The Stumptown Burger was the biggest surprise stacked with so much goodness from the juicy patty to fried slice of Gouda cheese! Probably the tallest burger I've had the pleasure of inhaling, but so much flavor in each bite, including the homemade bacon jam! The BBQ (ribs and brisket) were good as well. My husband and I made the foolish choice to go for a walk in the rain. We stumbled upon this place and went in to dry off. We sat at the bar for a beer, and the staff was instantly so friendly, and it smelled excellent. We got a couple drinks and started chatting. They offered us a sample of their habanero relish and omg. It was delicious. And hot as hell. We loved it. We insisted upon returning with our group the next night to have dinner, and the group was very apprehensive given the other reviews. Those reviewers were so wrong. The food was amazing! We especially loved the BBQ sauce, the wings, the BBQ nachos (which were freaking huge!!!) with delectable brisket. The pulled pork was awesome. And don't forget...the habanero relish. Man def had a great experience with this place compared to what I have read here. They are small with a 2 man kitchen and thought they did great with the volume of ppl they had. I have been all over the United States of America. This is by far the best BBQ I have ever had the luxury of tasting. God blessed my tongue with this one. First, the waitress was so nice and personable. She really delivered! Second, THE FOOD! My partner and I ordered the BBQ for 2 and it delivered! The price was $50 but I believe it was 100% worth it. The local cider was super good and paired really well with the food!! We will definitely be coming back and I can't wait to try different stuff on the menu. Quite possibly the worst food I have ever purchased. The portions were tiny, the BBQ sauce was bland, the cornbread was actually hard so we tossed it to the Bluejays, and the slaw was simply shredded cabbage in a cup. The sides were served in small, and I mean, small plastic cups so the customer does not realize how little the potion is. There is a shortage of staff in the area right now so be sure to get there earlier because it does take a bit to get your food. (That is why we left 4 stars) We went on July 4th and several restaurants in the area were closed so they were packed, and you could see the wait staff were working hard to get everything out as quickly as possible. They have a large selection of beers available, so have a drink and relax while you wait for your food. We ordered the sweet potato fries, hush puppies, pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw and one meat platter with brisket, Mac and cheese and potato salad. The food was definitely worth the wait! We would highly recommend both dishes, but the Mac and cheese wasn't my husband's favorite. Overall we would definitely recommend for some quality BBQ. read more

Hopeful experience turned sour. Our group was seated fairly quickly after arriving and the server was nice to arrange something since we were 9 people. The restaurant was packed so we realized after about 30 minutes that we would have a longer than average wait for our food. Our group was pretty forgiving at first. We checked in after about an hour and asked for an update. The server said we were probably up next but gave us little to no confidence. As we approached two hours, we received no updates, our mood plummeted and the servers made jokes in bad taste. After arriving at 7:45pm, we received our food at 10pm. We were the last tables in the restaurant and they did not offer any apologies, explanations or compensation for our time. Not to mention, the food was bad!! Anyone who's ever had half decent bbq would agree. Our bad experience could have been avoided if they simply communicated to us from the start that their kitchen was backed up. read more

But now that I'm back home from vacation I see they charged is $58 for our 2 sandwiches. Our receipt (with tip) says $34. WTF?! What a fantastic find on our way back from a full day at Glacier. Everyone was starving and this place served up exactly what was needed. It was obvious that they were busy and somewhat overwhelmed but we decided it looked worth the wait. We were not disappointed. The staff were in full speed mode but remained friendly and professional and did their best to seat us and get us drinks and some tortilla chips and queso for a starter. The outdoor seating was a perfect way to relax and enjoy a cold beer. They had some great music playing in the background as well. We ended up the BBQ Nachos and the 3 Meat platter for our mains. Besides the great food....the best aspect about Piggyback BBQ is the countryside and picnic style setting. It features tables and benches on the lawn and grass among trees all situated in front of the restaurant. What a wonderful and cozy little locale I found it all to be. I was coming from exploring a few days at Glacier National Park. And after all the hiking and running around that I had just done....I was craving some real and authentic barbecue. Piggyback BBQ is located right on the outskirts of downtown and touristy Whitefish, MT. I actually found this place on Yelp as I was interested in passing through