What happened to this place? The pastries at this place are the best, I've going here for decades but over the last few months it's like they stopped caring. Anytime I needed a cake, pastries, natas (custard cups), bread, anything -- this was the place. Back in May I bought an Oreo cheesecake for niece's birthday, we found a hair in it. The hair was about an inch and a half long, reddish-brown, and coarse, possibly from someone's beard GROSS! Threw that cake out. Today we got some bagels, their ovens must be broken because they were under-baked wads of dough. When I say under-baked, they were white with no hint of golden brown. They need some quality control and to get someone in there that cares about maintaining the standards that this place had for decades but now just doesn't seem to care. Rather that trying do everything, maybe they should cut back on the variety and focus on doing a smaller selection well. read more

We went for lunch. Very inexpensive, very fresh, great sandwiches on great bread. We had the custard cups and they were outstanding. We had some other baked goods that were comparable to other bakeries... Best deal around. HIghly recommended. Very efficient service when we went - it was not crowded. I ordered a red velvet cake for a church event. I found out about this place because a coworker purchased one to celebrate another coworker's birthday. Let me tell you.... Ordered my step daughters engagement cake from Pinho's s little over a year ago it's was beautifully decorated and it was delicious.. fast forward to July 2020 ordered an engagement cake for my step son. I placed the order 2 weeks ago and gave them an exact time that I was picking it up. Upon my arrival the counter person couldn't find it ... 10 min. Later she says they are finishing it up. When she bought it out I could have cried . It looked horrible nothing like the one I ordered previously. It look like I could have decorated it myself. Obviously it wasn't ready and it was decorated while I was there, I'm pretty sure the regular cake decorator did not decorate this cake. I had no choice to purchase it I had 50 people showing up for a party. To make matters worse another customer was waiting for a strawberry shortcake also custom decorated. When they bought his cake out his reaction was the same as mine shocked over what he was being given his exact words were this is not what I ordered but OK I need it.. it was a huge disappointment not exactly sure what happened but I think I'll rethink were I purchase my next special occasion cake. I will not recommend using this place for special occasion cake decorating. You're better off with a ShopRite cake, they did a very poor job with my daughter sweet 16 cake, I special order 4 dozen mini donuts for her sweet table and the time they delivered my cake they texted me NOT called but texted me sorry we gave your donuts to another customer. Didn't bother to replace the donuts with anything else because the manager had to attend her own personal function. Ruined my sweet table and to top it off when I saw my daughter undesirable cake it was smudged!!! read more

Had a cupcake cake from Pinho's today at work for my boss who's getting married on Saturday. The Chef did a GREAT job translating my rather vague idea for decorating into a wonderful cake. Cupcakes were delicious -- everyone liked the idea. Got GREAT service as always from everyone at Pinho's on Saturday when I placed the order and Sunday when I picked up the cake. The place is a little gem! Third time there and this is now my new go to bakery. We have tried a variety of pastries from here: rolls, donuts, custard cups, babka, cookies, etc. Everything is delicious! Rolls are crusty as all good bread should be. Their chocolate and cheese babkas are nice and moist. And the custard cups are amazing! While the wait is a little long sometimes (this place always seems busy), it is definitely worth it. Love this Place! The bread is sooooo good and fresh for having breakfast in the morning I can't stand the processed preservative filled stuff at Super markets any more. I know this place is known for the sweets, but as I learn more and more about food, I appreciate Mom & Pop shops that still do things the old fashioned way. Picked up my mom's birthday cake here. They did a great job decorating it and it was delicious. The price was pretty fair too :) The only thing I didn't like is that I had to stand on a long line to pick it up. There was a spot for cake pick up but you can't get to it without standing in the order line. It was the day before valentines day so that probably had something to do with the crowd. It gets busy, and food orders sometimes take longer than usual but that isn't really the bakery's problem. But the service attitudes, brings it down to a 4. With so many Bakeries