We had the chance to check out Whisky & Ramen during our day in Anchorage, and it was a great experience. The room has a high-energy, lively vibe without ever feeling overwhelmingly loud, and you can tell why the chef earned a James Beard nomination. You definitely need a reservation; they have a few walk-in spots, but they go very fast, so you will want to get there right when doors open if you do not have one booked. The beverage menu is very well done, with great cocktails and thoughtful mocktails that felt just as crafted. For food, our starters set a high bar; the pork buns, pickles, and octopus were all flavorful and well prepared. The ramen itself was delicious and hits the spot in the Alaska weather, with deep, tasty broths and bold flavors throughout. The Dark Horse was especially good. Wow Anchorage, what a great spot you have in Whisky and Ramen. My husband and I went on a Saturday. They state on their website they do seat equal parts walk ins and reservations so we gave it a go even though we didn't have reservations. We came a little after opening at 5:15 and were seated at a table immediately. Larger groups may have trouble without a reservation. Everything was phenomenal. My husband had a couple cocktails and I had a couple NA cocktails. I was really impressed with the NA cocktails -- they were complex in flavor and not overly sweet. Husband was also impressed with his drinks. For appetizers we got the pickles, pork buns and takoyaki. In my opinion the pork buns are the way to go. I also enjoyed the pickles and there were a good garnish with other dishes. For ramens we got the dark horse and Tokyo rich tsukemen. Wow wow wow, they were simply excellent. The broths had so much flavor. The tsukemen was a fun dish with having to assemble it yourself and dip food into the broth. Pork belly serving was very generous. Downtown Anchorage was quiet at 9pm when we arrived, but the moment you step inside, you know you're in the place to be. The room has a real buzz--alive, energetic, and filled with a diverse mix of guests. Couples on date night, commercial fishermen fresh off the boat...everyone seemed to be having a great time. The menu is exceptionally creative. If I were in town longer, I'd go back multiple times just to explore more dishes. Everything we tried was delicious, beautifully presented, and surprisingly reasonably priced. Cocktails were top‑tier--creative, balanced, and memorable. Wine by the glass was spot‑on. We ended the night with Japanese whiskey, which leads me to the best part of the entire experience: our server. As mentioned, I eat out constantly. Ninety‑nine times out of a hundred, servers are friendly but give catch‑all answers to detailed questions or default to "let me check." Jackie was the complete opposite. She knew the food, cocktail, wine, and whiskey menus as if she wrote them herself. Her recommendations were precise, thoughtful, and consistently accurate. We were unfamiliar with Japanese whiskey, so she asked a few smart questions about our preferences, then offered comparisons to American whiskey that were 100% on point. She was friendly, attentive, and perfectly calibrated--always there when we needed her, never hovering when we didn't. Jackie elevated our entire evening and made the experience genuinely world‑class. There's plenty of debate these days about tipping culture, but in this case there's no controversy at all. My favorite restaurant in Anchorage , by far. The layout of the restaurant is street level entrance with downstairs dining. The staff is just over the top amazing. Antonio greeted me at the door and sat me in just a few minutes. I was seated at the bar counter downstairs. A dark intimate hip place. The guys behind the counter were Cory, Kendrick, and another young gentleman I didn't get the name of. They were happy people and it showed. I saw from the yelpers they had Tsukemono (Japanese pickles) and my second favorite Tsukemen (dipping noodles) . I ordered both and was pleasantly surprised to see the pork belly was perfectly roasted, the 6 1/2 min egg was on point, and the noodles and broth were absolutely amazing. I am a Tsukemen fan and this place did it right. I then ordered the matcha pancetta dessert. Whoa! Completely knocked on the floor with the flavors. Unfortunately my most recent dining experience was disappointing. I will preface this by saying I went during the summer so I know it was very busy due to tourism season. However this was my birthday dinner so I was particularly disappointed. I reserved a table for three in the whisky bar area. We arrived about five minutes early and were told by one of the hostesses that the party at the table just paid and should be leaving soon. About 20 minutes passed before another said the party still had not left even though one of them talked to the server. Eventually I agreed to have us seated in the main dining room. Almost immediately afterward I saw two parties leave the whisky bar so I asked to be moved there, which according to one of the hostesses is where we originally supposed to be. It was over 30 minutes later when we finally got the table I reserved. This left a sour taste in my mouth and I considered leaving at one point, but I was really looking forward to this dinner. For dinner I ordered the Komorebi Old Fashioned and the Dark Horse as I often do, We also shared the whisky pork buns and everything was delicious. Dessert was not as enjoyable. I ordered their espresso martini, the Electric Stolt, which was decent enough. Lacking on the coffee flavor in my opinion. I also ordered the chocolate birthday cake which, aside from the cherries in the cake, tasted like any generic cake you would get from a grocery store. Their other desserts, like the matcha panna cotta and goma silk bar, are much more flavorable. Service overall was fine, but we got the check before my boyfriend could order another drink so we felt somewhat rushed out. Considering this is the only time I've had issues with being seated for reservations, I would go back, but this was my least pleasant dining experience here, unfortunately. read more

