    Tsukemen noodles with pickle plate
    Dan A.

My favorite restaurant in Anchorage , by far. The layout of the restaurant is street level entrance with downstairs dining. The staff is just over the top amazing. Antonio greeted me at the door and sat me in just a few minutes. I was seated at the bar counter downstairs. A dark intimate hip place. The guys behind the counter were Cory, Kendrick, and another young gentleman I didn't get the name of. They were happy people and it showed. I saw from the yelpers they had Tsukemono (Japanese pickles) and my second favorite Tsukemen (dipping noodles) . I ordered both and was pleasantly surprised to see the pork belly was perfectly roasted, the 6 1/2 min egg was on point, and the noodles and broth were absolutely amazing. I am a Tsukemen fan and this place did it right. I then ordered the matcha pancetta dessert. Whoa! Completely knocked on the floor with the flavors. This is my favorite restaurant having spent two weeks here and finding this one on my last night. Can't wait to come back. Don't hesitate to eat here.

Unfortunately my most recent dining experience was disappointing. I will preface this by saying I went during the summer so I know it was very busy due to tourism season. However this was my birthday dinner so I was particularly disappointed. I reserved a table for three in the whisky bar area. We arrived about five minutes early and were told by one of the hostesses that the party at the table just paid and should be leaving soon. About 20 minutes passed before another said the party still had not left even though one of them talked to the server. Eventually I agreed to have us seated in the main dining room. Almost immediately afterward I saw two parties leave the whisky bar so I asked to be moved there, which according to one of the hostesses is where we originally supposed to be. It was over 30 minutes later when we finally got the table I reserved. This left a sour taste in my mouth and I considered leaving at one point, but I was really looking forward to this dinner. For dinner I ordered the Komorebi Old Fashioned and the Dark Horse as I often do, We also shared the whisky pork buns and everything was delicious. Dessert was not as enjoyable. I ordered their espresso martini, the Electric Stolt, which was decent enough. Lacking on the coffee flavor in my opinion. I also ordered the chocolate birthday cake which, aside from the cherries in the cake, tasted like any generic cake you would get from a grocery store. Their other desserts, like the matcha panna cotta and goma silk bar, are much more flavorable. Service overall was fine, but we got the check before my boyfriend could order another drink so we felt somewhat rushed out. Considering this is the only time I've had issues with being seated for reservations, I would go back, but this was my least pleasant dining experience here, unfortunately.

Some of the best ramen and Japanese dishes that I've ever had. (I've had a lot) This is a seven star restaurant, with the exception of one thing. The food was perfect. The service was on point. They have a massive whiskey bar downstairs. They have an excellent menu of craft cocktails. They also have excellent mocktails. I will critique their bourbon selection only because they have a number of bourbons that are 18+ years old that they're trying to sell for Scottish and Japanese prices which are based on reality. Bourbon is not any good out of the barrel past 12 to 14 years. Corn is not the same as grains. The sugar is degrade and get dark after 14 years in spite of some companies selling some of their older swill, trying to get rid of it as premium. They were very nice. I gave the bartenders and recommendations of things that actually are worth that kind of money in the bourbon world. There was plenty to find that was not expensive and quite excellent. The only negative? The Host stand at the top of the stairs needs people who have more pleasant personality. How you greet people in the restaurant is absolutely imperative. It sets the tone for the whole meal. The whole experience. They seem to think that their job is to shoot people off because the restaurant is booked, but they do it in a manner that will make sure people don't come back. It's a little too New York curt. Smiling, and some good grace, would not hurt either of them. When they tell you, it's time to be seated, engaging people and making eye contact would certainly also help them look a little more human as well. Do make reservations. Otherwise, the wait time can be very long. Outstanding food! Absolutely worth passing through the gargoyles at the front door

Food is incredible had the hook and the dark horse the broth has so much flavor and the eggs were cooked perfectly. Get there early because it's always crowded. Overall awesome restaurant!

This place looks small but is actually really big bc it goes downstairs so there's two floors. All the food we got was delicious, my favorite was probably the twice fried wings, and the ramen was delicious. Even the desserts were good, though there was some freezer burn in the ice cream for the baked Alaska. Also make sure to check out the bathroom, the heated toilet seat and bidet was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. Definitely check this place out!

