This was a beautiful Autumn wine country experience. We were enthralled with the wines from the very beginning. The Chardonnay made for the perfect accompaniment for a walk in the vineyard educational area. The gentle golden color of the wine and the rich hues of the vines leaves turning for Fall, along with the fresh crisp air, made for a fine Fall day. I was very impressed with the history that was shared, not only of the winery itself, but of the in-depth story of region, with an emphasis on how Napa, in particular, emerged from the 1976 Paris Wine Competition. All the wines seemed somehow richer surrounded by the history and the setting, but we were in for a further treat.We got a walk through an interesting wine country history by a skilled story teller, and teacher, Jon. It was obvious that he has a background in education, and wrangling high school students to listen and learn. We were fascinated. Treat yourself to the Wine & Food Pairing, it raised the Pine Ridge event far above other wine country days. It will easily replace an average local lunch with a special memory while leaving you ready for a wine country dinner. Here, Chef Susan has masterfully paired 5 tastings to accompany the 5 hand selected Cabernet Sauvignon choices. This sounds simple, but this requires real finesse to match the nuances between the wines, each a work of art own it's own. We were thrilled. Everyone in our group was simultaneously humbled by the craft work of the winemaker and the chef, and giddy to be together for such an experience. All thanks, of course, to our skilled event co-ordinator, Kevin. After all that, we found the Tasting Room staff to be as warm and welcoming and informative as our guide/educator Jon. We found the wines affordable and commensurate with their quality. It was serendipitous the we were looking for a head-turner wine for next Thursday, Thanksgiving. After revisiting a couple of our event tastings, we picked up a few bottles, including their Contemplate, which is sure to be a hit with everyone at our family dinner. Remember, when you're choosing wines at Pine Ridge, get some to enjoy more than a couple of years from now. These are rich, well-structured wines will thrill you to down the road. read more

Didn't have a lot of time..and with the rain we didn't do the tour. That actually makes me sad because I love the tour here that ends in the cave. This place has tours at 12pm, 1pm, & 2pm, but walk-in tastings. Our sommelier was David. We had such a fun time right from the start. Entertaining and informative. I'm sorry, but Napa can be kind of hoity-toity and this place did not feel like that, but the wine is superb. I became a member. I will definitely recommend!! read more

We returned to Pine Ridge on 4/8/18 and toured and tasted with Jon Melone. We had met Jon once before and always enjoy our time with him. We tasted all of their current cabernet sauvignons by appellation; all of them had the distinct character of the appellations and were truly impressive, so we bought them! (I especially like their Howell Mountain Cab.) Jon is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and if you're lucky, you may find yourself tasting great wines with him. We have had good wine here in the past. They still have good wine. My comments focus on service. We came on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. While busy, it was not overwhelming. We got seated quickly. Our host offered us some additional whites to try before we tasted the reds. We enjoyed one of the four and eventually purchased some. However, he spent so much time talking about things other than the wine, the afternoon began to drag. We tasted the rose and liked it. We were then offered three reds and was surprised when we told him we only wanted two of them because we had other appointments. We would have preferred less whites and would have then had the palate to taste more reds. However, by the end, we had tasted too many wines. It took 45 minutes for our host to check out two orders. He had help with gathering the wine. One couple shipped their case and the price charged for shipping was three times the shipping charge we have seen over the last three days of tasting. We elected to carry our wine because of the charge. The other couple could not because they were on a plane. We enjoyed the wine; we did not enjoy the extra time and extra shipping charges. Lots of wineries in the area have good wine; good service brings people back and inefficient service sends people to other wineries. read more

Pine Ridge has some really pretty grounds, including a wine cave that is built into the mountain. The wine cave tour is interesting to see. While the wines are not my favorite, they are good, although I think a little expensive. read more

My good friend invited several of us as guests for the Appellation Tasting that guides you through each of their vineyards. I really enjoyed being off the main trail and having a more intimate experience. I can't speak for the main room, but the smaller tasting room leading directly into the caves was awesome with its darker lighting, comfy seats and great acoustics. Pine Ridge's single appellation Cabernet Sauvignons were fantastic across the board with the star being the 2008 Fortis. A wonderful harmony of dark berry skins, spice and structured tannins. Though the tasting is fairly expensive at $40/person, the quality of the wines really comes through and makes the price very much worthwhile. read more

