Vodka Battered AK Fish + Chips
    Ryan Z.

Decent service, average food, chic fun atmosphere, but we really felt ripped off with the hidden charges and exorbitant price of the meals. We ordered several meals between 2 adults and 3 kids in addition to an appetizer and drink. They're are listed in order of favorite to least favorite: Calamari Seafood pasta Fish and chips Kids fried chicken and rice Scallop Risotto House margarita Kids dessert (house made sorbet) The server asked what soup or salad we would like within the meal, and little did we know, it would be an additional $7 up charge for each. In addition, the margarita was all ice, and tasted like your typical Jose Cuervo margarita. The calamari was good and fairly thick, enjoyed by everyone. The seafood pasta had a good flavor and loaded with seafood, truly the one meal I enjoyed. The fish and chips had 3 large portions of halibut, with a heavy fried batter, and average fries. It didn't taste better than your average fish and chips, and I'm glad I didn't personally order this dish. The kids chicken and rice had a surprisingly large amount of chicken with bland rice. The scallop risotto, just simply wasn't very good, it wasn't bland, but the flavor was lacking, and of the 3 that tried it, no one ate much. The kids dessert was called house made sorbet, and my kiddos were so excited to eat it. They tried one bite and almost cried, he said it tasted like broccoli, and I laughed and tried it myself...no kidding, this tasted like broccoli!! It was absolutely awful, like one of those gag jelly beans. I was expecting a high bill, but the hidden charges at the end really added to our disappointment. I regret coming here

My youngest sister highly recommended and has fond memories of this restaurant and coffeehouse. Highly recommend getting any entree that features an AK symbol which means the restaurant uses a product native to Alaska. Two for one which are unique to the restaurant: Polar Bear Breakfast with huge, flat pancakes and AK reindeer sausage. My sisters and uncle loved the unique pancakes. I definitely missed out because I wasn't aware of the pancakes' unique features. I opted for French Toast which was yummy, yet common. I loved the AK reindeer sausage! Mild with great texture, not gamey. Reindeer sausage is what most people refer to like it's the norm. Just tell it like it is! However, if you're concerned about a person's reaction, you're more than welcome to say venison. Halibut is also well known in this state. Vodka Battered Fish + Chips is another popular item on the menu. Restrooms included between restaurant and coffee shop next door. Impeccable customer service, delicious meals in natural lighting, engaging conversations with loved ones on a round table, plus family bonding. Highly recommend and worth visiting.

It's about time for a review updated. South has grown on me over the past few years. Their breakfast is probably my favorite meal service followed by their seasonal Happy Hour. I will say, I think they have the best breakfast potatoes and biscuit and gravy! Service is friendly and the ambiance is cutesy/cozy. Be sure to add yourself to the waitlist or make a reservation!

My friends and I enjoyed our time here, the ambiance is super nice but I should start by mentioning that we had to wait almost an hour to be seated for brunch on a Saturday so beware!!! I enjoyed my eggs Benedict with crab cakes, the sausage is reindeer sausage which had a distinct flavor but my body did not agree with so I will not be trying that again. My friends got the classic eggs Benny and pancakes, eggs, sausage. The pancake was more like a crepe, my friend did not enjoy it too much but overall it was a nice place to try. Our server Corey was kind and helpful with giving recommendations.

It's been like 8 years since I've been here since my last visit was so bad. This time around was just a touch better but I just can't say this is a favorite place of mine. I tried the avocado chicken melt sandwich, one of the specials for February. It was a flop, not a great medley of flavors. I mostly tasted the raw purple onion and the limp moistness of the roasted bell pepper strips. I couldn't detect any Gouda and I was also searching for the heat of the chipotle mayo that was listed on the menu description. It came with fries which were the perfect mix of crisp and tender, also perfectly seasoned. My spouse tried the halibut tacos. The batter they fry them in is bulky and unnecessary. The fish doesn't even fit correctly in the taco shell which makes it incredibly difficult to eat with your hands. Our child tried the salmon rice plate off the kids menu. The salmon was char grilled a touch over and was tough and too black in places. It did appear to be wild salmon though, which was a plus. It came with a little dish of fruit and a yummy seasonal scoop of sorbet which we all loved. Ambiance was ok. It is well lit, and was super sunny for our visit. I did notice in the sunlight that no one is dusting some of the surfaces in the restaurant. We also were sat inches away from a central table that was a hub of activity for servers grabbing ketchup, water jugs, cutlery, etc. and they would rush past brushing up against my chair. It felt confining and I was uncomfortable since I was cradling my sleeping baby in my lap at the time. Our server was very polite, but fairly impersonal and distant like they were on autopilot. Parking super easy and convenient. I might be back to check out the brunch menu, but I just can't say I've jumped on the bandwagon with this place, I'd rather eat elsewhere.

South keeps calling me back for excellent brunch, unique drinks, and fun specials that make every meal different. Whether you sit at the bar or a table, the service is excellent and the staff always gives excellent recommendations. Beautiful paintings line the walls and the open kitchen and bar floor plan give the spot great feel. The menu clearly marks how drinks can be made N/A and meals can be vegan/vegetarian/or gluten free making the food accessible to all!

Seafood Pasta. 2 scallops and 2 pieces of shrimp for $38.