I came back to this place almost exactly three years later and it's still just as incredible. The service is outstanding, and the ambiance is great. The cocktails are so good - you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The scotch egg is still a standout appetizer, and the ramen and chicken mains were incredible. I'm so happy we made it back here!!

Came here for my friend's birthday with a group of people. Service was fast and kind. The ambiance is really nice, dark and intimate. It's INCREDIBLY loud though. We had to almost yell at eachother and constantly repeat ourselves. The ramen is definitely top tier and it's not too much or too little! It is pricy but I think worth it. From what I saw on the menu they only have one chicken option for ramen which was disappointing cause I don't eat pork in my ramen. I might have missed the other options though. We ordered pork buns which were more like tacos?? They were weird. The flavor was fantastic but they were dry as hell and only two come in an order which is not worth the price. The drinks were all soooo tastey, beautiful and fun! I highly recommend literally any of them! I wouldn't recommend this place for an intimate date as it's so freaking loud but I'd definitely recommend, and will be coming back, for big group events or girls night dinner or something!!

Anchorage downtown area doesn't have much offerings in terms of food. Saw this and decided to dine in. We each ordered a ramen, and I tried the Outsider which was outstanding. They have other items on the menu which we didn't get to try and some items were a bit pricey.

This place is good. Highly recommend reservations. They leave space for walk ins but when we walked in it looked like a considerable wait. Had the Dark Horse, Wagyu tartare, pickles, and the crudo. All fantastic. Extensive whisky list as well, with a ton of Japanese whiskies. Good date spot too!

From the outside it looks like a typical generic storefront in downtown Anchorage. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you walked into a trendy restaurant in NYC. Upstairs they have a bar and the main dining room is in the downstairs area. The restaurant is spacious in the dining area with the 20'+ ceiling height over the main area. TIP - Get a reservation as this place is hoppin. The space is a steakhouse and ramen place. Looking around there were plenty of of steak eaters and ramen so we dove right in. Personally I am always a sucker for tsukemen (dipping ramen) so i went straight for that. The dish was good. * Good chew on the noodles. * Egg was perfectly jammy. * I would have preferred a grilled piece of pork instead of fried pork belly. * I thought the broth could have a little more kick to it and hotter. Maybe serve it in an insulated vessel or hot stone bowl (like bi bim bop). * Never had lime before in my tsukemen so i passed on it. The portions are pretty good and overall it was a tasty dish. I would definitely come back and try more of the options. Trust me, you do not want to miss out on this place, but just be sure to book a reservation.

Stunning restaurant. Every staff member was very kind and polite. Service was flawless. Ramen was delicious. My favorite was the dark horse. We also got the hook and business lounge. Drinks were made with high quality ingredients. Would love to be able to come back and try the steak. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Great Semi-formal environment. Great for a date night, family gathering with reservations. The service was amazing very kind waiters and love that they took the time to set our table in the more romantic area for our date night. Recommended ahead of time, or for a night out for some drinks. We got the Dark Horse and Tokyo Rich tsukemen Apps we got the whiskey Buns and the takoyaki! Everything was delicious and beautifully served. Their alcoholic drinks were nice.

