Every time I make it to Pigtails, I somehow get there after the kitchen staff has already left so I still haven't gotten to actually try the food! I've heard their oysters are really good, though, so I'm determined to eventually make it there early enough. What I can review are the drinks--they're amazing. Swung by with a large group on a Saturday night. Fairly busy, but we luckily snagged a corner booth that accommodated all of us. Cozy atmosphere with rustic/modern decor. Waiter had to bring us menus because none of us were able to get cellular service to open the QR menu code. Started off with a few dozen oysters and a cheese board. So many drinks were ordered and our group enjoyed each one. Can't remember all the names, but they were all well prepared and brought out quickly. Oysters were very fresh and cleaned nicely. We had a reunion of alumni for our consultant staff that gathers every two years all over the country. Pigtails was a remarkable venue. It is a "speakeasy" with a great comfortable atmosphere. We had 65+ in attendance and it was the perfect size. We had the whole place. Alex the GM was so accommodating and every request we had he said "no problem". Prices were fair the food fantastic and there was never a line to get drinks. The chef Shawn never left the room and made sure food items were replenished even before we asked. Oink oink oink. I stopped by Pigtails Desert Ridge on a Monday night for some drinks. As the self-appointed king of speakeasies, I was excited for my second visit. Located in Desert Ridge Marketplace, there's plenty of parking though it is a busy area. As someone who has been to speakeasies all over the world, there are certain things I look for so that it's an authentic experience. Sadly, as speakeasies have become a popular thing, some have opened that don't stay true to the historical roots of what a speakeasy is. Let's see how Pigtails fares (and note: they have another location downtown. Ambiance (4/5): Speakeasies popped up during the Prohibition Era when alcohol was illegal in the U.S. Since they were underground bars, there was no signage. You had to know where to go to find it. Which is part of the experience. There should be a creative way to get into a speakeasy. This is an area where Pigtails fails. While it's somewhat hidden, there's a neon sign that says Pigtails. Dead giveaway. You walk down a flight of stairs and that takes you to the bar. When you arrive, you'll see a central bar with bar stools surrounding it. With some nice booths on the exterior. Which is where I sat. The lighting could be a little darker (after all ambiance is one of the hallmarks of a speakeasy) and the music was a bit too loud, but outside of that, nicely done. Service (4.5/5): Friendly and mostly efficient service all-around. They fill up your water cup without you asking. They provide you with helpful recommendations. And there's free WiFi which you might need because my reception wasn't great underground. You pay using one of those hand-held electronic card readers which have become super popular. This may be a pet peeve of mine but I like to see an itemized receipt before I give you my credit card. Food (N/A): I don't think they have food, but if you're hungry, The Whining Pig is attached to Pigtails and they have food there. All it takes is a short walk down a hallway to get there. Drinks (4.5/5): When I'm at a speakeasy, I'm not trying to see a margarita, mojito, gin & tonic, etc. I'm trying to see creative crack cocktails that blend an interesting group of ingredients. And this is what you'll find here. Despite several cocktails not being available, there was a ton on the menu that I wanted to try. I had three cocktails on this visit including Panic at the Disco (IYKYK), and one that was served in a clear tea cup with a huge ice cube (and earl gray tea was one of the ingredients). Exactly what I was hoping for. While the "Pigtails" signage outside of the speakeasy was disappointing, these rest of the experience was terrific. read more

It's a little tricky to find the place as you walk down a back hall that looks like it's used by maintenance. Walk past the bathrooms, turn right and you appear in a dingy looking speakeasy type place with plants on the wall. I get the dingy speakeasy vibe but the plants I'm not so sure. The place has a good number of high end spirits and the cocktail menu has a good selection. They will smoke your drink for an extra cost which I think they could throw in for free given the 60 seconds it takes to smoke. There is a chalk board over by the oyster station that shows some off menu selections. Oh yeah they serve oysters with an east and west coast selection and they tasted fresh. A great speakeasy down in the basement and away from the summer heat! All of the drinks were flavorful and strong - even the non-alcoholic drinks. What we ordered: - Serious gourmet shit: their version of an espresso martini, pretty decent! Apparently they make their own kahlua or "kyhlua" - Banana stand: my favorite drink by far and I don't like bourbon. The coconut fat washed bourbon was smooth and cut the alcohol burn down so we could really taste the flavor of the bourbon! - Breakfast club: the strongest tasting drink and not really my jam, but had unique flavors It wasn't