I brought our greyhound in after hours about 9:30pm after escalating pain and weakness in her legs after a big afternoon run in the park. We were lucky that it wasn't too busy. They checked me in quickly and professionally and I like that you can wait in your car - they'll come and get you when they are ready. We had about a twenty minute wait before being brought in. The technician and doctor were both compassionate and helpful. The service was a bit slow, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of care we received afterhours - as it does seem that many places have a hard time finding quality staff for late night shifts. She was diagnosed with a slipped disc in her neck - sent home with anti-inflammatory and pain meds - and she is on the mend. If you can you might call ahead and ask about wait time and choose between hospitals, because your experience will likely depend on volume at the time. read more

Receptionist told me my cat wasn't severe enough to be seen. We were turned away without any sort of clinical assessment/triage. No medical personnel spoke with me or looked at my cat. There was no verbal assessment on the phone. My cats symptoms were lethargy, not eating/drinking x2 days, a walnut sized abscess on his anal gland. She heard "anal gland" and said "Gland expressions aren't an emergency, we see critical patients here". This cat has a history of struvite crystals and constipation (nearly ostipation). I usually use Rocky Hill Animal Hospital for emergency visits, but they refer to Pieper-Olson now. The dangerous practices of the receptionist is why I'm writing this review. There are not many 24 hour emergency veterinarians in general, so my options are limited. What am I supposed to do when I have a sick cat and am told to leave? I would be less anxious if a clinical staff member was able to triage (even on the phone) to determine if my cat will live through the night. Obviously, I would pay for this assessment. It's absolutely cruel to refuse care to a sick animal on the basis that your receptionist feels the acuity isn't emergent enough. I would have waited, knowing that staffing is an issue these days. I couldn't be more disappointed and will do my best to ensure my family, friends, and anyone reading this review steer clear of this facility. If your regular vet is unavailable, please use a different Emergency Vet. Update: I went to Plainville Veterinary urgent and WellCare. My cat is ostipated and being admitted to West Hartford VCA. Update 2: Thank you for looking into this Jesse. As per my original complaint, the receptionist was unable/unwilling to ask questions about the state of my cat. There was no triage, period. Driving around the state of CT is an unhelpful and unreasonable suggestion, as I was in your parking lot. I explained the situation as it happened, you can use this information to continue to improve and educate your staff or you can continue refusing patients. That's up to you entirely. While the care was fine, and my dog was seen (11 hours after we first got there), I cannot in good faith give this place more than 2 stars. My aunts dog Pumpkin died in this places parking lot. Pumpkin was 6 years old and was having a reaction. She waited in the parking lot for 70 minutes while Pumpkin slowly died in pain... they said they would see her ASAP and to not go to the other vet 40 miles away. To heat my aunts pain and her crying, making an owner suffer like that. Shame on you. Breanna at the receptionist desk was the women who spoke to my aunt and lied saying not to go to another place. Pumpkin is dead and gone because of this places incompetence. Pumpkin was the best dog, so funny and sweet, strong! She Survived a raccoon attack but couldn't survive waiting 70 minutes at the piper vet clinic parking lot gasping for air unable to move... please consider upping your staff so these horrific incidences don't occur to other family's. They always take good care of our babies :) Sometimes you will get a bit of attitude or a long wait when you call on the phone to make an appointment or with a question. I try not to let that bother me too much, as most who work there are personable when you go in. Most importantly, the vets are wonderful!! We try to always see Dr. Fayette, as she is great with our dog and cat. But we have gone for emergency visits and have seen other doctors, who are also caring and sweet with the animals. They have long weekday hours and are also open on the weekends. And hopefully we never need it, but it is nice to have a 24 hour animal hospital so close to home and attached to our normal vet's office. We have also used the boarding and grooming services in the past, with no compaints. read more

