Boo boo and I were headed to the plainfield donut shop but they are closed on Sundays so stopped by here to bring some items for breakfast. There was a short line before entering. We were overwhelmed with the options but we got box of donuts, an apple turnover, 2 chocolate rugulas, 2 raspberry rugulas and 2 bagels. We took a bite out of everything and think the best items are the coffee roll donut and the chocolate rugulas. The glaze for the coffee roll is was light. We wishes the display case was labelled. This bakery is a Scotch Plains institution. It has been owned and operated by the Cioffi family for over 30 years. Prior to that, Mr. Cioffi was the head pastry chef at Sardi's restaurant in NYC. Now, John, his son Robert, and staff work very hard to bake some of the most delectable treats you'll find anywhere. They are famous for their rugalach, flaky butter pastries rolled with raisins and apricot or raspberry jam, cinnamon and walnuts, or chocolate chunks. At eight to a pound, these little jewels pack a sweet punch, and will put a smile on anyone's face. Their cheese, cherry, apricot, prune, and pecan danish pastries are culinary works of art, and their doughnuts and muffins are picture-perfect. There is always a diverse variety of cakes available, although perhaps some are not the best. However, butter cookies, which are typically dry and crumbly at many Italian bakeries, always taste fresh here. With all the bagel bakeries around here, you might not expect their bagels to be special, but they are. They are shiny and slightly crisp on the outside, and wonderfully chewy on the inside. This bakery is incredible. They have cherry, blueberry, and apple 'pocket pies' that are to-die for! I can't go there and not get them. So flaky and delicious! Large croissants that are buttery, flaky, and perfect. The doughnuts are airy, fluffy, sweet, and also perfect. They also have creative and delicious cupcakes of all kinds of flavors. I love the muffins too, although I've only tried the blueberry, which was great! I've been here four times now. All four visits Something's been wrong . Example: wrong pies given that I ordered ahead of time for thanksgiving, was already home so just dealt with it . But when I mentioned it to the owner he had nothing to say just went back to reading his paper! Each visit something's been wrong but four stars because what was right was so delicious. The baker is a lovely man and has made several fancy occasion cakes (milestone birthday and my baby shower cake - which was tiered and essentially a wedding cake and exactly what I wanted). The actual CAKE of his cakes is excellent. There is no skimping on ingredient quality here. Both buttercream and whipped cream frostings are delicious. Friendly service always. The lines out the door on the weekend speak for themselves. Get there early for hot donuts. My only wish was that they made black and white cookies. The dough was flaky and buttery, but not greasy, and the filling was so good! There were these chocolate cookies with a chocolate meringue looking dollop on it. My god! Try that IMMEDIATELY! As well as the cookie sandwich with the hazelnut cream (i think that's what it was). Oh! And the carrot cake!!! I'm a stickler for carrot cake. I have it everywhere I go. When you step inside you get pretty excited to see the variety of pastries they have: cupcakes turnovers, bread, frosted and unfrosted cookies, cakes and more! Service was warm and and friendly as well as helpful. I suggest you take their advice. I liked the chocolate cupcakes and the freshly made glazed donuts ( the best simple donut). Just okay. The inside is old the pastry cases are old and scratched up. Everything just looked questionable in terms of cleanliness. Just not inviting or nice to look at. Cake was just okay I could've made it at home with same or better quality. Would not want to sit down and eat here. I know they say they're old fashioned but old fashioned doesn't have to be grimey. You can still be clean and create a good atmosphere. Everyone was nice though. I don't think the lady wore gloves but the cases looked dirty anyway. Overall I wouldn't come back. Recently went back to this place after having moved out of the area years ago. It is as good as I remember. My favorite item is their pine nut (pignoli) tart. Wow is that good. My daughter had the cream puff dipped in chocolate and my son had the eclair. All delicious, as are their brownies, which are dense, moist and ultra-chocolatey. This is an old-school bakery that will bring you back to your childhood (in a good way!). The young ladies behind the counter are really sweet and helpful, and the owner could not be more pleasant. I wish I could give a better review. This bakery is hit or miss. The apple turnovers are excellent. Bought a raisin bun, it was hard and obviously old. Purchased the small yellow cake cupcakes, they were very dry. The items look better than they taste. I always want to support local businesses, but I think I will travel to Westfield for fresh items. I think the issue is that this bakery makes too much product, and they don't sell fast enough, so they sit around and become stale. Suggestion, make smaller quantities, or have daily specials, note what your big sellers are and focus on those. Staff is very nice, but I have been disappointed in the quality. Ok, I returned today, raisin bun was better, but 2 customers walked out for there was only one salesperson at the counter, and the owner was taking a person call on the phone while we waited. Not the best way to treat paying customers, guess he doesn't really care. These guys are awesome. As old as Scotch Plains itself :) They have the best pecan breads and crossaint in the state.

Three things bring my review to this level of delight. 1) the macaroons are as light as a cloud and not overly sweet. 2) the rugelach is incredible! They are moist, flavorful, flaky, and incredibly light. 3) Horse-shoe shaped macaroons covered in almond slices with tips dipped in dark chocolate. Once you walk in the door you are greeted by the delicious sent of baking butter and rising dough. The baker himself is old-school and a delightful man. If you are fortunate enough to be accompanied by a cute adorable little niece you can be sure that your delightful little companion will be offered a free treat! (child palm sized chocolate chip cookie and peanut butter cookie with reese's cup and chocolate icing, just some of the offerings.) (ymmv) In all sincerity, the baker/owner is very friendly and charming and truly knows what he is doing. They are big, delicious, crispy on outside and soft on inside like french bread. They don't skimp on their toppings either.(must get there early they run out,or place order by phone.) Delicious food, reasonable price, awesome, awesome service. So my wife had this idea in mind to reward some volunteers at work. She wanted to put cupcakes in these fancy little boxes. We were tired of getting from the chain cupcake places, where too much is never enough, so we checked on this local bakery. The first thing to explain is that they helped us put the packages together. They took us behind the counter, set us up in a spot and two staff members helped us pack the cupcakes in the boxes we brought in with us. That is amazing service. Later we actually ate a cupcake. Light and fluffy, with a delicate taste! The icing wasn't overpowering-- which is the problem with most cupcakes. It was delicious! And cheaper than at Crumbs and those other places.
