The restaurant caught our attention with people eating inside and we checked out some photos. The seating area was crowded. The display of wine bottles at the bar area was interesting. We sat near the pizza oven which was pretty cool to see. Lots of people were ordering their pizzas, especially for takeout. Service was decent. I had the veggie lover pizza and it already took out the cheese which I loved!! They definitely packed it with lots of topping!!! Loved it! First of all, the restaurant is gorgeous and very clean. Every staff member we encounter were pleasant and helpful. The patio is absolutely precious, with comfortable seating. I have a food restriction and was accommodated very nicely. But the food, while being presented beautifully, was salty. I mean it was so salty, to the point where one of my companions used a spoon to scrape the salt from her steak. The other wasn't able to eat his veggies. Thankfully his salmon was perfect. I cut away half the Wagu burger to get to a point of eating it. The croutons in the garden salad were heavily salted. I would have sent my burger back but my companions would have been embarrassed. I was recently pleasantly surprised and impressed by Pizzeria Defina in the Roncesvalles neighbourhood. I was there for an engagement party in an area I was unfamiliar with but the food, service, and venue were all outstanding! We had the party room on the second floor. It was nicely set up, with casual seating, intimate lighting, lots of space to mingle, a nice bar and patio out back, washrooms (with a shower in one), and lots of art hanging on the walls. Very nicely done! It was a casual setup for food, starting with a Cheese Platter, Oysters on the Half Shell, Olives, and Flatbreads. The veggie courses were next with a delicious Romaine Garden Salad, Crispy Brussels Sprouts, Crispy Green Beans with a delicious Truffle Aioli, and Wild Boar Meatballs. Pizza was the last course and they were certainly worth the wait. We got a variety, all cooked in a wood-fired oven and all delicious! I was kinda full by this time but I managed to sample a couple of different ones and they were outstanding. This was the best pizza I've had in a very long time! Besides the great venue and delicious food, the service was excellent, especially with only three staff to handle greeting, serving, clearing, tending the bar, and operating the dishwasher on the fly. Absolutely loved this place. My wife and I ate family style sharing the calamari to start. It was a bit more chewy than it should have been but good nevertheless. We both liked the food quite a bit. Portion size was good. We ordered the two dishes and yet had to get the pizza packed. I also ordered vegan love as take out. It was delicious! I love Defina, it's been a longtime favourite that my family and I frequented regularly when I lived in the neighbourhood. The last TWO weekends, my husband and I took our kids for pizza since we had errands nearby. The first weekend, a kind and apologetic man opened the door (we began waiting at noon for the door to open, he came to the door shortly after when he saw us) and explained that the server was late for work but we could come in and sit down. 20 minutes later the server still hadn't arrived, so the man who answered the door offered to start our pizzas - I guess he was the cook? It was an inconvenience as one of our kids is 2 and he was hungry, but we figured it was likely just an off day. The server bustled in looking dishevelled (hungover?), but the food was great, and we left happy. Today, we had to go back to Roncy to pick up something I had dropped off the weekend before for repairs. We planned our trip around going back to Defina because the kids loved it and wanted more, and we showed up again near opening, which is 12pm. We got there at almost 12:10pm, and we walked in. The place was empty. We waited for a few minutes, wondering if we should sit down. Then the same server comes out from the back and tells us it will be another 25 minutes or more before they could cook, the fire in the oven wasn't even on yet and it wouldn't be hot for a while. As once again we were there with hungry kids, we left, annoyed, and went to Barque down the street instead. For a popular restaurant that is supposed to be open for business at noon, having the only server arrive almost a half hour late on a busy Saturday - and the very next Saturday not having the fire or kitchen ready to cook orders until almost an hour after opening is ridiculous and sloppy. Bottom line is that the food is great, but clearly the service and organization has gone downhill and leaves a lot to be desired. Too bad. read more

