Workers are friendly. But there is an awful that turned out to be the wind hitting the aluminum hand rails on the balcony. Front desk said there is nothing they can do. We reserved this online several months in advance. When we arrived we parked on the first parking area and I went up to the 1st floor for check in @2pm. I was told our room wasn't ready... ummm people check out at 11:00am and you knew I was coming so just why..? So I did the paper work and we decided to go to a gift shop just down the street because she said it would be an hour wait, we walk in the gift shop and front desk calls and says "oh it's ready" so right off we were not impressed. Anyway we load our luggage for a family of 6 on a cart, this is off season so it's not even full, they send us up to the 8th floor we wait forever for the elevator and I'm not even kidding about that! We make it up, unpack. The AC kicks good and the unit is ok, nothing special for the price, you are just paying for the beach view off your tiny deck and easy walk access to the beach. Honestly you could stay in a nicer hotel for cheaper (and breakfast with better room service) and do a walk or free parking to get to the beach. I have no pic of the pool but it goes to 6ft on deep end and was clean but super narrow and long. Also on the right hand side elevator they leave the large containers of soiled bedding and the smell is awful. read more

I would have given this five stars if not for the 45 minute delay in check in while kids were going nuts waiting. The place was well maintained. The view was spectacular. The room was very nice. We bypassed the pool for the beach, but it looked nice and there was a kiddie pool as well. I have to say not only the beach view, but the street view was also very nice. Yes I would recommend this for any family, we had six with us and slept comfortably. The only other negative had nothing to do with the suite, but the person smoking pot on the balcony in another suite that really made it stink. We loved the layout of the suite - separate bedroom, full kitchen, living area and a second 1/2 bath. The building, appliances, etc. appear to be pretty old, but everything was neat, clean and well-organized. Bed was very comfortable, contrary to what we expected at first glance. Pillows were also comfortable and plentiful. Elevators are old and extremely slow. Luggage carts are old and not in great shape. Ice maker actually made plenty of ice. Soap provided is too small for an extended stay. Spacious closet and storage space. Daughter and grandson enjoyed the pool, kiddie pool and beach access very much. My husband commented that we should have been staying here on past visits, and we hope to do so in the future. Our stay here definitely helped brighten our first few days of post-Hurricane Ida evacuation. Unfortunately, we had to relocate to a much lower quality hotel due to the huge increase in rates for Labor Day weekend. Overall, we were very pleased with this hotel. read more

What a view! What a room! What a fantastic place! 5 Stars! The view we saw when we walked in more than matched the pictures on the website. As we arrived, the sun was slowly setting in the west as the last lights of the day transformed the sky into a wonderful sunset. Oh, and the view from the balcony is also great to catch the first glimpses of the dawn as the sun rises out of the ocean. The condo itself is spacious and clean as were the beds, bathrooms and closets. We were in Room 402 with 1 King, 2 Queens and 2 1/2 Baths. All the bedrooms were well appointed, all the appliances were in working order including the washer and dryer, ice-maker, toaster and coffee maker. This coffee maker will accommodate flat bottom filters, K-cups, and coffee pods/packets. The kitchen was well stocked with plenty of utensils and cookware. As a reminder, you are expected to bring some of your supplies - paper towels, toilet paper, beach towels, food, etc. Pack as if most of what you would want may not be there. We did stop at the Publix Grocery not far down the road on our way in for the perishable foods we needed for our stay. This Unit is managed by Brett Robinson and all the staff we dealt with were quite good and very helpful. This includes the folks that take care of the beach benches and umbrellas ($25 per day or $100 per week). Remember, they do work for tips and are hard workers. We had an unexpected highlight one morning when we were treated to a display of a dozen or so dolphins right outside our window for about 15 minutes as they frolicked in the ocean in front of our balcony; they ate their breakfast while we ate ours. Such a pleasant treat to see so many at one time - and we didn't even have to pay for a boat tour. I realize the folks of Phoenix IX were not responsible, but because we stayed here we were able to see them. Since we stayed there in the off-season, the beach was not crowded and mostly not too hot. Personally I enjoyed hunting for shells and found several "keepers". TIP - don't just look at the shoreline - wade out about 5-10 feet and you too may find some "not so common" shells as I did. Only a couple items of note. Some of the doors "squeaked", so trying to be quiet in the mornings was a bit hard. The only other item of concern was the doors to the Balcony. The glass door is quite heavy and hard to open one-handed (coffee); the screen door has been opened so many times that it has become difficult to open, especially one-handed. Perhaps the management will have addressed these concerns before your visit. read more

