La Dong is a fun place decorated and service staffs were welcoming and prompt to order. Salad was refreshing and i liked the rice crackers in every other dish as pairing. Coconut salty coffee was quite sweet than tasting anything salt. The bathroom style with the sink outside for the one stall and handicapped friendly for the other was a good touch with the vacant/in use mechanism. Bun rieu was an interesting try the crab ball was mixed with fried egg style and the fried tofu was actually my fav instead. I had the noodle soup once before on 3rd avenue and i liked it there better. Pomelo salad had 2 good size big shrimps on the bottom! Pork chop was on sweeter and grilled tender, papaya salad was spicy but refreshing do miss a lil tang from our palate. Be sure to make reservations as the is spot gets busy; or you can try walk-in for a bar seat. We started off with the Banh Xeo ($18), which is perfect to share with two people. It was too sweet and flat in flavor. The beef pieces in the soup although a generous amount, they were hard and chewy. Also, where are the herbs and the soy sprouts?! Highlight- chicken liver mousse *not pictured* & watercress salad There's an appetizer that has chicken liver mouse & bone marrow, precisely the reason that I wanted to try this place out. Let me say, that bone marrow is the worst I have ever had. The beef short rib curry, the curry sauce was pretty good- different, they incorporate pomegranate seeds which was neat. The beef? No flavor at all. Tender, but not flavorful. I had to force myself to eat it. Back to the chicken liver mousse or pate, it was AMAZING 10/10 and the highlight of my meal that day. I also ordered the coconut/salty latte and the mixed melody mushrooms. Both were okay. I love Vietnamese food and was surprised I did not enjoy the food here. It didn't seem too busy while we were there, so you can probably get away without a reservation on a weeknight. It was a cute interior, with Vietnamese decor. I ordered the pho ha noi, and while it was a solid bowl of pho with a lot of meat, I was a bit disappointed that it costs extra to get herbs and veggies on the side. Stopped by for a quick bite while my friend and I were in the city. We got the Wagyu pho & the wings dine - in. Wagyu pho - was delish. Honestly one of the best broths we had in the city. It was beefy & spiced while still being clean. We were very impressed! The wings, however, were kind disappointing to me. Interestingly, the pieces are half a flat - as though you took a flat and cut it between the bones so its 1 bone surrounded by meat. I loved the idea because it could maximize sauce to meat ratio! However, what actually ended up happening is that the meat was dry, the breading of the wings was thick so it turned relatively stodgy after it was sauced and the sauce itself felt a bit bland. Had a great crunchy texture not only from the fried calamari but also the peppers and onions. We enjoyed the morning glory as a veggie dish (we ate nearly all of it before the entrees even came). The pho hanoi is $21. While my partner felt it was pricey (definitely pricey than delicious phos you can get in Northern VA and Philly), it was a delicious Northern-Vietnam style pho that I would most definitely get again. The restaurant itself was beautiful. We started off with complimentary shrimp chips (4) and steamed rice cakes as an appetizer. These were non-traditional rice cakes as it consisted of little bowls of fried onions, scallion, and shrimp with rice cake on the bottom. Pricey but definitely unique. Everyone ordered the pho ha noi and I got the wagyu pho. I was a fan of the broth but one of my friends thought it was a bit bland. I'm glad I splurged on the wagyu as it was delicious and melted in my mouth. The meal was a celebration so we brought our own cake and tolerated the $15 plating fee. The very first thing that catches your eye is the beautiful mural in the front of the woman which is visible from the street as well. The striking image juxtaposed with the recessed lighting from the light diluted from the umbrellas above gives the perfect ambiance for a romantic dinner or even the set of a move when the protagonist enters a restaurant in a suit to talk to his informant. I really love how the place plays with lighting with the flower lights from the ceiling in the main dining area and the head high lights while walking towards it. Probably why the pictures of the food have the automatic cinematic feel to it. The food was overall good with bold flavors, but a bit too sweet to my liking. However, I do really want to come back to try other dishes. One of my favorite elements was the hot chilies that adorned the dishes and that helped balance the sweetness out. I had made reservations, but we decided to arrive earlier to see if we could do a walk-in instead. It ended up being a one hour wait due to two large parties. We ordered the sugarcane shrimp, pomelo salad, and the pho ha noi all recommended by the bartender. The shrimp dish came with shrimp paste loaf on a skewer, served with lettuce, fresh herbs, and plum sauce. It was nicely presented but nothing stood out about it. The pomelo salad included grilled shrimp, orange, lemongrass, lime, grapes, mint, shallot in a spicy tamarind dressing. This wasn't spicy at all. It was refreshing to eat but the portion felt a bit small especially for the price. The pho was the biggest disappointment. Pretty average and nothing special. Once again the costs of the small pho didn't make any sense. Overall, the food was just average. There are definitely better Vietnamese restaurants around the city that offer more flavor and value. I got the crab fried rice lunch special I chose the complimentary soup I also got the crab shrimp and pork spring rolls and the 888 drink. It was a friend's sister's birthday and my other friend and I decided to crash it. However, we are all very good friends so it wasn't an imposition. We first started at a hotel bar that just opened up and then moved our way to here for dinner. Even though we had a reservation and everyone was present, we had to wait for like a good 15-30 min. The food was good so I do plan on going back here for lunch after boxing one day to try out the pho. I will not be getting any drinks. I got a skinny margarita and it tasted like soap...It is a bit of a red flag when a basic drink cannot be executed correctly. However, we are all about having "eat only" places.
