Our Chimney Rock host, Mike, did an excellent job guiding us on a private tour around the property and explaining everything about their brand. Lots to learn. Great Reds. Great views in spots. Chimney Rock is our favorite winery in Napa, after having been there twice and visited both times. If you love great wine and want to have an elevated experience but in an unpretentious setting - then Chimney Rock is for you. It's only 15 minutes from Downtown Napa and is absolutely beautiful - both inside and out. The staff are the most accommodating and down-to-earth group of people, and go above and beyond to make sure you have a stellar experience. Our reservation was with Gary this time, after he received a glowing review from our friends who had just visited a few weeks prior. Boy, were they right! Gary made our experience at the winery a 10/10, and we didn't think it could have gotten any better than our last visit 10 years ago, when we wandered in by happy accident on our honeymoon. Gary is knowledgeable, funny, engaging, and easygoing. You could sit at the table with him for 8 hours and not get bored or antsy. His knowledge of wine is unmatched (and we visited 10 wineries this trip), and his stories of world travel and dry sense of humor will make it feel like you're being guided through your tasting by your best buddy. Now onto the wine - absolutely amazing. No notes. The tour takes you through the vineyard and then into the building where the wine is made/stored, and it's a truly fascinating experience. Not every winery takes you that up-close and personal. Each wine is crafted so specifically and thoughtfully. For Napa, the price of their wines is probably right in the middle -- more expensive than some of the mainstream wineries, but not as cost prohibitive as some of the "elite" big names. We ended up joining the wine club, not only because we want to drink their wine in PA year-round, but we also just want to remain connected to the vineyard in any way possible! Truly cannot recommend a visit to Chimney Rock enough -- you will NOT regret it!! read more

Had the opportunity to do a tasting yesterday with my family, and Chimney Rock did not disappoint. While cabs aren't necessarily my first choice, I had a hard time narrowing down which bottle I was going to allow myself to buy by the end of the tasting! Julian was awesome. He was both animated and informative, which made for a great tasting experience throughout. The grounds are very pretty and I love the ground level fountain that stretches from the tasting room to the barrel room. Chimney Rock is a bit out of my price range to be a frequent flyer, but I do look forward to a next trip back down the line. read more

Expectations surpassed! This is a must see experience when in Napa. We did a group tour and hosted event for 30 people. The staff couldn't have been more wonderful. Mike and Adam were engaging as they played out the history of the winery and told entertaining stories while we tasted the most delicious wines. Our event coordinator was on point! I've long wanted to visit Chimney Rock. It's not the most "fun" or innovative tour -- the tasting takes place in the barrel room. However, the caliber of the wines speak for themselves. These are some of the finest Napa cabs I've ever had in 20+ years of visiting Napa Valley. Every wine is complex, expensive, marvelous, eyes back in head type of good. Chimney Rock is legacy Napa -- been around forever -- and the quality (and price) of the wines poured here show. Not cheap, but really a special experience. Just fantastic hospitality as well, I was really impressed by the wines. Definitely in the top 3 of wine quality I've experienced in Napa -- and there are a lot of top notch wineries in the valley! We were so fortunate to have found the vineyard Golf-cart tour here at Chimney Rock and to have Josh as our host! Cruising around the vineyard was so magical and the wines were exquisite. The wildlife was inspiring, especially the birds and the turtles, and I loved the dedication to sustainability with their "Deep Green" mentality. My wife always goes and tastes with friends and I usually just receive the wine at home but alas I was able to pop in and get a taste but it was quick because we had another appointment to make, but I will be back to enjoy a relaxing tasting and the beauty of the old architecture and site. As CR members, we were VERY disappointed. We visited CR last week--June 11th--for a tasting. We've been members since 2015 and have spent probably $10K+ getting their wines. We went to the tasting room and essentially we were ignored. Our host took us to the tasting room and gave us wines to taste, but she spent minimal time with us. The hosts for 2 other tables sat with their guests and we could overhear them telling CR's history and the quality of the wines they were tasting. The experience you would expect and the experience we received at every other winery we visited (members or not) last week. When those other tables--guests and hosts--left, we were in the tasting room alone. We figured our host was not coming back so we left. And when we checked out with her, she didn't seem to have any idea how she treated us. They weren't busy so that's not the reason for the poor treatment. We've even been on an Oceania cruise with Elizabeth, the wine maker for CR. As loyal members this was a huge disappointment for us. read more

Some wineries are all business. Chimney Rock has been a lot of fun activities, superlative wine, and great people that I've had contact with over the past two-plus decades. The dinners there have been outstanding events: excellent food and wines, and the people we've shared our table with. We first discovered Chimney Rock in the mid-1990s and quickly learned to appreciate their estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a mix of CS, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petite Verdot. Their 2021 Stags Leap District Cabernet is Wine Spectator's #5 wine of 2024 -- and I ordered a case last year when it came available. My wife and I were wine club members and immensely enjoyed the functions, dinners, wine tasting that club membership affords. We've won several awards for mixing varietals; my wife -- an artist -- won several awards for best label for the wine our table of wine club members formulated (2005: "Sneak Preview" label). We carried out a bottle of our mixed wine courtesy of Chimney Rock, and was sent a magnum bottle of the award-winning cab mixture It was always fun to attend these functions -- where one of my favorite wines is made. (Regretably, my wife died unexpectedly in 2020.) Since moving out of state, I stay in touch and visit the winery when I can. Chimney Rock has added a number of bottlings from their Arete, Kesu, Arrowhead, Alpine and Ganymede vineyards since I became a wine club member. So many choices... so little time. But online orders are filled very quickly and shipped usually the next work day after ordering. It's seamless, and the wine club people are very easy to work with -- as my latest shipment has once again proven. read more

