Pretty cool place with a lot of seating. They have a bar counter made completely into a long fish aquarium! Service was friendly though very slow for a Saturday afternoon. They were completely out of lobster and oysters unfortunately. We did opt for the seafood nachos (which were pretty good with the fried pita corners) and the mozzarella cheeseburger with mozzarella cheese sticks AND then even more mozzarella! For some average all- American bar/diner food, this is pretty good.

We stopped in here for the first time. We wanted to check it out. I didn't realize it was a sports bar and it was crowded and very noisy with all of the TVs showing a game. We both chose the seafood combo of fried shrimp and scallops. My wife Kathey chose the red potatoes and a salad for her sides while I went with the fries and some coleslaw. The food was ok as was the service considering how busy it was. Not sure if we will return but for sure it won't be on a Sunday game day.

I come here often. I mostly get their alligator bites and beer. But I have had their steak and raw oysters. I don't ever have a problem with service here. The ladies are attractive and nice. The place always smells clean. The only complaint is the extreme prices of their steaks. I will continue coming here though!

I loved the dress up (both staff and decorations) for the season. Our waitress was attentive and cordial. Our food was kinda meh. The best dish was the seafood nachos. The crab and seafood chowder was kinda bland but passable. Crab cake sandwich was fun with the legs sticking out making for an authentic experience, but the rest of it was just a leaf of lettuce, a sliced tomato, and white bread thrown in a toaster. Cajun linguine was terrible. Not Cajun at all, just a garlic sauce and a little black pepper. Way overpriced ($24). Seafood Nachos - 4 / 5 Chowder - 3.5 / 5 Crab Cake Sandwich - 3.25 / 5 "Cajun" Linguine with shrimp - 1.75 / 5 Decorations and service - 4 / 5 Tap Selection - 3.75 / 5 Overall - 3.25 / 5

The hubs and I came for a drink and a couple of appetizers. The drinks were great.we had the fried green beans which were fresh and not greasy. The clam chowder we ordered tasted okay but the texture was a bit mushy ( like the potatoes broke down inside the chowder due to overcooking) . Finally, we ordered the crab cakes and while they did have a pleasant taste, they were incredibly overcooked. The corn that was served as a side was also delicious but a bit overcooked. We will be back and try some more of their food. *end note The bar, which doubles as a fishtank is fun and the crabby salt shakers are a fun addition.

My daughter wanted to come here. She lives in New Bern and has yet to come. We went in and she wanted to sot at the bar. The bar is so cool, its a huge fish-tank. I tried a few of their local beers who's names i forget but they were house beers and very good. For dinner, we started with the alligator bites which were fried perfectly amd served with a nice dipping sauce. We then split the Whydah Galley steampot which was oysters, shrimp, clams, mussels, snow crab and king crab for $60 plus they charge you $5 to share a plate. Everything was outstanding Except, the shrimp weren't clean there are so many that you are cleaning shrimp poop for some time. Other than that, this was a great time

Wanted to try a different restaurant but for the second time they were packed at 515 so I went down.the street to here. Again the service was pleasant and the martini was good. The oysters (were blah but one was off. I had high hopes for the red snapper plain but hopefully cooked well but it was like eating chalk. Mac and cheese was good kinda like Panera the collards were ok too. Two things 1) the app and dinner came at the same time 2) something probably an oyster made me run to my hotel to use the loo.

There were a few restaurants but MJ's stood out amongst the rest for the photos and reviews. MJ's is located in downtown New Bern. The restaurant is not very big but the wait (20-25 mins) was worth it. We ordered the Admirals Platter which had oysters, clams, shrimp, and crab legs. The oysters were steamed to perfection, the clams were not dried out, the shrimp was perfectly seasoned with Old Bay and red onions and the crab legs were not dried out. What I am trying to say is, the seafood was fresh and not pre-cooked. It was cook to order. Our waiter was awesome. Even though the restaurant was packed full, he paid attention to our needs. Our glasses never got empty. He kept our table cleared by replacing the shell bucket without asking. We really appreciate the customer service. After dinner, we decided on dessert and had the lemon blueberry pie. I highly recommend it ... deliciousness!!! Thank you MJ's for a special time with delicious food. If we are back in New Bern, you will be a definite choice for seafood.