Some of the best ramen and Japanese dishes that I've ever had. (I've had a lot) This is a seven star restaurant, with the exception of one thing. The food was perfect. The service was on point. They have a massive whiskey bar downstairs. They have an excellent menu of craft cocktails. They also have excellent mocktails. I will critique their bourbon selection only because they have a number of bourbons that are 18+ years old that they're trying to sell for Scottish and Japanese prices which are based on reality. Bourbon is not any good out of the barrel past 12 to 14 years. Corn is not the same as grains. The sugar is degrade and get dark after 14 years in spite of some companies selling some of their older swill, trying to get rid of it as premium. They were very nice. I gave the bartenders and recommendations of things that actually are worth that kind of money in the bourbon world. There was plenty to find that was not expensive and quite excellent. The only negative? The Host stand at the top of the stairs needs people who have more pleasant personality. How you greet people in the restaurant is absolutely imperative. It sets the tone for the whole meal. The whole experience. They seem to think that their job is to shoot people off because the restaurant is booked, but they do it in a manner that will make sure people don't come back. It's a little too New York curt. Smiling,and some good grace, would not hurt either of them. When they tell you, it's time to be seated, engaging people and making eye contact would certainly also help them look a little more human as well. Do make reservations. Came here for my friend's birthday with a group of people. Service was fast and kind. The ambiance is really nice, dark and intimate. It's INCREDIBLY loud though. We had to almost yell at eachother and constantly repeat ourselves. The ramen is definitely top tier and it's not too much or too little! It is pricy but I think worth it. From what I saw on the menu they only have one chicken option for ramen which was disappointing cause I don't eat pork in my ramen. I might have missed the other options though. We ordered pork buns which were more like tacos?? They were weird. The flavor was fantastic but they were dry as hell and only two come in an order which is not worth the price. The drinks were all soooo tastey, beautiful and fun! I highly recommend literally any of them! From the outside it looks like a typical generic storefront in downtown Anchorage. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you walked into a trendy restaurant in NYC. TIP - Get a reservation as this place is hoppin. The space is a steakhouse and ramen place. Looking around there were plenty of of steak eaters and ramen so we dove right in. Personally I am always a sucker for tsukemen (dipping ramen) so i went straight for that. The dish was good. * Good chew on the noodles. * Egg was perfectly jammy. * I would have preferred a grilled piece of pork instead of fried pork belly. * I thought the broth could have a little more kick to it and hotter. Maybe serve it in an insulated vessel or hot stone bowl (like bi bim bop). * Never had lime before in my tsukemen so i passed on it. The portions are pretty good and overall it was a tasty dish. They also have some delicious zero-proof beverages, which is nice if you don't drink alcohol, or if you're simply not drinking alcohol at the moment, and want something a little different while on vacation. If you do drink alcohol, it also seems like a great place to enjoy some drinks. I'm happy I decided to try this place. This is our third time coming to whiskey and ramen. Unfortunately they only have one ramen that I would like, which is the Hook. The dark horse has nice flavor and if I was feeling a bit spicy, I would get that one even though I have a light tolerance for spice. Looking back at my pictures the two ramens are the same but they look different lol. My drink I got the Smoke Becomes Her. I didn't know but everyone around us also had this drink. It was very Smokey and mezcal tasting. Also pretty. All their drinks are pretty. The menu said it was refreshing g but I wouldn't call that refreshing, more spirit forward which was another option. For our app they have a new one that is Japanese sweet potato. It was two big baked sweet potato's with a special kind of butter. It was really really delicious. I would 100% get it again. New to the menu. We also got dessert because I have always been intrigued by Baked Alaska and never had it. Overall it was interesting but none of the flavors were going in my favor. We also didn't let the whiskey burn off enough but our waiter gave no instructions lol. An experience but we weren't able to finish it. One and done! I wish they had more variety of ramen. Definitely make a reservation, the wait was pretty awful even though it was a week night and pretty late. Service, like most every Alaskan restaurant I went to, was not great. In fact, I got scolded for touching the table lamp. I'm sorry, it was a bit bright and hurting my eyes. They really should have their own form of lighting at the bar. For appetizer, we got the pork buns which were full of flavor and perfect for 2. Next, the ramen. Mine was amazing and my friend said the same. The broth's flavor profile was so elevated beyond a traditional ramen broth. 5/5 recommend. Last but not least, the baked alaska. The whole experience of them lighting it on fire in front of you is fun. It was a good dessert, the ice cream was a tad bit freezer burnt but that's being very nit picky. There was a wait to get in for dinner of about 30 minutes (less than the projected 1 hour+), but it was well worth the wait. I would recommend reservations if you feasible, but they do have a waiting area. We were seated at the bar with a direct view of the cooks. It was like watching The Bear (without the intensity) while enjoying our dinner We ordered a drink and Shishito peppers to start. The peppers were quite hot and not as flavorful as some of the others I've had in the past. We ordered the buns (vegan option) to reduce the edge of the pepper dish and they were excellent. The drink, Flowers of the Edo, was tasty with a smoky flavor. I saw a few people ordered an old fashioned (with a matcha twist) and everyone who got it seemed happy with it. We will try it next time we are here. The star of the evening was the vegan Ramen bowl. It was tasty, filling and had a range of flavors from hot to creamy. I wish there were more vegetarian ramen options as I would like to try something different on my next visit. The baked Alaska comes with a whisky on fire that the server poured on the dish at our table, a nice spectacle. It is a large dessert and can easily be shared between two (or 4) people. The Matcha Pana Cotta was a good dessert to end the meal as it wasn't too overwhelmingly sweet, but provides a freshness to end the meal.
