I say this because of the following reasons: 1. i walk in the store, see all these old people (grandma grandpa) and they were staring at me as if I don't belong here. 2. The ambience is a cafeteria for older people. and there is nothing wrong with it but the vibe was just so sad. Even the workers seemed like they don't want to be there, working like robots. I was craving a sandwich the other day, so I decided to give Picnic a try. Pick up was easy - they have a make shift drive through in the parking lot, so you don't even have to get out of the car. I ordered a Picnic Box Lunch with a Roast Beef Sandwich, Chips, Fruit Salad, pickle, and Chocolate Pecan Cookie. Overall, it was a fine meal, especially if you're literally taking it on a picnic, or ordering boxed lunches for some sort of luncheon or event. Other than that though, it was just a meriocre lunch. The sandwich was pretty basic, with a pile of roast beef in the center (that's a pet peeve of mine... Spread it out across the bread!). The bread was good though and tasted fresh. The shrimp salad sandwich was pretty good. The shrimp was plump and the celery was crispy. The sauce is very fluid and not a creamy sauce. The hoagie bread is a bit dry, which is understandable because the salad is so wet. The fruit cup had a variety of fruit in it. The chocolate chip and pecan cookie was pretty good in general. I prefer a more chewy cookie but it was crispy with chunks of chocolate and pecans. I tried a bite of the chewy chocolate and preferred that because it was like a moist brownie in cookie form. I hadn't tried the Deep River chips before. They're greasy, thick and full of thick black pepper (salt and pepper flavor). Each bag donates to charity, which is nice. The chicken salad looked good, so I decided to try it. It had good-sized chunks of chicken in it and wasn't too dry. I tried the Turkey sandwich too. Recently we got box lunches from Picnic several times over the course of three weeks. The box lunches were all ok, nothing spectacular. They definitely seem over priced for what you get. The bread was always a little dry. The chicken salad was very good, I'd get that again and again if I had to go back. The sun dried tomatoes in the chicken salad give it that little bit of extra punch. I had the ham and cheese on one of the days we ordered from Picnic and it was disappointing. The fruit salad side had way too much cheap melon in it. Melon is such a filled fruit. We liked that they delivered to Rice U, so that was a bonus. There was just nothing that made me want to go there again after trying them 3 times throughout our 3 weeks. From the 6 vendors we've used for boxed lunches the salad is always a miserable afterthought. Today we had Picnic cater lunch and it was the first time we had salads from them and I was highly impressed. Dare I say that, for salads, this is one of the best places for a boxed lunch. I had the chef salad with spicy ranch. The first thing I noticed was how lush the greens were. Plentiful, healthy greens which look like they were picked and place by God himself. The meats were thick cut and juicy, the chicken was well seasoned and moist. The cheese was funky and pungent like the stuff on the block. That's unheard of! But the tomatoes really put me over the edge because they tasted like, get this, they tasted like tomatoes! I've gotten so used to the gas ripen, cardboard variety they sell at the grocery store I didn't remember how good a perfectly ripe tomato could be. I've also tried their sandwich box lunches and they too are definitely on the higher end of quality. Just a step below Central Market. My only complain is the hockey puck, I mean cookie. Its literally hard as rock! But all in all, for the salad option, the boxed lunch from Picnic is definitely in the top 3! read more

This is walking distance to our home, and is a pretty cute little location, but I was disappointed by our lunch. They have a good variety of options, good vegetarian options, too, but the descriptions make everything seem way better than they really are. My boyfriend got a shrimp salad sandwhich box and the sandwhich was basically all celery and mayo, no shrimp. However, nothing really stands out for an in-person visit. I had the chicken salad sandwich and thought it was decidedly average. Sandwiches are pretty vanilla; this isn't some deli where they make wacky combinations or try to put 2 lbs of meat on the sandwich. They have Zapp's chips too which is a plus for me (go Voodoo baby). The peanut butter cookie was on the dry side of the dry/gooey cookie matrix. For another couple of dollars, I got a Hibiscus mint tea that was quite refreshing. In addition to food, there are some food products for sale in the back as well as some pastries and cookies available at the front counter. Several families in the store when I went. Parking is ample in the private lot. For me, this will be a nice place to revisit for nearby catering needs or a light lunch, but not something on my short list or regular lunch rotation. read more