After a day of playing outside with the family, my little Pumpkin started to twitch and lose control of her back legs, suddenly. Her gums were very pale. It was 10:00 p.m. so I got in the car right away and headed to Pieper, Middletown. On the way, I called to let them know we were coming and to ask if they were available to see my dog asap, as she seemed to be in very rough shape. They told me they were busy, so I said I would head to Central, instead. The receptionist said Pieper would triage my dog as soon as I arrived in case she was critically ill. Come ahead. No one saw Pumpkin for 70 minutes, despite my pleas every 15 minutes of the wait, in our car, outside. During this time I called Central and they said they were not busy, but they were forty minutes away. And, every time I called the front desk at Pieper they said just 15 more minutes and we would see the vet. We stayed. Pumpkin was unresponsive when she finally reached triage around 11:30. They admitted her and said they would give her supportive care until her turn with the doctor came. Sadly, she did not survive. I received a call at 3:00 a.m. that Pumpkin had passed. They did not know why. Her heart just stopped. The vet never spoke to me again. I picked up Pumpkin, today and asked for her records. They said they'd send them. They have not. I am heartbroken and all I got was a receipt for a $2,000 bill. Pieper has given my pets wonderful care in the past, but this one time was a fatal mistake for my little pumpkin, only six years old. I guess they were understaffed, but why not send me elsewhere where Pumpkin could get the urgent care she needed? read more

I'm perplexed....brought my dog in due to being lethargic and not really himself. The wait wasn't long but the doctor had zero personality. He had a fever but they didn't send me with antibiotics and thought Lyme but didn't test for Lyme. What did I spend $300 on? Needless to say he's gotten worse and is having difficulty walking. Now we are at our regular vet trying to figure it all out. Update: Our Vet gave our dog antibiotics and less the 24 hours later he is less lethargic, temp has gone down, he's eating and drinking a little more, his tail is up and he's walking normal again. I would not recommend this hospital to anyone that loves their pet! If it is an emergency, keep your pet at home until you can take them to your regular vet. I waited 6.5 hours to get my pet back with no answers. I was told that bloodwork would not detect pancreatic problems and that I need to do X-rays. They did not have an ultrasound sound machine on site. I was also told that if I needed to board my pet that it would cost me thousands and thousands of dollars. I said that I wanted my pet back right now! It took them 2.5 hours to give me him and a bill for almost $500. He went to a reputable vet the next day. This has taken me weeks to write this review. I am still mourning the loss of my fur babies Akiiki and Ciba. Both had different health issues. They were both misdiagnosed and both past away a month apart. Please do not trust this place. They let my Akiiki suffer in pain for over 10 hours before they even took a look at him. I called every 2 hours begging them to put him on pain meds. This was so unfair for the end of his life to suffer. I finally received a call from the doctor, 10 hours later, telling me he is in extreme pain and they would be starting him on pain meds immediately. We had to put him down 5 hours later on 4/21/22. After months of going to his doc here at Piepers and expressing all my concerns they totally ignored all his symptoms and misdiagnosed him. Ciba wasn't feeling well for a few weeks. I brought her to her Doctor at Pieper. I explained she was drinking a ton of water and urinating alot and also was breathing heavy. They told me they would run blood work and get a urine sample and would call me within a few days with the results. They took the blood work and never got the urine sample for the test, they said they didn't want to stress her out. I never heard back from them on the blood work for 4 days and I finally called. In the meantime, Ciba's breathing was worse. When I talked to her doctor I explained her breathing was worse and still drinking and urinating a ton. I was told to increase her thyroid meds. By Friday that week she wasn't doing well. I called emergency and was told there was a 10 hour wait. I explained her symptoms and was told I still had to wait 10 hours. I called 2 other emergency vets and was told they are at capacity. I then called her Doctot at 8:00 am Saturday morning and was told to bring her in at 11:30, my husband brought her becasue I had work. Her doctor checked her out and said she seemed fine. He left there at 12:30 pm and she died at 3:30 pm the same day, on 5/21/2022. I have to say the emergency department empkoyees are beyond rude and heartless. Please do not bring your animals here. They are liars and don't know what they are doing and all they care about is the money. Protect your fur babies. Go to Central Vet Emergency in North Haven. I wish I had, my Ciba would probably be here with us today. Remember, just because your vet is nice doesn't mean they are a good vet. Always trust your instincts. We all know our fur babies better than anyone. Keep them safe and healthy. Keep them away from places like this. I will miss you forever Akiiki and Ciba Mommy is so sorry your lives ended this way, in pain and suffering. I will forever blame myself for trusting people that didn't know what they were doing. Our dog was extremely sick when we arrived, having come from another facility where they could not do the necessary surgery. We brought all the reports, blood work and x rays but were told that the dog would require another evaluation - more expense but more importantly loss of precious time. The obvious answer came back that the dog required emergency surgery. Our only point of contact was the clerk who said that we needed to put around $8,000 to proceed. We could not talk to the ER vet and certainly not to the surgeon. We were told that once the money is paid the surgeon and team come in and perform the surgery regardless of whether it might be futile. No discussion about likelihood of success. This is a cruel and irresponsible process to potentially put animals through needles pain and put owners through huge expense. Other Yelp reviews document putting owners through a guilt trip. That was not done to us. I am giving 2 stars because the surgery was successful but will be looking at alternatives in the future. read more

