Absolutely terrible experience. My friend and I threw our canned cocktail in the trash before going inside because we wanted to follow the rules and not bring outside alcohol into the bar. Even after doing exactly that, we were refused entry for no good reason. The staff were unreasonable, unwelcoming, and made us feel like we had done something wrong when we were actually trying to comply. If this is how they treat potential customers, don't expect respect or common sense. There are plenty of other places that actually appreciate your business. As a graduate from jmu, we came back to visit beautiful downtown Harrisonburg. We had just gotten out of a big jmu football win and couldn't have been more excited to indulge in cigarettes and tasty ice cold busch lights. On our walk toward finnegans our mouths watering and morale at an all time high we come up to a basically empty bar where a bouncer was looking to charge a cover charge. As an alumni of the university where both my parents and my sisters attended I was very disappointed in the cover charge because none of us had ever experienced paying a cover for anywhere but back country which unfortuneately closed down. After traveling hundreds of miles and talking about finnegans for hours in the car ride being met with a cover caused sheer disappointment. Hopefully the next time we go down there we can come back and enjoy our favorite bar again. read more

We were not aware that the restaurant permitted smoking - we walked through the bar/smoking area to get to the non smoking area. We passed the kitchen on the way to the non smoking section and the kitchen area appeared very layered/greasy dirty looking (it is an older building). The crab stuffed mushrooms tasted like stove top stuffing -odd flavor and texture and the cheese sauce was very sour. The fried shrimp and salad bar was good. Baked potato was not cooked through (hard and not hot). The combo seafood platter was disappointing - the steamed shrimp were undercooked. The 2 crab clusters - 1 cluster had 3 small skinny legs and 1 small claw and the other had 1 skinny legs and 1 claw. I did not eat this and the waitress credited to our bill. Finnigans is known to students as that bar you can drink in while smoking because it's grandfathered in. That's kinda like saying a vintage muscle car is a car because you can drive it to the grocery store or whatever. You CAN smoke in Finnegans at certain hours/times. You can also eat there. It's like an old school lawyer's lunch place (I suppose I'm in that category.) There's the salad bar, there are lunch specials, the vibe is a cross between dive bar (which is a compliment) and (I went to law school in New Orleans) a neighborhood bar/restaurant the locals frequent but the tourists don't understand. I took a dear friend there this weekend, and we sat in the back, where you could watch the kitchen and the prep. Our waiter recommended the stuffed mushrooms with The Sauce. House made. Not sure what is in The Sauce but the crab stuffed mushrooms were a delivery system for THAT SAUCE. It was kinda like Hollandaise or Bearnaise but without the vinegary bite (which I enjoy) but the texture and all of it was amazing. A gin and tonic ain't like a tiny glass. Order one. Return, repeat, enjoy. Lunch specials are great. The staff is wonderful. Yeah, you can smoke darts in there until your heart gives out, iffn you want to do that (I think it's like after 4pm if you're intent on that part of it) but it is so much more than that. read more