Morning staff was rude! Stated we couldn't check in early, check in at 4pm, but would let us know when room was ready. NEVER did. Checked in at 4:30, afternoon staff was good. Got to the room & when we turned water on it was rust coming from facet, so that told me no one was in the room prior to our arrival! Room is outdated but nice. read more

Great find. We came during spring break and this hotel is very family friendly. Great room layout, and plenty of space. Our 6 year old loved the bunk beds. All rooms have private balconies that overlook the beach. Maid service every day (if you need it). The location can't be beat. It's within walking distance to everything. I wish the pool was a bit bigger, but we're not complaining because the beach access and location overrode that. The beach in front of the condo did not get super crowded and we really liked that. With it being so close to the Hangout and public beach access, this could've been a completely different scenario. Will definitely stay here again. read more

All in all, we would recommend the Phoenix and would return ourselves. We are a young, married couple with no kids. Pros - Location! Right on the beach. Every suite has a direct view of the ocean. It's centrally located near all of the "excitement" of Gulf Shores. It's located near lots of restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Great walkability. Amenities - Very few hotels in the area have full kitchens stocked with the appliances and utensils you need to cook basic meals. King beds in every suite was also a plus. Suites could sleep 4 adults - 2 on the bed, 2 on the pull out couch. There are 2 additional bunk beds that could sleep children. As it was the very end of Spring Break (week after Easter), it didn't feel crowded, loud, or rowdy. Parking was also ample and convenient. Cons - Elevators - So slow! Even though there were 2 elevators servicing only 9 floors, there was an a average wait time of 5 solid minutes or more. The hotel wasn't full by any means either. We often faced the "difficult" decision to wait for the elevator or hoof it up to the 6th floor. WiFi - Didn't work (basically). We didn't use the wifi because the internet on our cell phones was much, much faster. Cleanliness - It should be noted that our standards of cleanliness are pretty basic. As long as there are no smells or stains, we hardly ever care enough to express our concern. That being said, we arrived to a suite that was "clean enough, I guess". The floor needed another vacuuming and mopping. The bathroom had some traces of prior guests on the floor. The kitchen had some food left under the floor cabinets. The worst part was the sand. We understand the nature of a beach hotel will constitute sand on the floor, but there was enough for us to notice on a daily basis. There was also a candy wrapper that was left on the floor between the couch and side table. As mentioned, it was easier for us to clean up the small messes ourselves rather than express our dissatisfaction with hotel management. Therefore, we can't say how the hotel would have responded. Turn Down Service - As far as we know, the hotel doesn't really offer a traditional daily turn down service. There could have been some miscommunication between me and the housekeeper as well. We arrived in the evening on our first night and basically went straight to bed. The housekeeper knocked on the door around 10:00 the following morning and I explained that we wouldn't need any housekeeping services that day. She may have interpreted that as we wouldn't need any housekeeping services for the remaining 3 days we were there. We didn't run into the housekeeper again, but know someone came in everyday seemingly just to empty the trash. We didn't receive any change of bed linens during our stay, which was fine. We always had enough towels, as we chose to hang up and reuse them. We did continue to notice the sand in the floor, though. It didn't appear any daily vacuuming was taking place. We got used to wiping the sand off our feet before getting into bed. Again, none of this we brought up to the management, so take it for what it's worth. Overall, the pros outweigh the cons. If we return to Gulf Shores, we'll definitely consider the Phoenix for the location and money-saving kitchen amenities. read more