For me, coming here in the future my place will be at the bar with appetizers. Bar environment is 5/5 As far as the rest goes I think the food is good, not spectacular. 3/5. In the future I think I'd come for an appetizer and a couple of drinks and that's it. I felt the veal was tough on both ordered plates and potentially I would have preferred chicken. That being said the sauce was great. The grappa sauce had amazing flavor and the Marsala sauce also had great flavor. Plus the funghi appetizer was great with the bread. All of it was enjoyable enough for a return visit. This spot has very friendly staff, they move at a classic Alaska pace. Meant for sitting down and enjoying the company of someone you're eating with but not designed for getting in and out the door quickly. Mine may have showed up 20mins after my neighbor's. The quality of the food items were just ok. I had comparable sushi at another sushi restaurant a few blocks away. -Idiot Fish: The most exciting thing was the name. It was a pretty firm fish, no fat, and quite a few bones. -Sashimi Platter: 6 types, with 2 each. We got mackerel, yellowtail, tuna, salmon, white fish (snapper?), and octopus. -King Crab Roll: What I thought was the imitation crab was actually real crab. The coloring was so ...fake looking. It's not a bad roll, but I'm not sure the flavor of the crab came through. -Beef Steak Japanese Style: Big dish but awful cut of meat and had a semi off taste. Either freezer burn or the fridge. It was full of sinew and super chewy. -Herring Roe on Seaweed: This had a strange bitter aftertaste. I couldn't eat the beef after having this, it made the beef bitter too. It was a super fun texture though. Very snappy, very poppy. Only come here if you absolutely have the time for it. My dinner took about 3 hours, and there were 5 other tables.

Very nice staff and attentive and judging by all the people that waited to get in at opening, they are popular. The atmosphere was pleasant enough, clean and good lighting. Overall SOLID 4 Stars!…read more There are about half dozen Japanese restaurants in Anchorage, and after reviewing them on Yelp, we decided to visit this establishment. Ambiance 4 Stars - The restaurant is quaint and has limited seating (about dozen tables) and 6 bar seats. When you entered, the decorum feels like you have been transported to Japan and are eating at a local restaurant for the average hardworking people. I felt comfortable and relaxed. Lucky for us, we were able to be seated immediately because when it gets busy, there will be line out the door. And in 20 degree weather, that's not my cup of "matcha" tea. LOL! Service 4 Stars - I believe the restaurant is family owned and operated. Limited staff but the friendly, fast and efficient. Our server recommended several dishes which we ordered on a cold night. Only "ding" to our server was she didn't ask about our drinks. We were served water but she didn't take our drink order which was fine because of the yummy noodle broth we ordered. This place specializes in Japanese noodles, so don't expect a Hibachi show or variety of different sushi options. Their sushi option is very limited and you are not going to order teriyaki chicken with fried rice here. The star of the show are Japanese inspired noodle dishes and Katsu (deep fried Pork or Chicken). Food SOLID 4 Stars - We ordered Four dishes 1. 3 Stars - Pork Katsu - deep fried panko coated Pork with a tiny accompaniment of sliced cabbage. The Tonkatsu sauce (made of ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, mirin, Worcestershire sauce, ginger, and garlic), was liberally squeezed on the top of the dish. It was good but parts of the meat was slightly dry and the panko had a slight burnt taste to it. Possibly it was left in the fryer a little bit longer than it should. 2. 4 Stars - Kimchi Pork Tonkutso Miso Ramen Kimchi inspired w Chasu (pork belly), bean sprouts, green onions, one halved hard boiled egg, garlic flakes and ramen noodles. The ramen were al dente, had a slight chewy texture and it was a great way to soaked up the Miso broth. The miso broth was light and clear. Not as fatty or heavy as some other broths can be but had a wonderful flavor due to the other ingredients in it. This dish is loaded with Kimchi, so it might get a spicy. The Pork Katsu was a great palate cleanser to the kimchi heat. 2. 4 Stars Shoyu Ramen - same ingredients as above without the Kimchi. Also, is it chicken broth with soy sauce. The broth is light, slightly salty, and darker due to the added soy sauce. 3. 4 Stars Naruto Udon - chicken broth, shiitake mushrooms, freshly ground ginger and garlic, seaweed paper, green onions and bean sprouts. The rice based Udon noodles were thick and slippery. At times, they are hard to use with the chopsticks. The chicken broth has a wonderful Umami taste due to the earthy shiitake mushrooms. If you want more a vegetarian meal, this dish is the one. Even though they serve noodle soup dishes, don't forget to try their Japanese / Korean Curry dishes too. I will definitely be back to taste their curry dishes or appetizers like Gyoza and possibly get the Pork Katsu again just to try one more time. Also, there is a Combo Option for additional cost. I combine the Pork Katsu with the Kimchi Tonkutso for an additional $7. Check with your server or look on the menu. The prices and dish items may change later on. Enjoy!
