I've been in here a couple of times, since it is across the street from my favorite Italian deli, Massimo, on Kenilworth Boulevard. Everything looks picture-perfect. I tried three of the mousse pastries: the chocolate mousse, the hazelnut, and the raspberry. The raspberry gel icing was gummy, but the other two were delicious. They have a good selection of fresh-baked breads. I went with the sourdough, which was really good with a chewy texture and crispy crust, although not as "sour" as some sourdough bread I've had. The server behind the counter was very friendly, and made stopping in a pleasant experience. I look forward to trying more of Bella Palermo's baked goods. read more

A neighbour recommended this bakery to me. I came in to buy a box of assorted cookies and slices cake for Sunday dessert. I love to support local businesses especially in this tough times. Was really looking forward dessert. Ugh, Cookies were harder than hockey pucks. You could not even bite into them. Not fresh at all. Lacked flavour. super disappointing and a waste of money. We also bought a piece of Opera cake, a carrot cake and a cannoli puff. The opera cake and carrot cakes were both hard, dry and stale. We took one bit of each and disposed of them. Cannoli puff was average at best. Filling was tart. Pass on this place. Definitely would not return. read more

Ordered a tres leches, lobster claw, cannoli type pastry and a cupcake. I should have known something was wrong when the nice counter girl asked me if I wanted my tres leches with pineapple or caramel filling..say what? Tres leches has no filling its milk cake, I know this because I make it at home but I thought what's the harm in trying something a new way. Came home to find the container with the tres leches had leaked all over the bag. Upon inspection realized they had put the cake and milk sauce in a cracked container and instead of replacing it they just added another container on top. To me that shows such lack of pride in your establishment, do it right the first time, what does a container cost you 25 cents? The fruit on top of the tres leches was gross, strawberry was shriveled up and peach was canned..they weren't going for freshness I suppose.. The cupcake was dry and the frosting was really thick..my 6 year old did not even finish it and she LOVES cupcakes. Lobster claw was inedible, the pictures don't lie. The top of a lobster claw is suppose to be flaky and airy but this one was so hard and rubbery it tasted like it had been sitting on display for at least 12 hours. I will not be coming here again. I spent $11 on four pastries that eventually ended up in the trash. If this bakery can't do a simple cupcake or tres leches then I would hate to see what their specialty cakes taste like..thanks but no thanks. read more

Yesterday afternoon I stopped in to get a few pastries to take home. I ordered a pound of cookies, a large chocolate chip cookie, and two napoleons. The service was good, the lovely woman who waited on me wore a mask, and the other patron in the store respected the newly established rules of social distancing. Everything was progressing nicely until I tried the large chocolate chip cookie. It was beyond dry and obviously NOT FRESH. When I arrived at my place of residence, I tried the cookies and napoleon, experiencing similar results as I did with the chocolate chip cookie. I don't know when this bakery opened its doors for business, but I assume it was recently. However, that doesn't give them the license to peddle baked goods that are STALE. I called the bakery to order a cake for my moms birthday and asked for a Fall themed seasonal style cake with banannas, well when i picked up the cake and brought it home i opened the box and a horse fly flew out of the cake box,i was like holy shit!!! For real!!!! On top of that the cake colors looked like a circus themed side show!!!! So we had no where else to go to replace this cake, so we cleaned off the spot on the cake where the fly was sleeping and cut the cake just to see how it was inside, well the bannanas were rotted black!!! Bottom line is we tossed the cake in the garbage! The next day i called the bakery to tell them what happened and i think a child answered the phone and asked for a manager they said no one was here but me, i told the kid what happened and she started laughing at me and started cursing in spanish, so i hung up in disgust!!! I have purchased the cream rolls on 3 separate occasions. They taste good but they are only half filled with cream. I kept thinking that maybe it was a mistake so I bought them again hoping that this time they would be full. Not so. Since they are very pricey, I was very disappointed. I also purchased a strawberry short cake and a chocolate mousse cake for a birthday party. The strawberry cake was delicious but the chocolate cake had a strange spice in it that made it disappointing. No-one liked it. I threw half the cake out. read more

