I often opt for the same dishes every time I go to a Thai restaurant, so my friend and I decided we were going to diverge from our usuals and try something new - and honestly 0 regrets because they were all SO good with solid service and a vibrant interior. Okay so I couldn't give up my papaya salad, so we ordered the tum thai kai kem, and then we got the isan chicken rolls and mama e-la noodles. Honestly, I've never had anything like the isan chicken rolls, but I was genuinely obsessed with the crispy yet thin crust wrapping around the most succulent and savory filling. And the tamarind dipping sauce was, truly, a match made in heaven 100/10. The mama e-la noodles were this stir-fried noodle dish slightly reminiscent of pad see ew but with marinated brisket and curly noodles. I'll be going back fosho to try more of their dishes and would definitely recommend anyone else who likes Thai food to check them out (and try the chicken rolls + mama e-la noodles)!! read more

This was my third visit to Sappeisan. I had very good experiences the previous two times, but unfortunately on this visit there were several misses. Laab Ped Udon $25.00 Udon Thani's legendary duck Laab, rich and crispy, tossed in duck fat, chili, and roasted rice powder, and served with fresh veggies. "Udon" is not Udon Noodles I was trying to decide between crab fried rice and what I thought was "duck udon", assuming I was choosing between a rice and an udon noodle dish. I asked the waitress for her recommendation, and she showed me the photo of the Laab Ped Udon as an explanation. It looked appealing at the time. When the dish arrived, I was shocked. Where were the udon noodles? The dish looked rather sad and nothing like what I had expected. The waitress came over and explained that she had told me it was a salad, not an udon noodle dish. She may well have mentioned that with her broken English, but I clearly did not register it. Only after I went home, did I realized that "Udon" refers to Udon Thani, not udon noodles. At that point I initially wanted to reject the dish, and in retrospect, I wish I had insisted. Meat did not taste like Duck The dish consisted mostly of tiny fried meat bits mixed with a few other small pieces of vegetables that looked brown, dry, and spicy. It also came with a separate plate of lettuce, cucumbers, and raw green beans, apparently meant to be used as wraps for the meat. The presentation was not appealing. The lettuce was dripping with water and did not appear to have been properly drained. I was also uncomfortable eating the green beans raw. Raw green beans are mildly toxic because they contain a natural protein called lectin (specifically phytohaemagglutinin or phasin). More importantly, the meat bits mixture was extremely salty and dry. I tried one lettuce wrap and decided I simply could not continue eating it. The meat does not taste like duck to me at all. The pieces were chopped so finely that they were almost unrecognizable, which was quite different from the menu photo, where the dish appeared to contain more substantial chunks of meat. For $25, I expected better ingredients, preparation, and presentation. The portion was also quite small. Normally that would bother me, but in this case the dish was so salty that I had no desire to finish it anyway. Difficult Digital Menu The digital menu was another frustration. Reading it on a cell phone was unnecessarily difficult. The font was small, and the photos were hard to interpret. The "House Special" image, for example, showed roughly ten different dishes together, each image small, making it difficult to tell which dish was which. The neon pink background may be intended to create a fun atmosphere, but on a small phone screen it interferes with readability rather than helping it. Overall, this visit was disappointing compared with my previous two experiences at Sappeisan. read more

We got a table way in the back in a very tight space, even if I ignore the staff and our table location, food is really what made me give this place 2 stars. First off, why is food so sweet? I know Thai food ha sugar but you can't make it overly dessert like sweet, my fancy curry was very very sweet and flavor profile from our other 2 entrees were missing. Yeah they have a cool vibe and had a live Dj bursting some really good reggaeton, reggae music upfront but lack of good food flavors and relative high price tag don't really make this place coming back to again. We had the grilled branzino - it was deboned and was pretty big and moist. However it really didn't have any grill flavor. I found that it really needed a lot of sauce to add some flavor. The chicken rolls were a little on the dry side. The papaya salad was tasty but it didn't seem pounded like in Thailand. The pork jowls were juicy and tasty. The service is very well controlled but it felt a bit stifling too. We had one friend outside and they sat us then went to go get him versus just seating us all together. Glad I made reservations bc on a Saturday evening in May at around 8:30pm this place was rockin'! Like line out the door, people-waiting-for-30-to-40 minutes kinda busy. The interior reminds vaguely of a Thai street corner scene with glowing neon signs, medium wood tone ceilings and walls, traditional Thai inspired wall art. What adds to the energy, and makes the space feel larger and even