I wish I could give half stars - I would rate 3.5. This deli stumps me a bit, so I'll have to come back and try again to break the tie. Whidbey has a limited selection of restaurants, so Pickles is one of the best sandwich options. Plenty of parking, and right next to The Bagel Factory. The decor is quirky and funny, but it's a humble and simple sandwich shop where you can order at the counter. The Philly was genuinely one of the best Phillies I've had in quite a while. The peppers and onions were excellent and cooked well, and the entire thing had so much flavor and not TOO much cheese! (Though it was soooo creamy! Yum!) I was going to order the smoked salmon panini, but they were out of salmon so I decided to try the chicken. However, the Chicken tomato basil panini was not a good sandwich, in my opinion. I would not recommend it at all. I have never EVER sent an item back to a kitchen, but today was that day. The balsamic was soaking through the bread so badly I could hardly eat it, and the flavor of the balsamic was too much, it almost made me sick. I would also not that I typically love an oil and balsamic drizzle on a sandwich, so this was unexpected. I genuinely couldn't get past it. I sent the sandwich back, and intended to order the Philly because my husband had it and it was nice. I didn't expect my money back - I fully intended to pay for the Philly AND the chicken sandwich - but after only two bites of the chicken sandwich, I thought the team would offer to just switch it out or at least apologize, but they acted almost offended, so it was a strange interaction overall. I also didn't love that their mop bucket sat out the entire time we were there, but maybe that's silly? The pickles were really nice. We tried the garlic and loved! The chips were also great, and I love their selection of local beer. All in all, check it out if you're in Whidbey and want a sandwich, just don't order the chicken tomato panini :)

This little deli is tucked away in a strip mall in an area you wouldn't expect a strip mall. I am not sure if it is normal but it was really smoky on the inside. Like they don't have enough ventilation. It is an odd layout and while clean, has that feel that it could use some TLC. I ordered a chicken and prosciutto panini and chicken enchilada soup. Both were really good. They didn't skimp on the prosciutto and the chicken was fresh tasting and overall, very good sandwich. Soup was thick and filling. If you want a quality deli sandwich this is worth the stop.

Forgot to take pictures of my food. But I can assure you it was absolutely delicious! On this visit I had a sandwich of pastrami, red peppers and pickled onions. Grilled with Swiss cheese on rye bread. And I also had a small side of the potato salad. Now, I believe I felt a certain way about the potato salad on my previous visit based on the mustard they use, but I can say that on this visit it was on point!!!! Absolutely one of the best potato salads I've ever had. Like perfectly seasoned and sauced to a creamy consistency. And the service is super friendly and welcoming. The ambiance is of a seasoned deli used to serving large volumes of people who are local and those like me, coming off the ferry for an island adventure. 100 percent worth every penny. Do it! Eat a sandwich from here. SYOY!

We wanted some pickles. We stood at the counter waiting to order for awhile before one of the 4 people working there finally acknowledged us. By that point only 1 of us was still willing to buy anything and we felt like a nuisance being there. We got a pickle from the barrel. It was okay, not cold and not as crunchy as I would prefer. It was a shame things went the way they did for us, a lady walking out said they have the best sandwiched in town, we may never know. ‍

This should be your first stop after driving off the ferry on Whidbey Island. And I have a very strong opinion about what you should order: the Greek Roast Beef with fresh lettuce, onion, marinated vegetables and feta ON A PITA. We only explored that option because they had run out of sandwich wraps, but I think that was one of those perfect accidents of fate because the pita made everything that much better. Don't be intimidated if you walk into a line that wraps around the restaurant, the staff are super friendly and they can spot a newcomer a mile away because they very kindly tell you there are menus and you might want to study it before you order. There are tables to sit and enjoy the food inside but there's also a couple of tables with umbrellas outside across the street in a corner of the parking lot that you can tell is designated for deli customers to eat outside. And there were customers comfortably enjoying the shade while they ate Also, if you order a drink you'll be given cups so you can serve yourself at the soda fountain. We ordered the fresh squeezed beet juice with a couple of cups of ice because it was a hot day. It came in a bottle and poured out a glorious deep magenta -- talk about vital phytonutrients. There's also a bit of a bar area because there are brews on tap; next to the brew list is a nice capture of Anthony Bourdain in shades holding a classic pose. We took our sandwiches to go...but honestly didn't get a few meters beyond our original parking spot because the intention to "just take a couple of bites and save the rest..." flew out the window after the first two bites. The taste experience was so good we didn't even bother pulling into another parking spot we just slowed the car down stopped and ate our sandwiches until they were gone. Something about the marinated vegetables, and the feta, and the fresh romaine lettuce made the Greek Roast Beef extraordinary. My friend and I are both very sharing kind of people so in hindsight it's very telling neither of us offered each other a bite! She just kept exclaiming how the artichoke was so delicious with the chicken and how she had never had banana peppers but she loved them in the sandwich... Sandwiches were about $16 each which felt pretty steep to be honest but in this case we got what we've paid for and we didn't regret it: and when you considered it was an hour drive on the highway before getting to the ferry, then a two hour ferry wait before the $13.30 to ride the ferry one way... That's saying something.

We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon to grab a sandwich for our friends wife and OMG the cookies here are so good! I seriously wish we had bought them all. We got a chocolate chip macadamia nut with coconut cookie and a peanut butter stuffed in between two chocolate chip cookies! Please ship to California because we can't stop thinking about them! We also got the pina colada shaved ice and i forgot what kind of berry smoothie my bf got. My bfs brother got a pickle and i forget what else they all got but no complaints from our group! Honestly this is really just a cookie post !

Best deli sandwich I've ever had, it's expensive but worth it for the good quality bread and meats. Workers were friendly as well.

I was not able to get one of the angled parking slots adjacent to the cafe, but found a 4 hour spot near their conference center and fire station down the street. They definitely take full advantage of the amazing waterway view on their multilevel terrace with various plantings and whimsical wood carved fixtures. The cafe has a variety of both outdoor and indoor seating. Welcoming counter service. There's breakfast and lunch menu items, baked goods, and coffee/tea service. I decided to hang out onsite with the warmed, tasty vanilla scone and well crafted, spring inspired 12oz mocha. A few folks were on laptops, rest were there for lunch and lively convo. It was also good to see upbeat camaraderie among the cafe staff. Always a treat to stop by an indie cafe that provides pleasant service, decent food/bev selections, seating for lingering, and an amazing view!

The only big downside for me is that there isn't any comfortable seating. This is definitely a place that you could come work, or talk with a friend. But, if you want to sit and read for a while, it might not be very comfortable. There are hard chairs and benches. Then there was one stuffed dining chair but it was not very comfortable. There is outside seating that has a nice atmosphere where you can't really see the street at all. We had iced lattes, which were pretty good. They have almond milk. Our drinks were made pretty quickly. There was one person that ordered ahead of us and we got our drinks in about 5 minutes.