Took the wifey here for a 90 minute cave tour and tasting for our anniversary and it was great! The wines were great, the wine education was great and the laughs were even better. I held out a year, but I caved and signed up for the Pine Ridge wine club. It was actually the cave that did me in--well that and the wine and my weak will. I took a trip up to Napa with Matt B. and our friend Mike K., and signed us up for Pine Ridge's cave tour, which cost $50 a head, thinking I'd probably get that membership and have our tasting fees waived. (It looks like it's now $60, so hey, more value for me, I guess.) It was a wonderful tour and tasting, led by Bernard, a fantastic guide with a ton of wine knowledge and a dry sense of humor. We started outside, with a splash of wine in the lovely vineyard, then moved through the production area and the deep, beautiful caves, where the wine gets aged and stored. At one point, Bernard gave us all a taste of a not-quite-ready red wine that tasted pretty damn delicious to me. The focal point of the tour was a seated tasting at a table set in the caves--I didn't know this was coming, and it felt kind of magical, coming up on this nice table waiting for us in this quiet place. It felt like a cool secret restaurant, with a few well-placed light fixtures and a display of Chihuly glass off to one side (Bernard informed us that it was once a 29-piece arrangement, but a few pieces had been stolen over the years). We tasted three Cabernets at this table, paired with three cheeses and some crackers and almonds. After that, we went to another tasting room and had a couple more wines, finishing our tasting with a port. This tour confirmed my initial impression, which was that Pine Ridge could do no wrong. I signed up for the membership and got our tasting fees waived, and went back the next day for one last tasting--this one just in the normal tasting room, without an appointment--before we left town. We've already gotten our first 3-bottle shipment, and so far, our only complaint is that the wines are too special to drink without a proper occasion. I'm hoping to get up to Napa again relatively soon, and I look forward to abusing my tasting room rights going forward. read more

This was a refreshingly warm and personal winery. We chose to share a tasting (since we were visiting several wineries that day) and the pours were very generous. The gentleman who poured for us was very knowledgeable and was very attentive - we didn't feel rushed as we did in several other wineries. We loved the wines we tried and appreciate that they have options at different price points. The grounds are lovely with many photo opportunities. Great experience all around. This was my husband and I's first trip to Napa we had just gotten there that Monday and were exploring our first day to all the wineries. Our knowledge of wine was pretty poor until we went to pine ridge and met José!! This trip to Napa was a 40th birthday celebratory one for my husband and I along with our best friends another couple. José made us feel so welcome and got to know us so well he made our first day of the trip so memorable. It really did sculpt our trip from then on because he taught us so much. This review is for the service. Went with friends who are members and were sincerely let down. Took 2.5 hours to get through a tasting because service was so slow. It was busy but for some reason there was no teamwork to take care of the customers. We spent a lot of time sitting and waiting for the guy to come back and pour more wine. A female member of the staff was rude to my wife who asked to shut the doors to the outside because of cool winds that day. Hard to remember the wine because the experience was so irritating. With so many other options in the area, I would skip this one. read more

He is always warm and welcoming, pays great attention, and delivers the Pine Ridge story and portfolio flawlessly. My parents are in town and we decided to wine taste in Napa. Our first stop was amazing...heavy pours and really friendly people. However, coming to this winery it has been the worst service. The guy who is supposed to pour did not introduce himself and walks away after each pour. We are left to mingle amongst each other, which is completely fine because we have catching up to do, but this guy has not tried to converse with us at all. We are actually counting down the tastings until we have to leave. So for $40 I would not recommend. The wine is great but the service was horrible...enough to not want to come back. read more

Hands down my favorite wines of the four Napa tasting rooms I visited. $40 for 5 tastings, I believe it was, with an off-the-menu one and some revisits for good measure. The whites were splendid, especially the Chardonnay (a surprise hit for most of the red-loving group) and the reds varied from rich and bold to subtle and fruity. They had no problem fitting us in unannounced on a Saturday around 2pm and Sarah was personable, friendly, and knowledgable about the wines and the other wineries in the area. And, of course, if you purchase some bottles, they'll waive the tasting fee. read more

Call me a yuppie lovin scumbag, but I love working for rich white guys that are heavy into the grape! We had our company Christmas party here and they started with a cocktail soiree, which contributed to the cloud of classy-drunkenness that I would float on for the rest of my evening. The 2005 Cab had that delicious, cherry-filled tannin that coated my tongue with Napa's exquisite grape-goodness. I'll never forget it. It's like good sex, but liquid & hurling down my palette like an Olympian diver on a mission. First sip we took, my date looked at me, his eyes lit up and said "that's hella good shit right there!" I nodded in agreement and kept sipping. We then had a wine-filled tour of the cave and they informed us of the imported oak aging process they used to age their wines- but - who really gives a shit, just keep pouring. My co-workers and I stooped to all levels of immaturity and cracked jokes in the background during the tour. I'm sure we were really fucking annoying, as we deal with annoying clients everyday to the same magnitude. But, this was our time to return the 'love' & it came in the form of drunken, stifled laughter all because we couldn't hear our tour leader. Not funny *now*, but hilarious *then*. As the night progressed, my boss whipped out the heavy artillery. The "$100.00 mountain juice" (or whatever I renamed it that evening). All I know is that it hit my glass like a slutty stripper w/the sexiest pairs of long, syrupy wine legs I have ever seen... swirling and slithering down the sides of my glass. We paired it with a huge, rare-cooked, tender medallion of fillet mignon, pumpkin risotto and something that I can only define as "brocciflower". It felt sinfully wrong and yet so so right. Good, strong tasty wine & banquet experience here at Pine Ridge. Like, seriously... Bravo! Why am I thinking of all this now when that was 6 months ago?..... ... So, this past week, my date from that evening sold his old car and found some black stockings in his trunk. He handed them to me in a messy, sticky ball and said 'here are your Christmas tights or whatever, I got antifreeze on em, don't bitch' God, I love good wine! (& assholes). read more

