I went here with a group of friends on Sunday for brunch. The parking is street parking either on state street or in the neighborhood right by it. There is a parking lot right by it but it's for another business and they will tow, so be sure to read the signs where you park. The vibe here is giving dive bar for sure. They have pool and darts. They also had a stage so I figure they have music or mic night. They have a covered patio downstairs as well as an upstairs one that gets sun. They have a lot of umbrellas so you aren't sitting directly in the sun but can still enjoy the nice weather. It also has lots of mirrors which give it a cool vibe and make it a good spot for pics. As for the food and service, it was a little all over the place. Our server seemed pretty flustered the whole time. I ordered a Diet Coke and the upstairs machine wasn't working. The first one that was brought out was incredibly flat. The second one was from the machine downstairs, and it wasn't great but it was drinkable. My friends got coffee and said it was good. They have $2 mimosas. They are definitely a smaller size but good for the price!! The food took a long time to come out and there were a few things missing. We also had a couple mimosas we ordered that were initially forgotten but brought after the second or third ask. The food itself was just meh. It's dive bar food. The potatoes were amazing though!! We came on a Sunday morning and it was not busy at all! We had a decent time and the food for the most part was good. They've got $2 mimosas so can't really complain about that! The most delicious vegan food in Salt Lake City isn't at a health store, a vegan restaurant, or a food truck. It's at an Irish pub. Piper Down Public House, located in the Ballpark Neighborhood, has been serving traditional Irish dishes since 2003 and boasts a dedicated vegan menu with items like bangers and mash, corned beef sandwiches, and fish and chips. The brunch menu especially shines with offerings like the Big Veggie Gilbert--a toasted brioche sandwich with vegan bacon, JustEgg, cheese, tomato, and chipotle aioli--and Huevos Rancheros. We just went for dinner, and everything is different. Not in a good way. I got fish and chips, and nothing was the same. The fish was chewy, and the breading tasted frozen. The food is good, but the service is top notch! Lots of choices to eat and drink- most with an Irish flair. If you go for St Patrick's Day, it's one of the most popular places in Salt Lake City. Stopped by for Sunday brunch and chose a table in the back room for our group of 5. We had a nice waitress who was attentive and patient with our group. My husband and I opted to share the Gilbert breakfast sandwich and the breakfast burrito: - The Gilbert was suppose to come on a brioche bun but mine didn't quite look or taste like one (someone else in our party also ordered the Gilbert and their bun was different). I'd say the sandwich would be great if there wasn't as much sauce smothered in it. Also, the hash brown Pattie's weren't crispy. - My husband enjoyed the breakfast burrito but there wasn't anything too special about it. We did like that it was served in a spinach tortilla. Piper Down always slaps, the food is just great for the price and excellent for a pub. Service is always decent and friendly even if they are crazy busy, and it's a great environment to hang out or watch games (I really enjoyed watching the World Cup here!) Came by today for brunch, drinks were out fast, food came out pretty quickly. They always cook my eggs perfectly (over easy), toast with that extra butter, and the potatoes are always delicious. Chicken fried steak was over done, but smother it with gravy, and it's all good. Girlfriend got the Mess of Potatoes which she really enjoyed, a healthier version of a garbage hash if you will. Went for brunch on Sunday. You have to find parking on the street, so prepare for that. The parking lot was only for the Vietnamese restaurant next door. If you like savory the corned beef hash is the way to go. I do enjoy hot sauce, so added it to complement the dish. The corned beef was tender and lean. Great option for an Irish dish in my opinion. However, this savory gal was thoroughly impressed by the French toast. My partner got the French toast and it was AMAZING. In fact, I would go back just to get the French toast because it was just the right amount of sweetness. That means something to this "savory gal" who's been craving their French toast. Honestly, I had a great time with my friends at this bar, but I'm really not a fan of live music when I drink. It just makes it so hard to have conversations. The world is on a budget, and Piper Down has charged my card 4 times Friday night and again Saturday when I wasn't even there! Beware of shady waitresses that use fake names. Anytime I can find a vegan pub, or pub with solid vegan options, I get super excited. Outside of England or Europe, this is a very uncommon encounter. So when I learned about Piper Down in SLC it was one of the first places I checked out. Piper Down is an Irish pub with an extremely excellent selection of vegan food. In fact, they have a whole separate menu (plus a vegan brunch menu on Saturdays/Sundays.) While I was very tempted to go there for dinner (and try out some bangers and mash), the brunch menu was too tempting too resist. The Irish breakfast was what really sealed the deal. Everything on that plate was incredible, from the just egg to the beyond brat to the bacon, etc. However, my partner and friend got the breakfast tacos and huevos rancheros and they too looked excellent as well. And to make things even better, their beer menu is pretty stellar as well. During my stay in SLC, I was trying to have as much Utah beer as possible. They had plenty of options, and