My husband and as well as colleagues have been coming here since Pho Zen opened. It was really good before. Since undergoing "updated" interior and new management it's not the same. Service has gone downhill; food is blah average at best; prices have gone up. We were disappointed on our last visit but thought maybe they were having a bad day. It happens. Just came in for lunch today .. while in process of ordering, waiter interrupted to seat some people that walked in. I'm highly disappointed in this establishment. This WAS my favorite neighborhood restaurant until about 2 months ago when 1) I go there and doesn't matter what time of day, there are no parking spaces. The parking lot is shared with 4 or 5 other establishments and if you park next door near the office buildings, you WILL get TOWED; 2) It takes at least 10-15 mins for someone to come over, greet you and take a drink (or meal order) when you enter the establishment though it's kind of a seat yourself kind of cafe; 3) The prices have increased and the portions of food are smaller and not as filling. 4) Chicken Pho doesn't have as much flavoring as Beef Pho. I've had better, and just about less than 2 miles down on Gessner, there's a "hole in the wall" Pho establishment that serves some authentic vietnamese soup and other dishes, and for a reasonable price and good portions. Nice little mom and pop joint, well lit, clean tables, they do need to run a clean mop over the floor, quick service and pleasant staff. Now make your pho better than average and I'll eat here a lot as you are closer than my fav pho evah - Pho One. Prices were more than reasonable and I liked that they offered 3 sizes of bowls of pho. I got the small bowl for around $6 and it was plenty. Think Goldilocks when you order: Baby sized. hungry mama sized and big Daddy sized. I got the shrimp pho as was recommended by the waiter. I got about 6 nice sized real shrimp! Cooked nicely with tails on. The broth lacked much flavor. And the shrimp added nothing to it as it sat in the broth. Sad face. The wife got the rare beef and meat balls. I don't know what kind of protein they use to make those meatballs but they were so unappetizing she pulled them out and sat them aside. I don't know if the meat was even real. The rare beef was good though. I wouldn't recommend the meatballs. The broth didn't lack the flavor mine did. However, the meat never added to the broth flavor. Thai tea - tasty and cheap at $1.50 Deep fried spring rolls - serving of 4 served nice and hot and not greasy Vietnamese spring rolls - wife got 2 pork and they had a surprising charcoal flavor None of the apps were extra special but serviceable and not over priced. Don't think that all pho is created equal. If the broth is not right or the protein you choose is off putting, it's just not gonna cut it. So while this pho was tasty it is not the best pho I have found in this area. And what is it with the early closing time? Who closes a restaurant in Houston at 8pm? Half the people in the city are still sitting in traffic at 6 and don't make it to the restaurant until 8. Especially on a weekend. read more

Ordered large pho tai for pick up. I ordered extra jalapeños and a coke, I didn't receive either in my order. The taste of the pho was average, the broth wasn't perfectly clear or anything but it did taste like pho broth. To-Go experience: I order pho to go pretty regularly in this area from a lot of different places, and only a few restaurants (pho binh) pack the pho broth at a high enough temperature that stays hot enough over the 10 minute trip home. The broth MUST be hot enough to cook the raw slices of beef in the bowl. But Pho Zen packs broth at a lower temperature and in a thin plastic container, a poor insulator, so I had to heat the broth up before I could eat. Sit down experience: Pho always tastes better when you eat it at the restaurant vs take out in my opinion. Portions are generous, I did get my extra jalapeños and coke when I was there in person. There wasn't anything about the experience that made it exceptional, though. Average pho with below average to-go service. read more

