I'm not a huge pancake person, but my husband and I really wanted to find sourdough pancakes while in Alaska. They did not disappoint. They're thin and flavorful. I was really disappointed by my experience here. From the moment we walked in, it felt like we were treated differently because we weren't regular customers. Staff repeatedly acknowledged and served people they clearly knew while we were left waiting and largely ignored. The service was slow, and we had to work much harder than we should have just to get someone's attention. It wasn't busy enough to explain the lack of service, and we never felt welcomed or valued as paying customers. Everyone deserves the same level of courtesy and attention, whether it's their first visit or their hundredth. Unfortunately, this experience made us feel like outsiders, and it left a very negative impression. We won't be returning, and I hope the restaurant takes customer service more seriously so future guests have a better experience. read more

Well. The calamari is still the best. Wine by the glass. So so. The beet salad has changed. It used to be beet and goat cheese/ almond forward. Now it's all greens with minimal beets . ( sad face ) Mezze platter. It's was ok. Not very inventive. The yogurt sauce was great. Hummus bland The pickled asparagus inedible. Yuk I won't order it again I expected a small orderve with an inventive sauce or flavor. No It's more of a deconstructed salad. It's a meal size The 5 star item. The halibut was cooked perfectly. Decent service, average food, chic fun atmosphere, but we really felt ripped off with the hidden charges and exorbitant price of the meals. We ordered several meals between 2 adults and 3 kids in addition to an appetizer and drink. They're are listed in order of favorite to least favorite: Calamari Seafood pasta Fish and chips Kids fried chicken and rice Scallop Risotto House margarita Kids dessert (house made sorbet) The server asked what soup or salad we would like within the meal, and little did we know, it would be an additional $7 up charge for each. In addition, the margarita was all ice, and tasted like your typical Jose Cuervo margarita. The calamari was good and fairly thick, enjoyed by everyone. The seafood pasta had a good flavor and loaded with seafood, truly the one meal I enjoyed. The fish and chips had 3 large portions of halibut, with a heavy fried batter, and average fries. It didn't taste better than your average fish and chips, and I'm glad I didn't personally order this dish. The kids chicken and rice had a surprisingly large amount of chicken with bland rice. The scallop risotto, just simply wasn't very good, it wasn't bland, but the flavor was lacking, and of the 3 that tried it, no one ate much. The kids dessert was called house made sorbet, and my kiddos were so excited to eat it. They tried one bite and almost cried, he said it tasted like broccoli, and I laughed and tried it myself...no kidding, this tasted like broccoli!! I eat here often when in Anchorage and consider it a go to place. Their polar bear breakfast has sourdough Blueberry pancakes, bacon and all the good stuff. Try it! There is so many good food on their menu, can't go wrong. Drinks are also completely on point! If you are a gin lover, this is your joint. My youngest sister highly recommended and has fond memories of this restaurant and coffeehouse. Highly recommend getting any entree that features an AK symbol which means the restaurant uses a product native to Alaska. Two for one which are unique to the restaurant: Polar Bear Breakfast with huge, flat pancakes and AK reindeer sausage. My sisters and uncle loved the unique pancakes. I definitely missed out because I wasn't aware of the pancakes' unique features. I opted for French Toast which was yummy, yet common. I loved the AK reindeer sausage! Mild with great texture, not gamey. Reindeer sausage is what most people refer to like it's the norm. Just tell it like it is! However, if you're concerned about a person's reaction, you're more than welcome to say venison. Halibut is also well known in this state. Vodka Battered Fish + Chips is another popular item on the menu. Restrooms included between restaurant and coffee shop next door. Does not honor their reservation times. When I arrived, I was told it would still be another 45 mins from my reservation time before we could be seated. Food was good, but they need to pick up their customer service. And managers need to find a fix to that situation. It's sad that I had to give a Low rating. It's about time for a review updated. South has grown on me over the past few years. Their breakfast is probably my favorite meal service followed by their seasonal Happy Hour. It's been like 8 years since I've been here since my last visit was so bad. This time around was just a touch better but I just can't say this is a favorite place of mine. I tried the avocado chicken melt sandwich, one of the specials for February. It was a flop, not a great medley of flavors. I mostly tasted the raw purple onion and the limp moistness of the roasted bell pepper strips. I couldn't detect any Gouda and I was also searching for the heat of the chipotle mayo that was listed on the menu description. It came with fries which were the perfect mix of crisp and tender, also perfectly seasoned. My spouse tried the halibut tacos. The batter they fry them in is bulky and unnecessary. The fish doesn't even fit correctly in the taco shell which makes it incredibly difficult to eat with your hands. Our child tried the salmon rice plate off the kids menu. The salmon was char grilled a touch over and was tough and too black in places. It did appear to be wild salmon though, which was a plus. It came with a little dish of fruit and a yummy seasonal scoop of sorbet which we all loved. Ambiance was ok. It is well lit, and was super sunny for our visit. I did notice in the sunlight that no one is dusting some of the surfaces in the restaurant. We also were sat inches away from a central table that was a hub of activity for servers grabbing ketchup, water jugs, cutlery, etc. and they would rush past brushing up against my chair. It felt confining and I was uncomfortable since I was cradling my sleeping baby in my lap at the time. Our server was very polite, but fairly impersonal and distant like they were on autopilot. Parking super easy and convenient. I might be back to check out the brunch menu, but I just can't say I've jumped on the bandwagon with this place, I'd rather eat elsewhere. read more

