This place has amazing fresh fish and seafood. Purchased Jumbo snow crab legs today, frozen which definitely increases the price as if 24.99/lb wasn't enough. AND they were soooo d**m salty, couldn't taste the sweetness of crab meat from all the salt. Perhaps the fish is better, yet I'd pass on the "legs" going forward.. Picked up a pound of Scottish salmon this afternoon. Sublime! Well, sublemon. I prepared it French style in parchment with thin slices of lemon, fennel bulb, and herbs from my garden. 13 minutes at 400. Make sure the parchment is hermetically sealed. Results? Best salmon I think I've ever eaten. Not fishy. Moist. Flavorful umami bomb. The gentleman behind the counter removed the pin bones for me amd trimmed the thin end. I buy fish for my family weekly. We have tried all different types based on the owner's recommendations. I have found the fish to be extremely fresh and taste. My kids didn't like fish until I started buying it from Pickford's. They are more expensive than your local grocery store. However, with Pickford's, you know what you are getting is extremely fresh and hasn't been sitting on display for a week. You get what you pay for. The owners and staff at Pickford's are so helpful and kind. Their customer service is fantastic. They really go out of their way to help their customers. It's appreciated and doesn't go unnoticed. Pickford's is truly the hidden gem of Harrisonburg. I used to swear you can't find fresh seafood in the Valley and you can't -- unless it's Pickford's! Will, the owner, has spent the last 5 years perfecting his ordering to ensure he gets the freshest, wild-caught seafood available. Many of his offerings are sashimi-grade, which is ideal for a sushi lover like me! I was blown away by Will's professionalism and knowledge of his products and his willingness to share how he acquired each item. Shops like this are hard to find these days and are vastly overlooked because of "churn and burn" type companies like Costco and Martin's, which offer solid products, but not top-tier like Pickford's. After seeing the quality of the products, I couldn't help but try the Texas shrimp, which Will steamed and seasoned to perfection! He's not kidding that they taste amazingly close to lobster tail. I can't wait to try even more products (I keep hearing about the incredible salmon spread!?) and will certainly reach out for custom ordering, which is just another reason that sets this place apart from the rest. The diverse and fresh seafood at Pickford's can't be beat, but what takes it the extra mile is the customer service. You're doing the Lord's work, Will! read more

Buyer beware. And, if you want to risk it, at least don't let your kids eat any of the seafood here! I came here recently while visiting a friend. We got both oysters and lobster. I don't know which were bad (maybe both), but both my friend and I were sick (I mean, throwing up sick) for about 24 hours after. I can't think of seafood anymore without feeling nauseous. My friend is embarrassed to write a review since he's local to the community. But, I thought this was a matter of safety. I would never want to buy tainted product from this place. The owner is very knowledgable and his customer service is impeccable. I called him for Monkfish on Tuesday. He didn't have any, so he ordered a pound for me & called me to let me know it was in. Any other person would've just told me they didn't have any and hung up the phone. He's a very nice guy. Very nice selection for reasonable prices. They had 3 kinds of oysters, all excellent quality. They have a nice range of fresh fish, and plenty of frozen choices as well. We got some oysters for the half shell, some to grill, and some smoked alligator sausage. We also sampled a fantastic smoked salmon spread that we will keep in mind for a party. Always in for a treat whenever I come by. Don't be fooled by the small storefront, this is definitely the best fishmonger I have visited in the area. Will is incredibly knowledgeable about all that he offers, and the selection is really great. Sign up for his newsletters to get a weekly list of what fresh fish he has to offer. The selection is truly spectacular, with Will offering fresh specialties from far away. This is my go to place for oysters in particular, with some from even as far as Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, as well as local varieties. We found this tiny little gem while we were in Massanutten looking for a place to have dinner. We were amazed by the variety of fish and the owners were so friendly and knowledgeable. We ended up buying a ton of fish; wild Scottish salmon, rockfish, and a few that I had never heard of before. They also sell this incredibly addictive salmon dip that should be called crack. Well worth the price tag. We also got advice on how to cook the fish and where to find some yummy ice cream in the area. We will be stopping there whenever we visit our son up north. read more

This is a very helpful place with an amazing selection of seafood you really cant find anywhere else. I used to live in a large city and never saw the types of fish in Pickford's case. The selection is small, but well chosen, and changes each week, so this is a great place for adventurous cooks who are always looking for new things to try. The owner was incredibly knowledgable about his selections and the best methods for cooking each fish. Everything looked and sounded so good, it was difficult to decide what to get. We ended up getting a fillet of Blue Moki, a pacific fish I'd never heard of before, and two types of oysters. While visiting the area and wanting to cook a seafood meal in the condo, I saw a review saying this place had the best crab cake. Althou the sales guy went on and on bout how they prepared it, I was very disappointed. Although it had plenty of crab, Something about the texture it was more like a biscuit than a traditional cake. I'd also change the $$ rating to a $$$$. when buying fish u expect it to be pricey so when I saw only 2 $$ thought it would be REASONABLE. $15.99 for an 8 oz smoked salmon spread which was good but really. The rest of the fish some offerings unordinary like tuna, sea bass, while fresh, was all over $15.99 a pound leaving me to believe a local grocer would probably hav most of the same cheaper. read more

Pickford's has some of the best seafood I've ever eaten. His product is of impeccable quality and his product knowledge is second to none. I feel very good supporting this business. Pickford understands the challenges facing the seafood industry and he only provides a sustainable, fairly traded, healthy, quality product. All of the fish is great, the calamari salad is phenomenal, his ginger dressing/marinade is amazing, and the scallops and salmon are the best I've had - and I grew up at the beach. I went to Pickford's to buy some Atlantic Cod for a dish I planned to make that night. They were out of cod! Was there another fish I could buy in place of the cod that would work with the cream sauce it bakes in? They only had Rockfish, which I was unfamiliar with. It was described as sweet and delicate. So I had to decide - go to a supermarket for uncertain cod or try the fresh Rockfish. The answer was clear. I bought the Rockfish and indeed it was delicious as a fish and in the sauce. Last month i bought some Salmon from Scotland and it was the best I have ever had. So Pickford's is two for two; I really am looking forward to my next purchase there.
