Everyone knows this is the place to go to get the oven roasted catfish dish (ca nuong da don). Make sure to order it right when you sit down and have a hungry party with you. It is VERY shareable. It comes with spring roll paper, bowl of water, veggie platter (lettuce, mint, cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, and pineapples), vermicelli noodles, dipping sauces (fish sauce and fermented anchovy sauce), and the star of the show.. a giant plate carrying the crispy catfish with a knife sticking out of it. It is garnished with crispy fried onions, scallions, and peanuts. You will see what i mean by you gotta be hungry and it's shareable. It is massive! Loved that we get to make our own spring rolls and pick off of the catfish. Crispy skin with a very moist meat on the inside. Make sure to scoop some of the garnish! I personally like dipping it in the fermented anchovy sauce (mam nem) because it gives it more of a savory and an aroma of fish and pineapples. This place the mam nem isn't potent like the one my mom makes at home. Im thinking it is just in case for the general public because it can be very overpowering and stinky and they might not enjoy it. The other option is the fish sauce which is nicely balanced but gotta add in the sriracha to kick it up a notch. One of my fave dishes from this place. Other items that we got to share were the fish sauce wings (ga chien nuoc mam). THIS must be ordered right away as well as it takes awhile also. Not as long as the catfish. It's crispy and sticky. Be careful because it can be extremely hot if you're chowing down right away. Very flavorful. Nice balance of sweet and savory, hints of fishy with an umami flavor. Can be eaten with a side of rice if you request for it. But we know what was up with the spring rolls and opted out of getting that. Another dish we tried was one of the salads Shrimp and Jelly fish salad (goi sua tom). You can get it with pork also but we didn't get that because I don't eat pork. The salad was really refreshing. Papaya, celery, mint, cucumber, carrots, with the protein and peanuts. The light fish sauce vinaigrette was delicious. Was not overpowering. Had enough of the sweet and sour. I would prefer more condensed milk personally, if you let the ice melt a bit it's ok. It's not super fragrant -- just a basic ca phe sua da. My great aunt ordered the Che Ba Mau (3 Layered Bean Dessert). The layer of mung beans was about less than an inch. The red bean layer was massive which took up more than half the cup. And then on top was the pandan jelly squiggles and a super sweet coconut milk. My great aunt said she wished it was less sweet, less red bean, more pandan jelly-- and wished that they gave crushed ice in it. Overall, a nice place for a big group to catch up over some food. I am so embarrassed, I was SOOO excited to eat that I only remembered to take a photo of the vegetables that came with our dishes!! Whoops Anywho, I was extremely excited to find out that there's a Vietnamese restaurant in SD that serves 7 courses of beef!! I thought I could only get that in San Jose//Orange County! Came here at 7:30pm on a Sunday night for a party of 3 and was immediately seated. We asked about the 7 Courses of Beef but they actually stopped serving the full 7 courses together about 2 years ago, but you can still order the courses a la carte under the "Rice Paper Wraps" part of the menu. We went with the Vinegar Fondue with Beef (my favorite), the Ground Beef Wrapped in Grape Leaves (my boyfriend's favorite), and the Hot Grill with Beef (Butter Beef). For each of these, you're served the meat to cook at the table (if it's raw), and they all are to be hand wrapped by the customer (it's essentially a "build your own spring roll" meal). For ingredients you're given rice paper, romaine lettuce, mint leaves, cilantro, cucumber, pickled diakon and carrots, and pineapples. There are 2 different dipping sauces provided too, the typical fish sauce and another fermented anchovy paste sauce. Quite honestly I feel like Phuong Trang's version of the Vinegar Beef is so much better than what I've had in San Jose. You're served a small pot of vinegar that gets boiled at your table, you add the onions and cook the sliced beef to your liking, and then you build your own spring roll with the cooked meat and vegetables. Actually Phuong Trang's Ground Beef Wrapped in Grape Leaves is also better than what I've had in San Jose too, the pieces were bigger, more flavorful and honestly the quality of the meat and grape leaves were definitely better. I feel like in SJ, the leaves were wrapped thicker and were bitter, but the grape leaves at Phuong Trang were thin and cooked nicely. Appearance wise they look like sausages wrapped in seaweed. The Hot Grill with Beef (Butter Beef) was a bit much for me since I don't usually consume much butter in my life general. It felt heavier, greasier, and although it came with onions and lemongrass it wasn't as flavorful as the other two dishes we ordered. These three dishes came out to be about $70 total which was enough food for our party of 3. It's actually cheaper than if we'd had the full 7 courses of beef elsewhere too (it's typically $35-40pp). All in all AMAZING meal, I HIGHLY recommend trying it, you won't regret it!! (But I guess it'd be a learning curve if you didn't already know how to wrap spring rolls. Went there for Friday lunch. We order the bue bo hue, spring roll and vegi crepes. The noodle soup is flavorful but size is a bit small for a $15 bowl. Ate here last week and walked out confused--how is this place sitting at 3.9 stars? I'm guessing it's mostly from non-Viet folks who don't know what good Vietnamese food actually tastes like and maybe got mad the bún chả wasn't shaped like an egg roll. This spot is solidly in the top 10% of Vietnamese joints in SD. Not just passable, not just "hey that was decent," but actual oh wow, this reminds me of that place in Westminster level good. We had the bún bò Huế--solid spice, deep broth, actual huyết cubes (not for the TikTok crowd, but real ones will get it). The bò lúc lắc came out sizzling, maybe a touch sweeter than I'd like but still demolished. Cha gio? Golden, crisp, not oily. And the nuoc cham didn't taste like watered-down fish sauce from a Sysco bottle. Place is packed, but service moved fast. Respect to the staff for still being friendly while clearly in the weeds. One of the best pho spots in SD. It's definitely one of our go to spots. The broth is so flavorful. Love the rare steak and tripe pho they load it up with the meat and tripe. Also their spring rolls there are so good. They also have so many different variety of Vietnamese food on their menu. Service there is always great and food usually comes out pretty quick. read more
