My first time in Manhattan beach eating Sushi but I can anticipate and say it is the best place. The food is so fresh and the cook really care about its plate. For around $8 a roll you get twice food and quality for your money. With my bf, we got spicy crunchy tuna, spicy California roll (the wonderful sweet lady serving us suggesting we had shrimp, it added some moist, she was right!!), eel roll (the eel was still warm as it has just been cooked). Walked in with my husband on Father's Day picked up a menu and was immediately told that our food will take 2 hours maybe more. Was walking around the area during the Manhattan Beach Summer Stroll thingy and was feeling a bit peckish. I saw the "sushi" sign and the yelp sticker on the window so I thought I'd give it a try. When I walked in, though, I had second thoughts. Had I wandered into a weird convenience store? There was hardly anything to indicate that it was a restaurant, let alone a sushi place. The deli case held weird glass knick knacks and the adjoining counter had some half-empty boxes of Japanese candy. There was a little counter against the window with a couple of stools and there was a tiny table outside with a couple of chairs but that was it. Everything looked a little dusty, and it was quite warm in the place. I looked askance at the Japanese woman behind the counter and she pointed me to the menus in a holder by the front door. This was the weirdest restaurant I've seen, period, but the prices looked reasonable and now I was curious about how good their sushi would be. I placed my order: yellowtail and eel sushi, and a spicy scallop roll. I got a can of green tea from the fridge and pulled out my wallet to pay but she said that I pay after. So I have a seat at the counter and start to read some of the Yelp reviews for this place. Wow, lots of high praise, could this indeed be that magical hole-in-the-wall joint that only locals know about? Well, overall my sushi was very good indeed, the fish pieces generous and fresh, atop slightly warm sushi rice. The spicy scallop roll had some decent kick, which is kind of unusual for a traditional Japanese place. Everything came to under $21, which is a decent deal for the quality of food I got, but man, the ambiance, or lack thereof. Could I truly consider myself a fan? I'd say my review's more like 3.5 stars but I'm rounding up because I like the idea of a place like this and the lady serving me was so nice. Definitely good for a quick bite on the run or to go, but not for a lingering and relaxing meal with a bunch of friends. It's about as no-frills as you can get, so be warned. read more

Biked to Manhattan Beach and felt like sushi. There aren't very many places off the strand, but we managed to find this place. - It's very small. 4 bar stools inside, 2 seats outside. - Run by (I assume) husband & wife team. No other staff. - Clearly used to be an ice cream shop. Decor isn't much. We ordered chirashi, sashimi plate and spicy scallop roll. Everything was really delicious! I was surprised actually. The pieces of fish in the chirashi and sashimi plate were HUGE - bigger than I've ever seen in similar dishes at other restaurants. The only downside to this place is the size and the wait. Since the husband is in the kitchen, the wife is the server, cashier, hostess all in one. She looked quite frantic trying to juggle all the to-go orders plus our dine-in order. I think we ended up waiting about 45 minutes to get our food and she gave us little gummy packets as a "sorry for the wait." If they had one more employee to help out, things would go much smoother. I felt like one of those characters in "Diner Dash" who's waiting too long and the smoke comes out of their ears hahaha! Cute little sushi spot on a busy street. Found this via Yelp, of course, and we're glad we gave it a try! When we first walked in, I was like, "where do we sit?!" but it actually worked out because it was such a nice day and the table outside was perfect (minus the little lean... lol). Our server was also enthusiastic and nice. Good place for take-out for sure. If you're looking for good, simple sushi, give this spot a try. The bf and I tried the: 1. Rainbow roll - standard, but good 2. Spicy scallop roll - yummy... would order this again.. sauce drizzled on top was very good 3. Spicy tuna crunch roll - good flavor and love the crunchy flakes 4. Tempura roll - another yummy choice.. and also had yummy sauce drizzled on top As for cons... the only things I can think of is the space factor (hardly any seating) and of course the parking situation (at least the meters take cards). Pisces is the perfect example of a hidden gem. When you drive by it, you barely even notice it exists (which can be a good and bad thing). It's small and barely seats 5 people, but don't let that fool you. This place has such great sushi and service. I believe it's mainly a take out sushi spot and I know some people are thinking "takeout sushi?! Ew!" But I would recommend getting it to go and eating it at a local park close by so it stays as fresh as possible. Came here at around 8pm on a Sunday night when they closed at 9. Ok so here comes the downside of this place...it's ran by a husband and wife and the husband is the only sushi chef which means it's takes a little while to get your order out. We got in at 8pm and didn't get our food for a really long time because of other orders before us, both takeout and eat in from another party. When we finally got our food it was near closing time but the wife insisted we stay as long as we'd like and order whatever else even though they were technically closed! Very sweet and accomadating compared to a chain restaurant that would have closed the kitchen at 8:30pm sharp. We ordered: Spicy California Crunchy (2 total) Shrimp Tempura Crunchy Unagi Sushi (Freshwater Eel) Albacore Sushi Everything we ordered was delicious and so carefully prepared. WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW... WOW!! Yea, it's THAT good. This place is really deceiving. It looks nothing like a restaurant. This place was an experience! You walk in to what looks like an Asian glassware store? There's nothing that really resembles a sit down restaurant, but that is the absolutely beauty in this establishment. The locals know all too well that this is one of the best sushi places in all of the South Bay. It's a hidden gem. As soon as you come in you are greeted by the nicest Asian woman who is completely 100% dedicated to making your experience the very best. She will hand you menus and in our case, we picked two similar rolls, instead she suggested we try the Shrimp Tempura CRUNCHY Roll! Wow, we are so glad we did, it was out of this world and I have been to