I love a good deli and pickles are a must with any sandwich; so when I saw that there was a deli on Whidbey Island and it was called Pickles, it felt like fate. We stopped in around 11am for lunch on a Saturday. It was moderately busy and definitely grew more busy as the lunch hour passed. They have a ton of options, we had someone who is gluten free and a vegetarian in our group and they both had no problem finding something. They also have a build your own sandwich option, just in case you can't find anything appealing on the menu. I went with their turkey and bacon sandwich, but cold instead of heated. It was everything I wanted it to be. It was HUGE with loads of meat, cheese, and toppings (including pickles). I paired it with a bag of chips and it was perfection. Everyone else enjoyed their sandwiches as well. Our only gripe was that the gluten free sandwich was much smaller than the rest, but I think that happens sometimes because the bread options just aren't as good, but it sucks to have to pay more for a smaller sandwich. I will absolutely make this a stop next time I'm in town! read more

On Nov 7, 2025 three of us stopped at Pickles Deli for sandwiches. It was my sisters birthday and we were visiting the island and decided to get something to eat. I had heard good things about this place but what a disappointment. My sister decided to order a make your own combo on a sub bread. We took them to go, that was our first mistake. When we got all the way home and opened up our sandwiches hers had a tiny dash of mustard on one side of the sandwich, 2 tiny slices of meat and one slice of cheese and lettuce and it was $15. You have got to be kidding me, practically nothing in that big piece of bread and $15 dollars. I honestly wasn't impressed with my sandwich, oh it had more meat but the taste wasn't something that would bring me back there, even if I was starving. Don't waste your money, go somewhere else. Very disappointing... Oh, and if I could have given it a zero rating I would have but it only shows stars, no negative rating. read more

I love the food at this place. I look forward to different sandwiches for weeks until I can get back here. Over the years we have tried most of the sandwiches and have never been disappointed with the food. The reason this is a four star review is the service is ok. They do get busy and while I understand that there will be a wait being ignored for 3-5 minutes is annoying. Also double check your to go orders before you leave. This review is to encourage you to try it out. I bring my out of town friends and they make sure to stop in whenever they visit. Exceptional sandwiches. Professional and courteous staff keep things running clean and smooth. I have been eating here since they opened. The quality of the ingredients is second to none. I have tried every sandwich and they are all winners, even the ones outside of my preferences. I really appreciate that nothing changed when the restaurant changed owners. Their cookies are delicious and competitively priced. The amount of beverages and snacks available is very impressive. Local art, t-shirts, and available swag make this one of the best and most important restaurants on the island, not just the south end. I recently took a party of 8 here without warning after a wedding and we were able to sit in the extended seating area in the back with zero problems. Food comes out quick and beautiful, like they care about what they're doing. This is a great place to get fueled up before grocery shopping, thrifting, servicing a vehicle, or headed to/from the ferry. I recommend the Twisted Rueben. Viva la Pickle! read more

Pickles Deli is exactly what you'd want a deli shop to be: it has an extensive menu, many delicious options to choose from, freshly assembled behind the counter, etc. I usually get the Spicy Italian (heated), which I highly recommend - it's packed with flavor! The only downside (and the reason I'm knocking off a star) is the actual ordering process. It's tough to get through on the phone to place a phone order, and each time I've shown up to order in person, I've waited in line and then had the cashier walk away to do something else when I get to the front of the line. It's a bit frustrating, but once you actually place the order it takes about 10-15 minutes. If you visit Whidbey Island, this is a great option to stop by for lunch! read more

This was not the best experience I've had at Pickle's Deli. The lady taking our orders was not welcoming at all and seemed like she wasn't having the best day. I had gotten a fountain drink to go with my sandwich, and I was given a icy cooled glass cup which was very nice. But after I went to fill up my cup with some Diet Coke and took a sip I noticed that there wasn't any carbonation in the soda at all. I went back and tested all the other sodas and sure enough no carbonation. I ordered the Twisted Rueben, overall 3/5 in my opinion: very average for a Rueben sandwich I did like the bread though. My wife ordered the Tomato Basil Chicken Panini, which I took two bites of and both bites I got cold pieces of chicken while the rest of the sandwich was lukewarm. Not very much flavor at all either, 2/5. It had been a while since I'd been to Pickles Deli, and it will probably be another good amount of time before I go back. read more