too crowded when we went on a Friday night before our dinner reservations elsewhere. This is always a fun place to stop into and have a few glasses of wine after going to a drag brunch on a Saturday at the Improv around corner. Well...I'm sure it's fun at other times as well, but that's those are the only times I've ever come here. It's a really cool, cozy atmosphere. The speakeasy/basement area seems particularly cool but it always seems like there's events going on there in the afternoons when they open so I've pretty much only drank at the upstairs bar or the patio which is also fun. ! WARNING ! I was at Pigtails for a few hours from approximately 5:30pm to 7:30pm. I had noticed a few mosquitos flying around my head but didn't think too much of it. Little did I know underneath the table I was being attacked. I went home with over 20 bites on one leg and 10 on the other. I called to bring this to their attention and they said "it's because of their plant wall and they are in process of hiring a different pest control company". I truly hope they do. They have a mosquito infestation going on and mosquitos breed disease such as West Nile disease, Zika etc. I will be reporting this to the Arizona Health Department. At first we were at the Whining Pig and it did not seem like the right place so I asked the bartender for a menu and he told me it was in the back and to the right. We went on a Sunday afternoon and I wasn't expecting a lot of people. There were four of us in the bar. I had the classic whiskey sour and my wife had a rum drink. Both were excellent. We sat at the bar so we could watch them prepared. Food was the nachos with chicken. Flavor was good but really small chips packed pretty tight so it was hard to pull it apart once the cheese started to harden. I expected more ambiance. Kind of dark (which you might expect) but rather spartan. Some dying plants on the wall didn't help. How they expected plants to live without light is beyond me. Just felt a little dingy and dirty. This place was a super fun find. I did not realize that it was a speakeasy type place so it took a minute to find. We ended up starting at the Whining Pig and as we sat down for drinks I saw the sign for Pigtails. Super fun. So when we finished our beers we headed over to pigtails for a cocktail. We were there during happy hour and were seated right away. The bartenders were super friendly and knowledgeable. They even helped my mom find a drink she liked and she is super picky and doesn't often try new things. The cocktails were amazing, all three of us loved ours and they were so pretty to boot! We had the artichoke dip as well and it was delicious. It definitely hit the spot. I also absolutely loved the atmosphere and and ambiance. It was dark and relaxing. Tried to come here once four years ago and it was super busy and somehow didn't try to go again until tonight! We only had to wait a couple of minutes and then a spot was ready! The service was good, my husband actually knew one one the bartenders from a bar him and his friends used to go to! I got two cocktails, one had guava and a Brazilian liquor. We have been here twice, once by ourselves for a date night and the other when my family was in town. Both experiences were wonderful! The place is split into two, one is a beer garden feel with beer and wine and the other is a cocktail bar. The nice thing is you can order from either side. The whiskey selection is awesome, which I greatly enjoy. The smoker was working this past time where they add smoke to your whiskey drinks which adds some additional flavor to them. Either way, the OGs (old fashioneds) are always good. My family got various different drinks, but all of which they loved! My father got some drink that came in a glass in the shape of a female body, which we all got a good laugh from. The appetizers were also really good. This last time we got the pretzel and beer cheese and the Korean wings. The pretzel and beer cheese were delicious! The wings had a hint of heat, but were not super crispy, but still tastey. The first time we visited there was little sweet and Smokey pieces of pork in a sweet and spicy dipping sauce that was out of this world. "Pigtails" is Whining Pig's speakeasy. The entrance is at the top (NE corner of Whining Pig). Once inside, just follow the corridor all the way until you hit a dead end then turn right, and you're in! The ambiance is summerly and tropical. It's delightfully larger than other speakeasies in the valley, so you can actually take large groups here. I would still recommend making a reservation which you can do by emailing them at desertridge@pigtailscocktails.com I ordered the "Song of the Syrens" ($13) which had Zaya dark rum, coconut, pineapple, homemade cinnamon, demerara tincture, and tiki bitters. It lived up to its name, seductive and appealing (goes down very easily), and is therefore very dangerous. I also ordered a Piña colada ($11) but it was too sweet and tart simultaneously, like sour candy. My friend ordered a Charcuterie board and we liked it, you could tell they used quality items. Legit had two espresso martinis in a span of like an hour and a half, and when I asked to order another one they wouldn't serve it to me because one of the servers " had a feeling".
