    Half Dozen Mild Wings
    Jay Y.

Welcome to Part 2 Foodaholics of the Saturday food adventure. If you have not watched Part 1 from KJ's Pickle Barrel, please check it out. Now Part 2 takes us to Pizza L'Oven in the evening to where I ordered a half tray of Sicilian pizza and a half order of their wings. The last time I had this was a takeout during the pandemic. The wings were nice and crisp but not overdone, I have to say they were really good. The sauce is on the thinner side were usually in most places are a thicker sauce. However, in this case tonight it worked out really well. My half tray comes with or without onions, I went with and added bacon. The crust was crisp, nicely done. The pizza itself was very delicious. The sauce with the cheese, bacon, and onions just was a great combination. Now they are a cash only place with an ATM on site. A big thumbs up and recommend. Until next week, see you in the next video, catch us Saturday nights 9 pm EST for Outside the Box Live! One of the best pizza places in the area for decades. The wings are outstanding.... So good that we don't care to get wings at other establishments for the most part. This Pizza L'Oven location is a must visit restaurant in the Northeast PA area.

Full disclaimer, my wife grew up in this area and worked here as a teenager in the late 80's. I, however, never knew of this place or the wonders of "Old Forge" style pizza until much later in life. It is now a must stop every time we visit family. Although, I do like to switch up my "Old Forge" pizza joints we find ourselves coming here often. This is a family owned and operated establishment, and even though I visit about twice a year, I feel like I know the staff. Pizza L'Oven has a large menu but there should only be two reasons to visit --- pizza and wings. The pizza dough is fried in a cast iron skillet and then the cheese and sauce are baked on top in the oven. It's a square cut pizza with a breadlike crispy fried bottom and chewy center. The cheese varies from place to place but its typically a blend with lots of american. While not my go to -- they also make a delicious white pizza. The local tradition is to order your "cuts"--- "with" meaning I want onions (e.g. gimme 4 cuts / with). If you're really hungry you may order a "tray" not a pie. Pie is reserved for desert. A tray is 14 cuts usually offered at a reduced price. I typically order 3 or 4 cuts but always want more (oh gluttony). While I love their pizza, we typically visit here more than their competitors for their wings. The wings are medium to large in size, fresh - never frozen and fried crispy. Sauce options are mild, hot or hooter. The sauces all have good flavor and even though hooter is their hottest none are too spicy. I always order hot with a side of hooter for dipping. Hooter also tastes great with your crust! This place may put me in an early grave but atleast I'm enjoying the ride!

With that said this still should've been a five star experience if not for a couple tiny hiccups. First off, I started off drinking at their bar and bottle shop across the parking lot. In fact, I was going to get a pizza over there, except I wanted to be all healthy and get a salad as well, which was not offered on the limited, pizza and snacks only menu available at the bottle shop. I closed my tab and walked across the parking lot only find a very interesting set up of a to go area very much separated from a sit down only restaurant. Quickly figured out I need to be in the to go area, where I was able to get a draft beer while I waited for my pizza and salad to go. Luckily I asked for a min to settle my tab as I wanted a can to take with me, at which point I found out about the cash only aspect. Last part of slight disappointment resided in the fact that they let me sit there with an empty glass without telling me my pizza was ready, until I finally went to the counter and they asked if I was ready to go. Uh yeah I was actually. By the time I go back to the hotel 14 minutes away, the pizza had gotten cold and required reheating. Fortunately, it was good enough that even with the reheat, revealed itself to be one hell of a pizza. Subtract another fraction of a point for not putting any plastic silverware for my salad. By the way, salad was fine, but pizza slaps.

Now I also ordered their cauliflower crust pizza with the veggie toppings, they have an amazing cauliflower crust, but I have learned you have to eat it there, unlike the regular crust. As you can see this pie was packed full of those healthy vegetables. The crust was nice and thin, normally I am not a crust person, but I like how sab's does there's. Whether it's a plain or specialty pie sab's pizzas are simple and delicious. They are a cash only place with an ATM on sight. Definitely recommend if you have never been here before. Welcome to Januzzi's everyone, I have never done a food review here, I had their pizza back in the…read moreday, but it has been a very long time. Now for starters I am trying a cup of their broccoli and cheddar which really hit the spot, a basic and old school soup, very delicious. Now they have something called the bacon cheeseburger egg roll which comes with a side of I believe it was a type of onion aioli dipping sauce. These came out very hot and delicious without the sauce, the sauce pushed my taste buds over the limits, I never had this type of appetizer before, you can smell that sauce before you even taste it, you know it's well when that happens. Now for my pizza, I got a personal, mini pie loaded their supreme way. The taste brought me back to a time long ago, if the recipe changed at all you can't really tell. Now my server was really great too, knew the menu off the top of her head, very professional and welcoming. Januzzi's is your old school pizzeria, now they do make goodies to take home with you. Come and check them out, they are located in Exeter across from the police station. Until next video be blessed and stay safe everyone. Unlike some of the other well known pizza spots in Old Forge, they are open for lunch and also have an indoor dining area. I ordered in advance since pizzas take a while to cook, and was ready right on time when promised. The lady that answered the phone was really pleasant in taking my order and answering questions I had, and also made it a point to chat with us when we came in. I appreciated the genuinely friendly conversation and her checking in to ask how the pizza was after we tried it. The interior seating area is cozy, clean, and modern, with tasteful pictures of Italy's landmarks on the wall. We went with a tray of the red, which is the standard pizza with cheese and red tomato sauce. While it looks like a Sicilian slice, it's feel is airy and much lighter, with a great crunchy crust. While the sauce and cheese were decent enough, they didn't measure up to the quality I'm spoiled with in the New Jersey/Philadelphia areas. The crust was really the star of the show, and gave vibes of a unique taste akin to a French bread and/or Ellios pizza crust the way they used to make it decades ago. While it wouldn't be in my wheelhouse for a style of pizza I'd regularly get, we were satisfied with the taste of the pizza and the overall experience. Since I haven't tried any of the other Old Forge pizzas and have nothing to compare it to, I'll chalk the pizza up to a 4.5/5 for its own unique special style, and am happy to round up for the satisfying experience and friendly service. I'd recommend giving Mary Lou's Pizza a try to others looking to experience Old Forge pizza.