more bustling are the multiple mirror panels placed in a strip on the ceiling, from front to back of the restaurant. While configured in a railroad-style format similar to a lot of Manhattan establishments, they pack in a deceptively high number of people, probably 100 or so between the front, back, bar seating, and two smaller offshoot rooms along the right wall. They seated my party of two right at our 9:30pm slot, and gave us a good 10 minutes to peruse the menu, which is scannable via QR code off the corner of the drink menu though no one indicated this to us directly, we just found it and proceeded. - Grilled pork jowl with sweet chili sauce $19 tender meat with some nice gelatinous (in a good way) fatty sections. Good marinade and not too salty, I have to say the grilled jowl at Saitong Thai in midtown is my fave tho. - Tomyum Tiger Shrimp Hotpot $28: yesss! So good, real Thai flavors, could be a bit spicier to be and add some more veggies to be more truly authentic though the base flavor set up was there. Came with five good-sized juicy prawns in a piping hot metal pot. - Mama E-la Noodles $25: had good flavors, the sauce on the beef reminded me of a sweet savory bean paste marinade often used on the duck in Chinese cooking. The noodles were springy and the baby gailan veggies were fresh and crisp. Unfortunately the dish was too salty, I took it home bc I didn't want to consume so much sodium in one sitting, will buy some extra gailan of my own to sauté and add to it. Wow. These Thai flavors are different from what I have previously. With the pork fried rice, you can taste the fire and char from the wok, which elevates the dish and provides a good depth of flavor. Pork jowl was also good, but could have been cut a bit smaller to capture the extra char for a stronger bite. Tom Yum Tiger Prawn soup was awesome. It was a small, dim space with tight tables so it was a bit hard to get to our seats, but luckily they had a coat check so we didn't have our big, puffy jackets at our seats. Have visited Sappe twice, and it's a fun spot on 14th Street for Thai street food done really well. The space is lively and colorful, with a boisterous energy, loud music, bright decor, and a packed room. I have been seated in both the front and back dining areas, and in each, tables are fairly close together, so it can feel a bit tight. The food is the highlight here, while the drinks are less compelling. Cocktails range from about $20 to $26 and tend to be overly complex. On my first visit, I ordered one with foam and too many ingredients and I ended up sending it back, and the staff handled it graciously and replaced it without issue. The, I tried the Somsri, which is essentially a dressed-up frozen margarita with guava purée and spicy plum powder, and I enjoyed that much more. Still, I would recommend focusing on the food. I have tried several dishes across visits. The skewers (four for $20) are a great place to start, I've tried the grilled mushroom and grilled marinated pork. Both times, I ordered the Mama-E-La ($25), a dish of grilled egg noodles with beef in a sweet soy-pepper glaze. It is very flavorful, slightly sweet, and satisfying. For today's lunch I ordered Thai iced tea which was BOGO and the lunch special containing Boong Moo Sub that came with an appetizer Fried Wonton with Quail egg. Everything hit the spot. If you're a fan of Soothr in nyc, you'll most likely like their sister restaurant Sappe -- where Soothr leans into familiar Thai favorites, Sappe carves out its own lane with a focus on northeastern Thai cuisine, so leave your Pad Thai expectations at the door. My friend and I started with the Mama E-La, their signature wok-fried egg noodles. The noodles had a deeply satisfying chew and a bold, savory flavor (garlicky, my fav!). It honestly would hit as a late-night-craving. Sappe is also well known for their skewers -- 12 options, all char-grilled over an open flame. Worth exploring, though in terms of appetizers I wouldn't order their fried enoki mushrooms again, which came out a little too oily for my taste. Their Buk Prao dessert was the surprise of the night and easily the best thing I ate. It's a whole coconut shell filled with sweet sticky rice, jackfruit, butterfly pea-infused coconut gelato, peanuts, and toasted coconut nibs, finished with a drizzle of evaporated milk. The seasoning was perfect and it was so flavorful and delicious. As items were ready they would bring them to the table. We had the yum pu dong which was fermented blue crab, Mok kala which was a thick crab curry/paste, Pla rim khong which was branzino, green curry with grilled chicken, and Lek plara gai which was a noodle dish with chicken. Out of everything the wings and Lek plara gai were my favorites. The noodles were delicious and a really good sauce mixed in. I also did like the green curry but it was a typical curry dish. Came here because of my Chase Sapphire card and open table collaboration. I also found out that they're the sister restaurant to Soothr in LIC. It's very popular this place that they had a long wait even though you had a reservation. They apologized, but nothing was done about it afterwards. I made an 8:30pm reservation and didn't get seated until 9pm. Once you get inside it felt like a maze of trying not to bump into other customers or the staff. Anyways, there were so many dishes that