My first time here with my friend and meeting with my other friend and her friend. Ordered the catfish and it was huge but very tasty . The service was great and atmosphere inviting . Will definitely come again
Back in the days, Phương Trang was THE Vietnamese restaurant everyone went to. They're the last of the original Vietnamese restaurants in this area, as all of the others have long folded. I've been here countless times over the last 4 decades. While it's still good, the quality went south after the husband passed away a few years back. The wife and her kids are doing their best to keep the place afloat, but business has been slower with all the competing Asian restaurants in the Convoy district. What we normally like from here are the fish sauce wings and the buttered wings. The 7-course beef is also good here. The baked catfish is also really good. My mom was friends with the owner's wife so we came here often when my mom was alive. We still come every once in a while with my dad to support their business. Family owned and run. It's not fancy, but it does have some of the traditional Vietnamese dishes that you wouldn't find at any of the pho restaurants.
I just got the regular rare steak pho. This is by far the best pho I have ever had in my entire life I genuinely cried. I teared up and cried when I had the first sip of broth. It was like an explosion of flavor in my mouth. I loved it. It is a perfect atmosphere clean not too fancy not too casual. They're very kind had a seated very quickly no waiting I loved it. I have no notice this is the best pho I have ever had in my life I love them
Came in at 3 on a Sunday with a table for 2 and got seated right away. Server took care of us and food came out quick. It's usually busier by peak hours but the place is big so if there's a wait, it won't be long. We got the banh xeo, vermicelli with egg rolls and grilled pork and the garlic butter wings. All of the food was great, no complaints. Good place to go to if you want Vietnamese food. Definitely coming here again to try other things on the menu.
Best Vietnamese restaurant in San Diego! We moved to Temecula, but whenever we go to San Diego, we usually pick one of our 3 best spots and this is one of them....The other 2 favorites are Point Loma Seafood, Ichiban Sushi, and OB noodle house (mainly for atmosphere). Anyway, back to Phuong Trang...If you like vietnamese and haven't tried Phuong Trang, you are really missing out. Give it a shot and try their oven roasted catfish and their garlic wings are the best, and they have many other dishes worthy of praise. Prices are very reasonable especially for the quality of food, and staff is friendly.

They have an extensive menu and there were so many options that it took me a while to choose. We got spring rolls as an appetizer for the table which was yummy and fresh. I decided to try a new dish, which was the Fried Egg Rolls And Char - Grilled Pork Vermicelli Noodles. The egg rolls and pork were cooked well and had such a nice flavor. The vermicelli noodles, vegetables, and fish sauce all tasted fresh. The whole dish was so refreshing. I will be ordering this dish more at Vietnamese restaurants if it's available on the menu.
Went to Phuong Trang for my birthday. I was going to try to make it to my favorite pho place but my friend wanted to take me to their favorite pho place, which is Phuong Trang. We got there around 12p on a Thursday. They had some customers for the lunch rush but it wasn't overwhelmingly busy. The menu was extensive. Apparently their egg rolls are fire, my friend wanted some but I'm trying to lay off the fried foods. I got the small combo pho and they got the rare steak with brisket. I didn't get a picture of mine but I got a picture of theirs. Mine was delicious. I always add siracha to mine and they had a ton of little packs. My friend also had a drink, a sofa chanh and it was good. I didn't get anything to drink cause I had my birthday coffee. It was a nice vibe in there.
This place had really good food but I'd say most of it was really good and some of it was okay. Our whole table really enjoyed the chicken wings and I liked my bowl of bun rieu. If you go, I'd definitely order the chicken wings. My parents thought their dishes (the banh xeo and bun) were decent. Service was good though and the restaurant is clean, cute, and well kept. Seems like it could be a really good place for events.