We were members here before moving back to Asia, and their service and wine were always top-notch. The staff was always super friendly, and our server today, Talia, was no exception. She was incredibly friendly and made us feel welcome. It's rare to find wineries that are kid-friendly these days, but Talia was so sweet that she even offered them water in the wine glasses, making them feel like they were part of the tasting! We've been to Napa many times, and I'm sad to say this is by far the worst tasting experience I've ever had. It's too bad, because I really liked the wine but wouldn't have considered buying any after the taste of terroir with Ian. It started off with him suggesting we do our seated tasting standing at the bar instead. He was multi-tasking...excusing himself constantly for several minutes at a time before we even got started and throughout the tasting. He poured the first 2 glasses and told us to guess the wine as he scurried off. I left the 60 minute, $70 per person tasting having learned nothing more about their wines, history, process, etc. Unfortunately, the only facts that were shared by Ian were his political views. 1st visit there & found it to be quite pleasant. It may not have the reputation of Stags Leap nor the massive cave in Jarvis, but it has its inherent architectural charms. The outdoor tasting area behind the main building was gorgeous, lined with comfy lounge chairs with overhead umbrellas to protect guests from the sun. There was also a patio seating area but with very limited overhead shades. The water fountain in the center of the concourse was quite soothing & zen. It was a scorching day so our tasting was done inside an AC warehouse. The wall was adorned with prob over 100 empty French oak barrels, perfectly stacked Bristol fashion. The interior was quite spacious, you can fit 10 tables 6 feet apart and still have enough room for intoxicated guests to dance. Its prob a good venu for a small to mid size wedding reception. We are not wine connoisseurs so will not make any judgements. For some reasons we preferred the 2017 South Hill & the 2016 Arrowhead over the other more celebrated vintage. We found them to be more light & refreshing. read more

Since I haven't reviewed Chimney Rock since 2014, and I recently visited, I figured it was time to update my review. I stand by what I wrote then about Chimney Rock always being a fun time. I didn't have my dog with me this time, but dogs are still very welcome. All the wines are estate grown and as you make your way through a tasting, they will show you on a map where the grapes were grown. I was thrilled to learn about the female wine maker and learn more about the owners. Since I currently live in Indiana, shipping wine that retails in Indiana to Indiana is a no-go. While chatting with my host, he mentioned he learned this a few years ago when the sons took over and had to re-license in every state to sell their wine since the licenses were previously held in their father's name. This was the first time I tasted in the barrel room. I highly recommend doing a tasting in the barrel room. It's just so beautiful. My host was very conversational and ended up grabbing a few extra wines for me try beyond the standard tasting. I tend to end a day of wine tasting at Chimney Rock, not just because of the full-bodied reds, but also for the atmosphere. And I'm really glad I did this time too because instead of the standard hour and a half tasting time, I ended up spending three hours here. What seems to have changed in the last 10 years is that you'll want to make a reservation. Tasting fees have also gone up. Expect about $70 for a tasting. read more

A beautiful winery to visit! Our party made last minute plans to Napa and we were able to book an outdoor tasting reservation through their website without any issues. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a friendly staff member manning a table under an umbrella (in 108° weather!!) full of hand sanitizers, liability waivers, pens, and a container to dump used pens in. Once we signed the waivers, she directed us to a mini sink off to the side so we can wash our hands. As we waited for our table, we enjoyed spending time in the nice air conditioned room. We were then greeted by another staff member who led us to our table in the patio. The outdoor area was really nice with awnings to provide shade and a nice water feature we all wished we could dive into because of the heat. Tables were spaced out between parties so it didn't feel like there were a lot of people. We booked the Seasonal Selection tasting, which was $60 a person. We received personalized menus too, which was a nice, thoughtful touch! It came with 5 different wines to taste (1 rose & 4 cabernet sauvignon). The rose was 100% needed for the hot weather. It was really refreshing! The cabs all tasted really good as well, each tasting different from the other. The 2013 Tomahawk cab was our favorite of the day. I highly recommend! I was overall impressed with Chimney Rock's COVID protocols, as they made us feel comfortable and safe. TL;DR: Delicious variety of Cans. Impeccably well kept property. Stunning views. Family owned hospitality. We joined the Chimney Rock wine club in the summer of 2020 when wine tasting was one of the only things you could do safely. From our first visit to our last the service and wine are always divine (I rhymed on purpose). They have several different types of grapes produced on property that make up some of the delicious Cabs I've ever had the chance to savor. A crowd favorite and also super unique is their Cab Franc rosé. Most Rosé is made with a blend of grapes and typically heavy on the Pinot Noir grape. The Cab Franc rosé is unique in that it's entire made up of delicious Cab grapes and has a rich pink hue unlike other rosés. They sell out of it fast so I'd suggest stocking up. Overall a great stop on your next Napa Valley wine trip. read more

My husband has been wanting to come here for so long, and we finally made it. Well worth the wait!! Absolutely beautiful property and such a nice tasting. I can't remember our hosts name but she was wonderful, she gave us some extra wines based on our tatses from discussion. Our favorites were the Rose of Cab Franc, seriously one of the best roses I've ever had! A rich color, and very complex flavors. She let us try a 2012 Arrowhead to compare to some of the other cabs, and that was a favorite too, we ended up taking both home. The Ganymede and Tomahawk were also some of my favorites.