My family always spoke so highly of the Bella Palermo in Elizabeth. When this one opened in Kenilworth, I was pretty excited to try it out! And now that I have, all I can think is... man, I really hope the one in Elizabeth is better than this. The Napoleans are usually stale, with dry, waxy pastry layers and rubbery custard filling. Ditto on the St. Joseph's Pastries. Eclairs are always soggy and/or chewy; neither of these attributes should be found in an eclair. The Tiramisu Slice used to be really good, but these days they tend to use less coffee syrup and more buttercream, making it drier and overly sweet. I've tried other miscellaneous pastries as well, and they've ranged from "Eh" to "Not That Great". The only thing I've tried here and really liked are the biscotti - they were actually very good! There's also an almond-y pastry with raspberry jam filling that's quite tasty. The cannolis are decent, too. I feel really bad leaving such a bad review for this place... but sadly, I just can't give it a better rating. It's been a series of disappointments. Going forward I'll run in here to grab some biscotti when I'm in the area, but that's about it. read more

This is my go to bakery when I need my sugar fix. Located in Kenilworth, parking maybe a challenge but it is worth it. So many to choose from and they are all so delicious. I really like this bakery; the only reason I only gave 4 stars is that it's small and not really fancy enough to sit down and eat with a friend. However, whatever I tried so far was delicious (creme brûlée, almond crescent and a pie shaped raspberry jam filled pastry with pine nuts on top - yummy.) I plan to go back and try more, since they have so much on display. I read other reviews and some people complained it was not fresh: well, maybe some items are not entirely fresh, but they are not stale either. If you want your pastry completely fresh, you should special order it. read more

They have an assortment of typical bakery goods like cookies, bread, cakes and pastries however, not satisfied with their cakes. But thought to give them another try to change that point of view by purchasing their popular, dulce de lucce - caramel cake for Easter and we thought it was stale and had to throw it out. It's a good bakery, I don't really buy my pastries here, but I have had some and they are good. I am reviewing about the Empanadas. (Beef or Chicken) The Absolute Best, hands down. Always so fresh, not greasy, perfectly filled, nice crispy crust. Anytime I am having people over or going to a get together, I order them. We have been going for years and were "regular" customers on large holidays, etc. However, after our last experience with Bella Palermo, we will not be going back. I ordered a cake for my son's birthday party, and it was NOT inexpensive. However, when we cut the cake, we discovered they made the wrong flavor of cake. When I called to complain, they made me BRING IN the leftover cake (which we had served anyway, b/c it was all we had at the party, although there was some left), and then asked me if I still had the order form! Then they told me they would give me a 10% discount on the NEXT cake I ordered from them. Needless to say, I will not return to claim that 10% discount. There are plenty of great Italian bakeries in the area and I don't need to patronize this store. The customer service completely turned me off. read more

Usually I shop the store in Elizabeth, which is Great. Everything in there is good. Although their products are mostly Italian, I'm of Portuguese descent, and I think their "Pasteis de Nata" are the Best to my surprise I must say. Never thought I would find Pasteis de Nata as fresh and good tasting in New Jersey let alone in Kenilworth. I'm a very happy customer. Keep up the good work please. read more

I wanted to bring something special to several family members I was visiting for Christmas. I remembered how wonderful the cookies from Bella Palermo were when I ordered them for my daughter's wedding, so I thought they would be just perfect for this occasion. I bought a total of six pounds of cookies. Never have I been so upset and disappointed. The fruit filling in the cookies was so hard that it was impossible to chew them. We ended up spitting them out. Many of the other cookies were also hard and dry, and did not appear fresh at all. I had requested that pignoli cookies be included, but there were only four of these cookies in the entire six pounds. This will be the last time I shop at this bakery. read more