I decided to add the premium side Crab Tots ($1.99 when added to the meal). I'd never had them before and will definitely order them again! All of my meal items were served fresh and hot!! Everyone in our group cleaned their plates, so you know the quality and quantity of the food was outstanding! On my way out, I spotted the owner Trey sitting at a booth enjoying his lunch. I have to say, this "chowder" was the worst I've ever had and it's not even close. It tasted, and looked, straight out of a Campbell's soup can. It had hardly no clams and maybe two tiny potato bits. The base tasted just like cream of chicken soup and it was the same consistancy. I even checked with the girl at the front counter to make sure I got the right soup because it was not even close to being a chowder. Even though I didn't like the soup, no one offered to reimburse me for it. All of the other food was ok with the fried shrimp being the best. The whiting and okra both tasted a little like they were fried in old grease.

We were in no rush and our waiter (Beckett) was very accommodating with our pace. we ordered drinks and settled in on reviewing the small menu. Drinks were fine but I thought my beer (Sexy Cool Hazy IPA) was a little flat. We asked if there were any appetizers that would lend themselves to sharing. The only two, deviled eggs and pimento cheese, were not anything we were interested in so we passed. Surprisingly, there was not even a salad option as a starter. Two of the dinners had the NC catch of the day, golden tilefish. It was nice but a very small portion. One had the shrimp and clam purloo. It was a generous portion and was reported to be good. I had the braised pork cheeks. They tasted good and were not fatty at all. Looking back on our dinner, the food was fine but nothing exceptional. Also nothing "fresh" on the menu; salad, fresh vegetables, nothing. Also the lack of something other than the very pedestrian offers to share is something to consider. For what we paid, I would expect much better. PS - Our waiter, Beckett, was very good. Attentive enough but not too much. Also, why do restaurants of this caliber charge more for a credit card. Who is going to pay cash for a $300 meal? Just crank it into the price of the food and stop rubbing our noses in your cost to do business.

Our server Ridley, came to the table promptly, answered our questions and took our orders. Our drinks came quickly and were always full. The food arrived soon after our orders were placed. The presentation of our meals was terrific. Three diners in our party ordered the Fish Tacos and one got the Fish and Chips. It would be an understatement to say the servings were seriously generous. The fish & chips came 3 large fried fish filets and a heaping of seasoned fries. The taco orders each had 3 full vs mini sized soft tacos overflowing with fish filets...the fish was legit spilling out over both ends of the tacos! The fish was lightly battered, nicely seasoned and fried to perfection. The quantity of the food was so generous, only one of us could finish our meal!! On our way out, we stopped and spoke with the manager Kelsey. She is the spirit behind the "the new and improved" Persimmon's ethos. I'm so disappointed with Persimmons on the Waterfront, in New Bern…read more First, the good things: I love that they sell local art in the waiting area, secondly, I love sitting out on the deck. There was a nice breeze off the Neuse, even though it's 86° right now you don't know that because they have these nice shades and there's a nice breeze coming off the water. So what I didn't like first: I feel the menu was really limited, I can get around that, but the red flag right off the bat was their fish tacos and their fish and chips are made with "white fish" I figured they it was gonna be tilapia or something equally horrible. When I asked the what fish it was he said it was Pangasius, which the waiter described as similar to flounder and I also overheard another waiter. Say the same thing to somebody sitting near me so that's the spiel they're told to tell people who ask what kind of fish. I suggest that you look it up. It's Farm raised and not in very clean environment usually... I never eat tilapia and this is actually one rung below tilapia. I wasn't going to get fish. I ended up getting a burger which I normally don't get at a restaurant, but I ordered my burger, medium rare and the waiter said, "We don't do that. We either do pink or not pink." They tried to tell me it was a health department regulation. Nope! Other than fast food like McDonald's and Wendy's and such I've never been to a restaurant especially a supposedly fine dining restaurant where you couldn't order your burger, medium, well medium, medium-rare or rare. I said, try to make it less than just pink please. Then when I cut into my burger. It was well done. Maybe the exact center was slightly pink, but that was just one bite worth. I'm very disappointed, but I have to tell you I would be back just to be able to have the same glass of wine. It was a white wine, a dry white wine from Spain and the appetizer of brussels sprouts while sitting out on the patio, it was a nice experience for that but not for a meal.