Had a great experience with another vet in year 1 & 1/2 but she left. The new vet I have seen immediately suggested $800 tooth cleaning for my then 3 year old dog and when I brought him in with diarrhea and vomiting Tuesday, she was quick to diagnose he had a foreign substance in his stomach and would need either endoscopy or surgery to remove it. As much as I assured her he has never eaten anything other than his food in the 2.5 years I have owned him, she was ready to rush him into surgery. Because of my hesitation, she finally offered to keep him for a few hours, and give him another xray, right before the surgeon was ready for him when the surgeon completed all the regularly scheduled surgeries. I went for the wait option. At about 4 I receive a call from the surgeon saying the regular vet has gone for the day, and she is taking over. The surgeon believes the dog has colitis or irritable bowel, and does not need surgery. She sent the dog home with an antibiotic, a probiotic, and a special gastric issue dog food. I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THE GUY PROBABLY NEEDED AN ANTIBIOTIC FOR SOME KIND OF INFLAMATION - that's why I brought him into the vet. So, we return Tues. pm - he eats heartily, goes to bed, and no diarrhea or vomiting all night. Wed. a.m. - he is starving - eats 1 can of the food and around noon he went out, and I could see that his stools were on the lose side; however, no vomiting, voracious appetite. Thurs even better. This is the dog that doc 1 was recommending 1-ultra-sound & endoscopy for $2000 to remove the foreign substance or 2- surgery $3000 to remove the foreign substance - no foreign substance came out in his feces. I believe the surgeon was correct in that there was nothing foreign there and he simply had a gastric inflammation. I would not be writing this review yet, but I am because more than 24 hours ago I was sent a survey to rate my dog's care, where I clearly expressed my concerns. It appears to me that no one really looks at that survery or takes it seriously because I was not contacted. Then when I called customer service after 48 hours later than this debacle, I reached a kind young man who said he would forward me to the director's line. That he was doing dental cleaning, but would get back to me. That was around 11a.m. I never heard from that director all day. I know I have not been waiting exorbitantly long; however, I do know as an administrator handling complaints of this serious of a nature, I never let it go this long. Bottom line I ended up paying $777.00 for a misdiagnosis that could have landed my dog in a wasted surgery that he did not need. I cannot express how disappointed and upsetting the care, or lack thereof, that we received last night at Pieper. My dog had abdominal surgery on Wednesday at that location. Last night she began actively bleeding from her incision, soaking through tissues and gauze, while developing a horrible sounding cough. I called on our way and after 35 minutes of being on hold told them the situation and that we were on our way. Upon arrival, the staff showed no sense of urgency and we were made to wait in the car for a half hour and then brought to an exam room where we waited for another 2 hours. I was on the floor applying pressure to the wound while she was still actively bleeding. I called for someone to come in twice. The first said she would speak to the doctor and never came back, the second came in and I was told 2 vets were with a sedated dog and we had to wait and Roxy was "not going to die soon". I understand it was busy, but I don't understand why a vet tech or nurse couldn't have tended to her and the wound and ensure she was stable. After realizing that Roxy was not going to get the care she needed, we left and went to Central in North Haven where she was evaluated by a nurse and a vet within 45 minutes. She had an overnight stay and is having further testing. They tried to reach Pieper for records but could not get through. read more