They are located in the heart of Roncesvalles Village and are serving up quality pizzas which have the most delicate and thin crust and premium ingredients. I got the family meal which comes with 2 pizzas. One Margherita and one Diavola pizza and a side of crispy beans. They were super nice and threw in the side of their Brussel sprouts which was aaaammmaaazing by the way. I usually do not eat vegetables and more of a meat and potato person but this was the one time I literally ate the whole box of Brussel sprouts. This was the best wood fire pizza I think I've ever had. We made the trek down here because my wife and I are trying all the spots on BlogTOs best pizza in Toronto list from lowest to highest. This spot was number 8 and I don't know how. It was effing delightful. Ample street parking. It's a small place but it was not busy when we came so we got a spot right away. The ambiance was nice. Super casual. We were both definitely in sweats. Dimmer lighting (not Instagram friendly if you're into that sort of thing...we're wearing sweats in a restaurant so clearly we aren't) and the kitchen is separated by a glass divider at the back so you can see the wood fire oven in all its glory. We ordered three pizzas: the Red Hot Chilli Pepper, the Capo Faro 24, and the Wild Mushroom. The Red Hot Chilli Pepper was my favourite one. It had chorizo and peppers on it as well as chilli flakes amongst other things. More chilli flakes and chilli oil, which I recommend, was provided unprompted as well. Very good. My wife got the Wild Mushroom, a vegetarian option, which was also delicious. The char on this one was nice but it still maintained floppiness of the slice. The Capo Faro we tried because the menu said that it won some award in 2016. If you're not adventurous, I would recommend you go with one of the more traditional meats. This one has mackerel and octopus on it, so it is fishy tasting. It was really good still if you like seafood, but be warned if you just dabble in it. The staff were super pleasant and friendly as well. They were there whenever we needed anything without hovering or being overbearing. Food came out so quickly too. We paid for an hour parking and were back in our car with our leftovers with 13 minutes left on the meter. Everything together gives me an easy 5 star review. I'll be back the try the Pumba for sure. I was in town visiting and really wanted to try a good pizza place. Pizzeria Defina more than exceeded my expectations. They have a great ambiance. We were there for dinner so the lighting was low, there were candles on the tables, music playing in the background and a great view of their brick pizza oven. For our meal we started with the Cesar salad. The salad was delicious and had great fresh ingredients. We ordered one of the Las Vegas competition pizzas. Again, delicious with fresh ingredients. The crust was perfect; light and airy with a nice crunch. We finished our dinner off with a chocolate torte which came with vanilla gelato and strawberry purée. The dessert was great. We also had beer and wine with dinner. They had a great selection to choose from. The service was great here. Our server was attentive and made great suggestions to us while ordering. We were in the area and finding food was relatively easy on Roncesvalles. We came across Pizzeria Defina and decided to grab their popular wood-fired pies. The lady at the cash was kind and explained the sizes of their pizzas. Ultimately, we ordered a 12" Margherita Pizza, the total came out to $18.65. The presentation of the box was well done, it showcased a man tossing a pizza in the air while flexing his right arm. Let's get into the pizza, it featured plum tomato sauce, fior di latte, grana padano, & basil. Yes, the smell of the wood-fired pizza and the pungent smell of basil was apparent. We sat down, opened the box and there she was. A decent amount of plum tomato sauce followed by a nice layer of fior di latte (semi-soft mozzarella) and basil scattered across the surface. I did notice the crust of the pizza was black, I prodded at the dark spot and it immediately crumbled away. I didn't mind since it was at the edge of the pie. I decided to take a bite of the thin crusted pizza, I can really tell the plum tomato sauce was hitting me in every way possible - sweet, tangy and tarty. I couldn't pick up the flavour on the grana padano, but the fior di latte gave a light and delicate touch. The basil unfolded a minty and slightly bitter aftertaste which completed this Margherita pizza. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves now. I did notice a burnt taste lingering in my mouth with all of the wonderful ingredients. I lifted up the pizza and problem presented itself, dark burnt spots were everywhere. Hands down the BEST pizza we've EVER had!! Even my gluten-sensitive husband had TWO pieces! We were looking for a pizza place near our rental, and this was our choice. Parking was tricky, but we found a spot not too far away. Seating was limited, but there were plenty of spots left. We were seated directly in front of the gentlemen making the pizzas...that was FUN to watch...they have a talent, for sure! Drink menu had quite a selection, as did the menu. I still remember the first time I visited Pizzeria Defina a few years ago. The restaurant has a few tables at the front of the house, which are nice during the warm months, to enjoy a nice meal while observing the lively foot traffic on Roncesvalles. The pizzas were on the pricey side, but the quality of ingredients and taste was unparalleled. I was thoroughly impressed back then. Last weekend I was craving something different, and decided to return to Defina. During the cold months, the back of the house has a larger seating area with cozy tables facing the wood fired pizza oven. I started the meal with Wild Boar Meatballs (fire roasted tomatoes, grana padano, basil, wood fired