We have worked with PhotonWorks Engineering three times in the past 6 years. Our first experience was when we put solar panels on the townhome we lived in. From start to finish, this company was reliable and responsive. Back in 2016, we were not sure if we wanted to jump into having battery backup, especially since there were additional hoops to jump through having to deal with our strict HOA. We had 8 panels put up and with the federal and state tax credits, the price of the system was very reasonable and cut our electric bill by about 2/3. We ended up selling our townhouse during the start of Covid-19, and reached out to PhotonWorks last year to add solar panels to our newly purchased single family home. We got a Tesla backup battery installed and for the past 7-8 months or so our electric bill has basically been the connection fee to HECO ($26.25). We run the A/C nightly and even more often when it gets hot in the afternoons during the summer months. Our third experience with PhotonWorks was getting a Level 2 electric vehicle charger installed for my husband's plug in hybrid. I needed to add more panels, maybe battery, EV charging station, and another outlet for a hot tub. There's a ton of PV installers in the state, some local and some mainland chains. I chose this company for my PV install and other electrical needs because they were honest. Choose a company as if you were going to invest in them financially. My advice is to pick at least two companies and then tell them what you expect to pay on your electrical bill based on your current and future electrical usage. You can tell who is honest when you get different configurations from multiple companies along with their explanations. I wasn't looking at the cost primarily but more so on the configurations they provided. I provided Tom with my expectations and he delivered exactly what I needed (not wanted) for my home. read more

PhotonWorks Engineering (PWE) installed an additional set of 18 Solar PV panels on my roof in March, 2023. No one informed me that the system was "commissioned and activated" on March 15. From March 15 to August 10, 2023, PWE technicians repeatedly came to check on the system. Each time, I was informed that the PV Inverter breaker was tripped, it was reset, and I was told that the system was now operating. But my electric bills did not reflect the expected decrease during that time period, so I contacted the salesman who sold the contract to me. I learned on August 25 from him that "Once the system has been commissioned, our operations team does not proactively monitor the system on your behalf." This was unexpected since PWE technicians did make service visits, so they were able to see that the system was not performing yet failed to resolve the problem until August 10. The breaker wires were set incorrectly, which could have been easily corrected four months earlier. No one told me that I, the homeowner, was responsible for downloading the Telsa and Solar Edge apps to monitor the system and report any problems to PWE. Instructions for both apps are online, and I am still struggling to understand them. No one offered to help me understand the app reports. Even if I was tutored to review the Telsa or Solar Edge apps, I would not have seen anything since they were both not functioning because of the continued tripping of the breaker. The period from March 15 to August 10 has 148 days. After going through all the reports for those days, it was apparent that the system was down on the fifth day, March 19, and operational for only 11 days at minimal production. There were 137 days of lost production. I asked to meet in person with the owner of PWE and the salesman to resolve this matter. When they refused to meet with me, I requested $1300 in compensation to cover the electric bills. PhotonWorks Engineering failed to take any responsibility for not being able to resolve the breaker issue in a timely fashion, denied the requested compensation for my electric bills, and refused to meet with me. PhotonWorks Engineering needs to better train their staff, provide appropriate compensation when they are at fault, and improve their customer service. read more

We have PV, but really wanted to add a Tesla wall to our home for back up battery storage. We went through Revolusun back in 2013 and when we reached out to them for the tesla wall, they dragged their feet and took MONTHS to reply to our request. Only when we said we were going with someone else did they FINALLY reply - Just terrible. Our friend told us about PhotonWorks and referred Tom. Tom answered within the first few rings and was very knowledgeable and had the answers to everything that we needed. He had a quote ready the same day and was able to schedule a face-to-face meeting the next day! Unfortunately, our PV system is leased from SunRun through Revolusun so we could not go through with the transaction. Even though this was true, Tom took the time to go through our lease with SunRun and explain what we had actually signed up for back in 2013. We had no idea!! I wish we could go back in time and not gone through Revolusun, but alas -- we