Consumers, you are getting ripped off if you are buying the gallon jugs of Salinity Acid at Pinch-A-Penny. Early in the year, when I went to buy some Muriatic Acid, they had a new product on the shelf. I asked the employees about it and they said to buy the Salinity acid because it was the same product. Products are always changing so I didn't think anything about it. The problem was, I couldn't really get my PH under control. I've had my 22K pool since 2004, have done the chemicals myself (SaltPool) AND IT usually takes between 1 qt to 1.3 qts of acid each week. Well, here I was using an entire gallon of the new improved acid every week. I finally did some research on Salinity Acid only to find out that it's concentration of Muriatic Acid is only between 5 to 10% compared to the industry standard of 33-35%. Worse even is the price that they're charging for the Salinity Acid, around $12.50 I believe whereas the normal full strength Acid was $11.50 or $11.99. I've reached out to the owner, unfortunately haven't heard from them. Besides the aggravation of not having my PH balanced properly most of the spring until now, it's that I've been paying extra money (paying anywhere from $.50 to $1.00 more per jug) but buying 3 X the amount of gallon jugs that I normally use. They do still carry the normal Muriatic Acid, you just have to ask for it. If you don't believe me on this, just ask your A.I. It's a true story. It's a sad day when you can't trust a business especially after doing business with them for 22 years. The old owner, Doc was a really good owner and I'm hopeful that the owner of this store is a stand-up person too. We'll find out. Stay tuned for another episode. Thanks. read more

Watch out for the crazy high, price gouging on some items. I bought a new o-ring for my filter cartridge for ~$55. I found the same (exactly the same) item on Amazon for $8 + $4.50 shipping. I'm totally cool with paying a couple bucks more for the great convenience and service they provide but greater than 5X is crazy. We have used this pool shop for more than a decade. Products and service have been fine until now. The last set of jugs of liquid chlorine were way under strength, which contributed to an outbreak of algae that has been a pain to correct. I took one of the jugs back to the store. Manager agreed there was no whiff of chlorine in it but didn't offer to make it right. I know chlorine has gotten very expensive but this was disappointing. read more

My family has been a customer of this pool store for over a decade (even before their new location opened up). OVER A DECADE. Not anymore!!! I had my son pick up 6 jug refills of chlorine on his way home from the school. When he got home, I helped him take them out of his car. We both noticed a huge spot of chlorine in the back of his car. Then he looked down and realized it had gotten all over his tennis shoes when he was putting it in his car. He was devastated. Now let me also say that I have had a similar experience in my own car, but it was because the lid wasn't on tight when they gave it to me. I was also upset about that (my car has a black interior and a lot nicer) BUT because I hadn't checked personally that the lids were on tight before I left the store, I did not complain. Flash forward to today when this happened to my son because of a total error on their part. The leak was so bad that we put it down in the grass and it drained out within 10 mins. After cleaning up the car as best as we could, we went up to discuss it with the pool store. Immediately when I told them that their jug leaked all over my son's car, the owner got defensive and accusatory. Never ONCE did he say I'm sorry that it happened. He did put some neutralizer on my son's car so that it hopefully wouldn't get any worse but then said extremely disrespectfully, "Well, what else do you expect me to do?" I was so taken a back by the disrespectful tone! I said, "What about his shoes?!" He acted as if they were just shoes and I should get over it. Then he told me that his store NEVER lets leaking jugs out of the shop. I said, "So are you insinuating that he did this on purpose or it was somehow his fault?!!!" I said it happened less than 30 mins ago and we came straight back here! It was leaking when it left your shop!!! He then demanded to check his surveillance footage. I said great and gave him the exact time it happened. ALSO, when we went inside the closest cart to the door had a huge wet chlorine mark on it. I said, "Look that is probably the cart he used that your salesman rolled out to him." He said, "That's possible, but I couldn't prove it." He kept saying, what did I expect him to do? He told me people try to take advantage of this all the time. I said, " I'm not trying to take advantage and told him we have been customers for a long time." I also tried to explain to him just how disrespected I felt by everything he was saying to me and how he was treating my son and I. Again, he never apologized just oozed a continuous amount of condescending remarks. I explained to him that if he would have showed even ONE IOTA of remorse and didn't act like I was crazy, then I would have taken a new bleach container and left! But it was truly the way he spoke to my son and I, customers for over a decade, that I couldn't get past. I felt EXTREMELY disrespected! He did end up writing me a check for $160 (which was after he watched the video, which he never let me see, and I'm sure couldn't deny how bad it was leaking when it left his shop after watching that). Also, for the record, I only asked him to replace the shoes which I paid $60 for but I just said let's call it even at $50. I never even asked for damage reimbursement for the car. When he gave me the check he again condescendingly said, "There, now you can go out to dinner on me too." It was not about the stupid money! It was about respect, and clearly he had none for me. Customer beware!!!!!! Check your jugs before you leave the store because they do not check them as carefully as they should!!! And they will make you feel like scum of the earth if you call attention to a genuine error on their part. read more

I've never had a problem with this place. I've spent well over $2000 here on products and pool service. I had 4 chlorine jugs that I paid a deposit on back in July. I started getting their pool service paying $215 a month. The jugs remained at my house. Today I went to return the jugs 6 months later only for them to tell me they would only give my $2 per jug vs the $7.50 I initially paid for them. No one told me there was a time limit on returning the chlorine jugs. It's not the money, it's the principle. No one told me anything about bringing them back within a time limit. We're only talking about a $20 difference here, but again, it's the principle. I've spent over $2,000 at this place!!! And you want to hustle me for an extra $20!! Cmon man! read more

Poolside Service is exceptional! Huge shout out to Jay, lead service tech. She came out prepared for everything I needed done and adapted to needs on the fly. I needed a pool light replaced because it was tripping a breaker and I had several leaks that caused my pump to lose prime and a ladder that needed to be removed. She and her team arrived on time and introduced themselves. We discussed the work and she kept me informed of status through out the day. She found my spa light was tripping the breaker and not the pool light saving me about $600 off the bill. I admit I plied her with questions about other options and scenarios and she handled them like a pro. She helped me troubleshoot other issues with my pump as it was going bad and my salt cell was going bad. She installed them both and reset the panel for the salt cell and it is all running without leaks and the pool is well lit. If you need service, ask for Jay. Don't use their monthly pool service.We signed up for the weekly pool service including vacuuming, but they did not actually vacuum it. They only issued a partial credit for one month once after I repeatedly call them. They didn't even take the equipment to the pool (which is video-monitored), but checked off the service as completed on the work slip. Most of the time, the surface of the pool wasn't even properly skimmed - with dead insects and debris floating on top off it immediately after they left. When I complained about a particularly bad service, I called and asked the assistant manager specifically to send a different technician to fix the issue, but they sent the same technician back who was very defensive and lacked basic customer service skills. The technician also said he was instructed by management to simply check off the pool vacuuming as done even if he didn't do it. read more

Went into the store to look for stairs for an above ground pool and the owner was quite rude and made you feel like they are too good for above ground pool accessories. Every time I have been in that overpriced store the people are not very nice to their customers......Backyard Water.....so much nicer to deal with and went out of their way to help us. read more