I wanted to try here and did, such as the wings zaab which were the fried marinated chicken wings with spicy sappe powder on it, the isan beef rolls which were seared wagyu brisket wrapped around spicy fish dip and rice and this entire small bite was really delicious, the suer rong hai, the kee mao chicken, the beef noodle 101 is self explanatory which was beef noodle soup that I didn't like too much out of all the dishes that I ate there, and last but not least the cha guay tim nom which was a silky grass jelly, with chewy bubbles, homemade milk gelato, and sprinkled with brown sugar. Sappe was high on our list and it's clear why. Top 3 Thai spots I've had in the city and in my humble opinion the best of the fish cheeks, soothr family. There's a cost check at the entrance which is nice but it can get rather tight with welcoming new guests and checking others out but this is NYC. Once inside, it has an eclectic feel with the lights and warmth. The buzz of conversation is quite high but not unexpected. The service was quite good and Amy our waitress was lovely and guided us thru the menu and our options. We got quite a few dishes including the zaab hang, beef rolls, mama e-la, krapow Sam moo, and laab ped udon. The beef roll was an instant hit along with the krapow Sam moo. Each dish was quite delicious and I would love to explore the rest of the menu. Like ordered in by the time I washed my hands it was on the table. We ordered the duck curry, khao soi, and sappe ribs. I stopped in on a Friday night for dinner at Sappe with a friend and had a delightful evening. Thankfully, we had made a reservation (which I would highly recommend) because it was a hopping place. We were sat quickly and the staff were quickly at our table to ask for our drink and food order. They were very helpful at walking us through the menu and answering questions where needed. I was very disappointed by the Beef Jungo, it just didn't taste good and it looks so different from the menu photo. The Kapow Sam Moo was a bit fatty even for pork belly but it was very flavorful. Came here around 2 PM with a reservation and it was absolutely packed. It was a complete madhouse in there from the second we got in and we were told that there was an hour and a half seating time which we can definitely see why. The tables are very close together so you can practically taste the dishes at the other tables. They are a Thai street food inspired restaurant so we had to get their classic skewers. We got a sampler of 4 for $20 and got to try beef, pork, pork belly, and chicken. Every skewer got was very tender and flavored quite well. I enjoyed the sweetness of it and the overall taste. The standout of the night was definitely their fried enoki mushroom. Although oily, it was incredibly tasty and so crispy! I liked how it had some subtle spice to it. We also ordered their seasonal tiger prawn appetizer which had a really unique chewy texture. Their zaab wings were nice and tangy and quite large. I wasn't the biggest fan of their Thai style corn dogs, as it had less meat than I had hoped for. Overall, there are a lot of unique and flavorful dishes, but the portion is quite small for the price. One of the trendy Thai food restaurants in NYC. It used to have a long line. But it is ok to get a seat once you have reservation. Dropped by during Sunday late lunch hour, and had a great food experience. We pretty much tried everything we like. All of them were nice except the rib was too salty.(but it came up with a bowl of rice, we needed to eat rice with it) Food was fresh and you can taste the grill, spices and zest combined together. They use good beef and fresh ingredients. It was a fun Thai street food type experience with this place. This place is a sister restaurant of Soothr. I can see the differences, this place is focusing on street food style, the skewers, the grill, the wok; Soothr is more focusing on Thai curry or traditional Thai dishes. The food here was delicious and had some uncommon options. I liked the variety of dishes, especially the vegetarian options. I tried mushroom and okra skewers to start, which were mostly just grilled simply. The powder seasoning served on the side helped add a ton of flavor - spicy and tart. As an entree, I had mii kati jay. This was a rice noodle dish with a sweet and savory peanut based curry, packed with tofu and mushrooms. There was a ton of complex aromatic flavor. I also enjoyed the Miss Dolly drink - not too sweet, with some delicate floral notes. My partner tried the crab curry and two meat skewers. She enjoyed both of those items as well. The total bill came to $116 with tax and tip, which is reasonable for the quality of the food and the neighborhood. Interior was incredibly cramped and a bit difficult to get to your table, depending on where you were seated. The crying tiger had great spice and the meat was very tender, but we found the portion size to be very small for the price. The mama e-la noodles were slightly sweet, and not as garlicky as we would have liked. We had ordered a side of vegetables, and expected them to be a cooked dish, but they were raw. So good. So crowded. So loud. So spicy. Phenomenal meal but you can't hear your waiter at all and the QR menu is terrible for figuring out what you want. Had two different duck dishes, ribs, beef hot pot. All wonderful. read more
