The Pie Box has quietly become one of those places we just build into the drive when we're anywhere near the area. Not a spontaneous decision anymore. It's planned. It's simple. You go for pie. And they deliver. We've stopped here more times than I can count, and I've yet to have a bad slice. Not one. That kind of consistency is rare, especially for something like pie where it's easy to cut corners. They don't. My go-to is the bourbon pecan. Always has been. It's rich without being overbearing, just the right balance of sweet with a little depth to it. It actually tastes like someone cared when they made it. Close second is the lemon meringue, which goes the complete opposite direction. Bright, sharp, light, and clean. Between the two, you've got both ends of the spectrum covered. The place itself is exactly what you want it to be. No pretense, no overthinking. You walk in, you look at the pies, you make a decision, and you're already halfway happy before you even take a bite. Prices are a bit on the higher side, no question. You notice it. But then you eat the pie and it makes sense. This isn't grocery store dessert dressed up to look homemade. It's the real thing, and it tastes like it. What I like most is that it doesn't try to be anything else. No gimmicks, no distractions. Just really good pie, done the same way every time. After finishing a hike on the Black Canyon Trail, a friend recommended we check this place out. Since I love supporting local businesses, we stopped in with our group. It is located right adjacent to the main cafe, and we were pleasantly surprised by the huge variety of pies! My friend tried the key lime pie and I went with the coconut pie. Both were baked to absolute perfection, the crust was to perfection and the fillings weren't overly sweet. Aside from the great desserts, the property has a really cool outdoor space to stroll around with a mini waterfall feature. My only call out is regarding their half-pie policy. We wanted to order a custom half-pie of cherry, but they only allow half-pies from a limited selection of pre-displayed flavors. It feels like something that should be easily customizable, and I really wish the cashier had at least tried to check for us when we requested it. The service here was very kind and welcoming. I really appreciate how even though they were extremely busy they didn't rush us out or make us feel like a burden. The place was packed and even though they were out of several of their pie flavors they were working hard to get more out. Date of visit: June 7, 2026 This was a recommendation from our tour guide with Arizona Food Tours when she found out that mom was a big fan of strawberry rhubarb. We had actually driven right by this on our way down to Phoenix but didn't think much of it. It's not much to look at and the staff was a little less "country friendly" than "standard polite," but mom was able to snag a half a strawberry rhubarb pie and some of their jam for a decent price. Really appreciated the half a pie situation as she likely would have left me with the leftover pie and that just would not do. Always a must stop by spot on the way home from flagstaff. The pies here are made fresh daily and are so good. It's nice you can choose between slices, halves and whole pies so you can either grab a full one or try a few slices of different flavors. We always make a stop at Rock Springs on our way back from Flagstaff or Sedona. It has become a tradition for our family and honestly, we are obsessed with their pies. The Key Lime Pie is one of our absolute favorites and the Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie is incredible too. Both are worth the drive alone. For years we would squeeze into the main building just to grab a pie to go, so the Pie Box is such a great addition. Now it's quick and easy to just grab your pie, pay, and head out. Every once in a while we'll grab a slice and let the kids sit and eat there, but most of the time we take home a whole pie because they're just that good. Rock Springs is an Arizona staple. What an awesome and weird spot for cream pies in the middle of nowhere. There is a gas station, restaurant, small gift shop and pie. (There is also an antique shop closed Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday) Pies ran about 6.95 each which seems high but very well done. We got key lime and coconut cream and we devoured the slices on site in the small air conditioned area. There is a larger outside seating area. Restrooms at the gas station are a better choice than the portapotty outside. If you need sugar and a leg stretch perfect spot. read more

The Pie Box is a hidden gem located in Black Canyon. The parking lot is a bit tight, so be prepared for that. There is plenty of seating inside and there are some tables outside with a great view. The service was great, the cashier was extremely nice. The Pie Box offers a lot of selections from cream pies to crumble. I got a slice of the Coconut Cream Pie, it was well balanced. It wasn't too sweet and even though it was a cream pie it wasn't heavy at all. The coconut taste was prominent and there was toasted coconut pieces throughout the pie. If you are a coconut lover you will love this pie, I sure did! The other people in my group got a slice of the apple crumble and the key lime pie and I got to try both. The apple crumble was delicious, I am not usually into crumbles but this one had a good ratio of crumble to apple filling. A wide spot in the middle of nowhere with rustic charm...traveling through the area and was hoping to get several pieces of pie of different flavors, but due to Thanksgiving week they only sell whole pies. The list of pie flavors is a page long but by 4pm there wasn't much to choose from and that's understandable. So we ended up with a rhubarb pie for $29. Most other folks bought 2 or 3 pies. It's not a restaurant. It's a manufacturer of pies. It's quite an impressive operation. Staff is neither friendly or helpful, we had to figure things out by ourselves. The menu is organized by most popular pie - we got the Mountain Man and the Chicken Pot Pie for savory and the Apple Dulce de Leche and Pecan Pie for sweet. Have had a hankering for pie and zero energy to make my own this time. So we took a trip to this raved about place. It's cute but very overpriced for what you get. Most everything is a crumble top, only one double crust. There is more crumble top than there is filling and the crumble top was mostly just flour with a touch of sugar and probably shortening not even butter. Was very disappointed when we got it home and it was mostly crumble, especially after all the hype. The staff at the pie shop weren't all that friendly or helpful. 3 stars for the large variety and the quaint outdoor area. It was 106° outside and the pie box was air-conditioned and very peaceful, a great place to just enjoy a slice and relax. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and made my visit to this historical location that much more enjoyable. Rock Springs was established in 1918 and has a pioneering history to it that is very interesting. More things to do here than just eat pie, a great stop along highway 17 on a road trip. read more

I have seen this place grown so much and absolutely love to see it! I used to go to Hogs N Heat back in the 90's and the pies were served out of the rock springs cafe. I bought 3 pies this week. 2 cherry pies had very little cherries and all crumbs. The blueberry I chose no crumbs but the crust was soggy. The biggest disappointment was when the customer in front of me told them he called and told them his previous pie was mismarked blueberry and was blackberry which he is allergic to. Told to come back and would be refunded. They charged him full price on his blueberry pie that he drove 2 hours back for. What terrible customer service. I wanted to respond then but trust me I'll never buy another pie from them. read more

Maybe 10 years ago or so their pie's were amazing, I would stop there a get the pecan pie very delicious, then it started going down hill and finally ordered a chocolate pie and when I got home had a piece and told the wife at that moment we can get a better pie from Walmart, never again. I'm certain, however, that this time will be the last time. I think it's also worth mentioning that every single thing sold at this tourist trap is over priced...all the way from their $10.00+ dry cinnamon rolls to their $4.39 gal gas, which I just paid $3.09 for in Cottonwood less than an hour ago.