His stand-up is on Spotify and elsewhere so go hunt it down. Well as far as sandwich meats go, I want ALL THE HAM from Picnic. $6.25 for the sandwich only or pick up a pickle, fruit, chips, and cookie for $9.50. If you go Full Lunchbox (no, not one of Jay's flirty pet nicknames for Silent Bob) then that is quite a lot of food clocking in at under $10. This is not a weak sandwich, this sandwich lifts bro. It will take off its' tank-top and show you right meow. The ham sandwich comes loaded down with ham slices, a large slice of swiss cheese (way more than Wendy/fast food ideas on what a slice of cheese looks like,) basil mayo, and dijon mustard on sourdough. The ham is juicy and tasty, this does not taste like it came out of a $2.99 package at the supermarket. There is a lot of ham, so much ham. The basil mayo really stands out as being fantastic - and I don't even like regular mayo as much as Shania Twain - but this mayo is so good if you filled up a bathtub with it I would get in and splash around in it for a bit. Considering how pleasing the mayo is, the dijon mustard was like the unfortunate-looking friend you bring to bars simply to make you look better in comparison when s/he stands next to you. I could have lived without the mustard and taken 2x mayo. The only mildly disappointing touch to the sandwich was the pathetic looking tiny piece of lettuce. It seemed so half-hearted like yeah, here's a tiny splash of green just cos. The sourdough bread more than made up for it. It was sweet mana baked into the fluffy but edible pillows of the gods high up in the bakery of Mount Olympus. But my biggest gripe here (and it's a big ol' lady of a complaint) is with the fruit cup because the fruit they picked could kill me, and I feel like that was intentional to pick evil fruit like that to go into a fruit cup. But the pickle was segregated far away from the fruit cup in its own little pickle sleeve, so the pickle made up for the fruit blasphemy in the cup of doom. The chips were just the standard Lays Plain Jane flavor. Which I suppose will do the trick if you are starving in the middle of a desert. But having just found out about the Sriracha flavored limited edition Lays chips at Randalls Midtown I was mid wet dream thinking about them, and so the Plain Jane flavor really did not blow up my skirt that much. Picnic is a decent lunch option. It's not break the bank expensive for a lunch, and at least you get your money's worth of ham. The food was overpriced (seriously, I had sticker shock when I walked in), there just isn't enough seating considering how many people come through here, and there was just a lot of wasted space. I got the tuna sandwich based on the recommendation of the guy taking my order. Don't get me wrong, it was good, though nothing spectacular. The white bread was white bread and $8 for a sandwich just hurts. I got the lunch special which included a tiny fruit salad (not worth mentioning), an enormous cookie and I got a drink. It is hard to expound on the place since there just wasn't anything that stood out. The guy that took the order was on top of his game with great customer service, personality, and he was fast both behind the counter and clearing the tables. The other staff I encountered weren't nearly as friendly and tiptoeing on rudeness. In the box lunch there is a fresh fruit cup with mint (nice touch), chips, a cookie and a sandwich. Honestly, we break the box down into 2 different meals. It's a lot of food. My favorites are the tuna and ham and cheese, but I suppose I am normally a sandwich purist. The sandwiches will not wow you with cheap thrills like truffle oil or arugula, it's just a straight up great quality meat, cheese on some amazing homemade bread. Huge fan of their peanut butter cookies. But my favorite part? Is their bread. Their bread is seriously the best sandwich bread money can buy. The ingredients are fresh, the desserts are pretty good, and the interior and concept are cute and kitschy without being over the top. Here's where I have a problem. The food: You get to choose the stuffing for your sandwich, however in a bakery I expect to have the daily bread as an option. White and wheat are just too boring for $8. The meat options are a little on the cheap side, as