I'm a longtime fan of Julian's so I was hype to see they had a sister restaurant. It did not disappoint, I'm still bowled over by how good of an experience it was! The ambiance was excellent, it was giving 80s arcade vibes. The projector showing monsters inc was a nice touch. We were seated quickly and the service was friendly and fast. They let us sample 3 different beers before deciding which pitcher to go with. My only complaint is the draft beer menu was very interesting and eclectic - honestly I would liked a basic light beer but that's just my preference. Pizza J has consistently been our go to pizza place before the pandemic and definitely during the pandemic for take out. While I missed the cool vibe of eating inside, I appreciate the simplicity of take out. You can easily order on their website and pick up. They have great seitan wings with vegan blue cheese, vegan sausage, and vegan cheese options for plant based eaters. We love to build our own pizza. The portions are large and the pies are tasty. I find my self returning here more often than I expected. The pizza is both delicious & offers some fun combinations of toppings. It's a little on the pricy end but still worth it. The service is good & helpful but can be a little slow depending on how busy it is. The beer choices offer a good mix of local breweries that are worth trying. We ordered the rita and a pepperoni. Both were excellent. I assume the Rita is their take on a Margherita pizza, served with a tomato sauce instead of fresh tomatoes, but I'm sure there are hundreds of variations... and I will note that getting a good fresh tomato that tastes like a tomato is pretty much impossible. Finally made it to Pizza J last week and am so glad that I did! We found ourselves on the West Side of Providence on Labor Day Monday and we were craving pizza so it was time to give Pizza J a whirl. They have seating inside and outside. We wanted to sit outside and it was pretty busy so we had to wait about 20 minutes. We walked around the neighborhood a bit, came back, and boom our table was ready! There was one server waiting on all the tables outside and he was wonderful. He cleared are table right away, had plenty of suggestions for how we could make the pizza our own, and made us feel truly welcomed. Pizza J can split any pizza half and half! We did half cheese and half the Tony Clifton with vegetarian sausage on it. We also split the roasted broccolini to start. The pizza was fresh, bubbling hot, and had that crispy crunchy crust that I love so much. If you find yourself on the West Side of PVD don't sleep on Pizza J! read more

Had to go back and update after Pizza J quickly rose to the top of our "go to" restaurants for dinner in Providence! I just finished out performing in a musical that played down the street from this fantastic eatery, and we basically went here for dinner every night after my performances! Of course, that allowed me to sample a few more menu items, and I felt like the Garlic Fries deserved a review update all of their own! You MUST order these decadent and delightful morsels of garlicky goodness! Hand cut fries topped with garlic aioli, Parmesan cheese, and herbs, all served in a heaping portion that's perfect for sharing - or not! Pro tip: don't plan on kissing anyone after you have these, unless they ate the fries too! The garlic flavor packs a punch! However, they are AMAZING, and one of the best starters I've had at all the casual dining restaurants in PVD. Definitely worth checking out. Extra special shoutout to our server, Martha, who we had tending our table on more than one occasion. She is hysterically funny, attentive, and awesome, and if you can request her as your server when you go, DO IT! We got the Garlic Fries at her excellent recommendation! I've gone here a few times; the pizza is delicious and is a favorite among my office. My only qualm is I made an order for an office party a day in advance and when I went to pick it up at the requested time it was not ready. I was happy to be patient when they said it would only take 15 more minutes but it ended up taking 30 minutes and one of the pizzas was not cut. Decided to try Pizza J because they had a nice beer menu and pizza always works for the kids. Went on a Friday night at 6 expecting it to be packed and to our pleasant surprise, it wasn't!! Basically sat ourselves after being greeted and server came over right away to point out the QR code menu, which I guess is still new to some folks. We were able to get small flights of beers even though they were out of the 4 oz flight glasses (substituted 6 oz pours at no added cost). Server was clearly experienced and was very attentive even though he had about 10 tables. Had the fried chicken sando and it was outstanding! Instead of one giant piece of chicken it had a pair of thin breasts that were perfectly fried (it would have been easy to overcook them). Slaw and ranch complimented the crispy fried goodness. Wife and kids split a roni pie and it was also cooked perfectly. Not greasy and held together well for a thin crust. We even ended up taking a pastry stout home to have by the fire later on. My favorite of all time is the Arcimboldo pizza, red