If you want a dive bar and to walk out of there smelling like cigarettes, but good cheap drinks and somewhat decent bar food...then this place is definitely for you! Attempted to visit on 6/22/2021 but we walked out before we ordered anything. Their website and menu online is so deceiving; they make it seem like they're a seafood restaurant. This is not a restaurant. It is a dive bar that just so happens to serve food. And after a certain time of day, they allow patrons to smoke inside which is just so disgusting to still be doing in 2021. When we walked in, we instantly knew we were not in a place we wanted to be, but we sat at a table anyway and attempted to give them the benefit of the doubt. The tables were disgusting, the menus were sticky, and the bar was crowded full of people gambling on slot-type machines. Racist bar? Walked in to grab a drink last night around 10pm, first time there, had to use the bathroom first. Guy with plaid shirt walks in behind me and kicks me out while I'm still urinating. They probably assumed I was just using their bathroom for free, but when I explained I was going to get a drink, the guy said "that's a no go" and proceeds to block me from even washing my hands. Normally I'd shrug it off as a terrible business, but its hard to ignore being the only brown guy getting kicked out of a mostly empty bar called "Finnigan's". I'm not sure where to even start. We didn't read the reviews, but did call to let them know we were coming with a big party, and wanted to know if we needed to make a reservation. We were told that they didn't take reservations, as that was their busy time, but would try to keep a table open for us. We had to park in the parking garage around the corner, as there is no parking on premises. Walking to the front door, we noticed a sign that said for non-smoking entrance, go around the side. Around the side, you find the "non-smoking entrance" which still takes you through the smoking section of the bar. I've never been to a place where you had to walk through a smoking section, to get to the non-smoking section. The waitress had no sense of urgency. We placed our drink orders, and one of our party guests asked for a drink list. She never received the drink list. It took a long time for her to come take our order. They were out of hush puppies and spinach dip. There was something else out too, but I wasn't paying attention. They were not busy at all, like the gentleman on the phone lead us to believe. Maybe if you were drinking at the bar, but there weren't many eating dinner. They only allow you one trip to the salad bar, with certain meals. I only got a salad, but the dressing was good, and so were the croutons. Our meals took forever to come. They brought out the kids meals first (with the exception of one, so he had to walk the other kids eat). After 5 or so minutes, she brought out the next round of food. So 1/3 of our table had food, while the rest waited. They brought out 2 more waves of food over the next 5-10 minutes, until everyone had their food. Some of the portion sizes were huge, others not much. A vegetarian at our table got the black bean burger, and they brought her a regular burger with bacon. She had about 7 fries on her plate. I got the blackened chicken Alfredo. Some of the blackened chicken was delicious, but other pieces were tough, and dry. The Alfredo was bland, and didn't have much flavor. My husband said his jambalaya wasn't great either. It took forever to get our check. We watched some of the wait staff take their breaks at a tiny table by the door, where they also smoked cigarettes. As soon as we paid, we ran out of there as fast as we could. This place was a dive, and not even a good one. I feel like this is the place you'll see on bar rescue, in the near future. read more

I witnessed a bouncer here punching a defenseless person repeatedly in the head against a brick wall in an alley while they were covering their head with their hands. I hope that this bouncer had legal action taken against them, but I bet he even kept his job. The victim looked to be a teenager and was significantly smaller than the adult bouncer. The only reason I gave it a star is to be able to post the review. We are visiting Harrisonburg. I googled seafood restaurants and this one had a great menu. We got there and opened the door and I felt like I had sat down in an ash tray. They allow smoking after 3pm. That should be on their website. I know it's a bar as well but we are from Texas and even the majority of the restaurant/bars are smoke free. We left without any service. Totally disappointed! My friend went for one drink and then went somewhere else, and the bouncer said when she came back she couldn't come In because they have a no reenter policy...this was 9 to 12, it's so ratchet there and smells like cigs and they are rude for no reason, also they were mean to my friend on her 21st don't reccomend! Had some grad friends come in for the weekend, they have been loyal customers for 4 years, upon entry was told one of them had been seen at another restaurant with a beer so the manager said they couldn't come in. This place seemed to be the only place in Harrisonburg that had raw oysters where you didn't need a reservation, so my boyfriend popped in here for dinner. The reviews were right - this place is divey - the front room is for smoking and the non-smoking section is in the back of the joint, seemingly tucked away from human contact. The best thing about this place was the oysters - they weren't bad and were cheap, but also weren't cleaned properly. We also got the fried crab cake balls - don't let your imagination run wild with this one. They were literally, fried crab cake balls, yet were room temperature when they came out. My thought is that they might have been frozen. For entrees, I ordered the Scallops in Gouda Cream Sauce w/ a side of she-crab soup and baked potato. The scallops were large and plump, but they were served in a trench and swimming in the sauce! There was more sauce than scallop - I can't believe that people actually eat their food like that. My boyfriend ordered the seafood jambalaya. It was a HUGE portion - so huge that he could only eat half. However, although the jambalaya was cooked spicy as he requested, it lacked all other flavors. The sauce was way too tomato based and lacked seasoning. oh, and the salad bar is kind of scary looking. beware. The saddest part of all, is that the seafood itself was pretty good quality. The scallops in both of our dishes were huge and cooked nicely. The jambalaya was packed with scallop and shrimp. As I mentioned before, the oysters weren't too shabby for the price. I think that Finnigan's could really turn things around if they re-vamped their menu.