This Vietnamese restaurant in Convoy is a delicious & nostalgic spot for me & my family. There is plenty of seating inside, suitable for large parties. I would recommend calling ahead to make a reservation if you would like to order the fried catfish, so once you arrive, it is ready. * Cá Nướng Da Dòn (Oven Roasted Catfish) - 9.6/10 (the skin is very crisp & seasoned well. the fish itself is very juicy & soft. it comes with rice paper & plenty of fresh vegetables for you to wrap yourself into a delicious spring roll. the peanuts & fried onions adds a nice crunch & makes the catfish so addicting to eat. this is a great dish to share with a party of four. i will come back here just to get this!) * Bò Cuốn Lá Lốp (Ground Beef Wrapped in Grape Leaves) - 8.4/10 (the beef is grilled well with a nice char. the aroma from the grape seeps into the juicy beef adding a bit of tanginess to it. i do wish the pieces were slightly thicker & seasoned a bit stronger. nonetheless, this beef is flavorful & very delicious when wrapped in a spring roll) * Cánh Gà Nước Mắm (Glazed Fish Sauce Chicken Wings) - 7.8/10 (i like how the pieces of chicken were quite big & very juicy. the sauce itself is a bit sweet for me as i like my fish sauce wings more tangy with a kick. these wings had more of a sweet, orange flavor to them. i also wish the wings were crispier, but i appreciate how they came out piping hot)
This spot is a go-to if you're craving banh xeo among other delicious Vietnamese offerings. There are so many different options on the menu so it's hard to choose what to get. I recommend coming with a big group and ordering family-style so you can try a bit of everything, unless you wanted an individual bowl of pho. We ordered the veggie banh xeo, vermicelli char grilled chicken bowl, stir fry crispy egg noodles with xa xiu, along with a few bowls of pho. The veggie banh xeo is so good. It does take awhile to cook, so I usually order the banh xeo upon sitting down. I split the vermicelli and stir fry noodles with one other person, and it was the perfect amount of food for us two. I really enjoyed both of these two dishes. Everyone at the table who ordered pho enjoyed it. Even though we were a big party (about 12 people), the service was good and very timely. The restaurant has a lot of seating too.
Food: authentic, fresh ingredients (no bruising on the basil or cilantro) Service: quick, attentive. Parking: huge lot with other stores. The MNGO shop next door draws in a crowd so some of the parking fills up. Went at 5pm on a Friday, plenty of parking to choose from, but QUICKLY filled after that.
Haven't been here in a few years. Everything was delicious always but I wanted highlight the Bun Rieu (tomato and crab soup with tofu noodle). It tastes so much better than I remembered. The tofu tastes fresher in quality, a good medium-firmness, lightly fried. (I think the tofu used to be fried more.. to the point where it's got a slightly thicker crust, and the inside is more like a firm?) The rieu is more generous, more chunky. Lots of tomato goodness. The bun was also good. This is definitely the viet version of "chicken soup for the teenage soul", hearty, homey, comforting. May be it's all in my head, but I enjoyed it very much. Easy and free parking, plenty of seats, plenty of options!
We had the fried spring rolls, vietnamese crepe, chicken and beef summer rolls and all were delish!!! The meat was juicy and tender and the veggies were fresh. A friend told me to eat the spring rolls, you wrap it with lettuce with all the other veggies (cilantro, basil and some fish sauce) and wow that really elevated the taste of spring rolls. You get both crunchiness of the fried spring rolls and the fresh flavors of the veggies. If you've never had it that way, I highly recommend it! They have some bottled beers, among them Sapporo and Tsing Tao.
Phuong Trang has been a San Diego staple for decades. It first started in Linda Vista in 1988, serving traditional Vietnamese family-style meals before moving to its current home on Convoy in 1992. Today, it's one of the most well-known Vietnamese restaurants in the city, and after this visit, I can definitely see why. One of my favorite things about coming here is the location. Even though it's right in Convoy, parking has never been an issue for me. I usually avoid the area because finding a spot can be a headache, but Phuong Trang has a large parking lot that makes stopping by so much easier. I came in for a quick takeout lunch. One thing to know before you go is they don't accept Apple Pay, so make sure to bring a physical card or cash. The staff was incredibly welcoming. They greeted me when I walked in, gave me plenty of time to look over the menu, and never made me feel rushed. That kind of hospitality really stood out. I ordered the Char-Grilled Beef Vermicelli and the Shrimp, Pork & Jellyfish Salad. The salad comes with shredded green papaya, celery, cucumber, carrots, shrimp, pork, jellyfish strips, fresh mint, crushed peanuts, and shrimp chips.The salad was refreshing with plenty of shrimp and jellyfish throughout. I especially liked the crunch from the green papaya. My only complaint was that the dressing felt a little one dimensional. I wish it had a little more brightness to bring out the fresh herbs and vegetables. It was still enjoyable, though. The Char-Grilled Beef Vermicelli was my favorite of the two. It came with vermicelli noodles, fresh herbs, pickled daikon and carrots, crushed peanuts, plus five grilled beef rolls wrapped around scallions. The beef had a delicious smoky flavor from the grill. The only downside was that the inside of the rolls was a little chewy since it didn't get the same char as the outside. Even so, every bite was packed with flavor, so it wasn't enough to take away from the dish. Between the friendly service, quick turnaround for takeout, and solid food, I can see why Phuong Trang has stayed so popular for all these years. I'd happily come back and keep working my way through their menu. read more