closing I'm so thrilled to have one of the best in the neighborhood. I've been going to Pinhos for years and everytime I have a celebration to go to, or just a picnic I will stop by and bring some of the goodies and pastries they have, my guest have never said anything negative and always compliment the delicious baked goods. I know they are always busy but the line moves so fast and the workers are so helpful and courteous. I bought a cake from this bakery a couple of months ago and I ordered chocolate cupcakes that were phenomenal. Around Thanksgiving, I went there to place an order for a pie. Well the lady at the counter told me that there were plenty of pies on display and insisted that I buy one of the pies instead of ordering a fresh one. I told her that I DO NOT want any pastries or pies from their display because there were gnats and flies flying all over it and not to mention, customers leaning over and breathing on it. YUCK! She didn't like my response and had a bit of an attitude afterwards so I didn't bother to spend my hard earned money there that day. They should come up with a solution to cover their goods because not all customers want to have flies and gnats walking all over their food and laying eggs. I know I don't. A couple of months ago, I also saw the cook on the other side cooking my sandwich without gloves and she scratched her hair. I don't know if it was my nerves after seeing that but after I ingest that sandwich, my stomach was quite queasy and I use to always order my sandwiches from there. Great bakery with a HUGE selection. We always order cakes here for parties (birthdays, christenings) and everyone always eats them up and begs to know where we got them from! I got a cannoli cream cake for my wedding and it was superb. For my daughters events we always get chocolate cake with chocolate pudding and whipped cream icing. So moist and delicious. This review is based on the fact that Pinho's Bakery is NOT authentic Portuguese and really lacks in customer service. Portuguese people judge Portuguese bakeries based on one thing, the Pasteis de Nata or what Pinho's Bakery calls "Custard Cups". The Pasteis de Natas at Pinho's Bakery is a misinterpretation versus the real thing and really does lack taste, I guess that's why they call it a "Custard Cups" and not Pateis de Natas. If that's the case, then Pinho's an American Bakery selling Americanized Portuguese pastries. If anyone wants to try a real Pasteis de Nata, visit Teixeira Bakery in Newark (the Ironbound) on Magazine and Kossuth St. I have not tried the other baked goods because if Pinho's can't produce a decent Pasteis De Nata, the other Portuguese baked goods they sell will be Americanized and not worth the money. I have been to many Portuguese Bakeries and this was the first one that separates the Deli and pastry section, which causes an inconvenience towards the customer since there is two separate lines the customer has to wait on and the customer service is different on both sides, very similar to the local DMV. The customer service on the pastry side is decent but the Deli is just horrible. The owner must not be around often because the people who work in the Deli make it well known that they do not like each other and their jobs, making it quite unbearable for the paying customer. Myself and my wife have both experienced this at Pinho's, but my most recent visit there, MDW 2014, just topped anything I experienced there in the past. Here's my experience ... I order two toast mistias (similar to a panini), one with turkey and cheese on a croissant and one with ham and cheese on a roll. The lady that took my ordered literally rolled her eyes while I was ordering as if I was annoying her that I ordered a toast mistia on a croissant. I notice the attitude so I said nicely "Please put the turkey and cheese on a croissant" and she brushed me off. I said to myself "maybe she's having a bad day". I waited near the Pick-up area (which is near the "deli line", and witnessed an argument between two employees... in front of the cash register, and in front of all the customers on line. As the employee that was being reprimanded walks away, the cashier rolled her eyes while assisting the customer and bad-mouthing the other employee. She said such things like "this always happens, shes an idiot, ect." It also seems as if the employees enjoy bad mouthing their co-workers in Spanish as well as Portuguese. Perhaps not all customers understand, but again, for those of us who do, it gets a bit uncomfortable, and uncalled for! I do not recommend this Bakery to anyone. I do recommend Teixeira's Bakery in Newark (as mentioned above) since that's the Holy Grail of Portuguese bakeries if you are willing to take the drive for decadent pastries, or are in the area. I also recommend Two Costas Bakery in Linden, since it is pretty decent (environment, food, and pastries), and only a 5 minute drive from Pinho's Bakery- it is literally down the street from there! read more