cannot. Hopefully when our lease is up, Tom is still with Photonworks so we can go through them instead! We have used Photonworks twice - to install our original PV system about 10 years ago, and just recently to add more panels and the Tesla powerwall. After having multiple people come out and give quotes we choose to go with Photonworks. Tom Halmos was our guide and he was truly amazing. They were not the cheapest but easily the best to work with, they helped us through the whole system and even let me change plans and make additions half way through without any complaints. The system has been up and running now for over 2 years and has been spectacular. Having been a customer of Haleakala Solar for 10 years--we ran into serious problems with their maintenance program and it required that we look for a new company. A friend who is an expert in PV/solar recommended Photonworks. Photonworks repaired some invertors very quickly last year. I then had Photonworks install a couple of Tesla batteries and additional supporting panels. Their install team are a great bunch. They are highly professional at diagnosing issues, creating workarounds to problems that present themselves when adding onto an existing system. Tom Halmos knows his trade well. I had additional issues as my roof has concrete tiles--tend to break when anyone walks on them. Tom made sure that the tiles were replaced to spec and even called in a roofing contractor. Tom answers any question promptly and fixes all problems. Working with Photonworks was a great experience. All I knew about PV systems was that I wanted/needed one + battery back ups when we rebuilt our home. I had spoken to other companies and was so dissatisfied with my experiences. My first conversation with Mr. Paul Orem was unlike any I had experienced with the other pv companies - as I thought I was speaking to a marketing/sales person, I didn't quite know what to make of our first conversation as nothing felt like a sales or marketing pitch - just straight forward information. I had no idea I was speaking to the CEO - he was patient (especially with such a PV ignorant potential client such as me), kind, forthcoming, and very comprehensive in his explanations. I appreciated his always responding in a very timely manner to my phone calls and emails. The entire process has been quite seamless and effortless. Each member of Photonworks that I have encountered/worked with has been courteous, kind, responsive, professional and very customer service oriented - from Mr. Orem, CEO, to Keelan who was incredibly efficient, kind and helpful with the complicated process of communication/documentation with HECO (could not have nor wanted to do that on my own), to Steve Frieberger who was assigned to supervise our project (the best - another incredibly patient gent!) to each of the installers (initial install and upgrade as well) - no complaints, only praise and gratitude for each and all of them. After making the decision to install PVs, we began studying reviews of various companies as well as investigating complaints on the Better Business Bureau site. We settled on interviewing the top three and we selected PhotonWorks Engineering. Prices were all about the same but Tom Halmos was impressive. He came to the interview on time and well prepared with materials to help us understand the complexities of the installing photovoltaic. He was professional and truly patient with our questions (not to mention he engaged with our obnoxious pup). Our meeting with Tom was on 9/1/21 and yesterday (11/19/21) the system was fully working and Luke did his magic and and taught us to go online to monitor it. Did we make the right choice to go with PhotonWorks? A resounding "YES". Reasons: 1. Tom, Luke, and all the installers were professional and efficient, doing their job and cleaning up when done. 2. Along the way, Tom kept us informed via phone calls and emails and truly "under promised and over delivered". 3. Because we preferred having the battery installed in the garage, the Tesla battery works well as it is slim and rests on the concrete floor. 4. I was also very pleased that foot traffic on the roof caused some shingles to be damaged, but your guys replaced them without me asking. At the end of each day, there was no evidence that your techs were working around and on my home. I had 26 mono-PV panels installed on my home in Ewa in 2013 and zero issues since. - Great price (best off all estimates by FAR, noting I did a lot of research and got 7-8 quotes before purchasing). - Best service, no issues with HECO and net metering and only had to wait about 3 weeks on the install once they accepted the job. - Best equipment. Best/new state of the art and most reliable equipment (stayed away from the unreliable Enphase inverters and went with power optimizers and central inverters... hence the "no issues" with the system) . - Quality installation (people who clean my panels every year even commented on the high quality of the install). Photon works installed 37 Panasonic HIT panels on my home. I couldn't be happier with the decision. I received quotes from 4 other companies and Photon Works