Visited here for dinner on a weeknight with a group of friends. We knew we wanted the Peking duck and were aware that it usually takes an hour+ to prepare. One of our friends was running about 20 minutes behind, but given that the duck takes awhile to prepare we asked if they could get started on the order while we put in our drinks. At first we weren't told no, but when our drinks were brought out we were told that they didn't like to put in the duck in advance as it should be eaten right away. We had to ask twice more if they could just put in the order because it takes awhile to prepare. Eventually they said yes and we ended up waiting about 20 minutes between finishing our apps and the pecking duck being brought out which was what we were trying to avoid. When we were still finishing up dinner but taking our time to chat, they kept coming by every 10 minutes or so asking if they could box anything up for us after we kept saying that we were working on it. It felt obvious that they wanted us to leave as it was close to closing. The food itself was so good, loved the spicy wontons, the pork soup dumplings, and the Peking duck! The cocktails were also great! I definitely recommend this place, but it lost a star for the hospitality. read more

Agreed with the reviews that this place expensive for what you get. It's a really beautifully decorated spot and I would love to come back for happy hour. The crab noodles were delicious as well as the lychee sorbet with lychee mochi. Skip the Dan Dan noodles and the scallion pancake martini. Service was great- super quick and attentive. read more

I was a solo diner, and enjoyed excellent attention nonetheless. The food was delicate and innovative. Items were selected to go together, and make little combinations. This was an interesting approach. Drinks are focused on all-natural and small wineries and innovative cocktails. This seems to be an important part of the menu. There were several small groups, one couple near me who were trying everything they could think of on the menu. The atmosphere is hip and comfortable at the same time. A lovely alternative to normal restaurants in this genre and in this neighborhood. Not sure how the Michelin stars were won. Still questioning that. read more

We stopped in for thier advertised happy hour. They had 2 cocktails specials, one super sweet and the other, with doritos liquor. I tried that one... I've had the gimmicky liquor before and with habanero bitters and it was good. So I tried thier dirty doritos martini.. it was confused. They dropped chili oil on top.. which just sat there.. the olive brine didn't enhance anything.. it just wasn't good. We ordered the dumplings special..3 dumplings for $10 is a bit outrageous.. they were good, don't get me wrong.. great flavor, well cooked.. but this is a special? TLDR: there are some great dishes but I'm penalizing Pinch for their overall price point for the food. IMO, not worth it. This is an upscale take on Chinese food (former chef of DTF) but I don't think the food is worth the price point for the New Yorker who isn't afraid to venture into Chinatown or think ahead to making reservations at places like Grandma's Home. We came for the classic pork soup dumplings, and while they were juicy and with thin skin, the meat was slightly mushy and at $18 per order, it's practically highway robbery compared to Chinatown's $8 versions. If you do make it here, the niman ranch cumin pork ribs are the standout and a must have- fried beautifully on the outside without any over fried bits, tender and succulent inside. At $21, actually worth it. Next, the Taiwanese beef noodle soup tasted authentic and the broth is not too sweet. The noodles taste handmade. $25 is really rough, but at least it was delicious. The bacon egg and cheese dumplings are just a novelty, and they weren't as fusiony as I would've liked so it's skippable. The string beans aren't like the deep fried ones at DTF and tasted slightly undercooked but flavorful on the outside. Fried rice was fine but skippable. It's a good ambiance so it's right for some specific types of patrons and I'm sure some folks will have a wonderful time. But me? You'll find me elsewhere. read more

Came here for happy hour on a weeknight. The vibe is upscale modern Chinese restaurant. They have a food menu for happy hour so you can try more items at a smaller scale and price point. Even so, I think this place is a little pricey. The soup dumplings were solid with very thin skin. I enjoyed the spicy wontons but I don't think the sauce was very spicy or special. The pork and chive dumplings and the turnip cake were just ok. While the food was solid, I didn't think it was worth the price point. We visited Pinch last night and had a wonderful dinner. We were walking around the neighborhood trying to find a place to eat. We walked by and the restaurant looked beautiful and had a little crowd so we stopped in. They were able to seat us without a reservation. I love how they used leggos to hold your chopsticks. How creative! We decided to do the wine flight which was a great idea. All the wines were delicious, especially the skin contact orange which was one of the most unique I've ever tasted! We split the pork soup dumplings, the beef soup with the noodles, the wagyu steak fried rice and the eggplant. All were outstanding. The wagyu steak fried rice was by far the best I've ever had and the steak was cooked perfectly. We will definitely be coming back next time we're in the neighborhood! read more