so many sushi places. There is a window inside with drapes where the chef prepares your order. We ordered two rolls and asked for cold water to drink. There are only 4 seats inside so it is VERY intimate. Two seats looking out toward the street and two that face the window where the chef is preparing the food. There is also a table outside that has two chairs, but if you come with more people the lady will come out with folding chairs (I watched this happen) and make sure you have enough for everyone. This place is a tiny cafe like a Hokkaido style sushi bar with a slender table rather than a ring-shape table surrounded by customers. I've tried many items here but my go-to order always includes one or more of the following: spicy tuna crunchy roll, shrimp tempura crunchy roll, spicy scallop roll, and salmon roll. They're all fantastic! Be warned though, this is a tiny mom and pop shop with only the husband and wife working, which means your order will take awhile especially if its during peak hours. When ordering for dinner I always call ahead and anticipate a 45-60 minute wait. One Thursday night I called and they couldn't even take my order because it was a 2-hour wait time! This tiny little seaside sushi shop (say that 5 times) serves up some decent rolls with a good amount of fish inside. Pretty delicious and fresh for standard rolls. Hit or miss with the service, wait time, communication and if hey run out of rice or not. If you order, they run out of rice, you go pick up, they tell you no more rice which then means no more maki or nigiri. So no dinner. Other times the food is well perfectly. Be prepared!! I discovered this little gem when I was in El Segundo for work.. Believe the hype y'all..on all counts! This place is SO tiny I would suggest calling in your order and taking it to-go. Store hours can be a little inconsistent...I experienced this during the few days I was in town...I wanted to get sushi one more time before heading back to SD..yelp said they were open..I kept calling to try to phone in my order but no one picked up..I thought maybe they were busy and decided to drive there...but nope...they were closed! That can happen with a mom and pop shop..this business is run by a lovely couple...I can't hold it against them! On to the sushi...I got sake and unagi nigiri. I could really taste the quality/freshness of the fish. I also got the Spicy Tuna Crunch Roll! This was the main reason for me wanting sushi so soon after my first visit... Perfection! The spicy tuna had a great kick...the crunchies on top added just the right amount of texture to the raw fish without being too heavy...and the two sauces on top added great flavor without overpowering the fish! read more

My first bit of advice is, if when you order, Sara asks you, "You want to make your roll crunchy?" You say, Yes! I recently moved very close to Pisces Sushi and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite places in the south bay. Being Japanese American, I'm partial to only going to Japanese-owned Japanese restaurants, which this one is (FYI). My co-workers and I ordered ahead and ate at the beach. It's very important to call ahead if you're going for lunch. This might be "take-out" sushi, but it's not the kind that sits in a fridge. It literally means they make it for you, and you take it out, because there's not much room to sit down! That's how fresh it is. Point is, you can't run in and grab it off a shelf and go, so be prepared. Anyway, when I opened my package of Spicy Tuna California Roll Crunchy Style, I took my first bite, and was dancing on the beach. It was SOOOO good! And not to mention, it was a very large roll (as well as being very reasonably priced). When I finished it, I could not bear to take even one bite of my inari. My co-workers ordered mixed chirashi, shrimp crunchy roll, and california roll, all of which were amazing as well. I've previously ordered the salmon chirashi which was absolutely fantastic. Sara asked if I wanted scallions and I said yes and was glad I did. I could tell the small lunch was made with a lot of care. I would highly recommend everyone in the south bay to stop by Pisces for some sushi that's made with love. Stop by on a weekend and take it with you to the beach (which is a few hundred feet away). Definitely a tiny hole in the wall, so don't expect speedy service, but you CAN expect fresh, delicious sushi and appetizers, wonderful service and an amazing mom n pop spot! There are only 6 seats (2 outside & 4 inside), so ordering take-out is always a bit easier, especially because parking can be a bit tricky. Appetizers: Both the miso and ramen are legit!! I usually try to make sure that we get one of each because I can't decide which I love most. The seaweed salad is delicious -- no skimping on seaweed and always a generous portion. The tempura everything is always a heavy hitter too. Can't really go wrong with tempura shrimp served right out of the frier! The fried potstickers... DAMN. So SO good. Huge portion though, so there usually are some leftovers for lunch the next day. The sashimi, sushi and hand rolls are always on point! Every roll that we've tried has been incredibly good, but my go-to favorite is the salmon hand roll. Perfection!! Seriously. So good. Our family discovered this place back in early 2006 and became regulars for the next 8 years. Sara & Yoshi are the cutest married couple and they aren't pretentious and keep it simple. Always fantastic service. I have to apologize for anyone that was in line in front of us and thought they were cut off because our order was brought out to us first. Haha! Parking is terrible around here (only 3 metered spots up front), otherwise you are parking further away and walking. There's only 4? stools inside, so we always call ahead to take-out. They have a fridge inside where you can buy a few items (soda or mochi). So why 5 stars? Their limited sushi menu can make the pseudo sushi fan (California roll type) or sushi snob happy. We have tried everything on the menu and there have been no complaints. In fact, we have placed large orders for parties through them. Things our family has loved: Spicy Tuna Crunchy (this item was in the highest demand in our house) Miso Soup (there's is a stand out) Yellowtail Gyoza Tempura Salad (I like their sesame dressing) The only complaint you will have is that there are only 2 of them so they can get backed up. I like this place. I came on a random Wednesday at noon and was able to sit at the counter and eat a crunchy spicy tuna roll since I was by myself. The I think the lady that took my order and the man that made my roll are married... to each other. Cute, right? The roll itself was pretty filling and very tasty.