Service was great. Drink wonderful. Food . I reared the seafood pasta. 2 shrimp and two scallops! $38. I cut up the scallops and the shrimp just to feel like I was actually eating a shrimp pasta. And it was very bland. There was not a lot of flavor at all, but I was very disappointed in the amount of seafood. This is the second time I've had not good food in the last few times I've been here for the price

Mimosa central! My friend and I had brunch and tried the Croque Madame. Very good! The pecan roll could have fed four, happily. Eclectic ambiance.....classy, kinda shabby chic and artsy. Great place to people watch between bites. Must make reservations or you will be stuck waiting for a table at the busy cafe next door (also good food there). All the same, South is not a last-minute decision on where to eat.

Our server was super nice! The restaurant has a coffee bar and bakery as well. This place is huge! I read on another Yelp review that they have the "best coffee in the whole wide world." I was skeptical. I ordered the cold brew and it was amazing! I have to agree. I normally don't order salads but I ordered the blueberry and buratta salad with grilled chicken and I finished the whole salad. It's a great place for large groups too. We had a party of 9 people and sat comfortably.

I had a wonderful experience here. The atmosphere was great - loved the look of the place. The server at the bar was professional and had a great vibe. Most importantly, my sandwich was DELICIOUS. I felt fueled for my day of hiking after eating here!

I usually wouldn't eat Mexican food in Alaska those two don't really go together in my brain being from California but I wanted to give it a try anyway lol I ordered the Cilantro Shrimp Molcajete and some chips and salsa on the side. First I will say I don't see why certain restaurants charge for chips and salsa it should be free in my opinion. The salsa lacked flavor and was more sweet than anything. (I asked for the spiciest salsa they have) and the order was $8.. I get it for the size I was surprised but that salsa wasn't good. Moving on to the main dish tho we have the Molcajete which was really good in my opinion. It came out SIZZLING! and the size of it wasn't what I was expecting. So if you're hungry I would def get one of those entrees ! The flavor of the fajita mix was good and the amount of shrimp you get was super filling. That dish was about $38 with the shrimp. The bartender was nice and asked me if I was doing okay a few times and also made sure my water was filled which was great he seemed really knowledgeable of all the good food recommendations and was pretty quick with service so employees were cool ! All in all I enjoyed my early dinner in a nice place that played good Latin music and I liked that it's walking distance from my hotel. I would eat here again one day and try some of their tacos next because I hear they are pretty good. I would say they need to just make the chips free because the are NOT worth $8 lol like at all but other then that decent place.

We enjoyed the halibut with bok choy and crispy potatoes. The chicken tortilla soup had the most delicious broth. Al pastor tacos and fish tacos were super tasty. The shrimp moqueca was beautifully presented in a hot pot with fresh avocado salsa. Each sauce was complex and delicious. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a gem of Latin cuisine in Anchorage. If I lived here, I would visit often.

If dining is meant to be an experience, then tonight was certainly one. Not the kind you rave…read moreabout, more the kind you unpack over a stiff drink later, wondering what exactly went wrong. I made a late reservation at Southside Bistro, hopeful for a good evening. We arrived 30 minutes early, aiming to grab a drink at the bar. No dice. It was full. The owner suggested we grab a glass of wine while we waited, which would have been lovely had there been anywhere remotely comfortable to do so. So instead, we went next door to the liquor store and made the best of the situation (hello, bitters, Luxardo's and bourbon for later). When we returned, we were greeted with a blank stare. The host had no memory of us, which was... fine. Mistakes happen. We were seated shortly after. Let's talk ambiance. If "cold minimalism meets cafeteria intimacy" is your thing, you'll feel right at home. Shared bench seating put us close enough to hear the life stories of both adjacent tables. Romantic, if you're into that sort of thing. Now, service. Hats off to our server, Gina. Professional, kind, and the MVP of the night. She did her best to carry the weight of what unfolded next. We ordered two apps: blue cheese custard and clams. The custard was lovely, rich, garlicky, and creamy with a well-made flatbread. Alaska's produce limitations made the wilted greens forgivable. The clams, however, were a different story -- overcooked, gritty, and floating in what I can only assume was salted dishwater. Olive oil? Not even a whisper. Then came the entrées. A filet mignon and a rigatoni. Both arrived lukewarm, but hey, they looked fine. The filet was topped with a slice of cold butter thicker than the steak itself (which is bold, honestly), and the mashed potatoes had already developed that signature "left in the window too long" skin. Veggies? Straight from a freezer bag into a steamer. Nostalgic. The filet was, sadly, inedible. Cold, dry, rubbery. Probably sous-vide then left to die. Meanwhile, the pasta was undercooked and bland. I've had more developed flavor profiles from boxed mac and cheese. Now, I've been in the industry over 20 years. I don't send food back. I don't like making a fuss. But tonight, I politely asked to remove the filet from the bill. One bite in -- that's all it took. Our gracious server obliged. Then the owner returned, and that's when the real magic happened. He approached us not with curiosity or concern, but with a smug lecture. Apparently, because I said the dish "looked fine" when it hit the table, I had forfeited the right to express concern about the temperature or quality. He assured me that everyone else was enjoying their meals, as if that somehow invalidated my experience. Irony: the table next to us had just sent back their lamb for the exact same issue, undercooked and returned twice. It's rare that I feel compelled to walk away from a restaurant, let alone leave a review. But the arrogance displayed tonight was just... disheartening. Anchorage deserves better. The industry deserves better. In the end, I paid the 200 dollar bill for a half bottle of wine and two apps, tipped 20 percent (Gina earned every cent), and left with a story. Not the one I hoped to write, but one worth sharing. Jens, if you are going to wear a white chefs coat in the dining room all night, maybe have an idea of how to act like a FOH manager if you aren't willing to dress like one. Never again.