Whitefish and wondered if there were any good spots for lunch. And yes....this place was perfect for me to chow down on some hearty and home-style food. I visited in late August and parked on the side of the restaurant. Being a beautifully sunny day....I immediately knew I wanted to sit outside at a picnic table. So yeah, I was thrilled to be hanging out and enjoying a meal surrounded by such a cozy and charming atmosphere. The menu is pretty standard for BBQ restaurants. They featured all the basics, the usuals.....sandwiches, ribs and racks, platters, dinners.....even burgers, tacos, soups and salads. For any casual BBQ place, Piggyback had it all. My first and foremost option is the pulled pork sandwich. Especially for lunch, it was just the choice I was looking for. It came with kettle chips, though for $1 more I substituted the chips for mac 'n' cheese....of course, lol. Everything was perfect. Yeah although I'm easy to please, for lunchtime over the summer.....it was pleasant and quiet here and I got served right away. My sandwich came out moments after ordering. The table offered plenty of homemade BBQ sauces to pick from. I squirted the house honey BBQ sauce all over my plate. And the pulled pork was a success.....nice and lean....virtually no fattiness to it. The buns were toasted adding a nice crunch and the mac 'n' cheese was prepared homemade and fresh. I spent 15 minutes scarfing down my meal enjoying it w/ a refreshing soda. But....my favorite moment was appreciating the surroundings, which I stopped to take notice of often. I love eating outdoors when the weather is warm. Overall, besides the food being great, it was the whole vibe and atmosphere hanging out on the lawn at a picnic table that truly won me over. My bill came to $14....and I left $20. Nice and easy. No problems. My waitress was friendly. I'm glad I chose to eat at Piggyback BBQ. I can't speak to the in-restaurant dining, I was here for takeout. It was a beautiful sunny day, and we were on our way to the airport. Knowing that little options there were at the airport, we decided to get lunch... real lunch. What we needed was something delicious and quick. Enter Piggyback BBQ, which was recommended by our friends that live in Whitefish. Upon arriving, I entered and ordered two pulled pork sandwiches. It took maybe 15 minutes, but that was okay. I got potato salad on the side, wife got coleslaw. About 15 minutes later, we had our takeout boxes, and we were on our way. The food.. let's discuss.. toasted bun, with meat inside. Sauce one the side, and the selected side next to it. Soon we were scarfing it down, and our faces, hands and everything else was covered in sticky love. The sides were also tasty, seasoned well. This is a quaint place is located right across the second bridge from downtown. We came in for early dinner with my girlfriends. Enjoyed the Hushpuppies and meat for 2. We enjoyed the sides as well. Not used to a lot of vinegar in coleslaw, since were from Tx girls. They had several BBQ sauces from vinegar based, tomato based and a homemade mustard. The ribs were tender. The first review I've ever written... food was not the greatest. The bbq sauce was great! Service was not good. Our waitress didn't come back to check on us besides taking our order. Might have been short on staff, but we had to go to the bar just to ask for a refill of water. Waited about 50 minutes for our food. Some locals even said that it was the longest they've ever waited there and almost walked out. Great music playing, but a lot of flies for sitting indoors. I think from the staffs point of view they have like 30 tables with only 2 waiters, so it's completely understandable for the wait. The staff here is super friendly, super hard working, and super accommodating! The staff here works there butt off for the low staff here. They are never sitting down or standing around. They are always running around with plates and drinks so if you come here please be patient with them. The food here was great! I can only say from the point of view of my own food but I was with my big group of people but my pull pork was really good and I could tell it was cooked very good! The Mac and cheese was decent but I also like my Mac and cheese covered cheese. The pull pork it's self was really tasty and was a pretty good price for it too! Good lord. Get some help, or at least let people know that you're EXTREMELY short staffed. The one waitress that was there, waited on 3-4 tables that came in 15-20 after my wife and I sat down and never made eye contact. We had planned to go to Jalisco Cantina for our 25th anniversary and even walked .8 mile to get there. But it was stuffy, Not just the temp but the atmosphere. We canceled our reservation and started walking back into town. We had walked past the Piggyback BBQ and stopped to check it out. We loved the vibe of the whole place! I got a half order of The True Grit po-boy! No way could I have eaten a full order. It was the best thing I've put in my mouth since we left California. My friends had sliders, brisket, loaded potato, tortilla soup. It was all great! During our meal it started raining and we moved inside, but many stayed out under the umbrellas.