was the least expensive. I chose photon works, however, because of they were one of two companies to offer a different approach to my panels, even though it was probably a more difficult installation. This allowed for a much more aesthetically pleasing configuration. My house also has an odd roof that caused unforeseen increased installation costs for photon works. They did not pass this cost on to me! Everything with them was professional right from the start. I never felt any pressure from them and was always talking to someone with technical expertise and not a salesperson. The other companies obviously had higher prices to spend on advertising and sales. If you like fancy sales brochures, then go with another company. If you like superior work, straightforward staff, and lower prices then go with photon works. read more

We researched and interviewed several solar companies after deciding to apply for the Battery Bonus program in which Hawaiian Electric helps with the purchase of a solar battery in return for taking power from our solar panels for two hours each night during peak energy usage. We liked the idea of getting the battery and also helping Hawaiian Electric provide clean energy to the rest of the island. We also decided to add 16 solar panels to our existing panels. Other than the two hours at night, any extra power we make goes to Hawaiian Electric as a credit, so our electric bill is almost nothing! Tom from Photonworks was the most knowledgeable of everyone we spoke to and answered all of our questions completely. Some of the other company representatives actually gave us false information. The prices were comparable and they had the best service warranty, so it was a no brainer to go with Photonworks. There was a lot of paperwork involved to apply for the permit and lots of hoops to jump through, but the people at Photonworks took care of all of that. We had one visit to discuss where the battery and panels would be located, and then we just sat back and waited until we were called to schedule the installation. The men who came out were very friendly and professional. It took two days, and we hardly knew they were there. At the end, we were shown how to install the app that monitors the workings of the battery and panels. It is really cool and shows how much energy is going to the battery, the house, or Hawaiian Electric. We check it several times a day, and it is very interesting to see how much power is used when different appliances are turned on. Wow, the dryer and oven use a lot! Tom called after a few days to make sure we were happy with how things went, and he said they were monitoring our system and noticed one of the panels was underperforming. They had already ordered a new one under the warranty, and would call when it came in to arrange when to come out to install it. Now that it service! If anyone is looking to add PV system to their home or business, I highly recommend Photonworks Engineering. They are all very professional and do a great job. I worked with Tom, who spent a lot of time with us discussing what we can do. He never pressured me into anything, actually, he saved me some money on things we did not need. Tom is a very honest person and will not sell you something that will not work for you and your family. He also checked in with us every step of the way. Our project was a little more difficult due to the fact that we had open permits from previous PV companies who either did not apply for permits or did not close out permits. Marrisa, Project assistance, spent a lot of time with the building department and HECO trying to make our old system legal (note: Our old system was done by Mercury Solar, who everyone should never ever use). The whole crew at Photonworks was all very nice, very clean and very neat. They really know what they are doing. Photonworks had to have all of our old battery system (that Mercury solar installed in 2016, which never worked and they did not warranty) removed and disposed and put in the Tesla Powerwall 2. Everything works great and I can see how my system is working. Please call Tom and just talk to him and you will not regret it. We were beyond impressed and happy with the service, installation, quality and price. We consulted Greenpath and Revulsun. Greenpath was really cheap but not as knowledgeable and didn't have the high return panels we were looking for. Revulsun was super expensive but you don't get a better panel. We did extensive research on our own as well. Photonworks are not in the business of marketing. They didn't try and upsell. Their costs were low but we will still got high output panels. They did a flawless installation. Panels are very close together no extra spacing or wiring showing. They installed it quickly and all the staff were very professional. They also came out on other occasions to make sure that our energy output was up to standards and routed the system to save us from installing extra stuff which would have made them more money, they have a lot of integrity. On top of all that they were so much cheaper and gave us very nice panels. Would use them without question. read more