foccacia); three golf-sized meatballs were served over a bed of tomato sauce, drizzled with grana padano and two slices of foccacia. I was craving meatballs that day and this small plate hit the spot; the only downside is that the basil was either too little or absent. For my main I had the 2013 Pizza Expo Best Traditional Pizza, International Region (nduja sausage, SM tomato sauce, bufala, hen of the woods mushroom, tarragon, basil). It is a good tasting pizza; the spiciness of the nduja sausage was nice; the crust is thin, as I like it; the toppings seemed a bit thin, compared to when I used to order this pizza in the past. A Roncesvalles treasure has been discovered!! I found Pizzeria Defina because I was going to have lunch with a friend that needed something gluten-free, and also we wanted to go somewhere special. This pizzeria seemed to be the perfect choice: has tons of gluten-free options, reviews were awesome, interior seemed really pretty... so there we went. We were lucky because we arrived early and it was not too crowded at that time, but heads up, it gets busy busy around 1-2pm - would have been difficult to get a table. I ordered a creamy pizza with yukon gold mashed potatoes and mushrooms. Whaaaaaaat, a pizza with potato? Yes, it works!!! And it is delicious!!! I thought it was going to be way too heavy, but on top of the Napolitan style crust the mix was spot on. Also, the brussels sprouts we ordered as appetizer were crunchy, lemony, and perfect. I live around the corner from this restaurant and it is always packed every night so decided to give it a try for my birthday tonight and it totally rose to the occasion! So very happy with my experience. The staff were so attentive and down to earth. Very accommodating and genuinely concerned with our comfort and enjoyment of the food. I shared that it was my birthday and they surprised me with a massive cream brûlée for dessert, which I totally did not anticipate. It was a very delicious crème brûlée as well with a hint of lemon and some berries below the torched surface. Probably the best crème brûlée I've ever had. This place was recommended to me earlier in the day by a colleague who hadn't been there yet so I said, hey why not find out what it's all about! It's a pretty nice looking place and was quite busy when we walked in. The staff that got us a seat was very attentive and made sure we got a spot quickly. After ordering the motzarella bar, we were told that it was '86ed - the ONLY reason I knew what that meant was because of too much kitchen nightmare episodes. We then switched to the Patagonia ($26) The dish had a really nice skirt steak topped with a very salty and fishy crab topping. It ended up being a fishy meat and was a little confusing. Another confusing part of the plate was the arugula with blueberries and pickled eggplant. I like all three things, but together, they confused me! The cassava mash with the Stearns was quite nice and so was the fried provolone. For the pizza, we got the diavola ($14). This was really good. Thin and light. Just the way I like it. This is a hidden gem in the Roncy that I was lucky enough to try because my friends who lived in the neighbourhood discovered it. It's always a treat to come here. Great decor and ambience; perfect spot for a date night. On to the food...even though this is a pizzeria, I can't recommend the vegetable dishes enough. Every dish we've tried has been outstanding. My favourites are the brussel sprouts and the green beans. The vegetables are cooked perfectly, taste crispy, and are complemented well by other ingredients e.g. grana padano for the brussel sprouts and truffle oil for the green beans. Seems like the menu might be seasonal, as last time we came they had beets as one of their vegetable dises (which I'd highly recommend if it reappears). My favourite pizza is the 2013 Pizza Expo Best Traditional Pizza with nduja sausage, mushrooms, etc. We also tried the rapini pizza last time, which was good, although I much prefer tomato-sauce based pizzas. LOVED this place so much!!! We ordered their #504 Pizza and their Patagonia Charcuterie Board. The #504 had thinly sliced soppresetta, black olives, mushrooms and other goodness and the board had medium skirt steak topped with chimichurri crab salad, mashed cassava and chips, deep fried cheese, asparagus, focaccia and pickled zucchini. I want to give it 4 and 1/2 stars. Only problem...not enough room on the table for our food and we felt a little rushed and left without eating all of our food and had them pack a doggie bag. I have held several events at Italian restaurants in the past, and they all fell short. Yes, most of my guests seemed to love the pizza, but I am just too particular I guess. Though I do love Pizzeria Libretto - but they can't be the only restaurant (chain) in Toronto that serves delicious pizza? The kind of pizza that when you take a bite, you can savor each individual ingredient.... How is it that I like to put it? Mmm... oh, "when the ingredients sing in perfect harmony.." Ick! So cheesy! No pun intended. HAHA I know, I am a riot! Anywho, so after a great deal of research, and a lot of back-and-forth, I contacted Pizzeria Defina, and OMG, Roksolana (owner) patiently put up with my million questions (poor soul), and