In my opinion, Pine Ridge is the worst winery in the Napa Valley. Never have I experienced so many literally undrinkable wines- and the prices are extraordinarily high to boot. A recent visit to try their big Cabernet Sauvignons cost $25; my wife and I tasted the 05 Rutherford ($52), 05 Stag's Leap ($80), 04 Howell Mountain ($85), 05 Epitome ($100) and 05 Charmstone ($37- a blend of 60% Cab and 40% Merlot). We dumped every single one, exchanging glances of disbelief at how horrible the wines were. Aromas and flavors of raisin, vegetable and balsamic vinegar dominate one's palate, suggesting that poor winemaking is to blame. I've tasted at over 250 wineries in the past two years and only at Cakebread have I elsewhere experienced something like this. And please don't just take it from me; Wine Spectator reviewed two Pine Ridge reds from 2005 and gave them low sores. The Merlot Napa Valley Crimson Creek received 77 points; James Laube described it as "Offer[ing] strong herb and pencil lead aromas and firm metallic and roasted asparagus flavors." Sounds yummy to me. The Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District scored 82 and was described as having "smoky vegetal, herbal aromas [that] offer little in the way of ripe fruit." It seems to me that Pine Ridge would best be suited entering the veggie juice market and putting V-8 out of business. Most wineries produce a clunker every now and then, but there's no excuse for widespread abject futility- especially at high prices. I had been to Pine Ridge once before- a little over a year ago- and enjoyed a couple of their wines then. I can only speculate that lackadaisical winemaking is to blame for these current catastrophes. Please, for your palate and wallet's sake avoid Pine Ridge like the bubonic plague and spend your money and time elsewhere. read more

While the wine may be top notch, the service is certainly lacking. I came with friends to celebrate my 25th birthday and the only words I can use to describe the service would be "disengaged, or "aloof" at best. We had to hunt down our sommelier to even so much as describe the wine we were tasting. When she did, she would make comments that insinuated we would never be interested in paying for wine that was ~$150/bottle. Nice wines, nice people. After being dumped on at Cakebread Cellars (1 star - avoid them), we drove to Pine Ridge Winery in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley for a late afternoon tasting. We'd had a bottle of their Chenin Blanc-Viognier at lunch at Market in St. Helena, so thought we'd give them a try. The smooth-talking instant-friend salesman at the tasting bar was smooth-talking and an instant friend. We really enjoyed their wines and ordered some to be shipped home (arrived with a week). With summer ahead of us (please God, we've been waiting SO LONG) we loved their Encantado Rose, which was only $20 a bottle, and plan to consume it on a few 90 degree evenings. No great gardens, no fabulous views. But a really nice winery whose products I'll be looking for in the stores going forward. read more

When a winery offers a tasting that features only one varietal, you can rest assured they aren't f*cking around. In this case, Pine Ridge's featured varietal is Cabernet Sauvignon. So smooth... and well-balanced, complex and just unspeakably good. Get the Andrus if you can afford it. You won't regret it. The rest of us peasants will have to stick to tastings. The peeps are pretty cool here too. After tasting a white which I absolutely abhorred (it fetched 92 points in wine spectator, i apparently fetch ZERO) i blurted out "I HATE THIS." to our server. 1 extra star to the peruvian spanish boy who didn't kick me out for telling him that their white wine current release sucked. read more

Picturesque winery with a knowledgeable and extremely friendly staff, we came here on the recommendation of the folks at Trefethen, which is another amazing winery just a few minutes away. Known for their cabs, their Appellation Tasting ($40) is devoted to them, while their Signature Tasting ($20) includes a variety of whites, reds and blends. Our server, a lady whose name I forgot is a savage when it comes to describing wines. Forget what it says on the menu, just listen to her descriptions as you swirl, sniff and taste. Her words almost seem to enhance every aspect of each wine. It's amazing she's only been doing it for a year or so because the girl knows her shit. read more