SERVICE: I've had lunch here over the years, off and on. The food was fine. They then remodeled, new management recently...so we went last week. Was on a weekday around 6:15. There is a single patron eating in the restaurant. We ordered early dinner to go. So, we get to the front counter to order, and WHILE I was speaking, the dude working the front counter taking my order simply walks off to do something. He comes back, picks up his pad to continue taking my order, a customer walks in and he stops taking our order AGAIN and seats them, gives them menus and takes their entire order. HE DID THIS 3 MORE TIMES!! LOL. So, it takes about 8 or so minutes to take my order, since the customers eating in are way more important. After he finished taking our order, there were a total of 6 patrons eating, and two guys waiting for take out. All of them had been taken care of....except for us who got there before any of them. By the time our order was handed to us 45 minutes later, everyone had finished eating their meals, paid for and had left...while we were just getting our take out. FOOD: So, I'm starved...we get in the car and I bust out a banh mi sandwich. The meat is cold...like, it's been sitting out a lonnnggg time. The bread mushy. The flavor was off. We get home and begin eating the rest of our food. Nothing was normal...the fried rice looked like cajun dirty rice...it was totally weird and there was no beef in it! We ordered beef fried rice. Then, my wife's chicken dish has only a few measly overcooked portions of chicken in it. Same with my shaking beef...and the shaking beef was tough and overly sweet. Totally not traditional shaking beef by any means, and no lime/salt/pepper was included. Anyway, as you can see, this place either had someone cooking in the back who had no idea what the recipes are or they have gone mental with the new management. LASTLY...their roof was leaking all over the front counter and floor. Like some dang tropical jungle rain pouring down all over their counter and floor...they acted like it wasn't there. They put all of their plants in the leaky area as if it were to look like it was some dang watering system, haha! It was nasty yellow water too...man. Decent pho place for the Westchase area. Parking might be an issue since it's in a small shopping strip with other retailers, but if you go after 1:30 it shouldn't be a big issue. All the reviews must have been written by friends of the owner or something cause I don't know how it can have 4 stars. And to confirm the notion that this place is not good, I've been there twice. The first time I went I had chicken pho which is pretty hard to get wrong, but it just didn't taste GOOD. If you ask my husband, he'll say my food standards are pretty low, so me saying it doesn't taste good really means it tasted pretty bad. Anyhow I went back today and ordered a Chicken Vermicelli to go.... TASTE: very bland, chicken (thighs, not breast) lacked flavor, cook forgot cilantro, had to ask for basil, vermicelli was cooked well, carrots don't belong here, fish sauce dipping cause was not seasoned properly. PRICE: pics of the menu on Yelp are not current. For example the Chicken Vermicelli shows $7.25 but it's $7.99. And I ordered to go so they charge you $0.50 for to go. This price is more than $1 higher than other Viet restaurants...and when you order from other places (such as Le Viet) it comes with a soup and an eggroll (which this place does not). PACKAGING: when you order to go (and they charge you for that) they put the sauces in the same container with the food which takes up 1/4 of the to go container. So they charge your more to get less. And they don't give you chopsticks. Eating vermicelli with a fork is actually very hard to do. This place sucks. read more

I pass by this place all the time on the way to work so I decided to stop there for lunch. This was a huge mistake. All I ordered was a Wong tong soup and a Bon Mi sandwich. I waited over 45 minutes for my order. I saw people eat and leave while I was still sitting there. I asked once for a update and the lady told me there were many other people ahead of me. By this time I had already been waiting for 25 minutes and there was only four people in the restaurant. Then another customer came in. She's was also upset because she put in her order an hour ago through the phone and had been sitting there for 15 minutes waiting on her order that should have already been ready when she arrived. We both were upset. We waited longer then ask them what was going on. They really had no answer for us. I wanted a refund but they could not even do that for me. ( I don't think she knew how) I had to wait a total of 50minutes before my order was done. I was super frustrated and my whole break was wasted on waiting on my food. I felt even worse for the lady next to me because she was a nurse who had been giving vaccinations and Covid test all day she was so hungry and had had got food for all of her coworkers. By the time I left she had still not received any of her food. Being honest I should have never received my food if her order was not finished. She had put in the order over an hour ago and I had just came in to order. There is no reason she should have still been waiting on her food when I left. The person running the register did not seem like they cared it was taking this long. I was excited to try this new place. In hopes that it would be my new lunch hang out since it's so close to work. However, after this experience I will never go back. Plus the food wasn't even that great. We go to Pho Zen at least once a week. The folks that run/own Pho Zen are very nice and accomodating. Our favorites: the pork/shrimp spring rolls as appetizer; the won ton soup and tom yum soup and shrimp pho are also great. My husband alternates between the beef bon mi with egg and the pork vermicelli. I don't recommend the chicken salad. It is just "okay" compared to everything else on the menu, which is great. Compared to most pho spots (taste wise) this place is pretty average. The broth was consistent with most, nothing special about it tbh. The portions are what most confused me though, I got a regular size which I believe was around 9$ and I am not exaggerating when I say there were only five small pieces of rare steak in my soup. I think that was a huge miss on their part. Considering the prime location (westheimer) I think they could be doing better. In their defense , the parking is a nightmare. Its in an awkward little corner with a few other businesses making it hard to really see on westhiemer. Considering that and overall pho I most likely won't be coming back here. Way too many better spots around, even Pho & Crab down the way is a little more expensive (like a dollar if that) and the portions that includes the meat inside is way generous. read more
