    Swiss Pastry Shoppe's excellent bagels
    Michael K.

This bakery is a Scotch Plains institution. It has been owned and operated by the Cioffi family for over 30 years. Prior to that, Mr. Cioffi was the head pastry chef at Sardi's restaurant in NYC. Now, John, his son Robert, and staff work very hard to bake some of the most delectable treats you'll find anywhere. They are famous for their rugalach, flaky butter pastries rolled with raisins and apricot or raspberry jam, cinnamon and walnuts, or chocolate chunks. At eight to a pound, these little jewels pack a sweet punch, and will put a smile on anyone's face. Their cheese, cherry, apricot, prune, and pecan danish pastries are culinary works of art, and their doughnuts and muffins are picture-perfect. There is always a diverse variety of cakes available, although perhaps some are not the best. However, butter cookies, which are typically dry and crumbly at many Italian bakeries, always taste fresh here. With all the bagel bakeries around here, you might not expect their bagels to be special, but they are. They are shiny and slightly crisp on the outside, and wonderfully chewy on the inside. I'm a bagel connoisseur, and, unlike many cardboard-flavored bagels, these have a subtle, yeasty flavor like a hot soft pretzel. Swiss Pastry Shoppe also bakes a small variety of breads and rolls fresh daily. I like their pumpernickel and challah breads. You will also find seasonal holiday specialties here, like panettone, and beautiful Christmas stollen.

Everything was wonderful. All those pastries and three coffee's for $12!!!! You can tell when food is cooked with love and there is a lot of love in this beautiful food. Well Done! PS- Charlie the bernadoodle also tried the danish and loved it!

Rugelah from the bakery and coffee from our home. Warm when we bought them and still warm as we eat them. Amazing!

First visit since I'm new in town. These raspberry regulach were warm from the oven when I got them and warm as we ate them with coffee. This is our go to bakery now that we know how good it is. And it's a mile from home!

Local place that stays busy all day.. so get here early. It's not uncommon to have a line out the door. Once inside it's hard to decide. Everything is made on site and the aromas are intoxicating! I had a creme filled donut and a toasted bagel. My friend had a hard roll with butter. All was fresh and very tasty. Funny conversation with the bakers is common!..

I brought the decorations and even met with Joe Murphy himself. Joe took down my order, sketched the design of the cake, reviewed the colors, and theme personally. The theme of the party was born 2 ball and I asked for a basketball themed sheet cake with orange and green frosting. First the frosting was pastel pink/orange (see photos) and sea foam green. Clearly nothing like the colors discussed - then the drawing he created was supposed to have the ball decorations cascading down the side. As you can see in the photo it looks like my 2 year old son haphazardly placed them with absolutely no care of design whatsoever. On top of the above disgraceful items when I called I was assured I would be contacted to rectify and discuss that they gave my husband at pick up a cake with THE WRONG COLORS, NO DESIGN, AND DOUBLE THE SIZE ORDERED. I was never called back, there was zero respect or apologies. When I called the girl even said "oh the basketball theme cake" - please take a look and let me know, do you see a basketball theme cake or any care taken at all? Disgracefully disrespectfulI

They have a large display of breads in the display case, but I am not familiar with the names. With the exception of corn bread, the breads looked to have a Spanish background, I also inferred this from the patrons and the spanish newspapers neatly stacked in a corner. I tried to ask what the name of one particular bread was which looked like an "ensaymada", but the attendant was not sure either. Nonetheless I tried it. It was interesting, it had a star anis flavor along with what looked to be black sesame seeds. Nonetheless the place has a neighborhood charm all its own and its a nice place to stop by if you are in Plainfield, on a cold, snowy, day to have a coffee and pastry.