the one I chose (a pale from TF brewing) was exactly my kind of beer (and a great rendition of the NE-style.) To top it all off, the space is generously-sized (including an outdoor space) and the staff/server were super friendly. Came here for drinks after work based on a friend's recommendation. Pretty quiet, but it was early on a Thursday evening. When we showed up they had just started to play bingo, and it sounded like some bar credit was being used as prizes. Super fun! I didn't actually get to participate, but I'll have to come on a Thursday in the near future to do so. I got an old fashioned and their autumn mule, both tasted great and were decently priced. Okay, this bar is FUN. We went for Bingo Night, which is Thursdays at 8, though all of their marketing material says 9 and when I called to ask, they told me it was at 8:30. The MC was a hilarious woman who kept the whole bar lively and engaged for over an hour. Highly recommend attending this event. We had many winners at our table, including me! I won two shots of tequila. I am the worst at shots, and our server noticed I had not taken them yet and offered to bring me two shots of juice and grenadine to help me get it down, for FREE. He did not need to do this, but he did. His consideration was greatly appreciated. The service overall was great. Given that the bar was full, I expected service to be slow, but our server was so nice and very speedy. He got every order correct. The food! My partner loved his vegan brat sandwich, but my Vegan Cowboy burger was not impressive. The bread overpowered it, and the tomato had zero flavor and a gross tough texture. It's a dive bar, so, you know, don't expect the highest quality of ingredients. The onion rings were great though. They also make their own ranch and THAT is delicious. The margarita was pretty sad. I can honestly say that I'm a bit of a regular when it comes to Piper Down. They're very close to our house so we find ourselves coming here quite often. Before the pandemic, we came every Thursday for Bingo, not sure if they've started it back up again but it was really fun when we used to go all the time! We love the grandiose menu and drink options, and the friendly and professional staff. They have extensive vegan options which is great for me because I'm lactose intolerant. For brunch, they do $1.50 mimosas. They are small so if you are with a group, I recommend buying the full bottle of champagne. It's just a great spot to get good food and relatively affordable drinks. They've also managed to keep a lot of their pre-pandemic staff which says to me that they treat their employees well and that the service you get is from experienced staff. Our favorite thing on the menu has to be the scotch eggs (sorry no vegan option here!). It's simple but it's satisfying and delicious with a beer. Now with that said, you might be wondering why the 3 star rating? Well, I went to the St. Patrick's Day special event over the weekend for the first time and wow it's like night and day. Almost all the things I love about Piper Down completely go away during St. Patrick's Day. It's no longer a relatively affordable place for a good night out, suddenly they are nickel and diming you at every corner until they've completely sucked you dry! First there's a $10 cover, which is fine. It's for the bands they say which my husband is a musician so I completely understand that performing live music is a wonderful feature worth paying extra for however, there wasn't an obvious sound engineer working that night. The bands were basically setting up their own sound levels and at one point a single band took over an hour to set up their gear. I hate to be nit picky but I paid $10 for live music. I expect to hear some live music! When they finally played, nobody even bothered to turn down the background music playing from the bar and at certain points you could still hear it over the band's playing. Also, one of the bands was extremely aggressive in asking for tips, which seems excessive given that they charge at the door and specify that the money collected goes to the bands. And don't even get me started on the menu. I imagine in an attempt to streamline service for what is for them the busiest time of the year, they severely cut down the menu from their multitude of options to a handful of (mostly deep fried) options. Worst of all, scotch eggs, along with a bunch of their Gaelic themed favorites, don't make the cut. One item on the menu is called "Irish Fries" for $7 but in actuality, it's literally just a basket of fries. At least they manage to keep a few vegan options around though! The same goes for beer. They go from having like 20 beers on tap to literally 2, Guinness or Regimental Red. Now I don't have prices memorized or anything but it seems like everything has a $3 - $4 surcharge to it. They do have this really cool machine that laser etches any photo or phrase to the top of your Guinness and our smart bartender showed it to us making us all want one! He said they were only $3 extra but I heard from a friend that they were actually $11 extra. Honestly who knows how much they actually are. Their menu options and pricing seem to go completely out the window for St. Paddy's Day! In the end, I'm happy to have finally checked out the famed Piper Down St. Patrick's Day celebration. After 5 years living in Salt Lake and going to Piper Down pretty regularly, I can honestly say I'm happy to have finally checked it out. On the other hand, I can also honestly say that I have zero interest in checking it out again. For our group of 7, when we combined our tabs, we spent close to $1,000! Think about the epic St Patrick's Day party you can throw at your home for that kind of money. I'll be back for brunch and bingo though! read more
