Best pizza in Scranton. Been in business over 54 years. That says a lot about quality

On Fridays in high school in the 1980s we would go to Pappas for lunch. The pizza is still as awesome now as it was then. Unchanged! The grinders are also as great as always. Central High School is now part of Lacka. College, but Papa's is STILL making the same great pizza! I like to order mine well done/burnt to get nice browned cheese on the edges of the pizza. One pizza might be enough for 2 people. But get one pie each to be on the safe side. Left over pizza is never a bad thing. read more

Quick lunch after Dermatology appt. I ordered a personal size pan pizza with onions and mushroom, it was delicious. Perfect amount of sauce, topping, cheese. Being a New Yorker, this pizza passed the taste. read more

Super good food at great prices! They use green boxes for their pizza that can be used as plates and it's a great touch in my opinion! I get delivery at work often and they are always quick and their delivery drivers are very nice! Tonight at home I ordered delivery through Door Dash and it was still very quick (I live about 15 minutes away), the food arrived hot and every little detail in the special instructions was followed. You definitely have to come here if you're in downtown Scranton where most restaurants closed on Sunday. The décor at this place is still stuck in the last century with running model train above your head. We came here for Pepperoni Grinder which tasted amazing! Personal pie pizza wasn't bad either, a bit greasy. I heard Tuna Grinder is great as well. I guess I need to stop by again when I'm in Scranton next time. read more

My mom and I like to get the chicken and onion personal pizza. She's really picky when it comes to ordering food, but she loves their pizza & I'm excited to try other things on their menu. The staff are super helpful & friendly! The restaurant is clean and cozy with their hanging lights, nostalgic photographs of Scranton, and awesome tot train that travels throughout the whole place. Yum! First time here, was nearby for sightseeing and First Friday street fair. Good location near things to do and Scranton University. You walk in and the seating is mostly booths, walk to the back to order and pay, you get an order number, and you can sit where you want. They call your number a few minutes later and you pick up. There is a fun model railroad going around the wall on track inside the dining area. Open kitchen so you can see them working on orders. They have a big menu of grinders/subs too, but I wanted to try the pizza. The pizzas are all the same size - about 10 inches, enough for one hungry person or to share with a friend. The crust is crunchy on bottom and melty and soft with cheese and toppings on top. You can get one topping at a time adhoc, or pick a specialty - I got the veggie pizza - olives, peppers, tomato, onion. Delicious! Service was fast and helpful for newbie. Having grown up on this pizza, perhaps I'm a little biased. They do their own version of pizza (pan), ordered by the tray, not pie. Their grinders are not the usual local subs or hoagies. You cannot compare these to any other place around, so they are obviously the best at what they do. You'll see on their menu that their food is cited as the best. I agree. Try it for yourself and you'll see. Grab a tray, a grinder and maybe an appetizer (fries are really good) and enjoy a staple of downtown Scranton. read more

first thing they do at the register is ask if you're leaving a tip. crass. and it will affect the quality of your food and the time it takes to serve your food. the restaurant is cold. your hands and face will be cold. french fries dry. grinder smashed wrapped up tight even though you're eating in. thats what you get. read more

Okay never a thought to review DELIVERY!. Lunch time on a weekday. A day off with the first snow of 2021 found a quick and efficient delivery. Pizza is perfectly balanced of sauce dough and cheese. The custom pan pizza is the go to, a 10' pie for $9 dollars. The only decieving thing i will have to point out. The cheese and potatoes pieorgi app is very affordable but lacks authenticity. Their pizza is so unique - different than any other style but very good! I tried their chicken salad grinder it was overall dry and not very flavorful, I just wasn't a huge fan of their toasted rolls, maybe would try un-toasted or a different kind of sandwich next time. read more

