We purchased a new grand piano during a Rockley Foundation sale at Mesa Community College over the summer. As is the case with sales of this type, the pianos receive a quick tune on-site before the sale, but it is not uncommon at all to require additional servicing after they are delivered to your home. Such was the case with ours when one of the keys began sticking. Leta called me yesterday (Saturday) after receiving an email from the Rockley Foundation, whom I contacted after the key began sticking. Leta was very pleasant to work with. Her concern that we be taken care of was apparent. She dispatched Fred Smith ("Fred The Piano Tuner") that same day. My son-in-law met with Fred and was very impressed at his knowledge, 40+ years of experience and his kind and caring demeanor. He spent a remarkable amount of time with the piano and showed many things to my interested grandsons. We opted for the repair (covered by Rockley - thank you!!) and to have an extensive tuning done on it at our cost. By the end, several keys were "unstuck" and it was brought to "A440" (?). I was interested in purchasing a Yamaha baby grand piano listed for-sale on Facebook. I played the instrument and it sounded great, but I wanted to make sure it was mechanically sound. Whenever you find a 'gem' online, speed is of the essence, otherwise, you could lose it quick. I contacted Fred and even though he's not close to N. Scottsdale, he agreed to take a look at the piano on a Saturday AM. I met him for the first time at the buyer's house. Great guy - awesome piano player and very knowledgable about pianos. He educated me on what the history of the piano was and how to determine age, etc. He told me thinks he would work on to make the piano as perfect as possible. I'm not sure Fred's forte is appraising, but his ability to 'sound check' an instrument, was great. Well worth the $100 before spending thousands. read more

Fred tuned our piano recently. The piano has not been tuned for many years, since I am not a musical professional, so I had no idea how off the tunes were. Once he was all done, I used my Seiko STH100 Metronome/Tuner to check and 95% of the keys are right at the spot. Rest of 5% are extremely close and that would be my cheap $25 device margin error. Fred is a very nice personal with a heart of a teacher, showed me how to clean the piano inside. Will use again. read more

We just had our piano tuned by Fred Smith this morning. His service is really as good as it gets! He's extrememly knowledgeable and will answer any questions you might have about your piano. I hadn't had my piano tuned in almost NINE years and he tuned it in one sitting! I couldn't believe it. And he was also able to fix some keys that I was having trouble with. His prices are VERY reasonable as well. If you haven't had you piano tuned in a while, I highly reccomend giving him a call. It's so nice to have a tuned piano again :-) read more

Fred tuned my piano today. It has not been tuned in almost three years since I purchased it new. I had no idea how much out of tune it really was. Not only did Fred make my piano sound better than ever he gave me some pointers on how to take care of the piano I was not aware of. Fred gave my three year old Albert Weber a checkup and found a cracked soundboard (to my great surprise). Fortunately, I guess the location and type of crack is fairly common in AZ due to the dryness and it is not affecting the sound. Fred eased my concern considerably when he explained how it can be repaired (if I wished to do so). I guess if I ever want to trade it in on a Steinway I will have it fixed. In the mean time it sounds great thanks to Fred. It was obvious to me I had found the right person to take care of my piano. read more

Having moved my Somer piano from Monterey (cool, humid) to Gilbert (hot, dry) was a concern of mine regarding the piano. I found Fred on Yelp and other searches. True to others' experience, Fred knew about the piano's maker and history. He tuned it while explaining many things to me, including not to worry about the climate change. He adviced on which wall the piano will thrive the best. Fred also discovered there is a string missing in the piano - something years of tuning in CA did not reveal. Several months later, the piano is playing beautifully - the highest keys are a bit off, no surprise considering the stressful move it went through. Fred will be back in a couple months to retune and replace the missing (?? - how does that happen?) string. Love my piano and trust very few to care for it. Thanks, Fred. read more

This is my very first review on Yelp. I usually don't leave reviews but this one is too bad I have to let everyone know so you don't have to go through what I went through. Avoid! I bet theres better tuners out there. I just moved to Arizona so I had to come here and find a tuner. Unfortunately it wasn't a good one. I've been playing piano for 12 years now and this is my third piano. If you don't know anything about piano and don't even play, you probably wouldn't have problem with him. But I'm pretty professional. Honestly I was so shocked when he pulled an electric tuner out. I've never had any tuner use an electric tuner for my piano. All of my tuners had forks and their ears. But if he could get the job done, I wouldn't have any problem with that. I played after he tuned. It wasn't as good as I expected. And couple keys wouldn't even stop ringing. So I called him. He said he would stopped by when he was int he area which he did. But before he left the second time, he said you didn't buy the piano from me. You don't have warranty with me. But I paid him $135 to do his job and it's his problem he couldn't do his job right the first time. And I just played again to check. There's still one key wouldn't stop ringing. He didn't let me play and check either time after he finished. Just hurry left instead. That's just not what I have experienced with my other tuners. So go find yourself a better tuner I don't want any other people having to experience this and waste $135. read more

My piano has never sounded better. Fred is personable and pleasant to work with. He cleaned the inside of my dusty piano which I've been afraid to do. He also repaired things that no one would touch before. (And of course tuned it as well) Finally my piano is whole after 15 years. Thanks to Fred!! read more

My parents have a cheap, old upright. My girls are learning to play the piano, so when we visit my parents it ends up being a good opportunity for them to practice. The piano was out of tune and its keys stuck. Mr. Fred Smith did an excellent job of tuning it as well as unsticking the keys. The piano sounds quite excellent now thanks to Mr. Smith.