I never considered myself to be much of a dumpling/wonton fan, but after this meal I have been converted. We wanted to try something new in the area for dinner and we landed on Pinch Chinese, and I was honestly so pleasantly surprised. I started with a Summer B-Word cocktail and it was so light and refreshing. Every menu item was truly a hit to me, to start the pork soup dumplings and spicy wontons were absolutely unreal. So flavorful, and comforting, it is no secret that they are the star of the show. I was also so pleased with the string beans, they offered a nice salty crunch and I would definitely order those again. Fried rice is one of my favorite foods, so we opted to try both the seafood and steak option. The steak was incredibly tender, but the seafood definitely was a stronger flavor in the rice overall. As for the restaurant itself, it is definitely on the smaller side, I would say it is perfect for a date night. The service was fast, no complaints there. I've eaten all over, but this might genuinely be the single most amazing meal of my life. If you are debating between here and Din Tai Fung, stop! Pinch Chinese blows them out of the water. The Bacon, Egg, and Cheese dumplings are a total revelation. I've never had anything like them; they are single handedly the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. The spicy wontons are equally incredible and tied for first place in my book. Also, a huge shoutout for the portions, when you order the spring rolls, they actually give you four instead of the usual two! The quality, flavor, and service here are unmatched. Ehh. I thought this was associated with DTF but lol it seemed like Americanized Asian food (not in a good way). There was 3 cup chicken (Taiwanese) and Peking duck (Beijing) and soup dumplings (Shanghai)...so kinda threw me off lol. The food wasn't bad but not worth the price tag and small portions. Cute decor and ambiance but not rushing back for the food. Also side note (not that important) but it was funny bc all their waitstaff and host was non Asian (mostly Caucasian). TLDR: come for the duck, which you have to preorder. Skip the wine. Not great wine but good food! Come for the Peking duck, which you have to preorder 72 hours in advance (with a credit card deposit). $115 for a full duck (no half duck options). Pricey, but delicious. My husband said it might be some of the best in the city (even better than Mr. Sun, his old favorite). The green beans were also good and quite flavorful. The snow crab over glass noodles was fine but my least favorite, as it was oddly soupy underneath the noodles. With its Din Tai Fung origins, we obviously had to get the soup dumplings, which were good. The most disappointing part of the meal was the wine, but the somm was kind and generous in letting me try 3 different wines before settling on one (sadly I didn't like any of them but just stuck with the last one bc I felt bad). My friends and I went to Pinch because of the recent buzz around the xlb that was made from a dtf (din tai fung) trained chief. Xlb is one of my favorite dishes, and I love the nyc scene for it. This xlb is very similar to dtf, which is wrapped tightly with thin skin and is small compared to its nyc counterpart. This size is the normal size in dtf/Taiwan, so I loved that I was able to find it in the city! Be warned, this xlb is on the pricier side, though it's worth a try if you've never had it before. We got a couple of other dishes, and everything was good, but nothing really stood out. The dishes were well done, but with nothing really different, I felt that I could get similar quality in chinatown for cheaper. But, I did like the atmosphere and vibe of the place. Modern Chinese spot made be an alum of Din Tai Fung. Pinch Chinese and as a result, the soup dumplings at Pinch Chinese are the star of the show, filled with flavorful broth and wrapped by thin skin. The rest of the menu is still pretty strong, with well executed renditions of "three cup chicken," a Taiwanese classic, and eggplant cooked in a garlic sauce. Pricing is a little upscale but not excessive. The vibe of the restaurant is pretty modern and loud, with a crowd that reminds you that you're dining in Soho. The wall we were sitting next to was decorated with instructions on what to do when someone is choking which is a little...odd but fun I guess? The wine menu is pretty large and a welcome sight for a Chinese restaurant. Service was good, no complaints in that department. While the soup dumplings are a standout, the rest of the food offerings are still pretty good. Pinch Chinese is absolutely our favorite go-to restaurant in Manhattan for 小笼包 xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) and 红油抄手 hongyouchaoshou (spicy wontons) and sautéed pea shoots. Oh and the green beans with minced pork is amazing too. The food is consistently delicious here and the restaurant is clean, modern and quite stylish. The staff are wonderful - from the front reception desk, to the servers and bartenders - my husband and I were able to squeeze in for dinner at the bar even though the restaurant was busy with Saturday weekend diners during Chinese New Year week. We ordered all of our favorite dishes but the server recommended a CNY special honey glazed pork ribs which we were so glad we ordered. Swung by for lunch at this happening Chinese restaurant in Soho. The space is narrow, but deep. Our friend had been there before and had us sit at a high top table in the front of the restaurant, because the back gets quite noisy. The staff were uniformly lovely. They were an interesting combination of Asians, hipsters with the occasional Asian hipster thrown in for good measure. I was getting over a cold and had some excellent jasmine tea. The food was very good. The quality of the ingredients was apparent in most of the dishes. The soup dumplings were delicate and perfectly constructed. The mushroom dumplings and shrimp dumplings were pretty good. The sticky rice with pork was excellent. The snow pea leaves and snow crab with rice noodles were my favorite dishes. Most of the portions were on the small side. This place is a lot like Red Farm- a hipster Chinese mash up. Here the layout is better and the decor is nicer. The food is very good, but not a great value proposition. I liked it and am glad we visited, but it's not twice as good as my favorite Chinese restaurants. On the other hand, it is a nicer dining experience than most other Chinese restaurants. Great place for a splurge meal. If you are budget minded, you can do better. 3.75 stars. read more

