Updating to accommodate the last couple of experiences and drop a couple of stars unfortunately. Dropped in for lunch, sat at he bar and ordered a chili dog. Waited for 35 minutes, I've seen it much busier and haven't waited that long for a chili dog before. So, asked the bartender, she went to the kitchen, and it appeared they forgot my order. No biggie in general, but when it arrived 5 minutes later, it was sort of dropped in front of me. The the chili dog was hanging off my plate with the chili dripping on the bar. So, lost my appetite for a chili and left. Also, lately the chili has had large, chewy hunks of beef that take forever to chew. Add that to not having a Belgian style beer (personal preference), and there being additional dining choices downtown has put the Phoenix at the bottom of my downtown list. read more

Very good food, fast service. Loved the wide selection of draft brews. Vegetarian options were a big plus, yet still had enough to satisfy the carnivores too. Exciting plus was the history of the place. It's a must see. read more

The birth place of commercial chili powder !!!! Lots of beers on tap, plenty more in bottles & cans. Live music quite often, food menu while limited, is pretty good. Absolutely love this place! The ambience and Decour is a little different from the other "pool pubs" downtown NB. "Mario" has been here working nearly every time we come in ( guess he works a lot) and really remembered previous conversations we have had prior visits which made me feel good like he was actually sincerely engaging ! Love the bands and live music this place has ! Especially "bird dog" with the red headed brothers - those guys put on a awesome show! Really enjoy Daniel Phipps's and many others as well! Saw this on the Day Tripper and food network, it was disappointing to say the least. Tourist trap! We went for the chili, 6.95 for a large bowl however bowl was small consisting of about 5 bites. Onions, cheese, beans all extra .75 to a dollar extra. We had 2 bowls of chili and 4 beers for 80 bucks, I asked to have bill reviewed and it was correct. Not worth 80. On a positive note the service was good and there was a large selection of beer on tap. Not worth it, save yourself some money. read more

They have a large selection of beers on tap, and a fine selection of your favorite liquors. The restoration they did is incredibly well done. It's like stepping back in time to a more relaxed pace. They have live music almost every day/night of the week, and they bring some great talent to the stage. The chilli meat is off the HOOK, on fritos, on a hot dog, in a bowl, we have mild, but they have the meltdown hot stuff too. Movie night on Mondays, Thursday nights are karaoke. Kids are welcome before 9 pm, we love to watch the kids dance while we eat. If you are in New Braunfels noon or night, stop in and check out the leg lamp over the bar back. read more

Second visit, first time for dinner. Pretty good service, descent choice of beer. However, the burgers were overdone and the rolls were burnt. The hot dog (gourmet type dog) was presented nice but it was mostly bread. Chili was very good. The negative experience was when the bartender gave excuses for the cook overdoing the burgers i.e. "The cook was busy" / "had a trainee" etc! We countered those excuses and a couple of more she came up with because the cook and prep areas were in full site so we watched the cook prepare the food and he wasn't busy or distracted. She did tell us that the cook was "their" favorite cook, but she never said anything to the cook. I did tell her the flavor of the burgers were good but the patties were dried out/overdone. Not sure if I'll return. The total line of the bill was a bit high also. (No detailed receipt was given). Bottom line: it filled our appetite but not our expectations. read more