Phuong Trang is still a Vietnamese staple on Convoy. It used to be THE place for pho but now there is alot more competition. I came for lunch with my family on Friday at 1pm. Tons of parking, no wait and restaurant was only hlaf filled. Promptly seated and waiters are still aggressive about getting your order and then forgetting about you until you ready to leave. Food wasn't quite as good as I remember. We had fresh spring rolls, beef stir fry noodle dish, large pho, egg roll and grilled pork bun and wonton noodle soup. Main entrees were all about $17 and decent portion. I like Chinese style wonton noodles and beef stir fry noodles better--I feel Vietnamese style can be a bit sweet. read more
Phuong Trang was a nice place for dinner. Spacious interior and great for large parties. Service was fine and there were lots of workers cleaning tables. The food was fine. I ordered the shrimp and Pork Wonton Soup with Egg Noodles. Egg noodles were good. I am use to the wonton filling with chopped shrimp and pork but these were like a paste. I enjoyed the fried shallots. Chicken vermicelli bun was tasty. Fresh shrimp spring rolls were fresh and light. Rice paper was wrapped well. The garlic wings were not what I thought and tasted a little sweet. They were fried well. read more

The pho is really good there and tastes amazing. When you order your food, the workers give it to you in no time. The inside has pictures of Vietnam and a gold thing of Buddha. This is a really good pho place. Must try read more
I've dined here many times and the food is always great! This time we went on a Sunday in the late afternoon with a group of 7. Currently the parking is still free in that plaza but I would expect the parking fees to be implemented soon. We called about 20min ahead to order the oven roasted catfish and when we got there our table was already prepped for us. We also ordered the beef cube steak (bo luc lac), fried egg rolls (cha gio) and fried chicken with butter (canh ga chien bo). The catfish is a very large serving and was more than enough for our party. It comes with rice paper, noodles and an assortment of veggies to make wraps. If you have a large enough party, I would definitely recommend trying it! The catfish skin is nice and crispy and the meat is juicy and flavorful. The beef cube steak is tender and flavorful. The fried egg rolls are nice and crispy. And the chicken wings are crunchy and juicy on the inside. I would definitely recommend all three! Service is quick and attentive. Food comes out so quick! I would definitely recommend a try here for some good family style Vietnamese food. read more
My first time to try this famous Vietnamese restaurant. I've seen how long the line was every time we were in the area- we didn't attempt to line up. Today was not very busy because we came in early. We ordered the roasted whole Catfish topped with garlic, peanuts, and other spices. We loved how crunchy and well cooked it was. The crispy skin was my favorite- it tasted like pork rinds. It was so good that we wanted to go back again and order the same dish. Loved the service too- the staff were very friendly and efficient. Still our go-to place on Convoy for Pho and Vermicelli Noodle Bowls. So delicious. Plenty of parking. Menu is pretty extensive. They have good drinks too. Iced coffee is rich and yummy. Food comes out quick once you order. Portions are decent size...you will leave full and satisfied. :) Service is quick. Place is clean and spacious. If you don't want to wait for bill, just go up to cash register and pay. read more

Authentic Vietnamese food with portions big enough for the family ! I was a little disappointed when the big fried crep came out undercooked with wet batter still in the middle. BUT their jellyfish salad and combos are not to be slept on. Keep in mind they accept cash, Venmo and zelle for payment ! (No credit cards) Would totally come back here read more

Overrated!! My friends and I came here on a weekday around 5pm and were seated right away. Service was bad. We were rushed to order so we asked for more time and then they didn't come back for a while. We all got the same pho (I forgot which one). I'm used to having bottles of hoisin & sriracha on the table so having the packets was a little weird. They never refilled our waters. Around $20 for a small bowl of pho. Won't come back here. read more

My mother-in-law remembers this restaurant vividly from her last visit in San Diego 6 years ago! She insisted that we go back as she recalls loving the food! There was four of us so we ordered a ton of food to share. We ordered a number of their self-wrap at girls and fried egg rolls. They're lemongrass and spicy tofu, their chicken, and seafood fried rice. The spicy and lemongrass tofu was amazing! For not being a tofu fan I was so impressed! Overall their food was very tasty and I would definitely go back! read more

