No matter what kind of day I'm having, I know that being in Lisa's yoga class will help me reset. Her cheerful demeanor and welcoming personality have a way of getting me to step away from whatever stresses I'm dealing with to be present in class. Lisa's teaching is tender, great for both a beginner and someone who practices regularly. When I first started going to her classes, I might have described them as a bit easier that others. That's not true. She teaches in a way that helped me be at ease in some pretty difficult poses, and made what that seemed impossible to me more accessible. If by easier I meant that it was easier to take risks in my practice with her, then that is the truth. Over the course of a couple of months last spring, I was taking classes nearly every day, and was in Lisa's class for a majority of that time. She made me feel cared for, took the time to connect as a person as well as a teacher, and really supported me to grow my practice. While I didn't see my own progress from class to class, I certainly made some big strides and got really strong in the process. I know that her supportive and gentle teaching helped me get there. Florida, you are lucky to have this lady. I miss being able to take classes from her regularly now that she is across the country. Don't make the mistake of missing Lisa's class. I have never truly considered yoga being for me. I am not flexible, skinny or fond of bright colored wild printed fabrics. I do workout, stretch and just happen to look good in black, I might be flexible if my pudgy parts didn't get in the way. But I did try Lisa Day's Candlelight Forrest Yoga Class at Innerstellar Pilates & Yoga Studio in Berkeley and LOVED IT! Lisa helped me find ways to makes the poses work for me and the level I am currently at. Everyone there modified - it was encouraging to see props, blocks and different variations. Plus, I never felt judged, stressed or like I was way over my head. I don't know how to describe it, the class was fun, easy to keep up with and totally kicked my butt, I was sweating and sore the next day, yet it never felt like work. I loved it so much I tried it again the following week. Her class grew from 13 people to 18 - I thought (ooo no) the secret is out, they know how awesome this instructor is. read more

I've come to know Lisa as an instructor at Innerstellar Yoga. She is absolutely delightful. She has such a sparkly energy, all of her classes are infused with a sense of playfulness and curiosity about our bodies. They are lighthearted, and we are encouraged to try (and possibly fail!) and look at where we are with love and acceptance rather than judgment. So Lisa's classes would be wonderful just as a sort of moving meditation and a reminder to be compassionate to ourselves. But she's also deeply knowledgeable about Pilates and Forrest yoga and her sequencing in the classes is very intuitive and supportive. Her cues help me simultaneously relax and remain active in a pose. My body is grateful every time! It's hard to believe but Lisa is just at the start of her amazing teaching career. Being a friend of Lisa meant I had the opportunity to discuss Yoga & Pilates and how the exercises could actually benefit me both physically and mentally. Her passion to better herself inspired me and I took the plunge and tried Pilates. I'm an older man, historically exercising through competitive sports; men's league softball and basketball with tournaments mixed in. That was the extent of my exercise for the entirety of my adult life. Never a big gym guy at all, so doing Pilates was a completely new experience for me. Lisa was extremely patient and supportive, allowing me to find my way. I knew I was messing up and would just try and come close to the rest of the group. I am an ultra-marathon trail runner sidelined by a knee injury. I wasn't quite sure what to do until I spoke with Lisa. After a conversation about what was happening with my body, we both decided the best place for me to start was with her Reformer Pilates classes. I began to see changes right away. Lisa knew exactly what I needed to regain my body strength again. She is the most amazing compassionate and encouraging teacher I've ever met. Using the reformer pilates machine was the perfect solution for me, I was able to strengthen my knees, abs, hips and buttocks without putting excess weight on my knees. After running 50Ks I wasn't even able to walk 1 mile without pain, but with Lisa's help and patient guidance I have gotten stronger and more fit. Her classes have allowed me to be hopeful that I will be back to running my ultra marathons sooner than I would have even thought possible. I was scared of pilates. Somehow I thought it was going to be really aggressive and hard. Lisa's kind and steady personality made me willing to try it. In a single session I felt so many new muscles. I'd been living with shoulder pain for several years before I started working with Lisa. Gravity and stress had taken toll on my 50+ yr old body; I couldn't lift my arms over my shoulders, and I could only sleep when on my back. Physical therapy wasn't working: some aches were improving but others worsened. I was depressed about my prospects for the future. Then I met with Lisa to talk about Pilates. Lisa listened to my story, studied my movement, and started working on a number of issues related to my shoulder pain. Not just the shoulders, but my back, arms, sides and abs. Lisa is helping me, gently but firmly, correct my biomechanics. It's hard work, but Lisa is encouraging, and the Pilates exercises are working wonders. Shoulder pain doesn't hold me back any more. I am stronger, and my balance is better. I feel confident in my body, instead of feeling at its mercy. Yay, Pilates! Tried yoga for the first time years ago and found it difficult but challenging. I thought Pilates would be similar but easier because it using a machine with little resistance. Typical guy brain. Pilates was not easier but it was still challenging in different ways. It requires incredible focus, learning your body in detail. It has helped me workout better at the gym by being able to focus better on specific areas. Lisa has been incredible with teaching Teresa and I, never letting us cheat ourselves. It's been fun learning along side Lisa as she has been learning to teach as well. She keeps it simple and works with our limits while still pushing us. I have been taking Pilates with Lisa twice a week for the past 8 months, and almost 76 my golf is stronger than ever. She is constantly mixing up our routine so it is never boring and pushing me to be stronger especially working on my balance which is a problem due to a very arthritic ankle. I am leaving Florida to go up north for 5 months and she had written out exactly what she is dong with me so I can find a teacher up north to continue her good work. I'm not one that feels comfortable in a group setting. Always the one in the back, observing more than doing. Stay in shape with my elliptical and free weights. However - after recently breaking my hip - that's not possible. With Lisa's encouragement and support, I tried Pilates with her. Fabulous !!! So patient and informative. Lisa is a fabulous addition to the teaching staff at Innerstellar. She not only knows how to teach a thoughtful and thorough class, but she is incredibly intuitive as to how to meet each student's needs on any given day. Her classes have a great flow (not too fast or too slow). One sign of an awesome class for me is when I can get lost in myself, where I am not looking at the clock or thinking about what's for dinner. Lisa's classes allow me to go deep and get lost. And, her assists are delicious. This lady's got "magic hands!" The only downside...is when the class ends. But even then...you get a hug and come back for more.