After floating the river all after noonn we met a couple more friends here.. First time here so we sat at a table and waited for service... No one came up. So i went to the bar and stood there for 9 minutes waiting. It was 7pm so they were not busy. I ordered 4 burgers with fries. Paid just under $60 when the food arrived in a timely mannor, there wasnt enough food to justify the amount paid!!!! I had ordered the bluecheese bacon burger. None of tbe burgers had any blue cheese anywhere to be found. When we asked the lady working she said o ya its cooked into the meat. So while she was standing there we cut into the burger and asked her again where the bluecheese was.. We were not trying to be rude but you must make sure your customers are getting what the ask and pay for.. Small amoumt of fries and the burger was very dry...will not return to this place for a while. I always give second chances in case of them having a bad day. Great beer selection and friendly bar staff. We were there twice and ordered the Chili on the second visit. Really good chilli, they were on some TV show for the quality of the Chili and it did not disappoint, the corn bread was also outstanding. We were traveling from Dallas to San Antonio and stopped at the Phoenix Saloon for lunch. I have a lot of food allergies, so I e-mailed ahead, and they absolutely bent over backwards to make sure I got food that was safe for me to eat - and it was good! They prepared for me to the point that the bartender knew my name when I got there. My fiancé had the chili and said it had really good flavor. They grilled me a chicken breast and even offered to go toast my gluten-free bread. I love football, and the game was on - and if I could still drink beer, I would be really excited about their selection of drafts. Seriously, we'll go back the next time we pass through. Not that impressed with the service. Musical always good. Think one bartender was new didn't have a clue what Zeighen Bock was (lol can't spell it). Ok so the chilli is awesome cornbread a little dry/cool...update went back again service is terrible same two people on Sunday as last time. Even if you are ordering food they want you to open a tab. I just ordered chilli and had to pay right then didn't bother to order a beer. I got water when the bartender finally noticed it she didn't even bother to put ice in it. While sitting there at the bar a guy came up and said he wanted to cancel his order because everyone who ordered at the same time at his table had gotten and finished their food. Even with my order I noticed they aren't too quick to check on food that is sitting at the pickup counter. This place was once pretty awesome I've been told but is now in need of revamping. I'm pretty lax on giving bad reviews, but this place was ridiculous. Be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes because you have to order at the bar. Several of my friends ordered simple, easy-to-make BLT's which took literally an HOUR AND FIFTEEN minutes to get their food, at which point we were already leaving. At several intervals during this period, we inquired on the status of the orders and asked to speak with the manager. The bartender was rude and a little drunk, giving the excuse that the kitchen was busy. But, let's face it, there's no excuse to food taking that long. When we finally got to the manager, he deservingly comped their meals, but offered little remorse. Finally, if you order a burger, be sure to tell them how you like it, else you'll get ground beef still mooing at you. I will not be back. read more

Stopped in today to check out the chili. The chili is really good! However it was served with mealy cold cornbread. The server said sorry for that. As for the place itself, I was disappointed at the condition. Pretty much run down and not well maintained. Much like the Freiheit Store. Yet Another talked up place in New Braunfels (where I was served cold onion rings) that is run down as well. I would contribute that to a combination of poor management/ownership in both cases. Seemed the crowds in the area of the Saloon were taking their dollars to the neighboring businesses. Football playoff Sunday a not more than ten people in there. Maybe because of the poor viewing on the large TV. Not sure whats up with that. Anyway. I can make chili as good at home, so as with Freiheit, I will not be returning. Come on folks. Not sure why the negative reviews recently. This is one of my favorite bars in New Braunfels, good beer selection and GREAT burgers. People complaining about the service, do yall not see the signs EVERYWHERE saying if you want to order something to go up to the bar? This is an old style SALOON, NOT a restaurant. Walked in the back door to enjoy their out of sight chile infused burger and took a seat. After waiting about 10 minutes for someone to ask me what I would like, i walked over to the bar and noticed a sign stating to order food at the bar, fair enough. I mention to the lady barkeep that you can not see that sign when you enter from the side door. In a rather rude voice she said that she tried to holler out to me when I came in. I informed her that I was hearing impaired and didn't hear her or appreciate her letting me set there all that time. Very cool little place. Lots of history that's evident upon entering. Dig a little and find out even more. Location is nice with parking behind the building. When there's live music, it sounds great in the room. I have limited experience with the food. The hamburgers are a strong 8/10, and the basic chili is good. If you heat up your chili, they just top it with a variety of peppers. That part feels like a cop out, but I could only imagine how much they'd waste if they did it differently. Service is prompt. Lots of taps and a great variety. read more