well. The interior: The tables are oftentimes not wiped down. I understand that it can get busy, but there are a lot of messy people out there. Again, $8 is just too much to eat a mediocre sandwich on a picnic table slightly reminiscent of a Jr high cafeteria. Picnic makes some of the best fresh bread I've had in Houston, especially when you factor in creative flavors like raisin pecan, rosemary sage, and jalapeno cheese. I ordered the char-grilled veggie sandwich, which claims to have "zucchini, portabella mushrooms, red bell peppers, goat cheese, and avocado/basil mayo on a baguette with lettuce and tomato." What I got was a slightly stale baguette with a freezing-cold scoop of chopped roasted veggies along with a lettuce leaf and an anemic tomato slice. If goat cheese and avocado/basil mayo were involved, I couldn't tell. In addition to lacking flavor, the sandwich was completely impossible to eat due to the frigid temperature and the minced vegetables constantly dropping out of the baguette. My group in the medical center uses Picnic all the time to cater meetings. The catering managers are extremely helpful and accommodating. We once had a huge mix up with another group who was supposed to cater our 50 person meeting. We called Picnic frantically, and the man who helped us was wonderful and was able to accommodate our last minute request. He even delivered everything himself! He was on time, a little early actually, which I thought was extremely professional (and very different from the other group we were using)! There are several boxes lunch options for you to choose from, and they are very reasonably priced. I usually order a mix of sandwiches and salads, and the salads tend to be more popular in the group of doctors and hospital staff that I order for and the meetings I attend. Each boxed sandwich comes with a bag of chips, a slice of pickle, a container of fruit, and a cookie. Boxed salads come with a roll, container of fruit, and a cookie, and dressing on the side. Never fails. Hands down the most delicious chicken salad sandwich! They have great box lunches as everyone has mentioned that includes: - the sandwich (big enough that could sort of be split into two portions) - a fruit cup - a sour pickles slice - a cookie of your choosing, pecan choco chip, PB, and others - condiments and utensils I mean, who could resist when it serves to fulfill your daily servings of all the goodies. They have the perfect little boxed lunches, the goodies wrapped delicately in colored tissue. Having tried several sandwiches my favorite by mile is the egg salad. The bread is fresh and soft with a chewy crust served with the perfect amount of egg salad, with olives mind you, and lettuce; a pickle spear, chips, fruit and a cookie accompany your lunch. I really don't get this place at all. As you walk in, you'll spot all these nice looking fresh breads. Would you like one of those on your sandwich? No, you're getting white. And you're getting Mayo on that white bread with a generous potion of meat slopped in the center with inches of plain Mayo bread surrounding. A single slice of cheese cut thin enough to read through will round out what must be the laziest sandwich. Pretty it ain't. You get chips with your sandwich so please read the tiny note with the list on the case in front of you because it isn't on the menu. I think the worst part is the food isn't bad. Whenever I think of the West University area of Houston, I usually think of quirkiness and uniqueness not usually possessed in the suburban areas. Some businesses in this area can have excessive amounts of quirkiness and uniqueness that, let's just say, can be "overwhelming". However, when I happened to be in the museum district and stumbled upon going to Picnic for lunch, I discovered this restaurant was "overwhelmingly simple". The restaurant has the refreshing approach of taking you back to the communal experience of eating with people at a picnic. While there is a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts, the core item in the menu is "the basket". When your order a "basket" you choose a sandwich, bag of chips, and a homemade cookie. The menu is simple, but the items are classics with modern twists, including a chicken salad with sun-dried tomatoes and basil, an egg salad with olives, and a pork tenderloin sandwich with basil mayonnaise. The experience is completed by eating your meal at the long, wooden tables with benches. Enjoying my meal at the "picnic table" made me feel like an outdoor picnic was transported indoors. The simplicity in the nostalgia of the experience is something that will make me a return customer. read more