I can't believe it's been 11 years since my last review! Time for an update. This is easily one of my most favorite Vietnamese restaurants. I love that they have all of the classic OG dishes like sour fish soup & caramelized+braised fish (served in a clay pot). I like making the spring rolls with nem nuong too! Pretty fun for people who haven't dabbled in Vietnamese food often. I like their banh xeo when I want something light. If you like chicken wings, you'd love the butter wings. We usually get a half order so we can order more dishes. Big back priorities you know. Super crispy & flavorful on the outside, juicy on the inside. Love that it's family friendly so bringing the kids makes it easy. The parking lot can get crazy packed so I would recommend going during their slower hours. Bathroom is for customers only. Servers are pretty fast unless it's a holiday & they're packed. Quality of the food never misses. I've been coming here for years & will continue to do so until I'm shriveled up into a raisin read more

The staff are friendly, and the portions are generous. There's plenty of seating, and I hardly had to wait for a table. They don't accept Apple Pay, but chip cards are fine. Unfortunately, I can't give more stars because of the taste of the food. Everything was just too intense and overly salty. The noodles themselves were salty, the soup was salty, and even the stir-fry sauce was too salty. The wontons themselves were okay, but they weren't enough to balance out the overall flavor. None of the other positives could make up for the disappointing flavors. read more
This is the first time I've eaten at this restaurant. There are plenty of seating. They take your order quickly. We ordered the soup (forgot the name), char-broiled beef, spring rolls, and the fish with Thai basil. I often order the spring rolls. The springs rolls are good! The charbroiled beef is tasty and tender. I liked the fish in Thai basil. The soup is good too. The ambience is casual. Service is good and attentive. Enjoyed our meal greatly. read more
This is my go to spot when I want to eat Pho without waiting too long. The parking here in comparison is better (considering the rest of convoy is always crowded) and the food here is always good! I will note that the workers didnt really follow the waitlist, they just let the people standing in the restaurant first. read more
Hands down one of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. The ca kho (catfish) is incredible, a must get for sure. I need to order the bo luc lac one of these days, because it's one of my favorite dishes and I am overcome with waves of jealousy any time I am there and see someone else order it. The com tam dishes are wonderful, super flavorful with fresh crunchy veg and I could eat the thit nuong every day forever. My one tiny ding is that their pho is perfectly fine but nothing mindblowing. It always super easy to park in this lot, and service is top notch. The only thing is that they very often only take cash because their credit card machines are seemingly always down. read more
Everyone knows this is the place to go to get the oven roasted catfish dish (ca nuong da don). Make sure to order it right when you sit down and have a hungry party with you. It is VERY shareable. It comes with spring roll paper, bowl of water, veggie platter (lettuce, mint, cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, and pineapples), vermicelli noodles, dipping sauces (fish sauce and fermented anchovy sauce), and the star of the show.. a giant plate carrying the crispy catfish with a knife sticking out of it. It is garnished with crispy fried onions, scallions, and peanuts. You will see what i mean by you gotta be hungry and it's shareable. It is massive! Loved that we get to make our own spring rolls and pick off of the catfish. Crispy skin with a very moist meat on the inside. Make sure to scoop some of the garnish! I personally like dipping it in the fermented anchovy sauce (mam nem) because it gives it more of a savory and an aroma of fish and pineapples. This place the mam nem isn't potent like the one my mom makes at home. Im thinking it is just in case for the general public because it can be very overpowering and stinky and they might not enjoy it. The other option is the fish sauce which is nicely balanced but gotta add in the sriracha to kick it up a notch. One of my fave dishes from this place. Other items that we got to share were the fish sauce wings (ga chien nuoc mam). THIS must be ordered right away as well as it takes awhile also. Not as long as the catfish. It's crispy and sticky. Be careful because it can be extremely hot if you're chowing down right away. Very flavorful. Nice balance of sweet and savory, hints of fishy with an umami flavor. Can be eaten with a side of rice if you request for it. But we know what was up with the spring rolls and opted out of getting that. Another dish we tried was one of the salads Shrimp and Jelly fish salad (goi sua tom). You can get it with pork also but we didn't get that because I don't eat pork. The salad was really refreshing. Papaya, celery, mint, cucumber, carrots, with the protein and peanuts. The light fish sauce vinaigrette was delicious. Was not overpowering. Had enough of the sweet and sour. LOVE that they had shrimp chips to eat with it. A lot of different textures