We booked through Expedia. I have no issue with a vehicle that's not pretty, but the silver Honda Odyssey we rented wasn't particularly safe. Wiper blades were old and left big streaks when it rained. Wiper fluid was out, so my visibility was poor and I didn't feel comfortable driving it at night, the headlights were really dim. Driving around on an island where it rains often, I really think having functional wiper blades is a low bar to clear. The sliding doors were really difficult to open, very sticky and our kids struggled to open them themselves. The locking mechanisms were weird and no buttons on the key fob worked. So disappointed in this company. We made a human error and had to cancel our reservation entirely, so we called and were honest and they would absolutely NOT cancel our reservation. They still charged us a fee, even though they were not available on the phone during normal business hours when we tried canceling days in advance. Awesome experience with these guys. At first the shuttle from LIH to the rental place took a while, 35 minutes. But they made up for it by giving me and my girlfriend an upgrade SUV vehicle at the same cost as a sedan. I received the car with a full tank and clean interior. There was no line like these other rental places. I recieved my car within 10 minutes of arriving. I needed to make last minute changes to the reservation and extend the car rental and they were very helpful and accommodating. Dropping off was simple. I had to drop off after hours and all I needed to do was drop the keys in a box and Uber to the airport since they don't do shuttles at night. Wow! Never heard of rent-a Wreck Kauai before this past weekend, but it turnabout to be a Godsend! There were no cars available elsewhere for less than 75$ per day, so I decided to try these. The car was clean and sturdy, a few small blemishes, but reliable with good AC! We were able to drive all over the Koloa area and Lihue, had a wonderful vacation, safely and without breaking the bank! Also no long lines to check in and out. The very best thing was dealing with the staff- Pietr and Adele were so kind, accommodating and friendly. Didn't make me feel like 'another tourist-customer.' If you're looking for the best way to get around on Kauai and still have money to spend on the things that matter, (dinners out, adventures, etc.) rent a wreck is the best way to roll! Not at all inviting for someone to target for a break in like most of the rentals here. The best part was when I rolled up to RedSalt restaurant and handed the key to the valet. "Take special care of this one and don't put too many miles on it " I said with a wink. The valet driver was awesome - he parked it in a VIP spot. I even got a selfie with him when we were leaving. $1260/week wreck Key points: * A critical feature and an important convenience feature are not working * Does not take customer's key needs into account * Pick up location far from Airport (20min walk I tested) * Give 1 more star because they offer a ride from the rental place back to airport Details I paid $1260/Week for a 2009 Odyssey. The price is high and the car is in bad shape (my 2009 Accord is in a much better shape). The main problem is the curb side sliding door cannot open, which is a safety issue for my family. My family has an infant, a kid and 3 adults. Without the curb side door, we have to enter and exit from from the road side door. 5 days in, they offered a replacement car. But they refused to deliver the car to us. Picking up the car will cause me 1.5 hours minimal. Terrible deal for a tourist. I refused the offer. The audio system was locked and they cannot give us a working code to unlock. A dead silence week for us. At the end, they did not offer any discount/partial refund as such. The only thing they do is to give me a lift back to airport. I spend 20 minutes to walk to their pickup location. I should have took a taxi because the day is hot and I have to walk on the shoulder of the street (not safe) for most of the journey. read more

Good-bye to our ghetto-fabulous Toyota Echo old rental car from Rent-A-Wreck . All windows and doors had to be manually rolled down and locked, no radio, gas valve door was missing, scratches and dents all over the car. We were bouncing in our car ride when we encountered a bump in the road But we loved it, as we loved everything about our very inexpensive budget vacation. We drove all over the island for 5 days and only had to fill the tank once at the end, costing a whoppin' $23.88 . 5-day rental car for $175. (Last time I was in Kauai, 6-day rental car cost me about $370). Get outta town. They are a charming couple, recently transplanted from South Africa, and from first contact to airport dropoff, they provide excellent customer service. Clayton picked us up and dropped us off at the airport- the location is a short distance away. Our old two-door Toyota Echo (over 100,000 miles) had dents and scratches, manual windows, non-working radio, a large trunk for luggage, A/C (not all of their cars do), and got us all over the beautiful island, 4 days for $180.00 cash, plus the cost of gas. We had a great experience with Rent a Wreck Kauai. They were so great to communicate with and everything worked out perfectly. Our flight landed at 10pm. After a long flight and since it was a beautiful evening, we just walked to their office right from the airport. It's about one mile and I rolled my suitcase along with me, no troubles. We did the same on the return flight, I was dropped off at the airport with the bags and my boyfriend dropped off the car and walked back to the airport. Take the negative reviews you are reading with a very large grain of salt - I suspect they had loftier expectations than they should have - it's possible they never saw the name of the company? While the car did have panel lights illuminated, I never once doubted that it would get me where I needed to be -- and sure enough, it always did. You don't need a deposit to secure the rental My rental took a few exchanges by phone before it was finalized. I contacted them by phone a few days before getting to the island. Mike told me the price was $25/day with no extra fees even though I'm younger than 25. Other places have a daily fee for drivers and renters under 25. He had to go so we hung up and decided to secure the rental in our next phone call. Later on during our next phone call he told me that it's busy season so they're surging their price to $30/day. I decided not to secure a rental with them and look elsewhere. So then he contacts me a couple of days later by text and asks if I'm still interested in renting with them to which I declined. That's when he offered $25/day again! I changed my rental dates and he said it's all fine. He said to secure the rental over the phone so I did and I was set. I didn't need to give my card number over the phone. Just make sure I have my insurance, payment, and driver's license when I pick up the rental car. He offered a ride to the facility but I didn't need one. It was quick and easy to pick my car up. I got a ride to the facility, waited 5 minutes, and Mike was there. I sign paperwork, pay my dues, and I then on my merry way. Final price was about $26/day but that's still cheap compared to the big name car rental companies at the airport. I had a choice among 3 cars at the facility so I chose the Suzuki Aerial hatchback. The service engine light was on and I asked Mike about it but he said to ignore it. That light stayed on the whole time until I returned the car but I never had any technical problems with the car. Car wasn't spotless clean but that's okay because I was sandy/muddy 75% of the time that I drove it so I didn't have to worry about getting my rental car dirty. It already was. When I was exploring all the nooks, buttons, and compartments in my car one day, I did find a nug of weed in the ash/coin tray of the car. He probably missed it when he cleaned the car. I threw it out. You can drive anywhere on the island except past the Navy base because you might get your car stuck on the dirt road at Polihale. I didn't mind since I had connects that have 4x4s. But if you must drive on a dirt road, consider renting a 4x4 for yourself. I returned the car with the gas filled up and my deposit was returned to me. Reserving the car was a game of timing and bargaining. The car had a lot of character. So if you're high maintenance then don't rent from them. But if you're chill and looking for a great daily rate then you've found your place. read more

My wife and I booked with rent-a-wreck for 5 days. On the last day of our trip, in the morning we were involved in an accident. We called the emergency number at rent-a-wreck to inform them of our collision. The owner himself answered before opening hours. Despite being on the opposite side of the island he made his way to us within 15-20 minutes. He was extremely kind to talk to and made sure we were OK. Our vehicle was not in driving condition and they were all booked up with rental cars and didn't have any replacement vehicle for us. However the owner, knowing it was our last day on the island offered us his own personal vehicle to drive! That was very generous and thoughtful and speaks to the company's above and beyond customer service in handling emergency situations. Because he offered us his personal car my wife and I were back on the road and were able to drive up to the canyon as planned to enjoy our last day! That meant a lot to us.
