "base" model so to speak. It's not that I dislike doing the math to figure out what things cost, it just seems like they are trying to hide the true costs of the food so it looks cheaper on paper. You know what? I really like this place. We ordered 2 orders of the shredded pork rolls, they were huge! Much larger than I expected. The basil in the rolls tasted very fresh and overall a light appetizer that tastes healthy. I ordered the chicken pho and the other person ordered the brisket pho. Huge servings, plenty of bean sprouts, lime, and sauce. I had big chunks of chicken in my soup. It's not a fancy restaurant, just sit and eat. I begin the review with acknowledging that this is my first experience with Vietnamese food. However, unlike my first experience with other Asian cuisine, I did not find myself lacking the ability to describe my meal. It is almost as if I had this concept in my head for years without knowing that this already exists. Every time I am sick, it is pho that I have been wanting and I just never knew it. I have been training my wife with cries of "Feel like poop, need soup" for almost two decades and now I know what I have been wanting. I have been adding hot sauce to soup when I have a cold all my life, they just naturally seem to want to go together. Needless to say, I consider myself a fan of pho. Yes, it's soup, but it's a really big bowl. There's a bunch of different things you get added in, like the brisket I had, which add to the filling nature of the meal. The soup is a very flavorful broth, the rice noodles fill a fork really well. The plate comes with a side bowl of Sriracha and hoisin sauce (leave out the hoisin for gluten free) which I added completely into my bowl. This brings up the sweetness and spice level of the soup nicely. The cilantro finishes with a layer of crispness that makes everything taste fresh. The staff were wonderful. They pointed out how much of the menu is gluten free, and what things to avoid to keep it such. They were pleasant and spoke with us about Vietnamese food when they heard it was our first time trying it. In all, it was great experience and I really enjoyed the pho itself. Right now, I have nothing else to compare it with, but I am excited to try other Vietnamese food. I expect we'll be back very soon. read more

Ordered the Pho Tai, beef bahn mi, and drip coffee with condensed milk. One little quirk I found, was that you don't place your order with your server. You check off what you want on a piece of paper, like you would in some dim sum establishments. Service was good. The pho had a very clean taste and included all the normal accompaniments. Not a pho or bahnmi place that any asian person would like. Fancy Vietnamese food that should be cheap and good is expensive and not good. Instead of having a standard pho dac biet for like $7-8 it's al la cart. Base fee is like $4 or $5 for noodles and soup then it's like $2 to add meat. It's $2 each so if you want some well done beef its $2. If you want some tendon it's another $2 or if you want some rare beef it's more. So in the end it's $10 to get a bowl of pho that should only cost $6 as the bowls are way smaller than what I'm use to in LA or Philly or even in a asian food desert like south Carolina which had better and cheaper pho. They don't even have sirracha on the tables. You have to ask for it and they give you a small dipping dish of it. Weird. I've never been to a pho place that doesn't have a bottle on each table. Now onto the bahnmi. It's equally expensive as the pho. Something like $6-7 for a small sandwich with one meat. The bread is not a French baguette. Instead it's a supermarket Italian roll thing that's toasted. If you've never had good Vietnamese food then you wouldn't know the difference. But trust me being an asian dude who's eaten tons of Vietnamese food this is not for most at least if you are asian and expect good pho and bahnmi. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else for pho. There is no way it should cost $30 for 2 bowls of pho and 1 bahnmi sandwich. Outrageous. After passing by Pho Yum many times, I decided to give this restaurant a try. Pho Yum is located in a rather non-descript strip mall on Central Avenue, but inside, it has a nice, quiet atmosphere, good for a small group (although I just went by myself). Also, I must add that the service was extremely efficient and courteous and that I felt that the menu items were reasonably priced. Pho Yum obviously serves pho, but they also serve other items like summer rolls and bun (which is a Vietnamese noodle like vermicelli). I tried the bun, which is a mix of noodles, sauce, escarole lettuce, carrots and chopped peanuts served room temperature (says so on the menu). I paid a little bit extra for having grilled sausage (which was served warmer than room temperature) as well. I was served my order in no time and it was a generous portion. The food was tasty and I'd like to have lunch or dinner at Pho Yum again. read more

Pho Yum was sparsely attended on Father's Day. Where are people taking their dads? The Olive Garden? I'd never been here before so didn't know what to expect. There's only about 5 dishes and the same variety of meats for each dish. I've never had pho before, and for whatever reason, I went in expecting the food to be very spicy. Well, come to find out pho isn't spicy at all, and the warning on the menu ("Caution: Pho is extremely hot!") only refers to the temperature. Everything was actually delicately flavored. I had rice with grilled chicken, and there was something subtle going on with the rice which I liked a lot. The shrimp spring rolls were nice with about 12 shrimp total. Everyone polished off their dishes no problem. The plates aren't huge, but what do you expect paying $6-7 for a dish? It's cheap, healthy food, and you leave not feeling like a fat sea lion. If I lived closer, this would be a great place for takeout. read more
