I like my dough nuts, and this place makes some very good ones. I stopped in to pick up some buttermilk bars, especially the ones with the maple sugary concoction a top (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/pink-donuts-santee?select=C8dDJzIy9oRfXkxzy2MNrA#C8dDJzIy9oRfXkxzy2MNrA). The buttermilk bar was great. It had that exceptional outside crunchy crust and amber color, not to mention the harden sugar maple topping that went so well with the moist butter center. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/pink-donuts-santee?select=C8dDJzIy9oRfXkxzy2MNrA#uEbT6xZhrZZmiEzs0IAx6w) On the cross section, you cane even see that thickness of the layer of the dough and maple topping. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/pink-donuts-santee?select=C8dDJzIy9oRfXkxzy2MNrA#kthn2Cx5gRzkv59Dk8lMOg) great stuff. They make a variety of dough nuts, including a German type cake bar that I found rather intriguing. I will give it gander on my next visit. The little lady that was present when I came in was super friendly and very sincere. The buttermilk bar cost .90... I like a good dough nut...

They always have my son's favorite, the "batman donut" (that's what he calls a chocolate cake donut with chocolate frosting and sprinkles).

Sadly, Peterson's sold and now are just a mere shell of what they were, making the hunt for a good donut a thing. My wife's colleagues brought in donuts from Mary's, and when she got home and said something about it, I had instant recall of the donut debate from my work. We pulled a late-night donut adventure, and ok East County peeps, you were right, you were right, I said it twice. (I'll still vouch for the old Petersons, but I digress). The staff was friendly here, and quick to point out their favorites, and what they are known for. Having these donuts, right there, just made them that much better than taking them to go.... which we did as well. This is a far hike from Escondido, to Santee, but a drive well worth it. There is a lot of parking in this strip mall/shopping center. The inside is bright and had plenty of seating and counterspace to sit and stuff your face. I will be back Mary's, I'll be back.

The restaurant still feels nostalgic and old school with its decor. I only bought a maple ring and a jelly filled. The good: service was quick. As for the donuts themselves, the dough was very pillow-y on both, and had a nice bite. The ehh: the maple frosting on the donut was very underwhelming, and my jelly filled only had jelly in one quarter of the donut. The donuts left a weird oily or sugary aftertaste lingering in my mouth which I was super grossed out by.

And since they're open 24 hours, I knew I had a good chance of getting something fresh. Let me tell you what I grabbed: Glazed donut Bear claw Sinclair donut BABY... when I tell you these donuts were hitting?! The glazed didn't even make it home. Not even out the parking lot good. You know how sometimes you bite into a donut and it's just... air? Dry? No substance? Not here. These were hearty but still light, fresh without being greasy, and that glaze? Soft and perfectly sweet -- not that dry, crackly, fall-off-in-your-lap situation. Just melt-in-your-mouth goodness. And that bear claw? Stuffed and substantial. They are not skimping on anything over here. The donuts are a really good size too. At $1.75 for regular donuts and $3.00 for the large fancy ones, it's honestly a steal. Now let's talk service. Peter is SO sweet. Great customer service, patient, and he'll happily explain the donuts, ingredients, and menu if you have questions. That kind of hospitality at 1AM? Top tier. I'll be honest -- I'm normally a Sunny Donut girlie... but "Honey Donuts" just took them down and took the crown. If you're ever in Santee and you want fresh, affordable, legit GOOD donuts any time of day (or night), give them a try. You won't regret it. Thank me later. You're welcome.

In fact even if you don't live here you should stop by. You won't regret it. If you want mediocre pastries that do nothing but scratch your sweet tooth, there are dozens of places out there that are happy to do the bare minimum. Donutopolis in Poway is not one of those places. For the same price if not better than their competitors you will received not only some of the best donuts you have ever eaten, from flawless classics to innovative specialties, you will also receive so of the best customer service you have ever had at a donut shop, or most other restaurants for that matter. The staff have made their small corner store into a friendly and comfortable place to pickup treats for your events or sit down for a fulfilling breakfast any day of the week, and with special made-to-order treats for larger events, such as their giant birthday donut, Donutopolis is your one stop shop for all your donut needs. A personal favorite of mine is their maple bacon bar which I can comfortably say is the single best maple bacon donut I have ever had, and they are consistent. In fact once when I went in to get one before work they were sold out, and when I asked if they had any the baker offered to make me one right then and there. For no extra cost he didn't just sprinkle bacon bits on a plain maple bar and call it a day, he used fresh maple icing to glue the bits onto the bar, a bit of extra effort that I truly appreciated as I had to eat it on the go. It's the little things like that which show me that the people running this store and making these donuts aren't just doing the bare minimum, they care about their craft and they are dedicated to bringing you fresh and delicious donuts every time you visit, never cutting corners and never disappointing.