I thought my cat had a UTI and I brought him down . I couldn't get into my vet and it was a Friday. The lady was nice on the phone . We go and stay in the parking lot while they are assessing our cat. They call me on the phone and tell me he has a urine blockage and start telling me all the things that need to be done or else he will die within hours. They go on to tell me the bill will start at 5000 dollars!!!! Basically , it's 5000 or your cat dies. My daughter and I are crying in the car and don't know what to do? I don't have that kind of money ? The cats so young. I called Bolton animal hospital they took him right away when I explained the situation . Bolton was full but they made time and they unblocked him and their cost started at 1800. If Bolton didn't take us , I would have had to put down my cat. Drive anywhere , go to mass if you have to before you go here. They will basically give you a crazy estimate when they know your desperate and your backs against the wall. read more

If I could I would give them a ZERO ! I went there for a consult regarding an ACL tear.the consult visit charge was 300 to tell me what I already new. My dog also had a broken nail at the time and the vet mentioned it but didn't even take two minutes to cut it or have her technician do so. The vet examined my dog and then left the room A tech came back and handed us the estimate: $6000 !!! No body even discussed this with us nor were they concerned that we might have that kind of money. AND you'd think that after giving us a $6000 estimate and charging us $300 to examine the dog, they would have cut his broken nail...... They do NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR ANIMAL. They care about money. To continue I picked up my dog from Pieper after she was in their ER for 3.5 days. I picked her up at 1635 in the afternoon and was appalled that they thought she was ok to go home. She was coughing and absolutely sicker than when she had gone in. I was assured she just had a cold and would be fine. After a horrible night, I rushed her to another emergency vet early the next morning. She was immediately put on oxygen with respiratory failure and she was euthanized there with severe pneumonia and fluid in the lungs and abdomen. Super disappointed! I've heard wonderful things about this hospital but when my dog truly needed medical attention they provided false information on wait time. I was told an hour wait and 3 hours later (after telling the staff I had a young child and it would be helpful to know what my expected wait time is) I completely understand emergency's happen but being transparent on actual wait times would be a good business practice. I highly recommend Bolton emergency vet! They are honest, stellar communication and empathy for families with young children. I started going to Pieper Olson approximately 10 years ago. I had been bringing my mini schnauzer to a vet near my West Hartford home. I was given a diagnosis of jaw cancer by this vet and told pain management was the only option. I brought my dog to Pieper Olson for a second opinion. Dr. Albin was extremely knowledgeable and thorough. He patiently explained what could be done. After successful extraction of many teeth and medication for an extremely severe infection, my dog made a complete recovery. In an emergency or for advanced treatment it's one of the very few animal hospitals in the area offering this caliber of care. So for that, they're great. For follow up care, there are VERY long wait times just to speak to somebody who can "reach out" to a doctor. If they need to phone in a prescription to a local pharmacy it's been my experience that they do not act promptly. This was the worst experience I have ever had at a vet. We arrived at around 12:15 yesterday and the first thing they told us was it shouldn't be long and that my dog was dramatic about not being able to walk. We're from New London so it was a 40 minute drive. We stayed in our vehicle for 4 1/2 hours before we called just to check on our dog when they told us they hadn't even seen him yet and that he had been in a crate the entire 4 1/2 hours. We waited another 2 hours before going in and asking if he had been seen because we would rather him be waiting with us instead of being stuck in a crate scared and in pain. They told us they had not seen him and that we could not take him because we would have to check him in all over again. They told us they didn't know when they would get to him and that we should go home and have our phones on. Mind you this is about 6 1/2 hours later that they're telling us this. We went home and they called around 8:30 notifying us that they were gonna look at him now asking the same questions we had already told 3 other people when we arrived. They called again at 9:15 saying they were done and that it would be about 45 minutes to get his medication and paperwork in order. We drove the 40 minutes back and as we were driving they took our payment but when we arrived they apparently had done nothing to discharge him. The workers were completely rude and not in a rush to do anything despite saying over and over all day that they were busy and that's why they hadn't seen my dog for 8 1/2 hours. At around 10:30 we went inside and asked where our dog was and that they told us at 9:15 they were going to meet us outside. The lady's working looked confused when we told them the name of our dog and again used the excuse that they were busy when we were listening to them gossip for about 10 minutes before saying anything to them. Finally a lady brought our dog outside handed me a bag of medication and said "you can read it" and walked away. I was in shock that that's the way they treated things there and as we were about to leave I realized they hadn't told us if they gave the medication to our dog yet or if I should be giving it to him when we got home. I walked inside and asked and they looked at me like I was being rude when I told them what the lady had said. They asked me if I had the discharge papers and I told them no that she hadn't given me any and the lady finally told me that no they hadn't given my dog anything. So 11 hours at the vet in a cage when it took one test to get him out of there. The people working here have no compassion and are the rudest people that I have ever seen at a vet. Especially a lady with curly hair working at a desk rolling her eyes at us the entire time we were talking and the nurse that came out with the medication that also rolled her eyes as she walked away. DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE! We brought our sick, very large and strong Maine Coon male cat here on Saturday, was told it was a UTI, they gave him a shot of antibiotics and sent us home, on Sunday he took a turn for the worse so we put him in the pet carrier, drove the 40 minutes there, waited about 45 minutes before they swooped him away, half hour later they came out and asked if they could sedate him because he was being feisty (he was sick and scared) I said yes...half hour after that they brought us into an examination room to meet with the doctor....doctor finally shows up and tells us they can't sedate him, he's too aggressive.....she said he hissed at her when she went near the pet carrier that he was still in, she left the room and never came back...we had to ask someone at the front desk to get our cat, shortly after that someone wanders out with the cat and meds.....they sent our cat home to die, our cat was in that pet carrier for about 5 hours total, she was very rude and uncaring....she refused service to my cat....on Monday he was still sick, we took him to Central in Guilford and the news is not good, he has a blockage....he will be there for a few days, no guarantees.....at Central they took him right away, doctor talked to us within 15 minutes of arrival...they gave us an estimate of the costs....THIS PLACE IS NOT FIT TO CARE FOR OUR PETS......UNCARING AND UNPROFESSIONAL read more