agreed (shocking!) to give us a family style experience. Oh yeah, we are dining like one would in Nona's house in Italia--pass those plates around and mangia! The days before this dinner were stressful! The fact was that I had no idea what we were going to be eating. Roksalana had said that my group would get to sample a few appetizers, and each person would get a couple of slices of pizza, and a dessert. This sounded fine to me when she and I initially discussed the menu, however, the week before this dinner I had gone out for brunch with friends, and the restaurant and I had agreed upon a similar deal (family style--but in this case brunch, not dinner), and that experience did not go well at all! So I guess you could say that I was panicking and maybe even traumatized. "What if this dinner is a complete bust like the last one? I will feel incredibly guilty for dragging 10 friends to another disastrous meal." But I took a deep breath, and decided to take the plunge and trust Roksalana. We arrived for our dinner at 7pm, and our table was ready for us. Shortly after our arrival, our waiter came over to our table and asked if I was there ("is Itanni here?"). So I introduced myself, and asked if we could wait a couple more minutes before the first course came out. At 10 after 7pm we received our first course, and let me tell you, I blew out a huge sigh of relief. Unlike my last family style experience, the portions we received at Pizzeria Defina were plentiful, and the staff was relaxed and knowledgeable. I also did not have to worry about timing, or having my guests leave hungry. I normally review each individual dish, but in this case, I don't see the point. The review for each dish would read the same: "wow, delicious, amazing, fresh.." We were all blown away by the food. This was a meal of my dreams that I did not think anyone would be able to make a reality, and somehow Roksolana and her team did. We dined on dishes that were made with fresh ingredients, perfect ingredient combinations, on-the-money seasoning, vegetables grilled to perfection, perfect pizzas.... I died and went to food heaven. I ended up here last night with a friend after trying to go to Barque and find a two hour wait for a table. Walking in here we were seated almost immediately near the back. The service was excellent. Though we had a regular server, there was always someone coming by to see if we needed anything or to check in. The bartender was especially friendly. It's hard not to compare this place to Libretto. It's very similar. What I like better about these guys though is that there are more options. For around $15-18 a pie there's a wide variety of vegetarian, salami,and other cured meats. While we debated with going the traditional route, Lisa and I went with the Divina and the Roncy (Napoletana style crust). Both were excellent. I can't say I've ever had potato on a pizza before, delicious. It was a loud crowd on this Saturday night. The place was full of small groups and couples in their late 20's and early thirties. We came here last night for dinner. There was a bit of a line so we had to wait for 30 minutes or so but no big deal. The hostess was really friendly and offered us drinks while we were waiting. My companion had one of their polish beers which was delightful (and I'm not a huge beer fan). I tried two of their cocktails and they were ok. We had the grilled peach salad to share and it was very nice! For our mains, I got the Wild Mushroom pizza and my companion got the Roncy pizza. The Wild Mushroom pizza was amazing! One of the best pizzas I've had in the city. My companion really enjoyed his pizza but he thought the pancetta was quite salty and wishes the pizza had more potatoes. Incredible food, fantastic service and very good prices. Full disclosure: a good friend of mine is the manager here. I'll try to be as objective as I can, but honestly, if I didn't love the place, I just wouldn't write a review. Luckily for my tummy and our friendship, I was completely blown away. Chad and I came for dinner on a Good Friday evening. At 6:30pm, it was PACKED. It seems that this is the go-to place for young west end families to dine. Thankfully, the kids were all well behaved. We sat at the bar since we didn't really feel like waiting for a table. Firstly, the service is great, and not just because I know a couple people that work there. The staff genuinely like each other and are happy to be there. The bartender was friendly and knowledgable and service was quick. The people I know there are from my past life as a server at Il Fornello and were always very professional and great at their jobs. To start, we shared the calimari appetizer, a steal at $8. It was INCREDIBLE. It was perfectly cooked (grilled over a fire, I think) and served with roasted tomatoes and impossibly tiny olives that gave it a great salty bite. I loved this. I could have eaten a whole meal of this. We also had house-baked bread on the table with scotch bonnet chili sauce, which meant I got dinner and a show as Chad choked on the super hot chilis. Chad and I both had the Napoletana pizza ($13), which featured anchovies, olives and oregano. He had it on the crispier roma crust, and I had it on the chewier napoletana crust. It was tasty, but I should have