On our way off the Island my husband and I wanted to grab a quick lunch and Pickles Deli wasthe perfect spot. My husband and I are vegetarian, and they had really good options for us! I had the greek salad and my husband had one of the sandwiches with Field Roast that was oh so good. The customer service was top notch, the choices awesome with soup, salad and sandwich options and the pickles, well what can I say were the best! Plan ahead. There's a line. They probably have a line when they're closed. This place seriously rules the roost for sandwiches--there are only so many truly amazing sandwich places around, and that's for 100 miles in any direction. Not just on the island. These guys hold their own with all the best of them, on or off the island. So, yeah. There's a line. We've been parking here and getting bagels for a while, and it took until yesterday to finally try a sandwich next door. The menu reels you in long before you ever get to the counter--in fact, we combed through the whole menu on the way to the ferry, while waiting for the ferry, and while we were on the ferry. There are so many classic sandwiches with so many creative details that even on paper, you can barely make up your mind. It took us all that time on the road before we got there before we finally settled on an order. We walk in and the line goes all down the counter, through the room on the kitchen side, and then back through the dining room, almost to the sidewalk. And this is at 2:00 in the afternoon. We though the lunch rush would die off before we got there. Nope! Every table was taken. We scored a table before placing our order (teamwork!) and got sandwiches, chips, and pickles. You notice before you even walk in that this place is a key account for Boar's Head Meats--they have the umbrellas, the neon, all the BH schwag a supplier could send. Pretty much every sandwich here uses BH, which is A-Okay with me. The quality is always good with their stuff. Pickles also uses BH pickles, and brines them for a while with peppercorns or pepperoncini, garlic, jalapeno, or another adjunct for added flavor. They had 5 up yesterday and we tried one of each--huge pickles, just a buck. They were all good, but the added flavors from the extra soaking were subtle. They were basically like good supermarket dills, just bigger. Worth it. The sandwiches were incredible. Toasty soft bread, big flavors. We got the Smoky Beast and the Spicy Italian, both served hot. The Beast had lots of earthy, creamy, umami notes. They really put a ton of gorgonzola on it. The Italian was amazing, just a classic cold-cut Dagwood sandwich piled up. So satisfying. With iced teas and bags of Kettle chips and a 20% tip, we were out the door for under $50. Pretty amazing for the quality, especially considering there's still at least half of every pickle in the fridge here at home. This place will be easy to hit again and again. read more

So, I totally know that businesses, especially in tourist areas, are slammed and struggling. I am not docking them any points for not picking up their phone or having a bit of a wait. You can tell the sandwich makers are working really hard and deserve all the tips. The sandwiches, however, are just okay. My spouse got a panini that ended up not being pressed or toasted. The ingredients were there and fine but part of the reason you get a panini is because it's pressed and warm. I got a club sandwich which I have gotten before but it was like this time it was all bread and one thin slice of each kind of meat and one piece of bacon. It was kind of like a bread sandwich with a meat accent. I've gone to this place a few other times over the years and would say that it suffers from a lack of consistency. So we basically go here once a month at least. We've always loved their sandwiches and salads...when they get the order right. Lately it seems as though attention to detail has fallen off. My birthday was recently here again, and my salad was messed up as well as another coworker. All good though...made the best of it. I love how they can make almost all or most sandwiches into salads. And they are just as good if not better! I could almost say that this sandwich joint would be a huge factor of moving to the island. A delightful deli at the south end of Whidbey, we stumbled across this partially because everything else south side was closed, but also because a good sandwich solves all, right? This review is based on two things, my experience eating at Pickles Deli and my experience with Pickles Deli as a business in the community. Eating at Pickles Deli: Not bad, although I'm not a big sandwich person, these are above average. But there is an issue with consistency, as other reviewers have said. Recently it seems like the sandwiches aren't made with care. The ingredient quality has changed and there's not as much (ie one slice of meat). So it's hard to justify the high prices. Pickles Deli in the community: The owner and staff alike need to work on being kind and polite to other people. It seems that the owner is very warm to certain customers and not to others. Some of the staff members can be rude as well and this reflects poorly on the restaurant. When people hesitate to come to your deli because they don't want to deal with your staff... that's not good for business. Overall, I would only recommend this deli if you don't have other options. read more

Stopped into this cool deli on a weekend trip in Whidbey Island and was very glad I did! First off, the atmosphere is cool and there are plenty of spaces for you to sit. Or it would be a great place to buy something and take it to go. Second, the food. It was yummmmmmy!! They made me a custom Tuna Salad Sandwich and my gf got the Wild Salmon Sandwich. Both were really, really good!! Fresh vegetables that make the different variety of taste in each bite very good. We also got a pickle. Liked the Tuna Salad so much we bought a pound and took it to go. Made our own sandwiches of it during the Super Bowl. Third, the people. Very nice staff. A young woman took my order and she was super nice. The other young lady made our sandwiches including my special order. She was also soooo nice and I can tell a hard worker. There was a man who was busing tables and cleaning and he seemed cool too even though I never talked with him. Fourth, the price. I thought the prices were very reasonable. Can tell they have fresh ingredients and give big servings so we left filled up. Only thing I wish is they were open on Sunday. We tried to stop in again before we left but they were closed. Good job! Looking forward to next Whidbey Island trip as we will definitely stop in here again. read more
