Stopped in for lunch after touring the Colosseum. Based on the ratings, we walked past the closer restaurants and opted for indoor seating to enjoy the AC. We ordered a Four Cheese Pizza to share and added a side of Bolognaise to dip it in. Personally I think it should be a standard menu item for us crazy Americans who need our meat sauces. Our children joined us on one occasion and one time we had to eat inside because the cold weather in late March was brutal! We often ate chicken dishes although beef is more popular in Italy generally so the chicken dishes (especially white meat) are not as plentiful. If you pay in cash, they will give your party free limoncello shots! That was a highlight of our meal. I got the risotto and it was pretty tasty, but it doesn't stick out in my mind as one of the greatest meals of my time in Rome. Great food for the price. Service was quick and our waiter was super friendly. The place was busy when we were there. Shortly after we were seated inside, the rain poured down. And I mean, really poured down. There were folks seated outside and the staff scrambled to find them tables inside. They were nice lending folks umbrellas while they waited for their tables. First time visiting Italy and after a day at the Colosseum we were starving. Ristorante Volare was a restaurant I had already looked up on Yelp and we happened to stumble across it as we walked a little ways out of the Colosseum. Old school male waiters were fast and efficient with the food. My daughter had the pepperoni pizza or pizza Diablo, I had the octopus salad and the grilled prawns, we got a side of grilled veggies and my husband had the fettuccine bolognese. Everything was delicious...the seafood fresh and the pizza was thin and the pepperoni or salame was tasty. One of the best meals we had in Rome! Just know that the waiters don't fawn over you or even ask if your meal is good you just have to let them know what you need and they are quick to respond. They don't even bring you the check until you ask for it. We were ok with that bc as they say, "when in Rome." read more

Restaurants in Rome are such a risky roulette of possibility versus reality. Sometimes, the frequent unmet aspirations induces lower expectations which leads to new discoveries ... like the inexpensive, yet fabulous Ristorante Volare. I didn't expect 5-star service or 5-star food, but we enjoyed a 5-star experience on the sidewalk patio of Ristorante Volare sipping Chardonnays (5€) with a view of the Colosseum a couple blocks away. Spaghetti alla Carbonara (8€) Bacon, Eggs, and Cheese woven into perfectly-prepared chewy noodles was rich and decadent. It was more like a dreamy golden breakfast pasta than your grandma's Italian spaghetti and meatballs. Spigola alla Griglia (16€) Fresh and fantastic grilled whole Sea Bass with a simple green side salad may not have been twice as good as the pasta (despite the double cost); however, it was actually worth the money and a refreshing alternative to the boldness of the other dishes. Spinaci (6€) Garlic and Peppers made this plate of sauteed fresh Spinach spicy and brilliant. I simply couldn't get enough of the green goodness while the flavors danced well with the wine and other two items. Double Espressos (4€) A final shot of adrenaline came with these classic Italian after meal caffeine hits. The dark affluent taste had us hyped and ready for exploring more of Rome. Ristorante Volare was better than expected because service was on-point and consistent while the Italian food was bursting with unique and complimentary flavors. The penne arrabbiata was top notch and all of their noodles and sauce here tasted the best, very fresh and for a great price too! If you're in Rome, definitely give this place a shot. The only downside is the bees flying around while you're trying to eat. I wanted to go somewhere near the hotel on our last day and after exhausting our recommended list of eateries. We stumbled upon Volare while taking a stroll. My husband and I realized that we had not eaten pizza during our trip, so Volare was one of few places where the pizza came with sausage as a topping for my husband. The pizza was tasty and satisfying. However, I would recommend ordering pasta dishes in Rome. If you're a huge fan of pizza, go to Naples (it's what they're known for!) and stop complaining about pizza in other parts of Italy. The wine was good and reasonably priced. I 100% recommend coming to this restaurant!! Great outdoor seating with a view of the colosseum! The wait staff is very friendly. AC inside and free wifi! The food is also phenomenal!! They have a lemon cello spritz which I have not seen before and is a must try!! They even make the lemon cello themselves! I had the black truffle beef which had a little more fat than I'd like though great flavor! The pastas are amazing!! Fresh homemade pasta(not the spaghetti) with great sauces! Service and attentiveness to customers could be a bit better. It was a bit hot as they sat us at the table near the door for entry. If we wanted to sit outside on the patio, we would've but we had just taken a three hour tour of the Colosseum and surrounding area. The pasta was excellent! We decided to dine here based on the great reviews and it definitely didn't disappoint. It's a casual little restaurant on Via di S. Giovanni in Laterano street and within walking distance from the Colosseo. The service was great! Although there was a language barrier, our waitress was very warm, friendly, and attentive. I got the fettuccine with prawn and eggplant and OMG I LOVEEED it! It was everything I was hoping for it to be and more--shrimp was tasty, pasta was cooked to the perfect consistency, and the sauce was creamy yet not heavy. My niece got the ravioli with ricotta and spinach inside and spaghetti sauce on top which she had zero complaints about (for once). This was our last meal in Rome before heading back to the States, and it was a winner. Every dish, from the appetizers to the main dishes, was excellent. Because the restaurant has Sardinian dishes, I had the bottarga di muggine (salted roe of mullet) and Sardinian sausage along with the usual prosciutto and melon and the mixed bruschetta (which included cream of artichoke and olive along with the standard tomato), which was served with Sardinian bread drizzled with olive oil, which is like a crispy flat bread. Everyone enjoyed their mains, including the Sardinian ravioli which included orange zest and saffron, and a young pig (see pictures) which was very tasty and tender. The server recommended an excellent Sardinian red wine, a B'ingias Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2013 which was delicious with our pasta dishes. Service was excellent as well, and the server spoke excellent English. If you are in the vicinity of the Colliseum you need to stop here for a memorable meal, and then walk a few steps afterwards to Gelateria da Costanza. The only downside was lack of air con in the dining room but the food is just too good to dock them for this. read more

Worst service I've ever experienced. Went with my dad and my mum, who was sick unfortunately. So we only wanted a bread basket for her. We got told that we will have to order three full dishes. Very close to the colosseum and very nice waiters! We passed by this place earlier in the day as they were preparing to open. They told us to come back at 12, while we were a little disappointed we decided to come back. They had outdoor seating and we preferred that with their shading and cool breeze. They always had someone at the door to help with any needs that we might've had. The waiters all spoke English very well and they were very funny. Customer services was not lacking here. I order a peach tea and my boyfriend had still water. We spent the entire day at the Forum and Colosseum that we were pretty dehydrated and hungry. We needed a place close to the Piazza del Colosseo to have a nice lunch, get out of the rain and access a bathroom. This restaurant did All those things very well. Pasta is about $10 per person. I got a lasagna that tasted great. I think it was just cheese, pasta and sauce but it hit the spot. Wife got spaghetti with bacon. It was a little salty, but it had bacon after all. The taste was very good and I also liked the pasta a dente. The only problem was that the wait staff was very busy.