in the dish. The service was great. Very nice and super attentive. Restaurant is in a plaza and has parking. Depending on what time of the day you go, it might be tricky but we lucked out for a late lunch. Currently they're accepting Venmo or Cash at the moment. So be prepared for that if you plan on going. It's posted on the door and when you sit down they will let you know as well. I think depending on how busy it is or if it's lunch time, one section of the restaurant is not used. We should have known when met with the sign at the door, "No Credit Cards, Cash or Venmo Only". We were in SD, coming from OC, so this is quite new for us to see. Tourist/Yelpers be warn, save your money and find another pho restaurant. We only settled here because we have a fussy toddler and needed to grab a quick dinner. The original place we wanted to go to had no parking and this was the next close spot in the area. If I had the chance to pick something else, I would have. I got a tummy ache from eating here, so another warning for diners. We thought it was kinda strange that they offering the hoison and siracha sauce in the form of Togo sauce packets. I have to say that's a first for us too. The ambience was a bit odd, no music, just chatter of guests. Ironically, they had a lot of tables filled, so maybe it's just a local joint? Service was fast and friendly, only this that was "bad" was they only took cash or Venmo. Restaurant was clean, not crowded and lots of room for big groups. My meal was super tasty. 3-4 stars. VENMO / CASH ONLY. This might be a hassle for some especially since nowadays people usually pay with card. Service was decent. They only have packaged sriracha, hoisin, and little containers of chili oil. We asked for fresh sliced peppers and they surprisingly didn't have it. They have a little tray with some napkins (just enough for the table, but they will give you more if you ask), wooden chopsticks, forks, spoons, & soup spoons. We ordered Fried Catfish. It came with rice paper, vermicelli noodles, lettuce, cucumbers, daikon/carrots, and pineapple. You can eat this with fish sauce or the strong sauce aka mam nem. The fish sauce, in my opinion, was on the sweeter side. Be sure to ask for some lime to elevate it! If you like catfish, you'll enjoy this! The skin was nice and crispy and the interior was soft and well cooked. In addition, I ordered the Shaking Beef since last time it was delicious. I mentioned medium rare to the waitress and she said don't worry they always cook it like that anyways. Well...it came and was burnt around the edges and a bit too done. I quickly removed them off the sizzling plate after tasting one. These honestly didn't have much flavor to them. No black pepper and no garlic. In the sizzling plate there were some sliced onions and some butter. It came with white rice (you could also get fried rice) and some shredded lettuce, pickled carrots and daikon, 2 slices of tomatoes, and 2 slices of cucumbers. I highly recommend pouring some fish sauce over the lettuce! I ordered Iced Vietnamese Coffee and they did give it to me in plastic cup and lid-- but with no straw. I looked around several times to ask for one, but it's as they all avoided looking in our direction lol. The drink was a deep brown color, strong and not as sweet. I would prefer more condensed milk personally, if you let the ice melt a bit it's ok. It's not super fragrant -- just a basic ca phe sua da. My great aunt ordered the Che Ba Mau (3 Layered Bean Dessert). The layer of mung beans was about less than an inch. The red bean layer was massive which took up more than half the cup. And then on top was the pandan jelly squiggles and a super sweet coconut milk. My great aunt said she wished it was less sweet, less red bean, more pandan jelly-- and wished that they gave crushed ice in it. Overall, a nice place for a big group to catch up over some food. Probably skip the shaking beef and order a fried catfish to share. We had 4-6 people eating it! Fried rice is a good choice too. They do have an extensive menu so plenty of choices. AMBIANCE: Parking: Tight parking plaza so come early, carpool, or rideshare. Seating: Inside seating, plenty of room! Good for pairs or large groups. Total, maybe about 50 people. Vibes: Welcome to Convoy! A busy industrial-esque area with mainly a lot of eateries. The spot itself is pretty nice. A warm environment with simple homage to their Vietnamese culture here and there. The natural lighting is nice along with the Vietnamese elevator music. It's great for a solo food adventure or a group hangout FOOD: Garlic Butter Wings (Recommend) Delicious! A delightful crunch with a mix of spicy and savory flavors. The peppers, garlic, and green onions give it a good kick. Glazed Wings (Recommend) People usually are intimidated by fish sauce however this has a nice subtle taste to the wings. Reminds me a bit of sweet and sour, impressive how it maintains a good crunch. Fingerlicking good, especially as it's pretty sticky. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Great! I called ahead of time and my order was ready and transaction was relatively simple. TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. Excellent! A wide menu, delicious food, reasonable prices, and a pleasant experience. There may be a lot of Vietnamese spots but this stands out with the range of delicious (classic and a bit modern) dishes to quality flavors.