My friends and I enjoyed our time here, the ambiance is super nice but I should start by mentioning that we had to wait almost an hour to be seated for brunch on a Saturday so beware!!! I enjoyed my eggs Benedict with crab cakes, the sausage is reindeer sausage which had a distinct flavor but my body did not agree with so I will not be trying that again. My friends got the classic eggs Benny and pancakes, eggs, sausage. The pancake was more like a crepe, my friend did not enjoy it too much but overall it was a nice place to try. Okay, I feel the need to be fair, so I am going to lead off saying that I was hangry when I sat down, and I was battling the desperate lack of caffeine required to deal with being a fully functional adult. So take this with a grain of salt. First, you get the positive. Margot, our server, was just wonderful. She was kind and bubbly and possibly even worth the experience all by herself. She gets 5 stars for the Yelp! Review just on her own. That being said, now we move on to everything else. I learned from my beautiful and absolutely amazing wife that this restaurant is owned by the same people who own Snow City Cafe. It shows. Even with five empty tables, we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated while being expertly disregarded by the staff. No eye contact, no smiling, no light conversation, just "have a seat and we'll let you know when we're ready." And the prices. Seriously. Through the roof. I think I paid 34 bucks for fish and chips. Three pieces of battered halibut and a handful of fries. Ridiculous. I'm so sick of these pretentious restaurants that pretend that they are an elevated dining experience, but turn out to be an overhyped purveyor of bar food. Go elsewhere. Mimosa central! My friend and I had brunch and tried the Croque Madame. Very good! The pecan roll could have fed four, happily. Eclectic ambiance.....classy, kinda shabby chic and artsy. Great place to people watch between bites. Must make reservations or you will be stuck waiting for a table at the busy cafe next door (also good food there). The food was amazing. The style and vibe of the place was modern, clean yet rustic. We had the huevos d.. and the death by bacon sandwich along with sourdough pancake. One pancake was bigger than the plate and good to share. The huevos portions were big and tortillas crunchy. Lots of flavor. Death by bacon sandwich had the crunchiest bacon with a garlic aioli spread. Everything was great. If you don't want to wait go straight to the bar to start ordering and eating. Our server was super nice! The restaurant has a coffee bar and bakery as well. This place is huge! I read on another Yelp review that they have the "best coffee in the whole wide world." I was skeptical. I ordered the cold brew and it was amazing! I have to agree. I normally don't order salads but I ordered the blueberry and buratta salad with grilled chicken and I finished the whole salad. It's a great place for large groups too. I love this place. My only group is price. I understand it's nice stuff. But it seems to be having the southside tax. The southside taxes, any place that charges a little bit of a premium being on southside. It's not too bad here, but the price is definitely different than some of the other locations The food is fantastic. I have not had a bad meal here. My wife loves the boomtown pasta with fried chicken. I like anything that's on the menu honestly have not tried anything, but I didn't like. Places a little bit upscale, but you can still show up in your muck boots I'm not be turned away. They have a fantastic gin selection and that's why I like this location. I probly wouldn't get it again, was supposed to have but didn't taste any and I had to mix it to taste ok. Too much floral taste to it. For dinner since I wasn't very hungry I didn't get my usual. Instead I tried the Mac and cheese and it was very tasty! Very creamy with sharp white cheddar, penne noodles, and bacon. The bacon was very salty. Cheese was not gritty or anything. I also got a side Caesar salad. It was fine. Do t think it had parm cheese and not a lot of croutons. I think they messed up on our food because other tables seated way after us got their food fast. I think they may have accidentally given one plate to the wrong table and had to remake. However the server never relayed any info to us. We were just observant. My friend didn't like her halibut and the rice was cold that came with it. They took it off her check and she got the Mac and cheese cause she tried a bite of mine. The portion is like a little cast iron skillet about 6" maybe. Not too big but fine paired with a salad or really to share as a side. I want to try the Mediterranean platter but don't want to pay $30 for it. I've gotten the same server twice in a row and he is ok, kind of quiet and awkward but gets the job done. I have been here as least a handful of Time over the year for brunch, lunch, birthday célébration, happy hour, etc. Everything I have ordered from appetizers, drinks, entrées and desserts have been delicious and wonderfully presented. Service is always attentive and prompt. Mine favorite has been the pasta seafood, Mushroom Ajillo, clams, calamari, Pita lamb, etc. I had the macadam croquette once for brunch and that was a little too heavy for me. When we come with the kids, there is a good selection for them as well. Love the trendy decor and the seasonal menu. We seen big party here to couples just going out.
