Wow, what a pleasant surprise! The interior and the general art direction of this place have a distinctly modern, hip vibe. Something you'd never suspect from a place in a humble Anchorage strip mall, reminds me more of an Asian fusion restaurant in Portland's Pearl District. It seems like most places in Anchorage that contain "Pho" in their title, are often Thai restaurants in disguise (not that there is anything wrong with that, Pho Jula is probably my favorite "Thai" restaurant in town!). Note here; everything is distinctly Vietnamese. Their menu is just the way I like it: short, sweet, and specialized. Too many places nowadays try to "everything to everyone" and end up being "nothing to no one". Again, not here. You'll find Pho and a handful of other Vietnamese staples, as well as some appetizers. It's laid out in a simple format resembling more of a sub shop or a Chipotle rather than a typical Asian restaurant menu with hundreds of combinations. (this is not the type of menu where you say "I'll have the #127") I got the beef bowl. As other reviewers have pointed out, the broth here is much more richly-spiced than at other Pho places. Personally, I'm into this. I barely had to use the additional pho accoutrements! The chunks of beef were large, plentiful, hearty, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious! It has had broccoli in it. That may not be "traditional" for pho, but I thought it paired with the beefy flavors wonderfully. And the medium size bowl was only 10 bucks! 10 bucks for non-fast food is a steal in Anchorage. Some other things I noticed: Cool little bar area with an EXCELLENT beer (?!) selection. Seriously, you won't find many dedicated BARS in Anchorage with taps this good, and in a Pho shop, it's practically unheard of! I counted well over a dozen taps, and not mainstream swill either, PHO-KING good craft brews. (for those of you that thought you were going to make it through this review without any Pho-puns, you are naïve and too-trusting!) Memorabilia on the walls from some sort of MEGA PHO EATING CHALLENGE they do here. I love how they only serve Vietnamese food here! This is probably the only Asian restaurant in town who specializes in just one ethnic food group--unlike others! It really bothers me when a pho restaurant serves fried rice or when a sushi restaurant has thai curry on their menu. This makes Phonatik unique and their food is very authentic. Their pho broth is very tasty. You can literally just eat the pho without adding any condiments! And they don't skimp you on the meat or noodles. There's plenty of both in the bowl. I really used to like this place, I think I would still like this place. But for some reason their credit card machine has been "out of order" for months now. It's been at least 6 months that their machine was broken. And since I don't normally carry cash on me, I haven't been back to this place. Otherwise, I really like their pho soups. More authentic than most places around Anchorage. Their noodles are usually cooked al dente (just the way I like it) therefore, when it get soaked in the hot soup it turns out just right. And I usually asked for their rare steak on the side, so it doesn't dry out the meat. I've noticed that their veggies are much fresher than most Vietnamese places around. The broth is the best part of their soups. I don't know how they make their soups, but it taste pretty traditional in the sense that it's made over a few days. I like the fact that they don't crowd their menus with other types of food. They really focus on their pho and they get it right! And their staff is usually pretty friendly. PHOnatik quickly became a staple in our restaurant list. We've been here about 6 times in the 3 months we've lived here and haven't had a bad experience. The pho is really good and you have the option to build your own bowl with the #7. Don't stop at the pho. There are plenty of other dishes to try. Beef stew, ribeye stir fry, hungry man, and banh mi are all great option. Another good couples option is a large pho your way with brisket and flank with the ox tail on the side (they'll put it in a small bowl of broth). And if you need to have a little more food for the two of you get a banh mi (try dunking it in the broth). (8th or so visit) First time we've been here for dinner. we arrived at 5:30 pm on a Saturday - the front desk asked us to seat ourselves - the bus person gave us water and after about ten minutes I walked up to the front desk and asked if we could have a server - ten minutes later I walked over again and asked if we could have a server - after another ten min - thirty mins total a young man came over and took the order of two women who had just sat down - we flagged down another server and he took out order - though he said his shift had ended. We ordered a spring roll and one pho and one rice bowl - after about twenty five mins of being completely ignored with no food we just left - no one said a word to us. It's all about the broth! Phonatik is by far the best Pho restaurant in anchorage. We