sauce/cheese/olives/artichokes/herbs. Just the fricken best. This was my last stop on Lord of the Pies. I missed this stop for Lord of the Wings so I was excited to come in and finally. The consensus between my partner and I is that Pizza J is a lot of fun, and that we were actually very surprised by the interior. I'm not sure what we expected; from the outside, it appears to only be a pizza counter, but once you step in it's a full blown bar and restaurant with arcade games, projector screens and TV's. Plenty of tables, but confusing that the booth side of the table had no seat cushions. Obviously not a deterrent, but something that we weren't expecting for sure. Took longer for drink service, but it was a busy night & is totally excusable. Same for food --- as long as it comes out hot, we're happy. We ordered the Butternut Squash Soup special, garlic fries, and 1 slice each of cheese and pepperoni. The staff accidentally burnt my partner's slice, but they informed us of the issue and quickly resolved it. The pizza, although a "slice," could have comfortably been two slices. It's a generous portion. The crust was impressive, perhaps the most impressive part of the pizza. Nice and soft, but still firm enough to hold the toppings. Although we were there for pizza, the Butternut Squash soup was the best bite of the night. With hints of tanginess and savoriness, the soup was very pleasant, and just what we needed on a cold night. The menu didn't specify that the garlic fries had a garlic aioli directly drizzled over the fries. I'm not a fan of aioli (my partner is), so that took away from the enjoyment of the fries. To be fair, I should have asked if it came on the side as a dip. I'd definitely come back for pizza again. Hopefully they'll still have the Squash soup! read more

Service was quick and we were seated right away. Our waitress was polite and pleasant. It felt like we waited a while for the pizza, but I didn't realize it was a wood-fired oven. Best pizza's are cooked this way, and it takes time. Well worth the wait, pizza was absolutely delicious. The fried mozzarella was very good, it was two fairly large pieces and good to share. I enjoyed the imperial coffee stout I had with the meal, my wife got a float (she loved it). Plenty of options for drinks, can't really go wrong. I would like to try a cocktail here in the future. My favorite part of this place? PINBALL!!! Some fairly modern, some classics, in great working order. I had not seen the Ghostbusters pinball machine before, seemed very good quality. My favorite was the Star Trek pinball machine, and this is based on the current JJ Abrams reboot (so yeah, fairly new) and I found that to have the most fun for game play. This place has a super hipster-ey vibe as evidenced by the collections of retro toys, old pinball machines, and 90's cult movies being played on the TVs around the restaurant. There's so much to look at and take in that we discover something new each time we visit. On the last page of the menu we stumbled across an amazing Sunday "family dinner" special - a cheese or pepperoni pizza, two appetizers, and a carafe of soda for $25 - that's a pretty great deal for this place! The bathrooms are beautiful and way nicer than the ones I have a home. What a surprise it was to find such a fancy place to pee! As laid back and nostalgic as this place is, they aren't flexible with making substitutions or accommodations to their menu. For example, one time I wanted to order something that's on their lunch menu but was told that I could only order what was on the dinner menu because it was after 5:00 and then tonight, when we ordered the family meal deal, I asked if we could have lemonade or something else non carbonated to drink (I don't give my kids soda) instead of the carafe of soda that comes with the meal and was told they could not make any substitutions. Not a deal breaker but still a major bummer. The service is professional but not personable. While no one is rude, they just aren't friendly. As a matter of fact, visiting Pizza J has become one of the things I've missed the most over quarantine; absorbing the terrific and unique atmosphere, sitting at the ample bar and enjoying the creative cocktail menu and having the best slice in town. They also have great sandwiches, flavorful salads and a rotating desert selection. Staff is always friendly, the owner is very nice also. The pinball In here is amazing! There's plenty of parking, whether it be in their lot or on the street. Seating is comfortable and I know they can accommodate larger groups. Let me say the people were fast and friendly, but the pizza was downright terrible. Charred and really lacking any semblance of taste. Cheese was a little too greasy and the sauce really wasn't anything special. As a side note, with the 'lord of the pies' deal, they are strict about it being 'dine in only'. The coupon does state it, but most places let you get it to go since its just a slice. Pizza was good but not what I was looking for. Went with The Rita which is cheese, red sauce and basil. Was more of what I call fancy pizza. Not as thin and crispy as I like. Not a typical NY style, but again still good but not great. Didn't care for it reheated as leftovers.