We were greeted as soon as we walked in... and then I quickly realized there were THREE people behind the counter. We were the only ones there for a few moments before another family walked in behind us. They had gone there before so generally knew what they wanted. Me? Not so much. Despite how many people were working at the time, there were no explanations or help... but they do respond to questions. They have a few small tables but it's a relatively small store. There are display cases filled with cookies, pastries, cupcakes, and cakes. Lots of character in there, but nothing is labeled and there are no prices other than the cookies (they're purchased by weight... 1 lb is 10 cookies). I sort of ran with it, but since I don't know the names of half the items, this will be a more general review. I grabbed a lobster tail and a sfogliatelle. They look similar at first glance... but when I asked, they are definitely NOT the same thing. In fact, she sounded a bit offended I asked. Hahaha. She mentioned something about the sfogliatelle being baked? It also comes in two sizes and I got the large. I later ate them and... I'm not too sure what the difference is because they're similar in shape. The lobster tail seems to be a flaky pastry that was cut in half and the cream piped in. The sfogliatelle was not cut but it was filled as well and I'm pretty sure they added orange zest to it... I liked that. The lobster tail didn't have any citrus that I remembered. I enjoyed them... but we ate them the next day. They weren't the crispiest then. Also got two large cannoli's filled with the regular cream. Plus a cream puff filled with "custard" (you can opt for ricotta instead). And an interesting beige white tart and a teeny fruit tart (I actually wanted the bigger fruit tart but they got the mini one instead... I didn't notice until we got home since everything is packed behind the counter). Cannolis were pretty good! Lots of cream and the shells were still crisp, but you could taste the oil since they're deep fried. I should have gotten the smaller size so the proportions would have been more balanced. The cream puff was a cream puff? Nice and light with the thick filling inside that wasn't too sweet. The fruit tart was good with a standard sweet tart shortbread crust. The mystery lattice tart thing was good as well! Not sweet and had very interesting flavors... fairly certain almonds were a part of it. Probably a version of frangipane? My daughter got a Spider-Man cupcake. Their cupcakes have a thin icing type topping instead of your typical piped frosting on top. They're also filled with a buttery frosting that isn't too sweet! I was pleasantly surprised. I was apprehensive when she was adamant on getting that cupcake because they're often overly sweet. I would like to note that a lot of their creams/custard filled goodies use the same filling. And it's not what I expected. Custard, it said. The filling was definitely more dense, not too sweet (a great thing), but also slightly grainy. I can't say they were eggy and they were far from the consistency of pudding. I'm thinking they might be ricotta based? The most loose "filling" we ate was probably the cannoli cream. Overall, I'm not sure exactly what I ate since they never really went the extra step or elaborated when I asked questions. Very to the point for a group of teenagers who were behind the counter. They were nice? But sort of uninterested. They seemed a little more enthusiastic about the other family. Oh yes. I also ordered a coffee for my husband... which wasn't rung up. I went back wondering where it was and it turns out it was forgotten about but we did eventually get it. He got a large and it is a HUGE cup. So... the goodies were pretty good. I was surprised in several ways - the fact I'm not too sure what I ordered and that they were perfectly sweet. But I found service lacking a bit. I will likely go back again if I'm in the area but I'd probably be just as clueless. We would have tried the goodies there and stayed longer but one of my kids has multiple food allergies and the place doesn't seem great for that (or for non-regulars) so we ate them later when our kid could have something as well. The pastries ended up being about $4-5 each and the cupcake was $4.50 - so the total adds up FAST. There is an automatic 3.75% service charge that was added on... not sure what that's about? The total was about $40 at the end, not including tip. My rating is a 3 because though I generally enjoyed the treats I got, I have mixed feelings due to the experience on this first visit as a whole. I'm hoping my future visits will be better.

I haven't tried too many cakes in the area so I can't truly compare to give it a full 5 star rating BUT the comments I hear a lot of is they use fresh fruit in their cakes. I usually get birthday cakes from Asian bakeries where fresh fruit is expected so that was an interesting comment to make from my POV. The fruit birthday cakes I've had from here are pretty good. Not too sweet and the most interesting fruit fillings I've had in cake - banana! Among other fruits. The cake isn't as light/airy as I'm used to but not bad at all. The buttercream is on the sweeter side for me but okay if you eat it with the cake and don't leave it until the end. It's not a terribly thick layer. But the cakes were super colorful and it's a lot of food coloring with how saturated the colors are. Your mouth and tongue will be stained if you're not careful. Having said that, I ordered an Oreo cake because that's why my kid wants. BUT I did request that instead of buttercream on the outside, it'll be whipped cream. Still buttercream on the inside though. I'll update this review after the party as it hasn't happened yet. This is a shop that sort of takes you back when you walk in. It's located in a corner shopping center of sorts and they have a shared parking lot so no need to hunt for parking. It has a nostalgic feel with display cases along much of the length, refrigerated sections for drinks (some were Asian which surprised me) and ice cream cake. Plus a wall of candles and birthday cake decorations because they do take a lot of orders for special occasions. No extra frills and nothing for decor's sake. There was a steady line when I went on Sunday morning. Two doors, one designed to be the entrance and the other the exit (but there isn't a police so use whichever door, but the line starts at the entrance door). As you walk up to the counter, someone will help you out. They've got all sorts of things from pastries to cookies, cakes, cupcakes, cannoli's, pies... even a tres leches section that was woefully empty. The only thing is for some odd reason, there are signs of what the items were, but absolutely no prices were posted in the display cases. At least none that I was aware of. I was passed onto the manager to take my order. It took a little time because I'm pretty sure she also decorates cakes and some people were waiting on them but I eventually got my order in. A 9" Oreo cake (for up to 16 people) with whipped cream exterior and birthday message is about $75. I added on a tres leches on a whim - they sold out early but a new batch just finished so I got one straight from the kitchen - was roughly $10. Receipts are old school, orders taken on a paper pad with a carbon copy given to you. I've had a number of tres leches cakes before and this is one of a kind! Deliciously moist, whipped topping - and the cake is halved. In between, they put fruit in there! Plus a maraschino cherry on top and cinnamon dusted over it. It was nowhere near "too sweet" and I rather enjoyed it. A lot. In fact, I'm thinking of calling in to see if I can get some for the party for the adults. My picky daughter loved it. Overall, I have a pretty good impression of this bakery and I'm looking to trying more items over time.