Nobody wants to have to take their pet to the hospital but if you do, you want to have a positive experience and it's always been that way with my visits to Pieper Memorial. So far, I've had to take my dog son in for a torn ACL which they advised me to do physical therapy over surgery which I thought spoke volumes since they likely could've gotten more money with the latter. It's been a few years now since then but with only a few months of therapy my dog son made an almost full recovery walking on a leg that he wasn't using often after the injury and pretty much full muscle rebuild after severe atrophy. To this day, the leg is still doing awesome. Then most recently after a routine visit to his regular vet, I was sent to do an ultrasound of his liver. During our visit, you could tell that the staff really cared, something that others in the waiting room echoed. Luckily, my little guy was fine, and I feel they truly shared my joy in that. The hospital is expensive and I can't compare it to anywhere else, but you can't put a price tag on peace of mind when it comes to our animal family and I have always felt in good hands here. read more

My dog Oliver developed bladder stones and required surgery which was preformed at Pieper, subsequent to the surgery Oliver was placed on a prescription diet to prevent a reoccurence. Oliver's is now under a prescribed diet and in order for me to obtain his food a prescription is required. Pieper now refuses to refill the prescription for the food that they prescribed without repetitive follow up visits costing hundreds of dollars. Bottom line after spending over $3,000 for a surgery, Pieper is making it as difficult as possible for me to do the right thing for my pet without spending additional ridiculous amount of money at their facility. Took my kitty to the emergency room at night about a 1 1/2 hrs drive. Very rude and uncaring staff. Multiple staff members were making fun of the pets in their care and the owners. A staff member was heard saying they should have just lied to the owners. A dog that needed oxygen was refused treatment due to the owner's inability to pay right away. I truly hope they ended up giving the dog oxygen. A couple overheard these things as well and left with their dog disgusted. With all this I asked for my cat back however no brought him to me or updated me for hours and I did not know what was going on with my cat. They apparently ran x-rays and the vet was rude and belittling when I asked to see the x-rays and for clarification on the treatment plan. When they finally gave my cat back he was soaking wet, his carrier and blanket were soaking wet and his food tray was thrown on top of him. When I asked what happened nobody seemed to know. Also, after leaving my cat did go on to develop a nosebleed, he had no nose bleeding before he was seen as well as no fever and was otherwise stable. I told the receptionist at check out and she looked as if I wasn't the first to complain. I immediately took my kitty elsewhere and received amazing care. I waited literally an hour for someone to triage my dog before I gave up and left. How can you possibly know she is not serious if you can't take the 2 seconds to come out and look at her? If she was ever determined to be OK I probably would have decided to go home and wait til morning vs then waiting an additional 6 hours in my car. Several people outside that night waiting forever for vitals to be checked. There were only maybe 5 cars there at the time. Do you guys not have a staff person dedicated to triage? If you don't, you should, or at least have more staff available to do so given you are aware of the fact you are so busy... You probably wouldn't have so many pissed off people waiting in your parking lot. I understand all ERs have been extra busy these days however your organization skills are just horrendous. Had I known up front it would take so long JUST TO TRIAGE/CHECK VITALS I wouldn't have wasted an hour sitting there with my sick, dehydrated animal. I also noticed now they will no longer allow their vets to sign off on chewy/1800 pet meds prescriptions due to people getting expired things in mail? The whole reason I was going thru them for my animals meds was because Pieper gave me expired meds on 3 occasions! Not to mention the cost is insane compared to being able to order online and not thru them. Money making nightmare. Don't go! I drove half an hour to another ER that night that triaged my dog immediately and then took her right in to be seen-because she did in fact need to urgently be seen. Get your act together Pieper! If I could give Piper Veterinary 0 stars I would. I brought my dog here this past week. She is older and had a sudden change in function. I waited over 3 HOURS for a doctor, to call me. He asked a few questions, told me the exam was normal. He offered a few very pricey tests and consults, sounded quite annoyed when I refused. She is a very senior dog, and After all he told me her exam was normal. It took 45 minutes for her to be brought out! She was anything but normal. She could barely walk and could not get in the car. I do not believe this doctor performed an exam. When we brought her home that day she quickly decompensated. Long story made short, she passed the next day. I could not speak about it so I have sent emails and have not received any response. DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE. read more

