    Veggie sub
    Grace K.

Pizza palace is the place to be. I can't get over their nice crunchy yet soft crust. It's crazy good! They also have some great subs. I will say, I ordered a vegetarian sub and it only had cheese tomato and shredded lettuce--not sure if that was a mistake or that's how they do it, but it's quite odd. Pizza is awesome though.

I'm back again and again. Ordered 2 of these and one to go for a road trip back to Florida. Best ones in the city.

This place is amazing. They got pizza, pasta, and many other things I did not try yet. I recommend the spaghetti with sauce

    Small special

Our final day in Connecticut began with sleeping in. Ahhhhhh, I HEART vacations. And praise the Lord that my 8 month old also decided to sleep in. After snoozing the alarm for the 20th time, we finally got up and since we wanted to hit up the cider making demonstration at B.F. Clyde's by 1pm, a quick lunch was in order. Pizza Palace was a quick and delicious spot for lunch. Food - We ordered a small special ($8.75), which was a 10" pizza with pepperoni, sausage, meatball, onions, peppers, and mushrooms. The crust was thick and similar to Pizza Hut's pan pizza, only much less greasy. How they managed to get the crust so crispy on the outside without making it oily is a mystery to me. The small is large enough to feed 2 or 3, so if you need more food, the large special is $16.90. We also ordered a small Italian combo grinder ($5.95). We asked them to cut it into 4 pieces, and it was almost like having a sushi-sized sandwich (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/lHpGGbjFwTwXvyoTaQGKBw?select=IiGO0PN9cnOmxJN9kGI9ZQ). Mr. Owl may have taken 3 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop, but he'd only need a bite or two to get through these pieces. The sandwich itself wasn't anything out of the ordinary but would be a decent option for lunch. They also have Italian specialties, such as spaghetti, ravioli ($6.50), and calzones ($6.95), and seafood, such as fish and chips ($9.45), clam strips ($9.45), and fried scallops ($11.75). Location - the interior was spacious and would be good for groups. We went around lunch time on a Saturday and there were several other customers. Note: Pizza Grotto is right next door and every time we drove by, there wasn't a single car in the parking lot. You almost have to feel bad for it. It's kinda like they're the stinky kid who got caught picking his nose. I found myself strangely sympathetic towards PG, but judging by the lack of customers, make sure you go to Pizza Palace. Service - was incredibly friendly. They were kind enough to cut the small grinder into 4's. We had less than an hour for lunch, and the food came out quickly and we made the cider demo on time. Great spot for a quick pizza or sandwich in Groton.

Mozzarella sticks (comes with six, but I ate one...lol).

We both ordered spaghetti, one with a meatball, one with sausage. The pasta is flat as it would be if house made. However, having lived in Italy, eating many a 'house made' restaurant pasta, and, having made my own, to me this spaghetti does not have the taste or texture I expected from house made. My meatball did taste homemade. However, as is common in the restaurant industry, the texture leads me to believe a big batch is made and frozen for later use. It was tough to cut. A bit rubbery. The sauce was OK, Not delightful. Not bad. All together this was not a dish worth chewing for me personally and I left half of it behind. Seating is available both indoors and outside over looking the river. Parking is available behind the building or about a block away in a free public lot. One restroom for all. Prepared foods available 'to go' at a deli counter by the entrance. The entrance is a few steps up from the sidewalk.

The waiter did not do a good job of coming to our table to check in on us, drink orders, and refilling our waters. This time I tired some of the lamb chop which was cooked well and tasted amazing for an appetizer. For the main entree this time, I had a special which was a halibut with a linguini pasta. The fish was cooked pretty good and so was the pasta (al dente) however the sauce that it was served in was quite bland. Definitely a letdown with the sauce which made me not finish the pasta. If they nailed the sauce with something savory and complimentary to the fish, this would've kept the high praise review. Overall, this experience was unfortunately a letdown with the food and staff/service, probably a bit of an unfortunate choice in meal and poor waiter for my table. The service was excellent, especially since we were a party of six and descended on the place unannounced. I gave my Margarita pizza a four out of ten and think that that was generous. My complaints - the crust was quite wimpy, undercooked, and the entire pizza was overpowered by the basal pesto! I have never had basil pesto, or any other pesto, on a pizza! I will give the Recovery Room another chance and will try the Margarita pizza again. But, I will ask for fresh basil and be specific that the pesto is not to contaminate the pizza. My long experience with pizza making is that they must be cooked on a stone and the oven must be 500F or higher to get the crust the way I like it. The service is always great, so kind and quick, no complaints ever. Even with summer hires they are great! The setting is beautiful, nice outside patio, great raw bar seating, and even in the winter the indoors is comfortable and warm. A few months ago our meal was off and seemed poorly made with lesser quality ingredients, but we let it go as we thought maybe it was just a bad night. We came back again this weekend and it was more of not worse of the same. Our staple go to here has always been the crab cakes with Kimchi. I love it so much that I sometimes order 2 of it as my meal, with extra kimchi on the side! We have also tried many other options though, both kinds of lobster rolls, scallops, ravioli, always 2-3 things from the raw bar, and generally get an entree and drink special too. I'm not sure if staffing/decision making in the kitchen changed or they are cutting costs but something is definitely off. The crab cakes are no longer what they were, they have no signs of the large lump crab, and honestly tasted like a frozen version made with imitation crab. Add to that that they raised the price and I am baffled they thought it was ok to serve. The kimchi is no longer actual kimchi but plain raw cabbage chopped and lightly dusted with what could only be the leftover spices from a poor attempt at kimchi mix. The entire thing was so bad we had to send it back. When I asked about what had changed I was met with a firm denial that it was any different than it had ever been. We have eaten them around 15-20 different times and I honestly couldn't believe they were trying to convince me it was the same. The lobster roll was awful, tasted almost day old. If we had done what we wanted we would have sent our entire meals back and just left. On top of all of this, the prices have been consistently raised and yet the food quality has gone way down. I think if it were not for tourists and the location this place would suffer greatly from the changes and cutbacks they have made. Sadly, we will not be returning.