I really don't hesitate to give Pinhos a 5-star review! First and foremost, the owner Julie is a hands-on, strong, successful woman who knows how to keep her business in tip-top shape. Their desserts are fantastic, and there's always a wide selection available. I'm a teacher in Elizabeth, and one evening, I called to make sure they were open, so I could pick up some "goodies" for my class, but Julie (who answered the phone) told me to go, that she'd open the store when I got there, as they were closing that very second. I couldn't thank her enough. When I got there, she (literally) unlocked the doors and let me into the bakery. I picked out what I wanted, and was ready to pay. Julie said that the register was powered down, but to take the receipt and come back and pay her some other time. I was amazed that this woman, who didn't know me from anywhere trusted me to do that. I asked her if she wanted to at least take down my information, etc. Her exact words were, "What am I going to do if you don't pay me? Chase you down? I've been in this business long enough, take the desserts and come back and pay me when you can". Of course, I went back the very next day and settled it. Hah, if you only knew... I am very uncomfortable with borrowing stuff, and 'pay later deals', just not my style. I told my husband about this and one day, we were going to pick up dessert for a family get-together, he happened to see Julie and told her about me "his wife, the teacher from Elizabeth that picked up desserts after she closed down the bakery" and she remembered who I was. I am forever amazed at her strength, and the conversation we had that night, after 7, when she reopened the bakery for my students. It was very, very sweet. The cheese and apple filled turnovers are the best. The Portuguese bread is amazing. There is a wide fruit "goodies" selection, a great chocolate selection, canolis, Sesame Street character cookies (students love it), cheesecakes and their sandwiches are AMAZING (lunch). I must say that I have always found this bakery to be reasonably fairly priced and that the staff have been nice enough. However, I had a terrible recent episode with unpalatable food about a week ago. A deli sandwich was not fresh and tasty and the bread was very hard. Also there is a group of retired men that sit around talking profanely about nearly any topic that comes to mind- Roselles version of the view. I wasn't going to say anything but the next time I came in a counter woman was so rude from the moment she started serving me. The situation deteriorated and she began yelling at the top of her lungs at me. I can't believe that this woman hasn't had other issues. This is by far the best bakery in Union County! They are always busy. If you go on a Sunday morning, expect a line. Try to go earlier on a Sunday as they do run out of certain items. They have such a variety of breads, pastries and cakes, that you will have a hard time making a choice. I highly recommend the custard cups, cherry turnovers and powered twists. The mini Portuguese rolls are good with butter and your morning coffee. If i ever move out of Jersey i would definitely miss this place. read more

I've been a La Bonbonniere addict looking for the next new bakery hotness in central NJ for a long time. La Bon's brown derby cakes will always be the freshest and the bestest, but at ~$70 for a 6" round, it gets steep when my family's celebrating three birthdays, mother's day & father's day within a 3 month time span. I hopped into Pinho's after hearing it via word of mouth and this place was POPPING on Father's day. The line was practically out the door. I didn't order the cake in advance, and with cakes that are pre-made and sitting in the window, you're definitely taking your chances. Trying to choose from their impressive-looking selection was like trying to find the peanut m&m in a dump truck of regular m&ms (aka the peanut ones are the best.), but I got the carrot cake for $13 and it was so worth it. It had interesting little pineapple pieces in it - I just wish I didn't put in the fridge for an hour or so because then the frosting would've been nice at room temperature. Been to many other bakeries, but Pinhos is a step above them all. There are many offerings daily and the prices are reasonable compared to other bakeries. I have ordered two tier birthday cakes that cost $60 to $75 here vs $250 that other bakeries charge my friends. Very busy locale which speaks to the quality. The Owner Julie is a wonderful person who is very kind and accommodating. Not many bakeries around this area, but there is no need to seek out someone else. read more