Not happy at all with this facility. Our dog has been having reoccurring respiratory issues, they did a battery of test and claim he need this inhaler and heart pills for a defective heart valve. Days after starting new meds he got real sick and vomiting, we needed to go to their ER. The room stunk and had blood all over the floor and waiting area...DISGUSTING. They provided more meds to stop the vomiting, now we restarted the inhaler and with in days HE CANT SEE eyes are glazed over. Dr again claims it cant be the meds ...I don't think they have a clue... The worst experience ive ever had with vet services they are extremely unprofessional i live an hour away from them i just took my dog for a visit to recheck her insicion of her surgery and they called me 2 minutes before her appointment as im calling to check her in to inform me they screwed up her appointment and assigned her for an incorrect appointment mind you she hasnt been back for weeks but yet you notice minutes before her appointment that you messed up so unprofessional i will never take my dog to this vet again nor recommend them theyre technician ken is abusive he yanked my dog out of the car after 2 days of my dog having surgery and nothing was done to employee for discipline. read more

I took my dog there on a Sunday for an emergency for his back. The staff was so awesome and helpful and caring, the neurologist called me as soon as he got there and kept me in the loop the entire time! I never felt confused or brushed off ever. They saved my dog and I will forever be grateful for that. They are so fully staffed it's wonderful and as many times as I called to check in they always told me it was absolutely fine, gave me a complete update and never made me feel like I was a bother. It's a very clean place and still very welcoming. Dr. Hammond was absolutely amazing, he stayed in touch and was so good to my dog the entire time! Only specialty vet that would not quote me a price for an MRI over the phone - not even a base price subject to increase. They insist my regular vet waste his time calling to tell them the same information I can tell them. CompanionMRI is only $1825 for the MRI but unfortunately they no longer have a neurologist on staff. No way Pieper can get my business to see a neurologist if I don't even have a guess as to how much I'll be spending. read more

I called this morning at the recommendation of my own vet, which was closed, to find out if my dog's situation was serious enough to bring him in. The woman who answered the phone said she wasn't a doctor so couldn't advise me about whether to bring him in. I asked if she could ask someone else? No. She seemed genuinely confused about why I would ask for advice over the phone. She said that's not something they do. I said but that's what all vets do, over the phone, especially emergency vets - let you know whether there's anything you can/should do to help your pet right away at home abs if your pet's symptoms are serious enough to come in. Because it can be so hard to know what is an emergency. She didn't want to hear what was going on with my dog at all. She finally told me to bring him in or not, but then she said they have a long wait right now. So no, we will not ever be bringing him there and I will make sure my vet knows not to send anyone else there again. read more