ordered the pork fried egg rolls cooked to a golden brown perfection. However, the fish sauce was too fishy and I opted for the siracha sauce that was on the table instead. The combination Pho was packed with strips of beef with generous portion of other meats. The meatballs were tender and the tripes (I think) were properly cleaned and prepared. Again, the broth was well seasoned not too salty like other Pho places in the area. The garnish were fresh and just enough for two bowls. I do have to say that the restaurant's name "Phonatik" kinda project an Americanized pho, but you would be surprised. I just got take out here for the first time today. The portions were plenty (bbq pork vermicelli), the egg roll appetizer is super delicious and perfectly crispy with good flavor in the wrap and the stuffing. Overall delicious but most of all incredible service. These guys were extremely kind and generous. They threw in some pastries from their bakery next door!!! Most pho restaurants have more of a one-size-fits-all traditional look (the interior of most pho restaurants are clones of one another), but this restaurant is very well designed. I had a good feeling about this place as soon as I walked in. As for the food, the reindeer wontons are absolutely amazing. The reindeer meat really adds a unique kick to the wonton. I have never had anything like it. Unfortunately, I do have to mention that the pho is about average in terms of flavor. Nothing too special here. They are a bit frugal with their noodles and toppings and the beef broth is not anything special (I am a fan of their chicken broth, however). I will be returning soon! read more

We're frequent customers and they seat you quickly but it takes a while for your server to come by to take your order and it takes a LONG time to get your food. Ordered ONE fried egg roll and it took around 15 mins to get to our table. Took 10 mins from then to get our soup. It also took a while to pay when we were done because they only have one iPad/register and there were other servers trying to cash their customers out and had a line of people trying to pay for their to go orders... maybe invest in a additional iPad/register? I went into Phonatik today for lunch around 1pm with my sister, and we got the grilled pork spring rolls, meatball beef pho, and a soda. Our tab was $21.40, and I gave our server a $100 bill, so I could break that bill. He said he gave me $79 back, and I didn't realize until after leaving this establishment that he only gave me $74 back not $79. He shorted me $5, and I tipped $6, which is 25+%. My mistake for not counting back my cash, but I wanted to leave ASAP since I was there for a while now, and I shouldn't have had to re-count my cash, but now I've learned my lesson. The food is always good, but prepared to wait quite a while for your food no matter what time you go even before or after the rush. I'm not sure if they need more help in the kitchen, but it takes awhile. Also, DO NOT EAT THE GARNISHES. I have had friends work here in the past, and they have all confirmed that they re-use the garnishes that previous guests have not eaten. That is disgusting. If you're going to eat here, then pay with a card, so you don't get shorted and get charged the right amount. read more

Unlike other naggy waiters who like to ask every two minutes if we need something, or ask after our first bite if our food is good. Ain't no one got time to be bothered like that. Started off the new year by trying something new, their full size CaliPHOnia rolls without avocado. Let me tell you, every bite was pretty perfect, I nearly did not want to share. Dipped in Hoisin sauce, another new try of the year, it was something I will be going back for. I then ordered their Meatball Pho. Does anyone else understand my frustration with places that have a meatball pho that contains like three meatballs and then some other random slices of meat. Anyone else? Fine, maybe it is just me. But I'm thankful that there is finally a place that appreciates and highlights meatballs in their pho! Cost wise was key. Their 3 full size CaliPHOnia rolls (split in half-zies) seemed a bit pricey. Every time I've gone here it was terrible service. First time I tried to get seated and they said it would be an hour, so I went somewhere else. Second time I ordered food for pick up. The pho was subpar to pho Vietnam where I usually go but I had heard great things. The meat was dry and the broth was just ok. Third time I ordered to go and they said it would be an hour. I get there and they said it would be another hour and that they were busy. Its pho where they don't even cook the meat on the broth. I don't get it. Last time I dined in. Waited for 20 minutes without any one coming over to take my order and so I left. It was 1pm on like a Tuesday. Not a weekend or something. It didn't appear that busy. I love calamari however I'm not a big fan of calamari in Alaska. Only because I enjoy the whole pieces meaning the ones with the legs. I can't seem to find it here in Alaska.
