I came here twice during my recent visit to Anchorage, AK. The prices are more expensive than the lower 48, but for the limited Vietnamese food options, I understand. The quality here is fresh, and the vibe feels like you're in Portland, OR. I love that there are some Alaskan influences to the food like adding smoked salmon to the fresh rolls that are usually made with shrimp. I know it's called Phonatik, but they also have a lot of other Vietnamese food options on the menu beyond pho. Another unique aspect here is being able to pick your own toppings for pho, and they have a lot!, including oxtail. Service here is good too. We've been coming year since they opened. Their service has definitely gone down hill in the past few months. We had an issue and they said one order of wontons was going to take 2 hours. Then we stopped going for a couple months and we decided to give them one more shot. They didn't even speak to us until we had been sitting there for 15 minutes. Food is AMAZING every single time! Service, however, is very poor. A table that was seated after me was served before me, and I waited at least 15 minutes before being asked if I was already helped. Minimal communication between staff and confusion between sections is apparent. All-in-all, will be dining here again. I can't believe this place is still open! I called in our order for take out and was told my food will be ready in about 20 - 30 minutes. Went to pick up my food and I had to wait another 20 minutes. I asked what was taking so long and I was told that it is on its way out. Well it wasn't, they forgot about it! I then asked for a refund, as the employee at the register was counting out the cash, he asks me if he could keep the change (refund $34.95) SERIOUSLY??!!! I couldn't believe it! Their food is delicious, amazing pork bahn mi, grilled pork rolls, and very good pho. Their service always leaves a bit to be desired for me. Take out takes forever and is still usually not ready when you arrive. Even done in service can be very slow. Love this place. Only downside is it is much more like a normal american restaurant and less like it other Pho counterparts. Your food can take 15-20 mins and sometimes there is a wait. I have never regretted it though as the Pho has upfront flavors of Cinnamon and clearer broth then any I have had elsewhere. They also make their own noodles! A must have place. read more

I love the fact that you can get 3 different sizes of Pho. I usually get a small and I am good to go. Just a note, if you do takeout orders, they only do a medium or large. I am a fan of the rare steak on the side. It is so yummy and the broth to noodle ratio, I think is perfect. Now on to the super good stuff. I could eat the grilled pork rolls everyday. Seriously, I am thinking of doing just that during the week. Hey, I get my protein and veggie all rolled up in one. lol. The peanut sauce is ok. I personally like to mix the hoisen and sirrachi sauce together for dipping these little rolled up bites of goodness. I will admit, I haven't tried any other rolls, I keep going for the sure thing. We wanted to give it another try so we come in and they were closing so we tried to place a take out order but they won't even do that. The following week I called to place an order. I was put on hold for 30 minutes and then the call dropped. I even tried to call them on my other phone while I was on hold in case they have call waiting, but the line was busy .I think I've given them enough a chances and they've proven that their service is just poor. read more

Stopped in today for a pho fix, a dear friend recommended it. We LOVE pho and are always willing to try a new place. The service was excellent, facilities were clean, seating was comfortable. The stock was very aromatic, not salty at all. The hubby abandoned had the seafood pho and I had the rare steak. We will definitely visit here again. I've been to this place many times and have simplified my experience down to one word: decent. The entire inside felt like I was in a freezer even though it was a cold day for the summer. It was literally warmer in my car that we parked outside of the restaurant for 30 minutes. The calamari was cold towards the bottom of the plate and somewhat warm on top (taste was fine). The other dishes were great though. This place definitely has some of the best service around town, I have to say. Maybe I'll come by again. PS I've been there two times in a row and both times they were out of bean sprouts and basil.. Not sure how that works. read more

We got forgotten and had to wait about 50 mins for our food. When we did get our food it was ok but nothing special. The pho beef broth did not have much flavor or body. I had to add a bunch of hosin and suracha to it so that it had some flavor. It was also really expensive for what it was as compared to other pho places that I have been to in Anchorage. This was some seriously excellent pho! Savory broth, lots of quality choices for items to add in, and great flexibility in getting exactly what you wanted either in your bowl or on the side. I got some of my ingredients served in the broth, and others on a plate with my pho, for example, and it was no problem. All three of us in our group had the beef broth, although we each had a different combination of ingredients in our pho that pretty much encompassed all the different options. All the ingredients we had were fresh, well-prepared, and flavorful. We split the grilled pork spring roll appetizer as well, and the rolls were very good - extremely flavorful pork, crisp greens, and a great peanut dipping sauce. Our server was a young guy who was friendly and good at his job. He checked to see how familiar we were with Vietnamese food and pho before offering recommendations on menu items, which I appreciated. Also, when he found out everyone in our group liked spicy food, he showed us a way to layer the pho ingredients, sauces, and hot peppers that I hadn't tried before and which was absolutely delicious. Considering the trendy decor and the high-quality food, the prices were really reasonable. It was $9 for a "medium" bowl of pho, which was an extremely hearty serving. I am not a dainty eater, and I was stuffed. Our group of 3 ate ourselves to a standstill on delicious food for less than $40, including tea and an appetizer.
