With their big lunch boxes, and delicious food, Jamaica Jamaica got me hooked on Jamaican/Caribbean food and I consider it one of my favorite cuisines. I'd say my Jamaica Jamaica life could be split into 3 segments, in which I would always get the same thing no matter what. My first phase was the curry chicken - such a fantastic dish with chicken that came off the bone, a vibrant curry sauce, and potatoes and carrots to round out the dish. When you paired it with rice, cabbage and plantains, it was an almost perfect meal. My second phase was the curry shrimp, I was always enticed by having a seafood option. The flavors of the curry shrimp were the same as the curry chicken, except the vegetables varied. I enjoyed this dish too, but I would say the biggest issue would be that the shrimp sometimes got really soft after sitting out for some time. My current phase is their Jerk chicken. I would say that their Jerk chicken is unique because they make the chicken, but they let it sit in a sauce that soaks up the seasoning. This is a great topper for my rice, but I think it contributes to the fact that the Jerk chicken is definitely not as flavorful as I know it to be. It misses the mark on bringing the heat, it has some flavor and heat but it is very very mild in my opinion. Generally speaking, I would be aware of the Jerk chicken drying out. This has happened to me on an occasion or two, along with the rice being dry too. Outside the realm of food, I would say the interior could use a little work. The furniture is a bit dated and things are cluttered. However, the staff working there is nice and they always pack the food in a big to-go container, so you can bring it back to the office, and then home because they are not shy about the portions. This was my first time having Ethiopian food although I have been eager for years to try it. A few things that stood out to me: 1) I was curious what Injera would taste like (I was expecting something like a Nan bread flavor, but to my surprise it was this beautiful tangy lemon flavor due to the fermentation process it goes through. 2) the lentil Sambusas are outstanding as well as the beef. I had the combo. I will try the chicken ones next time. They are these beautiful triangular stuffed pastries. (Think outside texture similar to a fried asian spring roll with the savory filling of say a Jamaican patty but better!) 3) The coffee is so darn flavorful!!! I usually drink my coffee with cream and lots of sugar. But because of the rich flavor of this coffee, I was enjoying it straight up. Then I added a small amount of brown sugar that, in my opinion, added nothing. Next time, I will leave the sugar out. 4) The ambiance was very inviting although, I could not tell from the quick trips I was making to the Jersey Mike's next door. 5) My server Salem was very nice. She had a jovial personality and was excited to share the culture of the food and its preparation. Needless to say, I'll be going back often. We had a very helpful waitress answer a few questions and the food came quickly. The Sambusa appetizer should have perhaps taken a bit longer. The edges were crisp and tasty as was the Deko sauce it came with. But the center was still a bit cold so a bit more time was needed. I wanted beef tibs and went with the Zilzil tibs knowing there would be less sauce and danger of staining my work clothes. They were plentiful, well-cooked if not powerfully seasoned. They were quick to bring ample powered pepper so I could give it some kick dipping each injera enveloped bite for some added heat. The winner was my vegetarian dining companion who went with the very flexible pick three from many vegetarian options. They were a distinct yet complimentary troika of richly favored dishes. At least for lunch, Goorsha goes with individual plates rather than the traditional round platter family style so familiar in Ethiopian cuisine.