Far from it being my first time there, I decided to go for the plain but reliably good American fare. I ordered my usual, eat in, then went to the register/payment terminal. Before sliding my card I was requested to answer a question, ARE YOU ADDING A TIP. How crass. I chose no. A tip comes after good food and service. You expect a tip for a poorly made grinder with 2 slices of thickly cut tomato, lettuce & onion sliced like hair, watery tuna salad. wrapped tightly and taped, even though I said I was eating in. It wasn't difficult to unwrap because it was wet enough to dissolve the heavy wrapping paper. The fries were bone dry, half of them hard pieces. Just tried this place for the first time, was really looking forward to trying it based on the pictures and great reviews! We decided to try the plain pizza and Philly style cheesesteak. Not sure if it was just the pizza we got, but it was burnt, the cheese was hard and it was cold, reminded us of old pizza that they just wanted to get rid of. It tasted like a box pizza that could have been purchased at the store. We were disappointed and would be willing to try again, but hesitant with our experience. Hands down the BEST pizza in NEPA. No one else's compares! It's clean, the staff are great, and the prices are reasonable. I have been eating here since their Clarks Summit location was open, probably 30 years ago, and I can honestly say their recipe has never changed- which is a great thing! Consistently good pizza and hoagies. The pizza is always crispy and delicious. It's not a big pizza and can feed one or two people depending on how hungry you are. It's even good at room temperature. I've been coming to Pizza by Pappas since oh 1980 or so when I was a student at Marywood College. I loved it then. I love it now. Crispy greasy crust which I love. Perfect sauce and cheese. I occasionally get it with pepperoni. Occasionally with veggie toppings. Husband always gets the plain. All are tremendous. We've taken out and eaten in. Always a great experience. Classic establishment. I love Pizza by Pappas. I have been coming here for years and fell in love with it since I first had it. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. On cold days, try the soup. It's delicious. The regular tray (or extra cheese) is a must-have, and as far as grinders go, I have literally never had a tuna grinder taste the way it is made here. There is something about it that captures an essence which has become far too rare today. You will not be disappointed. read more

It's all about the TUNA GRINDER. It used to be better, but about a year or so ago they must have changed the recipe, but it is still the best in the city. The pizza is unique and and great. I go here for lunch often.. The grinders are awesome (and huge, I always split one with a coworker). One of the most reasonably priced restaurants downtown. Seriously, try the chicken salad grinder. It has cranberries and pecans and it's the most delicious with melted cheese when it's fresh out of their awesome toaster oven. The tuna grinder is nothing to sneeze at either! If you are there early enough definitely get a cup of homemade soup, I'm in love with the Loaded Baked Potato but plenty of their soups are great, and most sell out quickly during the busy lunch hour. Lots of friends of mine crave this pizza. It's pretty greasy (but that makes it more delicious, right?). Only one size, which is a little bigger than a personal. Definitely worth a taste if you aren't in the mood for a grinder! No table service; you place your order at the counter and they give you a number that they call over a loudspeaker, so it's not the most intimate dining experience I've ever had. But... There's a cool train that runs on a track along the ceiling. All the kids seem to really love it. read more

the staff is very rude and disrespectful. when I went in to pick up a delivery they talked over me, wanted me to wait online even though the other person that was there for a delivery didn't have to, and they gave my order to the wrong person thank god he relized it wasn't his and gave it back. very incompetent people working there. read more

The bread they use for the grinders is awful. It's dry and stale every time. It has no chew or crust to it. Reminds of the bread you get at gas station in the cooler already made. I've only had their pizza over the years. I liked it when we were kids and hadn't yet explored much options of what pizza was really about. Now, I feel its highly over rated for its price/taste. Someone would have to really twist my arm to get pizza from here again. read more

Great takeout. Cheese steak is really good. I can easily eat an entire tiny tray of pizza myself. Love that whatever you order is ready in 10 minutes(most times). Recommended. read more

I think nostalgia is what keeps this place going. I'm a transplant here, so I don't have any fond memories of the place. To be fair, the 3 times that I've been there, I've only had the pizza. So I cannot comment on the other food. The pizza is small, 10" or 12", not sure. It's on the expensive side at $6.99 for such a small pie. I'm not sure if they consider it pan pizza or Sisilian, but their crust is greasy and always burnt, I'm guessing that is part of their "thing" though. The sauce is nothing to write home about, but it's not terrible and the cheese is just your average pizza cheese. We have many, way better, pizza joints in the area. read more

Although this is a sort of landmark pizza place and I have eaten there for over 30 years, I am so sad to say I contracted FOOD POISONING from a veggie grinder last week and almost had to go to the hospital after 3 days of intense gastrointestinal shall we say disruption. I know it was from the sub sandwich bc it was all I had eaten the previous day around 2pm, woke up at around 4am deathly ill, and never again. 3 days! Much better options, tho I will miss the bacon onion pizza, why are they using canned mushrooms and slimy peppers and canned veg still? And drab limp lettuce. Step up or close up.