They warned us about the Hurricane.. but we stayed anyway. We planned the vacation for months.. kids, and grandkids all at the beach for a week.. Wife chose this hotel. Paid the going rate and three weeks later receive about a 30% refund because the week we chose was 'off season' and cheaper. We get there just as preparations for "Hurricane Hugo" are under way. The management called and said if we wanted to evacuate with the others that they'd refund our money. But we stick it out on the ninth floor (park the car on the elevated parking lot on the second floor). We watch a waterspout run by the hotel out our window.. and the water didn't rise as much as anticipated. the double red flags (saying 'stay out of the water' didn't come down until the last day of the vacation), but the power never went out, and we still found plenty to do in the local area. The room could have fitted a few more people comfortably, but we had fun and the weather can't blame the hotel for the weather. read more

We've been coming here for several years, but things went WAY downhill this year. There was food (and other stuff we could not identify) around the unit, and the floor was really grimy, to the point where we did not want to walk around in our unit in bare feet. The cleaning staff seems to be poorly trained, since they only come around in the late afternoon (which is when people are in from the beach). The TV was janky, and one of the lamps was broken. Building staff didn't really seem to care enough to properly clean the unit when we brought these issues to their attention. Did I mention the elevators, which are painfully slow and dingy? There are much better places on the beach at the same price point. AVOID. read more

Phoenix All Suites was a very expensive hotel, but perhaps the costs were elevated because we went over Labor Day weekend. The hotel itself was okay, but we were fairly disappointed in the service. When we arrived, we asked the front desk for a list of restaurants and activities in the area, but were told by the receptionist, "We really don't do that." We also called the front desk and asked them to call a cab for us and were again told, "We don't do that." We were told that local calls were free, but when we called a company with the same 251 area code, we were charged $1.00 because it was "outside of the zone" (whatever that means!). When we called down and asked for housekeeping to bring us towels and toilet paper, we were told to come down to the front desk instead. I didn't mind the walk down, but it seemed rather odd to me that they didn't seem too keen on customer service. Then, we asked if we could print our boarding passes and they told us again that they didn't do that. We had gone inside a couple other hotels (to get breakfast at the house cafes) and they all had computer/printers in the lobby, so we were surprised that our hotel was so against that. I guess that most of the people who vacation there drive up. Finally, the front desk told us that they would "try" to let us print our passes, but only if the computer allowed them to go to the Southwest site and only if they weren't too busy to get to it. Um, what? There was literally not a soul in the office, but I was told to come back between 3 and 4 (which just happened to be check-in time, meaning they would definitely be busy!). Maybe it is because I am from Chicago and we have an enormous public transportation system, but I could not believe how difficult it was to get around. The cabs were expensive and every company we used was extremely late picking us up, all with the excuse that they were busy dropping people off at Flora-Bama. The room itself was decent, but not what I'd expected for the cost. The floors were sandy and the bathtub had a ring of old sand in it. I understand that it is probably not easy to avoid tracking sand because of the location, but the room could have been cleaned better. They also left us a dish sponge to do the dishes but did not leave any dish soap. We were only staying for four days; did we really need to walk over to the dollar store and purchase a container of dish soap? The half bath (i.e. closet) did not have a working light. The best part about the room was the view from the balcony. The location was good. The walk to the beach was easily accessible and took mere minutes. The beach was beautiful and the pool area was okay. It was mostly filled with adults who were screaming, swearing, and drinking lots of liquor, so be careful if you take impressionable children there. We were able to walk to all but one of the restaurants. The Gulf Shores Zoo(featured on the Animal Planet), the Hangout, and the Pink Pony Pub were all within walking distance. There is about 6,000 Surf Style stores in the area, so if you want to grab a good souvenir, that's the place to go. However, keep in mind that you will hear the same Surf Style commercial song enough times to think that you are being brainwashed. I would probably not stay here again, because I just wasn't that impressed. However, if you live close enough to drive there, you'll probably have a better stay than us. read more
