My family and I got a quick coffee and breakfast here, sampling many of the pastries and a couple of the drinks. Three got mochas, while I got a honey lavender latte. We all ordered different milks -- whole, skim, coconut, and oat -- and they were able to accommodate all of us! I really liked my iced latte, which was rich without being overly floral or sweet. The pastries were also a hit, including the lemon poppy muffin, cherry turnover, chocolate croissant, and the spinach, mushroom, and cheese danish. The outside of this coffee shop and apothecary doesn't exactly have curb appeal, but the inside is bright, clean, and stylish, combining sleek lines with softer botanical elements to create a welcoming space. The barista was... indifferent at best, borderline unfriendly at worst. We did ask a couple questions that seemed to irritate her, but we were the only people in there, so we weren't holding up a line or anything. After having lunch at Loro in Kirby, I had some time to kill before some plans I had later that day. I hopped on the trust Yelp app to find a coffee shop nearby. Grinder's Coffee Bar came up and it was right across the street so I made my way over. I arrived around 1 p.m. on a Wednesday. I parked in their small complimentary lot and made my way inside. Ambiance (3.5/5): Grinder's is basically two spots in one. When you walk in, there's a small counter where you place your order. And a handful of seats. From there, you wan walk into a more spacious second room that houses a CBD shop. And more seating along with the bathroom. I sat at a couch in the CBD area. While weed isn't my thing, if you're into both weed and coffee, that makes for a nice one-two punch for you. There isn't a ton of seating, less so than most coffee shops. Luckily, since it was a weekday, I didn't have any trouble. I wonder if that's different on the weekends. They also have free WiFi if you'd like to linger and work or study. Service (2.5/5): The menu is a little confusing because they have a menu on the counter and a menu on the wall with different items. I didn't see that there was a menu on the counter until I was about to place an order. They also have some beverages in a cooler that aren't on either menu. Not the best set up. Service wasn't terribly friendly either. Food (N/A): Since I just had lunch prior, no food for me. They have a small, but appetizing number of pastries and small bites for sale if you get the munchies (pun intended). Drinks (3.5/5): I'm not a coffee drinker so take this with a grain of salt. When I go to a coffee shop, I like coffee shops that still have a nice selection of teas and juices. Grinder's has a small number of teas that can be made either hot or iced. I went with one, iced, and sweetened with agave (for a surcharge). I liked it and the price was reasonable. They also had a mocktail of sorts that was available on their seasonal menu, although like most mocktails, overpriced. I ordered a 12 ounce latte with almond milk and extra cinnamon powder. You get to pick what roast you would like today they had a medium roast blend or a single roast light. I had heard good things about their matcha and I got the honey lavender matcha to try. The matcha quality was fine in my opinion, however, there was too much honey and not enough lavender flavor for my liking. Overall, my drink was okay. It's next to Smoothie King off of Kirby Dr. This was the first time we had been and we each ordered a drink and food item. Parking: Parking is very limited here. They have 3 spots in front of the store and a couple of spots on the side of the store so be cautious of that when trying to park here. There seems to be parking along the side street near the store. Ambiance: Grinder is connected to The CBD Apothecary so some of their coffees and drinks have options to add CBD. The inside is nice and modern. There are 3 small tables inside and a small bar area so seating is limited here. The CBD store has its own bar area which I think you can sit at if you order a drink from Grinders. Drinks: my girlfriend got an iced vanilla latte and I got the Strawberry Kiss which is a strawberry matcha drink. My girlfriend said her drink was good but not the best she's had. My matcha drink was also good and had good matcha flavor but not the best matcha drink I've had. I did see them preparing the matcha in the traditional whisking method so I appreciated that! Food: we got a bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast taco and a sausage and egg empanada. Both food items were good but we liked the empanada better. I was delighted by a marshmallow latte topped with a toasted bite. The process was smooth and the baristas skills showed. Additionally the pastries/cookies were a chocolaty delight. The snickerdoodle was a chunky spiced goodness as the chocolate based cookie with nuts was great. Also next door or rather an open doorway away is a convenient CBD shop...which means it's an option on their drink menu as well. We didn't partake but for anyone interested it's ideal. I was recommended Grinders by a friend who said their matcha was the best in town. I decided to give it a shot. The parking was tight and tricky (especially to pull out) when I arrived, they unfortunately let me know ahead of time that they unfortunately were out of matcha. The CBD store connected is associated with Wild. Which I believe it's also has its own coffee chain, and wish they were more upfront of their association with it. I will definitely be making this my late night work spot for now on. It's super chill and stays open 'til 9pm!!! Coffee shops back at home would never!! Plus it's a place not only where you can get coffee but you can add CBD into your coffee which is like a bonus!! The place was super zen too even being decorated for spooky season. The plants and lighting were perfect. Also, don't be fooled by the two tables in the front by the counter. There are additional seating options outside and through the opening to the left where the restrooms are also located. Tonight I ordered a White Widow hot with half the sweetness and CBD added (which is an additional cost). I love that they didn't mind customers asking the price of the latte with or without it. Who would've thought that West U would be the home for CBD and coffee? Grinder's has brought a unique pairing to the area and is one of the only establishments in the entire city to offer it. Coffee buzz suddenly has a new meaning. There are two entities here, which is a legitimate CBD store and a coffee shop. The latter is what most people are here for and is small, but quaint. The WiFI is strong and there are only a handful of areas to sit. Most folks are in takeout mode, which is understandable especially given the limited parking situation. I tend to enjoy their cold brew ($4), which is potent and very tasty. The latte ($4) and the cappuccino ($5) are also quality additions to their menu. I think for most first time visitors, the CBD coffee concoctions are the main draw. They'll be the most expensive lattes on the menu, but I think the golden goat (tumeric + honey + 20mg CBD) and the white widow (oat milk, brown sugar, white mocha) are the ones that I enjoyed the most. Customer service is pretty good and they have a limited selection of daily pastries to go along with the drinks. It's super cute inside (room for 3 two top tables) and 2 two top tables outside (but it's a busy street so probably wouldn't sit out there unless I have to. It's connected to a dispensary so there's also more open space on that side. The main reason I came back is because I'm obsessed with the Strawberry Kiss Matcha. Holy moly it's good. The menu had a good selection of drinks to choose from, and I really enjoyed the holiday menu! Got a gingerbread latte and asked them if it came sweet or not.