ordered a pizza with more toppings, as this was not the kind of pizza you get when you can't have cheese. It's a simple pizza where you get to really let the crust, sauce and cheese sing. Totally my fault, this isn't the first cheeseless pizza I ordered. My friend actually recommended that I get a different one, but I really really wanted olives and anchovies. The olives and anchovies were perfectly balanced throughout. I particularly loved the tomato sauce, which they were very generous for mine. It was fresh, flavourful, simple and made from scratch. It actually tasted a lot like the sauce I make at home, and I make a damn good sauce. I was super happy with my dining experience, and loved that it didn't break the bank, even though we split a bottle of wine ($29) and had cocktails. I'm definitely coming back and will try their pastas next, just to get some more of that sweet, sweet tomato sauce. Roasted Root Vegetables sounds gross (celeriac purée isn't a very exciting idea, either) but seriously, this was delicious. The margherita pizza was also delicious-- it's chewy, but not too soggy to pick up. I am happiest when I don't have a puddle in the middle of my pizza (ahem, Libretto, Famoso), so this one hit the spot. Ordered the special pizza which was supposed to have short rib on it-there was none-they maybe forgot to put it on with the other toppings or are just REALLY skimpy with the protein. I made a reservation almost 2 weeks in advance for Valentine'S Day and they called me a couple hours before my time to tell me I had to go to the Roncesvalles location instead of the DuPont location which is where I made the reservation. I had the Resy app to confirm that I reserved the DuPont location but the strongly implied it wasn't their fault and couldn't honour my reservation. It was an inconvenience and there was no apology or acknowledgment and although I didn't want to go to the Roncey location - I was left on a busy night with no other possibility of a table somewhere else. The server clearly didn't want to be there-didn't crack a smile or even attempt a personality. Puzza was average with skimpy toppings. Spicy Margarita was also underwhelmimy. The calamari and gardeniera salad was just one rubbery grilled tube with a few vinegar soaked red peppers. Wandering around hungry on Roncesvalles, a friend and I decided to try this spot. Something about maple and bacon on a sandwich board was very alluring. The place had a nice atmosphere and smelled delicious. It was kind of empty but it was a cold Tuesday. We sat down. Service was very friendly. The 2 staff we met were both passionate about the food there. It's really nice to see people get excited about the menu items. We went with the special pizza of the day which had 2 different types of bacon, basil, cherry tomatoes... I think. There was more, too. Anyhow... Absolutely delicious. It came on a nice, soft dough (which was recommended over the hard dough). This pizza was amazing. The pizza fed 2 people nicely for $18 before tax and tip. The pizza here is better than most, if not all, pizza I've tried in Toronto. I really enjoyed the scotch bonnet oil; I thought that was a nice touch! I would recommend this place for pizza for sure. It's affordable, has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff that are passionate about their food. Most importantly, it is delicious! This pizzeria is warm and inviting the moment you walk in. We were greeted immediately and asked where we would like to be seated. We opted for the back and my boyfriend and I were seated in front of the area where the pizza is prepared. I watched in awe how the pizza was made in from scratch and cooked to perfection in a matter of minutes in the wood burning oven. I ordered the "The 504" which had tomato sauce, basil, fior de latte, soppresata, red onions and mushrooms and grand padano. On the first bite it was so flavourfull and you can taste all the ingredients. The thin crust was just perfect (you have the option to select different flours for your pizza). It was delicious. What sets this place apart from all the other established pizzerias is how fresh the ingredients are and how fast a simple yey delicious pizza is made and brought to your table. Awesome service and unbeatable food. Note: they do not take reservations. But in this day and age that's a great thing, because then the restaurant isn't holding open tables for people that might come/show up late. I came here on a Tuesday night (2 of us) around 7:30 and got a table right away. Had we been a group of 4, we likely would have had to wait maybe 15 minutes? The place was about 95% full. They have a $5 special on beers on Tuesday, so that was nice for our server to tell us. We ended up getting the brussel sprouts to start, which were great. They're mixed in with some peppers and cheese which help kill the natural awful taste of sprouts. For dinner I got the wild mushroom pizza and it was out of this world. The pizza is perfectly thin so that you don't feel gross for eating the entire thing and the dough is great enough that you will want to eat the crust. Overall, for 2 pizzas, an app, and 2 drinks, total was around $75, including tip - I can't complain. I'll definitely be back to conquer everything else on the menu. read more