Was happily introduced to Pinch as a suggestion for a meet up to dine and chat. With reservations at 5pm I arrived early to give the "parking gods" enough time to work their magic and thankfully they did. Upon entering the staff was not ready for reservation as it was still early. So I took in the decor and different seating arrangements. Once it was time, I was promptly seated while I waited for my dining companion. I started with the Chrysanthemum Tea as I was starting feel slightly under the weather. The blooming tea was a wonderful start. I continued to peruse the menu and once my companion arrived we placed our order. Starting with the chicken soup dumplings. The dumplings were ok, the depth of flavor I was expecting was missing. For the entrée, we decided on the Peking Duck, an excellent choice to say the least. The perfect skin and duck meat, was so grateful that not one piece was too chewy (experience I have had at other place when over cooked). To be clear Pinch is upscale Chinese food and that comes with a price. I'm clear that you can get Peking Duck else where at a more moderate price. Nonetheless giving the area you know what to expect and the Duck was delish. Would gladly return for the duck when looking for an experience. They kept dimming the light from 7pm-8pm which is very strange. Our waiter was very pushy, I already decided what to order and all the dishes are big portion and he kept insisting me to order more. Also when I said I didn't want to drink he seem not happy about it. I felt very unwelcome and the cold hospitality. The food -- Peking duck was great, juicy meat and crispy skin. One of the servers kept standing next to our table and glanced at us, which I felt really uncomfortable. All the servings were ridiculously measly and very overpriced. ＊ Pork Soup Dumpling ($15) If you are looking for the smallest Xiao Long Bao, here you go. We had high hopes on this as we heard it was comparable to Din Tai Fung's. However each piece was literally "bite sized", so it didn't give the explosion of juicy pork soup. The dumpling skin was thin but also quite dry, probably bc it didn't encase enough pork broth. ＊ Beef Pan Fried Dumpling ($15) We ordered the only pan fried dumpling on the menu. It would be better if they could provide steamed/pan fried option for all their dumplings. It was not an authentic Chinese flavor as the beef was marinated with curry, but unexpectedly quite delectable with its golden bottom and juicy meat fillings. ＊ Crispy Pork Dumpling ($19) The surprise hit of our meal. We were awed to enjoy the pork belly with jasmine tea crisp, adorning the perfectly crisped cracklings. ＊ Seafood Fried Rice ($23) Far below average. The rice was mushy, clumpy and lacked the XO sauce flavor. It gave a better bang for your buck comparing to other dishes as there were a generous amount of octopus, bay scallops and shrimps. ＊ Five Spiced Donut ($16) Overpriced. My friend ordered it without looking at the price and we were shocked to know they charged us $16 for this dessert. Great happy hour and even greater oysters. $1.50 oysters in soho and they were BIG and FRESHHHHH. The celery cilantro and chili oil mustard sauces were so inventive and tasteful. The dumpling combo was also nice, but the oysters stole the show. We also had the blueberry ale on the draft happy hour menu and it was lovely. Morgan was so nice, attentive, and knowledgeable. I have not been to Pinch in many years since before the pandemic, but had the chance to try it out once more. I remember this restaurant fondly for its delicious food, and on that part Pinch still delivered. Every dish was done authentically as you would see at the restaurants in Chinatown or Flushing, and with a strong showing of quality. Service was also great, each server was attentive and kind. Of note is the peking duck, which was rated as among one of the best in the city by a Beijing native I was dining with. She said you look for the texture and shape of the skin, which puffs up a certain way when it is roasted well. My gripe was that the prices of this restaurant have certainly gone up noticeably than before, even factoring in inflation! I would say the restaurant is still worth a visit, particularly to try the peking duck (reserve this in advance because they do run out!), but not for a frequent spot. read more
